The understanding and quantification of ductility in crystalline metals, which has led to their widespread and effective usage as a structural material, is lacking in metallic glasses (MGs). Here, we introduce such a framework for ductility. This very practical framework is based on a MGs ability to support stable shear band growth, quantified in a stress gradient, gradSDB, which we measure and calculate for a range of MGs. Whether a MG behaves ductile or brittle in an application is determined by the comparison between gradsDB the applied stress field gradient, gradsapp. If gradsDB > gradsapp, the MG will behave brittle, if gradsDB < gradsapp, the MG will behave ductile, and gradsapp - gradsDB indicates how ductile. This framework can explain observed plastic properties of MGs and their apparent contradicting brittle and ductile characteristics. Looking forward, proposed framework provides the constitutive relation to quantitatively model their plastic behavior in any application, a requirement to use MGs as structural materials.

Dispersion relations of the crystal-field excitations in cubic antiferromagnets CeTe, CeSe, and CeS have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering using single crystalline samples. The Fourier transform of the magnetic exchange interaction $J(q)$ obtained from the crystal-field dispersion is largely different from that of the mean-field interaction obtained from the Néel temperature and the Weiss temperature. From detailed reexamination of the magnetic susceptibility and these $J(q)$ relations, we conclude that the magnetic exchange interaction is dependent on the crystal-field levels. The interaction associated with the $Γ_8$ excited state is stronger than that with the $Γ_7$ ground state.

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on CeBi which undergoes a two-step antiferromagnetic (AF) transition with temperature. Soft-x-ray ARPES has revealed the inverted band structure at the X point of bulk Brillouin zone for CeBi (and also for LaBi) as opposed to LaSb with non-inverted band structure. Low-energy ARPES on CeBi has revealed the Dirac-cone band at the Gamma point in the paramagnetic phase associated with the bulk band inversion. On the other hand, a double Dirac-cone band appears on entering the first AF phase at T = 25 K, whereas a single Dirac-cone band recovers below the second AF transition at T = 14 K. The present result suggests an intricate interplay between antiferromagnetism and topological surface states in CeBi.

We describe a mobile manipulation hardware and software system capable of autonomously performing complex human-level tasks in real homes, after being taught the task with a single demonstration from a person in virtual reality. This is enabled by a highly capable mobile manipulation robot, whole-body task space hybrid position/force control, teaching of parameterized primitives linked to a robust learned dense visual embeddings representation of the scene, and a task graph of the taught behaviors. We demonstrate the robustness of the approach by presenting results for performing a variety of tasks, under different environmental conditions, in multiple real homes. Our approach achieves 85% overall success rate on three tasks that consist of an average of 45 behaviors each.

In order to understand the chemical properties and environmental impacts of low-solubility Cs-rich microparticles (CsMPs) derived from the FDNPP, the CsMPs collected from Tokyo were investigated at the atomic scale using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and dissolution experiments were performed on the air filters. Remarkably, CsMPs 0.58-2.0 micrometer in size constituted 80%-89% of the total Cs radioactivity during the initial fallout events on 15th March, 2011. The CsMPs from Tokyo and Fukushima exhibit the same texture at the nanoscale: aggregates of Zn-Fe-oxide nanoparticles embedded in amorphous SiO2 glass. The Cs is associated with Zn-Fe-oxide nanoparticles or in the form of nanoscale inclusions of intrinsic Cs species, rather than dissolved in the SiO2 matrix. The Cs concentration in CsMPs from Tokyo (0.55-10.9 wt%) is generally less than that in particles from Fukushima (8.5-12.9 wt%).The radioactivity per unit mass of CsMPs from Tokyo is still as high as 1E11 Bq/g, which is extremely high for particles originating from nuclear accidents. Thus, inhalation of the low-solubility CsMPs would result in a high localized energy deposition by beta (0.51-12)*1E-3 Gy/h within the 100-micrometer-thick water layer on the CsMP surface) and may have longer-term effects compared with those predicted for soluble Cs-species.

Successive magnetic phase transitions at $T_1$=17.5 K and $T_2$=18.5 K in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$, with a distorted kagome lattice of Gd ions, is studied using resonant X-ray diffraction with polarization analysis. It has been suggested that in this compound the $S=7/2$ spins on the nearest-neighbor Gd-triangle form a ferromagnetic trimer and the Gd lattice can be effectively considered as an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice of $S=21/2$ spin trimers [S. Nakamura et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 054410 (2018)]. We show that the magnetic order in this system is described by an incommensurate wave vector $q$~(0.27, 0, 0), which varies slightly with temperature. In the low temperature phase below $T_1$, the experimental results are well explained by considering that the spin trimers form a helical order with both the $c$-axis and $c$-plane components. In the intermediate phase above $T_1$, the $c$-axis component vanishes, resulting in a sinusoical structure within the $c$-plane. The sinusoidal-helical transition at $T_1$ can be regarded as an ordering of chiral degree of freedom, which is degenerate in the intermediate phase.

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of LaSb and CeSb, a candidate of topological insulator. Using soft-x-ray photons, we have accurately determined the three-dimensional bulk band structure and revealed that the band inversion at the Brillouin-zone corner - a prerequisite for realizing topological-insulator phase - is absent in both LaSb and CeSb. Moreover, unlike the ARPES data obtained with soft-x-ray photons, those with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons were found to suffer significant $k_z$ broadening. These results suggest that LaSb and CeSb are topologically trivial semimetals, and unusual Dirac-cone-like states observed with VUV photons are not of the topological origin.

We have measured the specific heat of single-crystal (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ in magnetic fields up to 19.5 T. The contribution $C_{\perp}$ arising from the magnetic subsystem in an applied magnetic field perpendicular to the chains is determined. Compared to pure Yb$_4$As$_3$, for which $C_{\perp}$ indicates a gap opening, for diluted systems a non-exponential decay is found at low temperatures which is consistent with the thermodynamic scaling of the specific heat established for a Bose-glass phase.

We have measured the electrical resistivity of cerium monochalcogenices, CeS, CeSe, and CeTe, under high pressures up to 8 GPa. Pressure dependences of the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_{N}$, crystal field splitting, and the $\ln T$ anomaly of the Kondo effect have been studied to cover the whole region from the magnetic ordering regime at low pressure to the Fermi liquid regime at high pressure. $T_{N}$ initially increases with increasing pressure, and starts to decrease at high pressure as expected from the Doniach's diagram. Simultaneously, the $\ln T$ behavior in the resistivity is enhanced, indicating the enhancement of the Kondo effect by pressure. It is also characteristic in CeX$_{c}$ that the crystal field splitting rapidly decreases at a common rate of $-12.2$ K/GPa. This leads to the increase in the degeneracy of the $f$ state and further enhancement of the Kondo effect. It is shown that the pressure dependent degeneracy of the $f$ state is a key factor to understand the pressure dependence of $T_{N}$, Kondo effect, magnetoresistance, and the peak structure in the temperature dependence of resistivity.

We report how orthorhombic domains are controlled by adjusting external magnetic fields. It is shown that orthorhombic domains in RAl$_3$C$_3$ can be aligned by the field when the R ion is magnetic. It is also shown that a single-domain state can be switched to another single-domain state by the field even in paramagnetic states with small induced moments. For R=Lu, however, it was not possible to change the multidomain state by a field of up to 70 kOe. We discuss that domain selection and switching are caused by magnetic anisotropies in the orthorhombic phase of RAl$_3$C$_3$. We also propose an idea to explain the field-induced antiferromagnetism revealed by Khalyavin et al. [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{87}, 220406 (2013)].

We report low-temperature specific heat, $C(T)$, measurements on (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ with $x=0.01$ and $x=0.03$, where nonmagnetic Lu atoms are randomly distributed on antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chains with $J/k_{\mathrm B}=28$ K. The observed reduction of $C$ below 15 K with increasing $x$ is accurately described by quantum transfer matrix simulations without any adjustable parameter, implying that the system is an excellent experimental realization of segmented quantum spin chains. Finite-size effects consistent with conformal-field theory predictions are leading to the formation of an effective low-energy gap. The size of the gap increases with Lu content and accounts for the impurity driven reduction of the specific heat. For both concentrations our results verify experimentally the low temperature scaling behavior established theoretically and also confirm the value of $J$ determined from pure Yb$_4$As$_3$.

Valence instability is a key ingredient of the unusual properties of f electron materials, yet a clear understanding is lacking as it involves a complex interplay between f electrons and conduc- tion states. Here we propose a unified picture of pressure-induced valence transition in Sm and Yb monochalcogenides, considered as model system for mixed valent 4f-electron materials. Using high-resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we show that the valence transition is driven by the promotion of a 4f electron specifically into the lowest unoccupied (LU) 5d t2g band. We demonstrate with a promotional model that the nature of the transition at low pressures is intimately related to the density of states of the LU band, while at high pressures it is governed by the hybridization strength. These results set a new standard for the generic understanding of valence fluctuations in f-electron materials.

We have investigated the electronic states of the uranium monochalcogenide US, which is a typical ferromagnetic uranium compound, using soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SX-PES). In early ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy studies, two peak structures of the U 5f states were observed and have been interpreted that one has an itinerant character around the Fermi level (EF) and the other located below EF has a character of localized U 5f electrons. In this study, the intrinsic bulk valence-band spectrum of US was first deduced by estimating the contribution of surface states to the valence-band spectrum using core-level photoemission spectra. We conclude that the electronic structure of US can be basically described by the itinerant nature of the U 5f electrons from comparison with theoretical valence-band spectra obtained by band-structure calculation in the local-density approximation.

Mixed-valence phenomena occurring in the "black" (B) and "gold" (G) phases of Sm1-x Yx S have been studied by x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and inelastic neutron scattering. Lattice-constant and phonon-dispersion results confirm that the valence instability occurs already inside the B phase. On the other hand, pronounced temperature anomalies in the thermal expansion α(T), as well as in the Sm mean-square displacements denote the onset of the B-G transition for the compositions x = 0.33 and 0.45. It is argued that these anomalies primarily denote an effect of electron-phonon coupling. The magnetic spectral response, measured on both powder and single crystals, is dominated by the Sm2+ spin-orbit component close to 36 meV. A strongly overdamped Sm3+ contribution appears only for x >= 0.33 near room-temperature. The quasielastic signal is strongly suppressed below 70 K, reflecting the formation of the singlet mixed-valence ground state. Quite remarkably, the signal around 36 meV is found, from the single-crystal spectra, to arise from two distinct, dispersive, interacting branches. The lower peak, confirmed to exist from x = 0.17 to x = 0.33 at least, is tentatively ascribed to an excitation specific to the mixed-valence regime, reminiscent of the "exciton" peak reported previously for SmB6 .

Abstract:
Inelastic neutron scattering experiment has been performed on a new heavy fermion compound YbAgGe for a polycrystalline sample at zero magnetic field. A quasielastic scattering and a crystal field excitation at 12 meV was observed. Both of them are broadened with an intrinsic width of 0.9 meV at 1.5 K which increases to about 3 meV at 300 K. The temperature dependence follows Gamma_0+AT^(1/2) ty…

The temperature dependence follows Gamma_0+AT^(1/2) typically observed in Kondo systems. Crystal field parameters were also deduced. To explain the result that only one excitation isobserved at 12 meV, it is concluded that the B22 term should be the main component.

Abstract:
The magnetic spectral response of black-phase mixed-valence Sm0.83Y0.17S has been measured by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal. Two magnetic peaks are observed in the energy range of the Sm2+ spin-orbit transition (25-40 meV). The magnetic spectral response of black-phase mixed-valence Sm0.83Y0.17S has been measured by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal. Two magnetic peaks are observed in the energy range of the Sm2+ spin-orbit transition (25-40 meV). Both of them exhibit significant dispersion along the three main symmetry directions, reminiscent of the spin-orbit exciton branch found in pure divalent SmS. The results can be reproduced by a simple phenomenological model accounting for the existence of sizeable Sm-Sm exchange interactions, and a microscopic mechanism is proposed on the basis of the "local-bound-state" theory developed previously for SmB6.
