We introduce a novel hybrid methodology combining classical finite element methods (FEM) with neural networks to create a well-performing and generalizable surrogate model for forward and inverse problems. The residual from finite element methods and custom loss functions from neural networks are merged to form the algorithm. The Finite Element Method-enhanced Neural Network hybrid model (FEM-NN hybrid) is data-efficient and physics conforming. The proposed methodology can be used for surrogate models in real-time simulation, uncertainty quantification, and optimization in the case of forward problems. It can be used for updating the models in the case of inverse problems. The method is demonstrated with examples, and the accuracy of the results and performance is compared against the conventional way of network training and the classical finite element method. An application of the forward-solving algorithm is demonstrated for the uncertainty quantification of wind effects on a high-rise buildings. The inverse algorithm is demonstrated in the speed-dependent bearing coefficient identification of fluid bearings. The hybrid methodology of this kind will serve as a paradigm shift in the simulation methods currently used.

MgB2 wires and tapes suffer from a limitation of the transport current densities, especially at low field, due to an unsufficient thermal stabilization caused by hot spots from a non-homogeneous microstructure, the presence of secondary phases and voids. For the preparation of MgB2 wires and tapes two different precursor routes, using MgB2 (ex-situ process) or Mg + B (in-situ process) are applied. The in-situ approach allows variation of many parameters in the wire preparation and the improvement of this approach is the central topic of this paper. We present an improved in-situ approach, the characterization of the filament microstructure, effects from stoichiometry and the corresponding superconducting properties. The transport current capability of such in-situ wires could be improved to the level of the reference ex-situ wires.

Abstract:
In this contribution, different concepts for mechanically reinforced MgB2 wires with high transport currents are presented and characterised. It is shown that the achieved critical transport currents depend strongly on the conductor concept, the choice of the precursor route and the applied treatment method.

In YBa2Cu3Ox, distinct features are found in the pressure dependence of the transition temperature, dTc/dp, and in DeltaCp*Tc, where DeltaCp is the jump in the specific heat at Tc: dTc/dp becomes zero when DeltaCp*Tc is maximal, whereas dTc/dp has a peak at lower oxygen contents where DeltaCp*Tc vanishes. Substituting Nd for Y and do** with Ca leads to a shift of these specific oxygen contents, since oxygen order and hole do** by Ca influences the hole content nh in the CuO2 planes. Calculating nh from the parabolic Tc(nh) behavior, the features coalesce for all samples at nh=0.11 and nh=0.175, irrespective of substitution and do**. Hence, this behavior seems to reflect an intrinsic property of the CuO2 planes. Analyzing our results we obtain different mechanisms in three do** regions: Tc changes in the optimally doped and overdoped region are mainly caused by charge transfer. In the slightly underdoped region an increasing contribution to dTc/dp is obtained when well ordered CuO chain fragments serve as pinning centers for stripes. This behavior is supported by our results on Zn doped NdBa2Cu3Ox and is responsible for the well known dTc/dp peak observed in YBa2Cu3Ox at x=6.7. Going to a hole content below nh=0.11 our results point to a crossover from an underdoped superconductor to a doped antiferromagnet, changing completely the physics of these materials.

In spite of the difference in the Tc(x) dependences, the jump in the specific heat DeltaC/Tc in both systems increases continuously being maximum at x = 7.0. Bond valence sum calculations based on neutron diffraction data point to a retarded generation of holes with increasing oxygen content in the Nd system and a different hole distribution between the chains and the planes in comparison to YBa2Cu3Ox accounting for the different behaviour of both systems.

The linear compressibilities and the thermal expansion of an untwinned, nearly optimal doped YBa2Cu3O6.94 single crystal were measured along the three crystallographic axes with a high-resolution dilatometer mounted in a high-pressure cell. The measurements were performed in a temperature range from 50 K to 320 K under hydrostatic gas pressure of maximal 0.65 GPa. At a temperature of 300 K the measured bulk modulus is reduced and shows a very strong enhancement under increasing pressure due to pressure-induced oxygen ordering. This ordering process can also be related to a glass transition seen in the thermal expansion above 225 K. At lower temperatures, when oxygen ordering is frozen, the bulk modulus is increased and shows a significantly reduced enhancement under pressure. This pressure dependence, however, is still anomalous high, probably caused by bonds of extremely different compressibilities within the unit cell. The widely spread literature data of the bulk modulus can be explained by this high pressure dependence.

According to the universal parabolic Tc(nh) behavior the differences in Tc(x)of Y123, YCa123 and Nd123 can be ascribed to different hole concentrations nh in the CuO2 planes caused by do** via changes in chemistry or structure. In order to study the influence of structural changes on Tc we examined the hydrostatic pressure effect dTc/dp (p up to 0.6 GPa). In the underdoped region, at nh=0.11, the examined compounds show a peak in dTc/dp which is very pronounced for systems with well ordered CuO chains. As this peak occurs at the same nh in all investigated systems it is not caused by oxygen ordering, but its origins might be found in a strong influence of lattice deformations on the electronic structure.

The results are used to test the extended charge transfer model that connects the pressure effect on Tc to an intrinsic dTc,max/dp and a pressure induced hole do** dnh/dp, the latter being caused by charge transfer from the CuO chains to the CuO2 planes. dnh/dp and dTc,max/dp are usually assumed to be constant with respect to pressure p. However, our experiments show that the usage of this model gives a poor description of the experimental Tc(p) values. We connected the extended charge transfer model to the pressure induced changes of the compressibilities. With this ansatz the calculated Tc(p) values show an excellent agreement with the experimentally determined values.

We performed susceptibility measurements on Y1-yCayBa2Cu3Ox single crystals under high He pressure. For each Ca content various samples with different oxygen contents have been prepared to probe the influence of Ca on Tc(x), dTc/dp(x) and Tc,max. Starting from the parabolic Tc(nh) behavior we calculated nh values from Tc and Tc,max for each sample. It is shown that in the overdoped region dTc/dp can be described by a pressure induced charge transfer with dnh/dp = 3.7E-3 [1/GPa] and a dTc,max/dp value of 0.8 K/GPa, irrespective of the Ca content. In the underdoped region additional pressure effects lead to a peak in dTc/dp at approximately 0.11 holes/CuO2 plane. However, with increasing Ca content this peak is strongly depressed. This is explained in terms of an increasing disorder in the CuO chain system due to do**. Deviations in dTc/dp at very low nh values can be assigned to the ortho II ordering in the CuO chain system.

We present results of reflectivity measurements with E parallel to c and E perpendicular to c on NdBa2Cu3Ox (Nd123) single crystals close to full oxygen do**. Along the c-axis the optical conductivity shows a well developed absorption band around 450 cm^-1 at all temperatures. The in-plane optical properties are dominated by crystal-field excitations at low energies, a prominent step at 400 cm^-1 and a weaker feature between 500 - 550 cm^-1. A comparison of the c-axis optical conductivity and the in-plane scattering rate with neutron scattering derived spin susceptibility spectra suggests that the in-plane and out-of-plane anomalies are caused by the same mechanism, probably electron--spin scattering.

The strong coupling of superconductivity to the orthorhombic distortion in YBa2Cu3O7-d makes possible an analysis of the superconducting fluctuations without the necessity of subtracting any background. The present high-resolution capacitance dilatometry data unambiguously demonstrate the existence of critical, instead of Gaussian, fluctuations over a wide temperature region (+/- 10 K) around Tc. The values of the amplitude ratio A+/A-=0.9-1.1 and the leading scaling exponent |alpha|<0.018, determined via a least-squares fit of the data, are consistent with the 3D-XY universality class. Small deviations from pure 3D-XY behavior are discussed.
