Regular Ring Properties Degraded Through Inverse Limits
Abstract: We give a number of constructions where inverse limits seriously degrade properties of regular rings, such as unit-regularity, diagonalisation of matrices, and finite stable rank. This raises the possibility of using inverse limits to answer the long standing Separativity Problem (in the negative).

A computing strategy and programs to resolve the Gerstenhaber Problem for commuting triples of matrices
Abstract: We describe a MATLAB program that could produce a negative answer to the Gerstenhaber Problem by the construction of three commuting $n \times n$ matrices $A,B,C$ over a field $F$ such that the subalgebra $F[A,B,C]$ they generate has dimension greater than $n$. This problem has remained open for nearly 60 years, following Gerstenhaber's surprising result (Annals Math.) that $\dim F[A,B] \le n$ for… ▽ More

The nilpotent regular element problem
Abstract: We use George Bergman's recent normal form for universally adjoining an inner inverse to show that, for general rings, a nilpotent regular element $x$ need not be unit-regular. This contrasts sharply with the situation for nilpotent regular elements in exchange rings (a large class of rings), and for general rings when all powers of the nilpotent element $x$ are regular.

$K_1$ of separative exchange rings and C*-algebras with real rank zero
Abstract: For any (unital) exchange ring $R$ whose finitely generated projective modules satisfy the separative cancellation property ($A\oplus A\cong A\oplus B\cong B\oplus B$ implies $A\cong B$), it is shown that all invertible square matrices over $R$ can be diagonalized by elementary row and column operations. Consequently, the natural homomorphism $GL_1(R) \to K_1(R)$ is surjective. In combination wi… ▽ More

A new measure of growth for countable-dimensional algebras
Abstract: A new dimension function on countable-dimensional algebras (over a field) is described. Its dimension values for finitely generated algebras exactly fill the unit interval $[0,1]$. Since the free algebra on two generators turns out to have dimension 0 (although conceivably some Noetherian algebras might have positive dimension!), this dimension function promises to distinguish among algebras of… ▽ More
