In Cartan's PhD thesis, there is a formula defining a certain rank 8 vector distribution in dimension 15, whose algebra of authomorphism is the split real form of the simple exceptional complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{f}_4$. Cartan's formula is written in the standard Cartesian coordinates in $\mathbb{R}^{15}$. In the present paper we explain how to find analogous formula for the flat models of any bracket generating distribution $\mathcal D$ whose symbol algebra $\mathfrak{n}({\mathcal D})$ is constant and 2-step graded, $\mathfrak{n}({\mathcal D})=\mathfrak{n}_{-2}\oplus\mathfrak{n}_{-1}$.
The formula is given in terms of a solution to a certain system of linear algebraic equations determined by two representations $(ρ,\mathfrak{n}_{-1})$ and $(τ,\mathfrak{n}_{-2})$ of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{n}_{00}$ contained in the $0$th order Tanaka prolongation $\mathfrak{n}_0$ of $\mathfrak{n}({\mathcal D})$.
Numerous examples are provided, with particular emphasis on the distributions with symmetries being real forms of simple exceptional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{f}_4$ and $\mathfrak{e}_6$.

Thanks to intensive symbolic computer explorations, we then determine embedded vector field generators of these CR symmetries Lie algebras, and we express them in {\em extrinsic} holomorphic coordinates, because intrinsic formulas would be too extended to be shown.

We noticed a discrepancy between Élie Cartan and Sigurdur Helgason about the lowest possible dimension in which the simple exceptional Lie group ${\bf E}_8$ can be realized. This raised the question about the lowest dimensions in which various real forms of the exceptional groups ${\bf E}_\ell$ can be realized. Cartan claims that ${\bf E}_6$ can be realized in dimension 16. However Cartan refers to the complex group ${\bf E}_6$, or its split real form $E_I$. His claim is also valid in the case of the real form denoted by $E_{IV}$. We find however that the real forms $E_{II}$ and $E_{III}$ of ${\bf E}_6$ can not be realized in dimension 16 à la Cartan. In this paper we realize them in dimension 24 as groups of CR automorphisms of certain CR structures of higher codimension.
As a byproduct of these two realizations, we provide a full list of CR structures $(M,H,J)$ and their CR embeddings in an appropriate ${\bf C}^N$, which satisfy the following conditions:
(1) they have real codimension $k>1$,
(2) the real vector distribution $H$ proper for the action of the complex structure $J$ is such that $[H,H]+H=TM$,
(3) the local group $G_J$ of CR automorphisms of the structure $(M,H,J)$ is simple, acts transitively on $M$ and has isotropy $P$ being a parabolic subgroup in $G_J$,
(4) the local symmetry group $G$ of the vector distribution $H$ on $M$ coincides with the group $G_J$ of CR automorphisms of $(M,H,J)$. Because all the CR structures from our list satisfy the last property we call them accidental. Our CR structures of higher codimension with the exceptional symmetries $E_{II}$ and $E_{III}$ are particular entries in this list.

The second and third authors in 2003.08166, by performing highly non-straightforward calculations, conducted the Cartan method of equivalence to classify homogeneous models of PDE systems related to such $\mathfrak{C}^{2,1}$ hypersurfaces $M^5 \subset \mathbb{C}^3$. Kolar-Kossovskiy 1905.05629 and the authors 2003.01952 constructed a formal and a convergent Poincaré-Moser normal form for $\mathfrak{C}_{2,1}$ hypersurfaces $M^5 \subset \mathbb{C}^3$. But this was only a first, preliminary step. Indeed, the invariant branching tree underlying Fels-Kaup's classification was still missing in the literature, due to computational obstacles. The present work applies the power series method of equivalence, confirms Fels-Kaup 2008, and finds a differential-invariant tree. To terminate the middle (thickest) branch, it is necessary to compute up to order $10$ with $5$ variables. Again, calculations, done by hand, are non-straightforward.

We consider a mechanical system of three ants on the floor, which move according to two independt rules: Rule A - forces the velocity of any given ant to always point at a neighboring ant, and Rule B - forces the velocity of every ant to be parallel to the line defined by the two other ants. We observe that Rule A equips the 6-dimensional configuration space of the ants with a structure of a homogeneous (3,6) distribution, and that Rule B foliates this 6-dimensional configuration space onto 5-dimensional leaves, each of which is equiped with a homogeneous (2,3,5) distribution. The symmetry properties and Bryant-Cartan local invariants of these distributions are determined.
In the case of Rule B we study and determine the singular trajectories (abnormal extremals) of the corresponding distributions. We show that these satisfy an interesting system of two ODEs of Fuchsian type.

We consider two consecutive eons $\hat{M}$ and $\check{M}$ from Penrose's Conformal Cyclic Cosmology and study how the matter content of the past eon ($\hat{M}$) determines the matter content of the present eon ($\check{M}$) by means of the reciprocity hypothesis. We assume that the only matter content in the final stages of the past eon is a spherical wave described by Einstein's equations with the pure radiation energy momentum tensor $$\hat{T}^{ij} = \hatΦK^iK^j, \quad \hat{g}_{ij} K^iK^j = 0,$$ and with cosmological constant $\hatΛ$ . We solve these Einstein's equations associating to $\hat{M}$ the metric $\hat{g}=t^{-2}\big(-d t^2+h_t\big)$, which is a Lorentzian analog of the Poincaré-Einstein metric known from the theory of conformal invariants. The solution is obtained under the assumption that the 3-dimensional conformal structure $[h]$ on the $\mathscr{I}^+$ of $\hat{M}$ is flat, that the metric $\hat{g}$ admits a power series expansion in the time variable $t$, and that $h_0\in [h]$. Such solution depends on one real arbitrary function of the radial variable $r$. Applying the reciprocal hypothesis, $\hat{g}\to \check{g}=t^4\hat{g}$, we show that the new eon $(\check{M},\check{g})$ created from the one containing a single spherical wave, is filled at its initial state with three types of radiation: (i) the damped spherical wave which continues its life from the previous eon, (ii) the in-going spherical wave obtained as a result of a collision of the wave from the past eon with the Bang hypersurface and (3) randomly scattered waves that could be interpreted as perfect fluid with the energy density $\checkρ$ and the isotropic pressure $\check{p}$ such that $\check{p}=\tfrac13\checkρ$.

We study the local geometry of 4-manifolds equipped with a \emph{para-Kähler-Einstein} (pKE) metric, a special type of split-signature pseudo-Riemannian metric, and their associated \emph{twistor distribution}, a rank 2 distribution on the 5-dimensional total space of the circle bundle of self-dual null 2-planes. For pKE metrics with nonvanishing Einstein constant this twistor distribution has exactly two integral leaves and is `maximally non-integrable' on their complement, a so-called (2,3,5)-distribution. Our main result establishes a simple correspondence between the anti-self-dual Weyl tensor of a pKE metric with non-vanishing Einstein constant and the Cartan quartic of the associated twistor distribution. This will be followed by a discussion of this correspondence for general split-signature metrics which is shown to be much more involved. We use Cartan's method of equivalence to produce a large number of explicit examples of pKE metrics with nonvanishing Einstein constant whose anti-self-dual Weyl tensor have special real Petrov type. In the case of real Petrov type $D,$ we obtain a complete local classification. Combined with the main result, this produces twistor distributions whose Cartan quartic has the same algebraic type as the Petrov type of the constructed pKE metrics. In a similar manner, one can obtain twistor distributions with Cartan quartic of arbitrary algebraic type. As a byproduct of our pKE examples we naturally obtain para-Sasaki-Einstein metrics in five dimensions. Furthermore, we study various Cartan geometries naturally associated to certain classes of pKE 4-dimensional metrics. We observe that in some geometrically distinguished cases the corresponding \emph{Cartan connections} satisfy the Yang-Mills equations. We then provide explicit examples of such Yang-Mills Cartan connections.

Mainly, we give a geometric interpretation of the third basic invariant of our class of para-CR structures, the simplest one, of lowest order, and of mixed nature $N(G,H):=2G_{ppp}+G_{pp}H_{rr}$. We establish that the vanishing $N(G,H) \equiv 0$ gives an if-and-only-if condition for the two $3$-dimensional quotients of the para-CR manifold by its two canonical integrable rank-$2$ distributions, to be equipped with contact projective geometries. A curious transformation between the Wuenschmann invariant and the Monge invariant, first noted by us in arXiv:2003.08166, is also discussed, and its mysteries are further revealed.

Motivated by recent works in Levi degenerate CR geometry, this article endeavours to study the wider and more flexible para-CR structures for which the constraint of invariancy under complex conjugation is relaxed. We consider $5$-dimensional para-CR structures whose Levi forms are of constant rank $1$ and that are $2$-nondegenerate both with respect to parameters and to variables. Eliminating parameters, such structures may be represented modulo point transformations by pairs of PDEs $z_y=F(x, y, z, z_x)$ $\,\,\&\,\,$ $z_{xxx}=H(x,y,z,z_x,z_{xx})$, with $F$ independent of $z_{xx}$ and $F_{z_xz_x} \neq 0$, that are completely integrable $D_x^3 F=Δ_y H$,
Performing at an advanced level Cartan's method of equivalence, we determine all concerned homogeneous models, together with their symmetries:
(i) $z_y=\tfrac14 (z_x)^2\quad \&\quad z_{xxx}=0$;
(ii) $z_y=\tfrac14 (z_x)^2\quad \& \quad z_{xxx}=(z_{xx})^3$;
(iiia) $z_y=\tfrac14 (z_x)^b\,\, \& \,\,z_{xxx} = (2-b)\frac{(z_{xx})^2}{z_x}$ with $z_x>0$ for any real $b\in[1,2)$;
(iiib) $z_y = f(z_x)\quad \& \quad z_{xxx}=h(z_x)\big(z_{xx}\big)^2$, where the function $f$ is determined by the implicit equation: \[ (z_x^2+f(z_x)^2)\, \mathrm{exp} \left( 2b\,\mathrm{arctan}\tfrac{bz_x-f(z_x)}{z_x+bf(z_x)} \right) = 1+b^2 \] and where: \[ h(z_x) := \frac{(b^2-3)z_x-4bf(z_x)}{(f(z_x)-bz_x)^2}, \] for any real $b>0$.

On a $3$D manifold, a Weyl geometry consists of pairs $(g, A) =$ (metric, $1$-form) modulo gauge $\widehat{g} = {\rm e}^{2\varphi} g$, $\widehat{A} = A + {\rm d}\varphi$. In 1943, Cartan showed that every solution to the Einstein-Weyl equations $R_{(μν)} - \frac{1}{3} R g_{μν} = 0$ comes from an appropriate $3$D leaf space quotient of a $7$D connection bundle associated with a 3$^{\rm rd}$ order ODE $y''' = H(x,y,y',y'')$ modulo point transformations, provided $2$ among $3$ primary point invariants vanish $$ \text{Wünschmann}(H) \equiv 0\equiv \text{Cartan}(H). $$We find that point equivalence of a single PDE $z_y = F(x,y,z,z_x)$ with para-CR integrability $DF := F_x + z_x F_z \equiv 0$ leads to a completely similar $7$D Cartan bundle and connection. Then magically, the (complicated) equation $\text{Wünschmann}(H) \equiv 0$ becomes $$0\equiv\text{Monge}(F):=9F_{pp}^2F_{ppppp}-45F_{pp}F_{ppp}F_{pppp}+40F_{ppp}^3,\qquad p:=z_x, $$ whose solutions are just conics in the $\{p, F\}$-plane. As an ansatz, we take $$F(x,y,z,p):= \frac{α(y)(z-xp)^2+β(y)(z-xp)p+γ(y)(z-xp) +δ(y)p^2+\varepsilon(y)p+ζ(y)}{λ(y)(z-xp)+μ(y) p+ν(y)}, $$ with $9$ arbitrary functions $α, \dots, ν$ of $y$. This $F$ satisfies $DF \equiv 0 \equiv \text{Monge}(F)$, and we show that the condition $\text{Cartan}(H) \equiv 0 $ passes to a certain $\boldsymbol{K}(F) \equiv 0$ which holds for any choice of $α(y), \dots, ν(y)$. Descending to the leaf space quotient, we gain $\infty$-dimensional functionally parametrized and explicit families of Einstein-Weyl structures $\big[ (g, A) \big]$ in $3$D. These structures are nontrivial in the sense that ${\rm d}A \not\equiv 0$ and $\text{Cotton}([g]) \not \equiv 0$.

If M has a projective structure, then C is its twistor space and is equipped with an almost contact Legendrean structure. Instead, if M has a conformal structure, then the saucer moves according to a CR structure on C. With yet another structure on M, the contact distribution in C is equipped with a cone over a twisted cubic. This defines a certain type of Cartan geometry on C (more specifically, a type of `parabolic geometry') and we provide examples when this geometry is `flat,' meaning that its symmetries comprise the split form of the exceptional Lie algebra G2.

Starting from the observation that a flying saucer is a nonholonomic mechanical system whose 5-dimensional configuration space is a contact manifold, we show how to enrich this space with a number of geometric structures by imposing further nonlinear restrictions on the saucer's velocity. These restrictions define certain `manoeuvres' of the saucer, which we call `attacking,' `landing,' or `G2 mode' manoeuvres, and which equip its configuration space with three kinds of flat parabolic geometry in five dimensions. The attacking manoeuvre corresponds to the flat Legendrean contact structure, the landing manoeuvre corresponds to the flat hypersurface type CR structure with Levi form of signature (1,1), and the most complicated G2 manoeuvre corresponds to the contact Engel structure with split real form of the exceptional Lie group G2 as its symmetries. A celebrated double fibration relating the two nonequivalent flat 5-dimensional parabolic G2 geometries is used to construct a `G2 joystick,' consisting of two balls of radii in ratio 1:3 that transforms the difficult G2 manoeuvre into the pilot's action of rolling one of joystick's balls on the other without slip** nor twisting.

A contact twisted cubic structure (M,C,S) is a 5-dimensional manifold M together with a contact distribution C and a bundle S of twisted cubics that is compatible with the conformal symplectic form on C. In Engel's classical work, the Lie algebra of the exceptional Lie group G_2 was realized as the symmetry algebra of the most symmetric contact twisted cubic structure; we thus refer to this one as the contact Engel structure. In the present paper we equip the contact Engel structure with a smooth section s: M-> S that `marks' a point in each twisted cubic. We study the local geometry of the resulting structures (M,C,S,s), which we call marked contact Engel structures. Equivalently, our study can be viewed as a study of foliations of M by curves whose tangent directions are everywhere contained in S. We provide a complete set of local invariants of marked contact Engel structures, we classify all homogeneous models with symmetry groups of dimension greater than 5, and we prove an analogue of the classical Kerr theorem from relativity.

This paper presents strong observational evidence of numerous previously unobserved anomalous circular spots, of significantly raised temperature, in the CMB sky. The spots have angular radii between 0.03 and 0.04 radians (i.e. angular diameters between about 3 and 4 degrees). There is a clear cut-off at that size, indicating that each anomalous spot would have originated from a highly energetic point-like source, located at the end of inflation -- or else point-like at the conformally expanded Big Bang, if it is considered that there was no inflationary phase. The significant presence of these anomalous spots, was initially noticed in the Planck 70 GHz satellite data by comparison with 1000 standard simulations, and then confirmed by extending the comparison to 10000 simulations. Such anomalous points were then found at precisely the same locations in the WMAP data, their significance confirmed by comparison with 1000 WMAP simulations. Planck and WMAP have very different noise properties and it seems exceedingly unlikely that the observed presence of anomalous points in the same directions on both maps may come entirely from the noise. Subsequently, further confirmation was found in the Planck data by comparison with 1000 FFP8.1 MC simulations (with $l \leq 1500$). The existence of such anomalous regions, resulting from point-like sources at the conformally stretched-out big bang, is a predicted consequence of conformal cyclic cosmology (CCC), these sources being the Hawking points of the theory, resulting from the Hawking radiation from supermassive black holes in a cosmic aeon prior to our own.

The conformal Fefferman-Graham ambient metric construction is one of the most fundamental constructions in conformal geometry. It embeds a manifold with a conformal structure into a pseudo-Riemannian manifold whose Ricci tensor vanishes up to a certain order along the original manifold. Despite the general existence result of such ambient metrics by Fefferman and Graham, not many examples of conformal structures with Ricci-flat ambient metrics are known. Motivated by previous examples, for which the Fefferman-Graham equations for the ambient metric to be Ricci-flat reduce to a system of linear PDEs, in the present article we develop a method to find ambient metrics for conformal classes of metrics with two-step nilpotent Schouten tensor. Using this method, for metrics for which the image of the Schouten tensor is invariant under parallel transport, i.e., certain types of Walker metrics, we obtain explicit ambient metrics. This includes certain left-invariant Walker metrics as well as pp-waves.

The recent detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO/VIRGO team is an incredibly impressive achievement of experimental physics. It is also a tremendous success of the theory of General Relativity. It confirms the existence of black holes; shows that binary black holes exist; that they may collide and that during the merging process gravitational waves are produced. These are all predictions of General Relativity theory in its fully nonlinear regime. The existence of gravitational waves was predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916 within the framework of linearized Einstein theory. Contrary to common belief, even the very \emph{definition} of a gravitational wave in the fully nonlinear Einstein theory was provided only after Einstein's death. Actually, Einstein had arguments against the existence of nonlinear gravitational waves (they were erroneous but he did not accept this), which virtually stopped development of the subject until the mid 1950s. This is what we refer to as the \emph{Red Light} for gravitational waves research. In the following years, the theme was picked up again and studied vigorously by various experts, mainly Herman Bondi, Felix Pirani, Ivor Robinson and Andrzej Trautman, where the theoretical obstacles concerning gravitational wave existence were successfully overcome, thus giving the `Green Light' for experimentalists to start designing detectors, culminating in the recent LIGO/VIRGO discovery. In this note we tell the story of this theoretical breakthrough. Particular attention is given to the fundamental 1958 papers of Trautman, which seem to be lesser known outside the circle of General Relativity experts. A more detailed technical description of these 2 papers is given in the Appendix.

$\dot{z}_{ij}=\frac{\partial^2 f(\dot{x}_1,\dot{x}_2)}{\partial \dot{x}_i\partial \dot{x}_j}$, $i\leq j=1,2$. For them we built the full system of local differential invariants, by solving an equivalence problem a'la Cartan, in the spirit of his 1910's five variable paper. The considered geometry is a parabolic geometry, and we show that its main invariant - the harmonic curvature - is a certain quintic. In the case when this quintic is maximally degenerate but nonzero, we use Cartan's reduction procedure and reduce the EDS governing the invariants to 11, 10 and 9 dimensions. As a byproduct all homogeneous models having maximally degenerate harmonic curvature quintic are found. They have symmetry algebras of dimension 11 (a unique structue), 10 (a 1-parameter family of nonequivalent structures) or 9 (precisely two nonequivalent structures).

There are two well-known parabolic split $G_2$-geometries in dimension five, $(2,3,5)$-distributions and $G_2$-contact structures. Here we link these two geometries with yet another $G_2$-related contact structure, which lives on a seven-manifold. We present a natural geometric construction of a Lie contact structure on a seven-dimensional bundle over a five-manifold endowed with a $(2,3,5)$-distribution. For a class of distributions the induced Lie contact structure is constructed explicitly and we determine its symmetries. We further study the relation between the canonical normal Cartan connections associated with the two structures. In particular, we show that the Cartan holonomy of the induced Lie contact structure reduces to $G_2$. Moreover, the curved orbit decomposition associated with a $\mathrm{G}_2$-reduced Lie contact structure on a seven-manifold is discussed. It is shown that in a neighbourhood of each point on the open curved orbit the structure descends to a $(2,3,5)$-distribution on a local leaf space, provided an additional curvature condition is satisfied. The closed orbit carries an induced $G_2$-contact structure.

The null-curves of $(M^4,\pmb{g})$ are given by the "dancing condition": the point is moving towards a point on the line, about which the line is turning. We establish a dictionary between classical projective geometry (incidence, cross ratio, projective duality, projective invariants of plane curves...) and pseudo-riemannian 4-dimensional conformal geometry (null-curves and geodesics, parallel transport, self-dual null 2-planes, the Weyl curvature,...). There is also an unexpected bonus: by applying a twistor construction to $(M^4,\pmb{g})$, a $\mathrm G_2$-symmetry emerges, hidden deep in classical projective geometry. To uncover this symmetry, one needs to refine the "dancing condition" by a higher-order condition, expressed in terms of the osculating conic along a plane curve. The outcome is a correspondence between curves in the projective plane and its dual, a projective geometry analog of the more familiar "rolling without slip** and twisting" for a pair of riemannian surfaces.

We introduce a class of overdetermined systems of partial differential equations of finite type on (pseudo)-Riemannian manifolds that we call the generalised Ricci soliton equations. These equations depend on three real parameters. For special values of the parameters they specialise to various important classes of equations in differential geometry. Among them there are: the Ricci soliton equations, the vacuum near-horizon geometry equations in general relativity, special cases of Einstein-Weyl equations and their projective counterparts, equations for homotheties and Killing's equation.
We also prolong the generalised Ricci soliton equations and, by computing differential constraints, we find a number of necessary conditions for a (pseudo)-Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ to locally admit non-trivial solutions to the generalised Ricci soliton equations in dimensions 2 and 3.
The paper provides also a collection of explicit examples of generalised Ricci solitons in dimensions 2 and 3 (in some cases).

In this paper we study a novel class of parabolic geometries which we call parabolic geometries of Monge type. These parabolic geometries are defined by special gradings of simple Lie algebras, namely, gradings with the property that their -1 component contains a nonzero co-dimension 1 abelian subspace whose bracket with its complement is non-degenerate. We completely classify the simple Lie algebras with such gradings in terms of elementary properties of the defining set of simple roots. We then characterize those parabolic geometries of Monge type which are non-rigid in the sense that, apart from the flat models, they have nonzero harmonic curvatures in positive weights. Standard models of all non-rigid parabolic geometries of Monge type are then described by under-determined ODE systems. The full symmetry algebras for these under-determined ODE systems are explicitly calculated; surprisingly, these symmetries are all just prolonged point symmetries.

On a natural circle bundle T(M) over a 4-dimensional manifold M equipped with a split signature metric g, whose fibers are real totally null selfdual 2-planes, we consider a tautological rank 2 distribution D obtained by lifting each totally null plane horizontally to its point in the fiber. Over the open set where g is not antiselfdual, the distribution D is (2,3,5) in T(M). We show that if M is a Cartesian product of two Riemann surfaces (S1,g1) and (S2,g2), and if g=g1--g2, then the circle bundle T(S1 x S2) is just the configuration space for the physical system of two solid bodies B1 and B2, bounded by the surfaces S1 and S2 and rolling on each other. The condition for the two bodies to roll on each other `without slip** or twisting' identifies the restricted velocity space for such a system with the tautological distribution D on T(S1 x S2). We call T(S1 x S2) the twistor space, and D the twistor distribution for the rolling bodies. Among others we address the following question: "For which pairs of bodies does the restricted velocity distribution (which we identify with the twistor distribution D) have the simple Lie group G2 as its group of symmetries?" Apart from the well known situation when the boundaries S1 and S2 of the two bodies have constant curvatures whose ratio is 1:9, we unexpectedly find three different types of surfaces, which when bounding a body that rolls `without slip** or twisting' on a plane, have D with the symmetry group G2. Although we have found the differential equations for the curvatures of S1 and S2 that gives D with G2 symmetry, we are unable to solve them in full generality so far.

This framework provides a uniform approach to treating a range of geometries. In particular we are able to construct an invariant and efficient calculus for conformal almost Hermitian geometries, and also for almost complex structures that are equipped with a projective structure. In the latter case we find a projectively invariant tensor the vanishing of which is necessary and sufficient for the existence of an almost complex connection compatible with the path structure. In both the conformal and projective setting we give torsion characterisations of the canonical connections and introduce certain interesting higher order invariants.

Starting from the classical notion of an oriented congruence (i.e. a foliation by oriented curves) in $R^3$, we abstract the notion of an oriented congruence structure. This is a 3-dimensional CR manifold $(M,H, J)$ with a preferred splitting of the tangent space $TM=V\oplus H$. We find all local invariants of such structures using Cartan's equivalence method refining Cartan's classification of 3-dimensional CR structures. We use these invariants and perform Fefferman like constructions, to obtain interesting Lorentzian metrics in four dimensions, which include explicit Ricci-flat and Einstein metrics, as well as not conformally Einstein Bach-flat metrics.

We describe 4th order ODEs satisfying two contact invariant conditions of Bryant in terms of the Ricci tensor of a certain gl(2,R) valued connection. We also provide nonhomogeneous examples of such ODEs.

We study five dimensional geometries associated with the 5-dimensional irreducible representation of GL(2,R). These are special Weyl geometries in signature (3,2) having the structure group reduced from CO(3,2) to GL(2,R). The reduction is obtained by means of a conformal class of totally symmetric 3-tensors. Among all GL(2,R) geometries we distinguish a subclass which we term `nearly integrable GL(2,R)geometries'. These define a unique gl(2,R) connection which has totally skew symmetric torsion. This torsion splits onto the GL(2,R) irreducible components having respective dimensions 3 and 7.
We prove that on the solution space of every 5th order ODE satisfying certain three nonlinear differential conditions there exists a nearly integrable GL(2,R) geometry such that the skew symmetric torsion of its unique gl(2,R) connection is very special. In contrast to an arbitrary nearly integrable GL(2,R) geometry, it belongs to the 3-dimensional irreducible representation of GL(2,R). The conditions for the existence of the structure are lower order equivalents of the Doubrov-Wilczynski conditions found recently by Boris Doubrov [7].
We provide nontrivial examples of 5th order ODEs satisfying the three nonlinear differential conditions, which in turn provides examples of inhomogeneous GL(2,R) geometries in dimension five, with torsion in R^3. We also outline the theory and the basic properties of GL(2,R) geometries associated with n-dimensional irreducible representations of GL(2,R) in 5<n<10. In particular we give conditions for an n-th order ODE to possess this geometry on its solution space.

We prove several theorems concerning the connection between the local CR embeddability of 3-dimensional CR manifolds, and the existence of algebraically special Maxwell and gravitational fields. We reduce the Einstein equations for spacetimes associated with such fields to a system of CR invariant equations on a 3-dimensional CR manifold defined by the fields. Using the reduced Einstein equations we construct two independent CR functions for the corresponding CR manifold. We also point out that the Einstein equations, imposed on spacetimes associated with a 3-dimensional CR manifold, imply that the spacetime metric, after an appropriate rescaling, becomes well defined on a circle bundle over the CR manifold. The circle bundle itself emerges as a consequence of Einstein's equations.

Conformal structures with explicit ambient metrics and conformal G_2 holonomy

Abstract:
Given a generic 2-plane field on a 5-dimensional manifold we consider its (3,2)-signature conformal metric [g] as defined in math.DG/0406400. Given a generic 2-plane field on a 5-dimensional manifold we consider its (3,2)-signature conformal metric [g] as defined in math.DG/0406400. Every conformal class [g] obtained in this way has very special conformal holonomy: it must be contained in the split-real-form of the exceptional group G_2. In this note we show that for special 2-plane fields on 5-manifolds the conformal classes [g] have the Fefferman-Graham ambient metrics which, contrary to the general Fefferman-Graham metrics given as a formal power series, can be written in an explicit form. We propose to study the relations between the conformal G_2-holonomy of metrics [g] and the possible pseudo-Riemannian G_2-holonomy of the corresponding ambient metrics.
