Smart manufacturing is a vision and major driver for change in industrial environments. The goal of smart manufacturing is to optimize manufacturing processes through constantly monitoring and adapting processes towards more efficient and personalised manufacturing. This requires and relies on technologies for connected machines incorporating a variety of computation, sensing, actuation, and machine to machine communications modalities. As such, understanding the change towards smart manufacturing requires knowledge of the enabling technologies, their applications in real world scenarios and the communications protocols that they rely on. This paper presents an extensive review of wireless machine to machine communication protocols currently applied in manufacturing environments and provides a comprehensive review of the associated use cases whilst defining their expected impact on the future of smart manufacturing. We are witnessing a transition to a new era where driverless cars will be pervasively connected to deliver significantly improved safety, traffic efficiency, and travel experiences. A diverse set of advanced vehicular use cases including connected autonomous vehicles will be made possible by building upon the emerging sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. Among many 6G wireless technologies, the principal objective of this paper is to introduce the potential benefits of the hybrid integration of Vehicular Visible Light Communication (V VLC) and Vehicular Radio Frequency (V RF) communication systems by studying the impact of interference as well as various meteorological phenomenon viz. rain, fog and dry snow. In particular, we show that regardless of any meteorological impact, a properly configured link-aggregated hybrid V-VLC/V-RF system is capable of meeting stringent ultra high reliability (>99.999%) and ultra-low latency (<3 ms) requirements, making it a promising candidate for 6G Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communications. To stimulate future research in the hybrid RF-VLC V2X space, we also highlight the potential challenges and research directions.

DNA Data storage has recently attracted much attention due to its durable preservation and extremely high information density (bits per gram) properties. In this work, we propose a hybrid coding strategy comprising of generalized constrained codes to tackle homopolymer (run-length) limit and a protograph based low-density parity-check (LDPC) code to correct asymmetric nucleotide level (i.e., A/T/C/G) substitution errors that may occur in the process of DNA sequencing. Two sequencing techniques namely, Nanopore sequencer and Illumina sequencer with their equivalent channel models and capacities are analyzed. A coding architecture is proposed to potentially eliminate the catastrophic errors caused by the error-propagation in the constrained decoding while enabling high coding potential. We also show the log likelihood ratio (LLR) calculation method for the belief propagation decoding with this coding architecture. The simulation results and the theoretical analysis show that the proposed coding scheme exhibits good bit-error rate (BER) performance and high coding potential ($\sim1.98$ bits per nucleotide).

We are on the cusp of a new era of connected autonomous vehicles with unprecedented user experiences, tremendously improved road safety and air quality, highly diverse transportation environments and use cases, as well as a plethora of advanced applications. Realizing this grand vision requires a significantly enhanced vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication network which should be extremely intelligent and capable of concurrently supporting hyper-fast, ultra-reliable, and low-latency massive information exchange. It is anticipated that the sixth-generation (6G) communication systems will fulfill these requirements of the next-generation V2X. In this article, we outline a series of key enabling technologies from a range of domains, such as new materials, algorithms, and system architectures. Aiming for truly intelligent transportation systems, we envision that machine learning will play an instrumental role for advanced vehicular communication and networking. To this end, we provide an overview on the recent advances of machine learning in 6G vehicular networks. Networked control systems have gained considerable attention over the last decade as a result of the trend towards decentralised control applications and the emergence of cyber-physical system applications. However, real-world wireless networked control systems suffer from limited communication bandwidths, reliability issues, and a lack of awareness of network dynamics due to the complex nature of wireless networks. Combining machine learning and event-triggered control has the potential to alleviate some of these issues. For example, machine learning can be used to overcome the problem of a lack of network models by learning system behavior or adapting to dynamically changing models by continuously learning model dynamics. Event-triggered control can help to conserve communication bandwidth by transmitting control information only when necessary or when resources are available. The purpose of this article is to conduct a review of the literature on the use of machine learning in combination with event-triggered control. Machine learning techniques such as statistical learning, neural networks, and reinforcement learning-based approaches such as deep reinforcement learning are being investigated in combination with event-triggered control. We discuss how these learning algorithms can be used for different applications depending on the purpose of the machine learning use. Following the review and discussion of the literature, we highlight open research questions and challenges associated with machine learning-based event-triggered control and suggest potential solutions.

DNA code design aims to generate a set of DNA sequences (codewords) with minimum likelihood of undesired hybridizations among sequences and their reverse-complement (RC) pairs (cross-hybridization). Inspired by the distinct hybridization affinities (or stabilities) of perfect double helix constructed by individual single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) and its RC pair, we propose a novel similarity significance (SS) model to measure the similarity between DNA sequences. Particularly, instead of directly measuring the similarity of two sequences by any metric/approach, the proposed SS works in a way to evaluate how more likely will the undesirable hybridizations occur over the desirable hybridizations in the presence of the two measured sequences and their RC pairs. With this SS model, we construct thermodynamically stable DNA codes subject to several combinatorial constraints using a sorting-based algorithm. The proposed scheme results in DNA codes with larger code sizes and wider free energy gaps (hence better cross-hybridization performance) compared to the existing methods.

Vehicular networks, an enabling technology for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), smart cities, and autonomous driving, can deliver numerous on-board data services, e.g., road-safety, easy navigation, traffic efficiency, comfort driving, infotainment, etc. Providing satisfactory Quality of Service (QoS) in vehicular networks, however, is a challenging task due to a number of limiting factors such as erroneous and congested wireless channels (due to high mobility or uncoordinated channel-access), increasingly fragmented and congested spectrum, hardware imperfections, and anticipated growth of vehicular communication devices. Therefore, it will be critical to allocate and utilize the available wireless network resources in an ultra-efficient manner. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey on resource allocation schemes for the two dominant vehicular network technologies, e.g. Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) and cellular based vehicular networks. We discuss the challenges and opportunities for resource allocations in modern vehicular networks and outline a number of promising future research directions.

In this paper, we study the bidirectional/two-way relaying of molecular communication and propose a relaying scheme with two time slots. Compared to the four-time-slot and three-time-slot schemes, the proposed two-time-slot scheme improves the throughput by a significant extent by allowing the end nodes to transmit simultaneously at the very first time slot. In contrast to the existing techniques, the proposed scheme employs a homogeneous molecular communication for bidirectional relaying where all the nodes (i.e., end nodes and relay node) are allowed to operate on the same type of molecule instead of utilizing different types of molecule for different nodes. As a result, this proposal of homogeneous molecular relaying remarkably improves the resource reuse capability. This paper generically characterizes the transmission and detection strategies of the proposed scheme. Moreover, we derive the analytical bit error probabilities for the multiple access and broadcast phases and present the end-to-end bit error probability of the proposed scheme. It's noteworthy that we take it into account the effect of molecular interference in the theoretical derivations. Extensive simulation is carried out, and it is shown that simulation results match very well with the derived theoretical analysis.
