With this motivation, we discuss how the character of redox orbitals of LiNiO$_2$ can be ascertained through x-ray Compton scattering measurements combined with parallel first-principles simulations. Our analysis reveals the nature of hole states in Li-doped NiO resulting from the hybridization of O 2$p$ and Ni 3$d$ orbitals. Our study also gives insight into the ferromagnetic ground state and provides a pathway toward the rational design of next-generation battery materials.

Van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials are comprised of layers of atomically thin sheets, making them ideal platforms for studying magnetism at the two-dimensional (2D) limit. These materials are at the center of a host of novel types of experiments, however, there are notably few pathways to directly probe their magnetic structure. We report the magnetic order within a single crystal of NiPS$_3$ and show it can be accessed with resonant elastic X-ray diffraction along the edge of the vdW planes in a carefully grown crystal by detecting structurally forbidden resonant magnetic X-ray scattering. We find the magnetic order parameter has a critical exponent of $β\sim0.36$, indicating that the magnetism of these vdW crystals is more adequately characterized by the three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg universality class. We verify these findings with first-principle density functional theory, Monte-Carlo simulations, and density matrix renormalization group calculations.

Evidence is growing that a second dome of high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductivity can be accessed in the cuprates by increasing the do** beyond the first dome. Here we use \emph{ab initio} methods without invoking any free parameters, such as the Hubbard $U$, to reveal that pressure could turn YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ into an ideal candidate for second-dome-superconductivity, displaying the predicted signature of strongly hybridized $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{z^2}$ orbitals. Notably, pressure is found to induce a phase transition replacing the antiferromagnetic phases with an orbitally-degenerate $d$--$d$ phase. Our study suggests that the origin of the second dome is correlated with the oxygen-hole fraction in the CuO$_2$ planes and the collapse of the pseudogap phase.

Understanding similarities and differences between the cuprate and nickelate superconductors is drawing intense current interest. Competing charge orders have been observed recently in the $undoped$ infinite-layer nickelates in sharp contrast to the $undoped$ cuprates which exhibit robust antiferromagnetic insulating ground states. The microscopic mechanisms driving these differences remain unclear. Here, using in-depth first-principles and many-body theory based modeling, we show that the parent compound of the nickelate family, LaNiO$_2$, hosts a charge density wave (CDW) ground state with the predicted wavevectors in accord with the corresponding experimental findings. The CDW ground state is shown to be connected to a multi-orbital Peierls distortion. Our study points to the key role of electron-phonon coupling effects in the infinite-layer nickelates.

Recent discovery of superconductivity in the doped infinite-layer nickelates has renewed interest in understanding the nature of high-temperature superconductivity more generally. The low-energy electronic structure of the parent compound NdNiO$_{2}$, the role of electronic correlations in driving superconductivity, and the possible relationship betweeen the cuprates and the nickelates are still open questions. Here, by comparing LaNiO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$ systematically within a parameter-free density functional framework, all-electron first-principles framework, we reveal the role Nd 4$f$ electrons in sha** the ground state of pristine NdNiO$_2$. Strong similarities are found between the electronic structures of LaNiO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$, except for the effects of the 4$f$-electrons. Hybridization between the Nd 4$f$ and Ni 3$d$ orbitals is shown to significantly modify the Fermi surfaces of various magnetic states. In contrast, the competition between the magnetically ordered phases depends mainly on the gaps in the Ni $d_{x2-y2}$ band, so that the ground state in LaNiO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$ turns out to be striking similarity to that of the cuprates. The $d-p$ band-splitting is found to be much larger while the intralayer 3$d$ ion-exchange coupling is smaller in the nickelates compared to the cuprates. Our estimated value of the on-site Hubbard $U$ is similar to that in the cuprates, but the value of the Hund's coupling $J_H$ is found to be sensitive to the Nd magnetic moment. The exchange coupling $J$ in NdNiO$_2$ is only half as large as in the curpates, which may explain why $T_c$ in the nickelates is half as large as the cuprates.

The stability of the nonmodulated martensitic phase, the austenitic Fermi surface and the phonon dispersion relations for ferromagnetic Ni$_2$MnGa are studied using density functional theory. Exchange-correlation effects are considered with various degrees of precision, starting from the simplest local spin density approximation (LSDA), then adding corrections within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and finally, including the meta-GGA corrections within the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN). We discuss a simple procedure to reduce a possible overestimation of magnetization and underestimation of nesting vector in SCAN by parametrically decreasing self-interaction corrections.

Bismuth has recently attracted interest in connection with Na-ion battery anodes due to its high volumetric capacity. It reacts with Na to form Na$_3$Bi which is a prototypical Dirac semimetal with a nontrivial electronic structure. Density-functional-theory based first-principles calculations are playing a key role in understanding the fascinating electronic structure of Na$_3$Bi and other topological materials. In particular, the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) meta-generalized-gradient-approximation (meta-GGA) has shown significant improvement over the widely used generalized-gradient-approximation (GGA) scheme in capturing energetic, structural, and electronic properties of many classes of materials. Here, we discuss the electronic structure of Na$_3$Bi within the SCAN framework and show that the resulting Fermi velocities and {\it s}-band shift around the $Γ$ point are in better agreement with experiments than the corresponding GGA predictions. SCAN yields a purely spin-orbit-coupling (SOC) driven Dirac semimetal state in Na$_3$Bi in contrast with the earlier GGA results. Our analysis reveals the presence of a topological phase transition from the Dirac semimetal to a trivial band insulator phase in Na$_{3}$Bi$_{x}$Sb$_{1-x}$ alloys as the strength of the SOC varies with Sb content, and gives insight into the role of the SOC in modulating conduction properties of Na$_3$Bi.

Our density functional theory calculations based on the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) exchange correlation functional in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ reveal the persistence of magnetic moments on the copper ions for oxygen concentrations ranging from the pristine phase to the optimally hole-doped compound. We also find the existence of ferrimagnetic solutions in the heavily doped compounds, which are expected to suppress superconductivity.

We have investigated the interplay between magnetic and structural degrees of freedom in elemental Mn. The equilibrium volume is shown to depend critically on the magnetic interactions between the Mn atoms. While the standard generalized-gradient-approximation underestimates the equilibrium volume, a more accurate treatment of the effects of electronic localization and magnetism is found to solve this longstanding problem. We capture well the complexity of the large 58 atoms per unit cell $α$-Mn system for the first time, including its charge and spin patterns and the canting of spins with respect to the average magnetization direction.

The strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) semi-local functional for exchange-correlation is deployed to study the ground-state properties of ternary Heusler alloys transforming martensitically. The calculations are performed for ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and antiferromagnetic phases. Comparisons between SCAN and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) are discussed. We find that SCAN yields smaller lattice parameters and higher magnetic moments compared to the GGA corresponding values for both austenite and martensite phases. Furthermore, in the case of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic Heusler compounds, GGA and SCAN display similar trends in the total energy as a function of lattice constant and tetragonal ratio. However, for some ferrimagnetic Mn-rich Heusler compounds, different magnetic ground states are found within GGA and SCAN.

We have performed density functional theory calculations of graphene decorated with carbon adatoms, which bind at the bridge site of a C--C bond. Earlier studies have shown that the C adatoms have magnetic moments and have suggested the possibility of ferromagnetism with high Curie temperature. Here we propose to use a gate voltage to fine tune the magnetic moments from zero to 1$μ_B$ while changing the magnetic coupling from antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism and again to antiferromagnetism. These results are rationalized within the Stoner and RKKY models. When the SCAN meta-GGA correction is used, the magnetic moments for zero gate voltage are reduced and the Stoner band ferromagnetism is slightly weakened in the ferromagnetic region.

We apply a molecular dynamics scheme to analyze classically chaotic properties of a two-dimensional circular billiard system containing two Coulomb-interacting electrons. As such, the system resembles a prototype model for a semiconductor quantum dot. The interaction strength is varied from the noninteracting limit with zero potential energy up to the strongly interacting regime where the relative kinetic energy approaches zero. At weak interactions the bouncing maps show jumps between quasi-regular orbits. In the strong-interaction limit we find an analytic expression for the bouncing map. Its validity in the general case is assessed by comparison with our numerical data. To obtain a more quantitative view on the dynamics as the interaction strength is varied, we compute and analyze the escape rates of the system. Apart from very weak or strong interactions, the escape rates show consistently exponential behavior, thus suggesting strongly chaotic dynamics and a phase space without significant sticky regions within the considered time scales.
