Similarly, Radar-based Communications (RadCom) proposes the use of the radar spectrum for communication puproses. In this paper, we perform an analysis of the channel capacity for different configurations of RadCom, showing its potential to offload the V2X spectrum for bumper-to-bumper V2X applications. Pauli blocking in Fermi liquids imposes strong phase-space constraints on quasiparticle lifetimes, leading to a well-known quadratic-in-temperature decay rate of quasiparticle modes at low temperatures. In two-dimensional systems, however, even longer-lived modes are predicted (dubbed "odd-parity" modes). Here, we present an efficient method to evaluate the full spectrum of relaxational eigenmodes of a Fermi liquid within kinetic theory. We employ this method to study the experimentally relevant case of a Fermi liquid with screened Coulomb interactions and map out the decay rates of quasiparticle modes beyond the asymptotic low temperature limit up to the Fermi temperature, thus covering the temperature range of typical experiments. We confirm the existence of anomalously long-lived odd-parity modes and provide a comprehensive classification and detailed analysis of the relaxation spectrum. In particular, we find that (i) the odd-parity effect in the decay rates extends to temperatures as large as $T=0.1T_F$; (ii) there is only a small number of long-lived odd-parity modes, with an infinite number of remaining modes that show standard Fermi-liquid scaling; (iii) the ratio between the odd- and even-parity lifetimes is tunable with the Coulomb interaction strength, not just temperature, which reflects a difference in the microscopic relaxation mechanism of the modes. Our findings provide a comprehensive description of the nonequilibrium relaxation behavior of two-dimensional electron gases and bridge a significant gap in our understanding of these systems.

We propose nodal auxiliary space preconditioners for facet and edge virtual elements of lowest order by deriving discrete regular decompositions on polytopal grids and generalizing the Hiptmair-Xu preconditioner to the virtual element framework. The preconditioner consists of solving a sequence of elliptic problems on the nodal virtual element space, combined with appropriate smoother steps. Under assumed regularity of the mesh, the preconditioned system is proven to have bounded spectral condition number independent of the mesh size and this is verified by numerical experiments on a sequence of polygonal meshes. Moreover, we observe numerically that the preconditioner is robust on meshes containing elements with high aspect ratios.

The present paper evaluates the potential of using Radar-Based Communication (RadCom) for offloading the V2X spectrum. We consider a heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) platooning scenario as a case of maneuver coordination where local messages are transmitted by means of RadCom at different penetration rates. Simulations show significant improvements in channel occupation and network reliability. As a result, RadCom allows for shorter safe and energy efficient inter-vehicle distances.

In interaction-dominated two-dimensional electron gases at intermediate temperatures, electron transport is not diffusive as in the conventional Drude picture but instead hydrodynamic. The relevant transport coefficient in this regime is the shear viscosity. Here, we develop a numerically exact basis expansion to solve the Fermi liquid equation, and apply it to compute the shear viscosity of the electron gas with screened Coulomb interactions. Our calculations are valid at all temperatures and in particular describe the response beyond the asymptotic low-temperature limit, where perturbative approaches exist. We show that even in this low-temperature limit, there is a nonanalytic exchange contribution to the shear viscosity, highlighting the need for a full nonperturbative solution of the Fermi liquid equation. We hope that the techniques developed in this work will serve as a platform to determine the response of interacting Fermi liquids.

Feature tracking is a common task in visualization applications, where methods based on topological data analysis (TDA) have successfully been applied in the past for feature definition as well as tracking. In this work, we focus on tracking extrema of temporal scalar fields. A family of TDA approaches address this task by establishing one-to-one correspondences between extrema based on discrete gradient vector fields. More specifically, two extrema of subsequent time steps are matched if they fall into their respective ascending and descending manifolds. However, due to this one-to-one assignment, these approaches are prone to fail where, e.g., extrema are located in regions with low gradient magnitude, or are located close to boundaries of the manifolds. Therefore, we propose a probabilistic matching that captures a larger set of possible correspondences via neighborhood sampling, or by computing the overlap of the manifolds. We illustrate the usefulness of the approach with two application cases.

The squashed seven-sphere operator spectrum is completed by deriving the spectrum of the spin-3/2 operator. The implications of the results for the $AdS_4$ $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supermultiplets obtained from compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity are analysed. The weak $G_2$ holonomy plays an important role when solving the eigenvalue equations on the squashed sphere. Here, a novel and more universal algebraic approach to the whole eigenvalue problem on coset manifolds is provided. Having obtained full control of all the operator spectra, we can finally determine the irreps $D(E_0, s)$ for all supermultiplets in the left-squashed vacuum. This includes an analysis of possible boundary conditions. By performing an orientation flip on the seven-sphere, we also obtain the full spectrum for the non-supersymmetric right-squashed compactification which is of interest in the swampland context and in particular for the $AdS$ swampland conjecture. Here, a number of boundary condition ambiguities arise making the analysis of dual marginal operators somewhat involved. This work is a direct continuation of [1] and [2].

We develop two unfitted cut finite element methods for the Stokes equations based on $\mathbf{H}^{\text{div}}$-conforming finite elements which exhibit optimal convergence order for the velocity, pointwise divergence-free velocity fields, and well-posed linear systems, independently of the position of the boundary relative to the computational mesh. The first method is based on the Brezzi-Douglas-Marini (BDM) elements and involves interior penalty terms to enforce tangential continuity of the velocity at interior edges in the mesh. The second method is a 3-field formulation involving the vorticity, velocity, and pressure and uses the Raviart-Thomas (RT) space for the velocity. We present mixed ghost penalty stabilization terms for both methods so that the resulting discrete problems are stable and the divergence-free property of the $\mathbf{H}^{\text{div}}$-conforming elements is preserved also on unfitted meshes. In both methods boundary conditions are imposed weakly. We show that imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions weakly introduces additional challenges; 1) The divergence-free property of the RT and the BDM finite elemens may be lost depending on how the normal component of the velocity field at the boundary is imposed. 2) Pressure robustness is affected by how well the boundary conditions are satisfied and may not hold even if the incompressibility condition holds pointwise. We study two approaches of weakly imposing the normal component of the velocity at the boundary; we either use a penalty parameter and Nitsche's method or a Lagrange multiplier method. We show that appropriate conditions on the velocity space has to be imposed when Nitsche's method is used. Pressure robustness can hold with both approaches by reducing the error at the boundary but this impacts the condition numbers of linear systems, independent of if the mesh is fitted or unfitted to the boundary.

Some of the properties of these modes, connected to the transition from the round $S^7$ to the squashed $S^7$, are analysed in detail. Special features of the Rarita-Schwinger operator, described in earlier work by Buchdahl, are explained and related to properties of the squashed $S^7$ operator spectrum obtained in previous work by the authors. We then discuss how the singlet modes give rise to supermultiplets in the left-squashed case, the phenomenon of de-Higgsing, and what happens to the AdS$_4$ fields in these supermultiplets under an orientation reversal (``skew-whiffing'') of the squashed $S^7$. Finally, we consider the possible choices of boundary conditions that appear for some of these fields in AdS$_4$ in the case of the right-squashed non-supersymmetric compactification, and how these choices may affect the stability of the gravity theory.

We study cut finite element discretizations of a Darcy interface problem based on the mixed finite element pairs $\textbf{RT}_k\times Q_k$, $k\geq 0$. Here $Q_k$ is the space of discontinuous polynomial functions of degree less or equal to $k$ and $\textbf{RT}$ is the Raviart-Thomas space. We show that the standard ghost penalty stabilization, often added in the weak forms of cut finite element methods for stability and control of the condition number of the linear system matrix, destroys the divergence-free property of the considered element pairs. Therefore, we propose new stabilization terms for the pressure and show that we recover the optimal approximation of the divergence without losing control of the condition number of the linear system matrix. We prove that the method with the new stabilization term has pointwise divergence-free approximations of solenoidal velocity fields. We derive a priori error estimates for the proposed unfitted finite element discretization based on $\textbf{RT}_k\times Q_k$, $k\geq 0$. In addition, by decomposing the mesh into macro-elements and applying ghost penalty terms only on interior edges of macro-elements, stabilization is applied very restrictively and only where needed. Numerical experiments with element pairs $\textbf{RT}_0\times Q_0$, $\textbf{RT}_1\times Q_1$, and $\textbf{BDM}_1\times Q_0$ (where $\textbf{BDM}$ is the Brezzi-Douglas-Marini space) indicate that we have 1) optimal rates of convergence of the approximate velocity and pressure; 2) well-posed linear systems where the condition number of the system matrix scales as it does for fitted finite element discretizations; 3) optimal rates of convergence of the approximate divergence with pointwise divergence-free approximations of solenoidal velocity fields. All three properties hold independently of how the interface is positioned relative to the computational mesh.

In 1964, Milnor used a construction of Witt to find an example of isospectral non-isometric Riemannian manifolds, a striking and concise result that occupied one page in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science of the USA. Milnor's example is a pair of 16-dimensional flat tori, whose set of Laplace eigenvalues are identical, in spite of the fact that these tori are not isometric. A natural question is: what is the \em lowest \em dimension in which such isospectral non-isometric pairs exist? This isospectral question for flat tori can be equivalently formulated in analytic, geometric, and number theoretic language. We explore this question from all three perspectives and describe its resolution by Schiemann in the 1990s. Moreover, we share a number of open problems.

This way we discover features of the spectra which makes it possible to argue that the only way the round spectrum can be related by a Higgs mechanism to the one of $LS^7$ is if the singletons are included in the round sphere spectrum. For this to work also in the $RS^7$ case it seems that the gravitino of the $LS^7$ spectrum must be replaced by a fermionic singleton present in the $RS^7$ spectrum.

In the context of three-dimensional conformal higher spin theory we derive, in the frame field formulation, the full non-linear spin 3 Cotton equation coupled to spin 2. This is done by solving the corresponding Chern-Simons gauge theory system of equations, that is, using $F=0$ to eliminate all auxiliary fields and thus expressing the Cotton equation in terms of just the spin 3 frame field and spin 2 covariant derivatives and tensors (Schouten). In this derivation we neglect the spin 4 and higher spin sectors and approximate the star product commutator by a Poisson bracket. The resulting spin 3 Cotton equation is complicated but can be related to linearized versions in the metric formulation obtained previously by other authors. The expected symmetry (spin 3 "translation", "Lorentz" and "dilatation") properties are verified for Cotton and other relevant tensors but some perhaps unexpected features emerge in the process, in particular in relation to the non-linear equations. We discuss the structure of this non-linear spin 3 Cotton equation but its explicit form is only presented here, in an exact but not completely refined version, in appended files obtained by computer algebra methods. Both the frame field and metric formulations are provided.

Both the higher spin equation and the unfolded equation for the scalar field have source terms and are based on a conformal higher spin algebra which we treat as an expansion in multi-commutators. Explicit expressions for the source terms are suggested and subjected to some simple tests. We also discuss a cascading relation between the Chern-Simons action for the higher spin gauge theory and an action containing a term for each spin that generalizes the spin 2 Chern-Simons action in terms of the spin connection expressed in terms of the frame field. This cascading property is demonstrated in the free theory for spin 3 but should work also in the complete higher spin theory.

Runaway electrons (REs) can be generated in tokamak plasmas if the accelerating force from the toroidal electric field exceeds the collisional drag force due to Coulomb collisions with the background plasma. In ITER, disruptions are expected to generate REs mainly through knock-on collisions, where enough momentum can be transferred from existing runaways to slow electrons to transport the latter beyond a critical momentum, setting off an avalanche of REs. Since knock-on runaways are usually scattered off with a significant perpendicular component of the momentum with respect to the local magnetic field direction, these particles are highly magnetized. Consequently, the momentum dynamics require a full 3-D kinetic description, since these electrons are highly sensitive to the magnetic non-uniformity of a toroidal configuration. A bounce-averaged knock-on source term is derived. The generation of REs from the combined effect of Dreicer mechanism and knock-on collision process is studied with the code LUKE, a solver of the 3-D linearized bounce-averaged relativistic electron Fokker-Planck equation, through the calculation of the response of the electron distribution function to a constant parallel electric field. This work shows that the avalanche effect can be important even in non-disruptive scenarios. RE formation through knock-on collisions is found to be strongly reduced when taking place off the magnetic axis, since trapped electrons cannot contribute to the RE population. The relative importance of the avalanche mechanism is investigated as a function of the key parameters for RE formation; the plasma temperature and the electric field strength. In agreement with theoretical predictions, the simulations show that in low temperature and E-field knock-on collisions are the dominant source of REs and can play a significant role for RE generation, including in non-disruptive scenarios.

The sustainment of steady-state plasmas in tokamaks requires efficient current drive systems. Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) is currently the most efficient method to generate a continuous additional off-axis toroidal plasma current as well as reduce the poloidal flux consumption during the plasma current ramp-up phase. The operation of the Tore Supra ITER-like LH launcher has demonstrated the capability to couple LH power at ITER-like power densities with very low reflected power during long pulses. In addition, the installation of eight 700kW/CW klystrons at the LH transmitter has allowed increasing the total LH power in long pulse scenarios. However, in order to achieve pure stationary LH sustained plasmas, some R\&D are needed to increase the reliability of all the systems and codes, from the RF sources to the plasma scenario prediction. The CEA/IRFM is addressing some of these issues by leading a R\&D program towards an ITER LH system and by the validation of an integrated LH modeling suite of codes. In 2011, the RF design of a mode converter has been validated at low power. A 500 kW/5 s RF window is currently under manufacturing and will be tested at high power in 2012 in collaboration with NFRI. All of this work aims to reduce the operational risks associated with the ITER steady-state operations.

In this note we discuss some aspects of the frame formulation of conformal higher spins in three dimensions. We give some exact formulae for the coupled spin two - spin three part of the full higher spin theory and propose a star product Lagrangian for all spins from two and up. Since there is no consistent Lagrangian formulation based on the Poisson bracket we start the construction from the field equations in this approximation of the star product. The higher spin algebra is then realized in terms of classical variables which leads to certain important simplifications that we take advantage of. The suggested structure of the all-spin Lagrangian given here is, however, obtained using an expansion of the star product beyond the Poisson bracket in terms of multi-commutators and the Lagrangian should be viewed as a starting point for the derivation of the full theory based on a star product. How to do this is explained as well as how to include the coupling to scalar fields. We also comment on the AdS/CFT relation to four dimensions.

Apart from Minkowski, chiral round $AdS_3$ and null-warped $AdS_3$ (or Schrödinger(z=2)) we identify also a more exotic solution recently found in $TMG$ by Ertl, Grumiller and Johansson. We also discuss the spectrum, symmetry breaking pattern and the supermultiplet structure in the various backgrounds and argue that some properties are due to their common origin in a conformal phase. Some of the scalar fields, including all higgsed ones, turn out to satisfy three-dimensional singleton field equations. Finally, we note that topologically gauged ${\mathcal N}=6$ ABJ(M) theories have a similar, but more restricted, set of background solutions.

This is done using the 3-algebra formulation thereby covering all possible gauge groups. We will elaborate upon 1) the fundamental identity and its solutions noting, provided these gauged theories describe stacks of branes, the case of a single brane, 2) the chiral point solution to the field equations (occuring even for a single brane) that breaks the superconformal symmetries down to those of AdS_3 (TMG) supergravity, 3) physical parameters and how they scale in the compactification from 11d to 10d and give rise to matter theories in curved space-times, and finally 4) a more speculative comment on "sequential AdS/CFT". Here we propose that the superconformal symmetry breaking in topologically gauged theories leads to the sequence AdS_4/CFT_3 -> AdS_3/CFT_2 and that the higgsing in the 3d boundary theory is related to a change of foliation in the AdS_4 bulk theory.

We present the higgsing of three-dimensional N=6 superconformal ABJM type theories coupled to conformal supergravity, so called topologically gauged ABJM theory, thus providing a gravitational extension of previous work on the relation between N M2 and N D2-branes. The resulting N=6 supergravity theory appears at a chiral point similar to that of three-dimensional chiral gravity introduced recently by Li, Song and Strominger, but with the opposite sign for the Ricci scalar term in the lagrangian. We identify the supersymmetry in the broken phase as a particular linear combination of the supersymmetry and special conformal supersymmetry in the original topologically gauged ABJM theory. We also discuss the higgsing procedure in detail paying special attention to the role played by the U(1) factors in the original ABJM model and the U(1) introduced in the topological gauging.

Various quantum corrections break this continuous isometry to a discrete subgroup. Focussing on the case where the intermediate Jacobian of the Calabi-Yau admits complex multiplication by the ring of quadratic imaginary integers O_d, we argue that the remaining quantum duality group is an arithmetic Picard modular group PU(2,1;O_d). Based on this proposal we construct an Eisenstein series invariant under this duality group and study its non-Abelian Fourier expansion. This allows the prediction of non-perturbative effects, notably the contribution of D2- and NS5-brane instantons. The present work extends our previous analysis in 0909.4299 which was restricted to the special case of the Gaussian integers O_1=Z[i].

The hypermultiplet moduli space in Type IIA string theory compactified on a rigid Calabi-Yau threefold X, corresponding to the "universal hypermultiplet", is described at tree-level by the symmetric space SU(2,1)/(SU(2) x U(1)). To determine the quantum corrections to this metric, we posit that a discrete subgroup of the continuous tree-level isometry group SU(2,1), namely the Picard modular group SU(2,1;Z[i]), must remain unbroken in the exact metric -- including all perturbative and non perturbative quantum corrections. This assumption is expected to be valid when X admits complex multiplication by Z[i]. Based on this hypothesis, we construct an SU(2,1;Z[i])-invariant, non-holomorphic Eisenstein series, and tentatively propose that this Eisenstein series provides the exact contact potential on the twistor space over the universal hypermultiplet moduli space. We analyze its non-Abelian Fourier expansion, and show that the Abelian and non-Abelian Fourier coefficients take the required form for instanton corrections due to Euclidean D2-branes wrap** special Lagrangian submanifolds, and to Euclidean NS5-branes wrap** the entire Calabi-Yau threefold, respectively. While this tentative proposal fails to reproduce the correct one-loop correction, the consistency of the Fourier expansion with physics expectations provides strong support for the utility of the Picard modular group in constraining the quantum moduli space.

In a first step part of the coupled Lagrangian for this topologically gauged ABJM theory is derived by demanding that all terms of third and second order in covariant derivatives cancel in the supersymmtry variation of the Lagrangian. To achieve this the transformation rules of the two separate sectors must be augmented by new terms. In a second step we analyze all terms in $δL$ that are of first order in covariant derivatives. The cancelation of these terms require additional terms in the transformation rules as well as a number of new terms in the Lagrangian. As a final step we check that all remaining terms in $δL$ which are bilinear in fermions cancel which means that the presented Lagrangian and transformation rules constitute the complete answer. In particular we find in the last step new terms in the scalar potential containing either one or no structure constant. The non-derivative higher fermion terms in $δL$ that have not yet been completely analyzed are briefly discussed.

Writing the four-index structure constants in an appropriate form, the Chern-Simons part of the action immediately suggests a connection to such triple systems. In contrast to the previously considered three-algebras, the additional structure of a generalized Jordan triple system is associated to a graded Lie algebra, which corresponds to an extension of the gauge group. In this note we show that the whole theory with six manifest supersymmetries can be naturally expressed in terms of such a graded Lie algebra. By relaxing the requirement of a Lagrangian formulation we can explore the possibility of having structure constants $f^{ABC}{}_D$ satisfying the fundamental identity but which are not totally antisymmetric. We exemplify this discussion by making use of an explicit choice of a non-antisymmetric $f^{ABC}{}_D$ constructed from the Lie algebra structure constants $f^{ab}{}_c$ of an arbitrary gauge group. Although this choice of $f^{ABC}{}_D$ does not admit an obvious Lagrangian description, it does reproduce the correct SYM theory for a stack of $N$ D2-branes to leading order in $g_{YM}^{-1}$ upon reduction and, moreover, it sheds new light on the centre of mass coordinates for multiple M2-branes.

Supersymmetry closes on-shell in such theories, and the fields in the cohomology automatically satisfy the equations of motion. In this paper, we investigate the corresponding structure in a model with off-shell supersymmetry, N=1 super-Yang-Mills theory in D=6. Here, fields and antifields are obtained as cohomologies in different complexes with respect to the BRST operator Q. It turns out to be natural to enlarge the pure spinor space with additional bosonic variables, subject to some constraints generalising the pure spinor condition, in order to accommodate the different supermultiplets in the same generalised pure spinor wave-function. We construct another BRST operator, s, acting in the cohomology of Q, whose cohomology implies the equations of motion. We comment on the possible use of similar approaches in other models.

Our goal is to investigate the resulting action from the point of view of the "U-duality" symmetry SL(n+1,R) which is present in the tree-level Lagrangian when D-n=3. The analysis builds upon and extends the investigation of the paper [arXiv:0706.1183], by computing in detail the full structure of the compactified Gauss-Bonnet term, including the contribution from the dilaton exponents. We analyze these exponents using the representation theory of the Lie algebra sl(n+1,R) and determine which representation seems to be the relevant one for quadratic curvature corrections. By interpreting the result of the compactification as a leading term in a large volume expansion of an SL(n+1,Z)-invariant action, we conclude that the overall exponential dilaton factor should not be included in the representation structure. As a consequence, all dilaton exponents correspond to weights of sl(n+1,R), which, nevertheless, remain on the positive side of the root lattice.

We formulate a theory of topological membranes on manifolds with G_2 holonomy. The BRST charges of the theories are the superspace Killing vectors (the generators of global supersymmetry) on the background with reduced holonomy G_2. In the absence of spinning formulations of supermembranes, the starting point is an N=2 target space supersymmetric membrane in seven euclidean dimensions. The reduction of the holonomy group implies a twisting of the rotations in the tangent bundle of the branes with ``R-symmetry'' rotations in the normal bundle, in contrast to the ordinary spinning formulation of topological strings, where twisting is performed with internal U(1) currents of the N=(2,2) superconformal algebra. The double dimensional reduction on a circle of the topological membrane gives the strings of the topological A-model (a by-product of this reduction is a Green-Schwarz formulation of topological strings). We conclude that the action is BRST-exact modulo topological terms and fermionic equations of motion. We discuss the role of topological membranes in topological M-theory and the relation of our work to recent work by Hitchin and by Dijkgraaf et al.

In this paper we study eleven-dimensional supergravity in its most general form. This is done by implementing manifest supersymmetry (and Lorentz invariance) through the use of the geometric (torsion and curvature) superspace Bianchi identities. These identities are solved to linear order in a deformation parameter introduced via the dimension zero supertorsion given in its most general form. The theory so obtained is referred to as the deformed theory (to avoid the previously used term "off-shell"). An important by-product of this result is that any higher derivative correction to ordinary supergravity of the same dimension as R^4, but not necessarily containing it, derived e.g. from M-theory, must appear in a form compatible with the equations obtained here. Unfortunately we have not yet much to say about the explicit structure of these corrections in terms of the fields in the massless supermultiplet. Our results are potentially powerful since if the dimension zero torsion could be derived by other means, our reformulation of the Bianchi identities as a number of algebraic relations implies that the full theory would be known to first order in the deformation, including the dynamics. We mention briefly some methods to derive the information needed to obtain explicit answers both in the context of supergravity and ten-dimensional super-Yang-Mills where the situation is better understood. Other relevant aspects like spinorial cohomology, the role of the 3- and 6-form potentials and the connection of these results to M2 and M5 branes are also commented upon.

We solve the relevant equations for the action for a restricted class of supergravity backgrounds. Some comments are made on supersymmetry and lower dimensions.

Spinorial cohomology of abelian d=10 super-Yang-Mills at alpha'^3

Abstract:
We compute the spinorial cohomology of ten-dimensional abelian SYM at order alpha'^3 and we find that it is trivial. Consequently, linear supersymmetry alone excludes the presence of alpha'^3-order corrections. Our result lends support to the conjecture that there may be a unique supersymmetric deformation of ordinary ten-dimensional abelian SYM.

Fields in supersymmetric gauge theories may be seen as elements in a spinorial cohomology. We elaborate on this subject, specialising to maximally supersymmetric theories, where the superspace Bianchi identities, after suitable conventional constraints are imposed, put the theories on shell. In these cases, the spinorial cohomologies describe in a unified manner gauge transformations, fields and possible deformations of the models, e.g. string-related corrections in an alpha' expansion. Explicit cohomologies are calculated for super-Yang-Mills theory in D=10, for the N=(2,0) tensor multiplet in D=6 and for supergravity in D=11, in the latter case from the point of view of both the super-vielbein and the super-3-form potential. The techniques may shed light on some questions concerning the alpha'-corrected effective theories, and result in better understanding of the role of the 3-form in D=11 supergravity.

We investigate the consequences of generalizing certain well established properties of the open string metric to the conjectured open membrane and open Dp-brane metrics. By imposing deformation independence on these metrics their functional dependence on the background fields can be determined including the notorious conformal factor. In analogy with the non-commutativity parameter $Θ^{μν}$ in the string case, we also obtain `generalized' theta parameters which are rank q+1 antisymmetric tensors (polyvectors) for open Dq-branes and rank 3 for the open membrane case. The expressions we obtain for the open membrane quantities are expected to be valid for general background field configurations, while the open D-brane quantities are only valid for one parameter deformations. By reducing the open membrane data to five dimensions, we show that they, modulo a subtlety with implications for the relation between OM-theory and NCYM, correctly generate the open string and open D2-data.

Using superspace techniques, the complete and most general action of D=10 super-Yang--Mills theory is constructed at the alpha'^2 level. No other approximations, e.g., kee** only a subset of the allowed derivative terms, are used. The Lorentz structure of the alpha'^2 corrections is completely determined, while (depending on the gauge group) there is some freedom in the adjoint structure, which is given by a totally symmetric four-index tensor. We examine the second, non-linearly realised supersymmetry that may be present when the gauge group has a U(1) factor, and find that the constraints from linear and non-linear supersymmetry to a large extent coincide. However, the additional restrictions on the adjoint structure of the order alpha'^2 interactions following from the requirement of non-linear supersymmetry do not completely specify the symmetrised trace prescription.

We solve the superspace Bianchi identities for ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory without imposing any kind of constraints apart from the standard conventional one. In this way we obtain a set of algebraic conditions on certain fields which in the on-shell theory are constructed as composite ones out of the physical fields. These conditions must hence be satisfied by any kind of theory in ten dimensions invariant under supersymmetry and some, abelian or non-abelian, gauge symmetry. Deformations of the ordinary SYM theory (as well as the fields) are identified as elements of a certain spinorial cohomology, giving control over field redefinitions and the distinction between physically relevant higher-order corrections and those removable by field redefinitions. The conditions derived severely constrain theories involving F^2-level terms plus higher-order corrections, as for instance those derived from open strings as effective gauge theories on D-branes.

We examine noncommutative Yang-Mills and open string theories using magnetically and electrically deformed supergravity duals. The duals are near horizon regions of Dp-brane bound state solutions which are obtained by using O(p+1,p+1) transformations of Dp-branes. The action of the T-duality group implies that the noncommutativity parameter is constant along holographic RG-flows. The moduli of the noncommutative theory, i.e., the open string metric and coupling constant, as well as the zero-force condition are shown to be invariant under the O(p+1,p+1) transformation, i.e., deformation independent. We find sufficient conditions, including zero force and constant dilaton in the ISO(3,1)-invariant D3 brane solution, for exact S-duality between noncommutative Yang-Mills and open string theories. These results are used to construct noncommutative field and string theories with N=1 supersymmetry from the T^(1,1) and Pilch-Warner solutions. The latter has a non-trivial zero-force condition due to the war**.

In this paper, the low-energy effective dynamics of M-theory, eleven-dimensional supergravity, is taken off-shell in a manifestly supersymmetric formulation. We show that a previously proposed relaxation of the superspace torsion constraints does indeed accommodate a current supermultiplet which lifts the equations of motion corresponding to the ordinary second order derivative supergravity lagrangian. Whether the auxiliary fields obtained this way can be used to construct an off-shell lagrangian is not yet known. We comment on the relation and application of this completely general formalism to higher-derivative (R^4) corrections. Some details of the calculation are saved for a later publication.

A superspace approach to branes and supergravity
Authors:

Abstract:
Recent developments in string and M theory rely heavily on supersymmetry suggesting that a revival of superspace techniques in ten and eleven dimensions may be advantageous. Here we discuss three topics of current interest where superspace is already playing an important role and where an improved understanding of superspace might provide additional insight into the issues involved.
