Abstract:
We propose discretisation of a regularised combined field integral equation (regularised CFIE) only with the Rao-Wilton-Glisson (RWG) basis function. The CFIE is a formulation of integral equations, which avoids the so-called ficticious frequencies of integral equations. The most typical CFIE, which is a linear combination of the electric field integral equation (EFIE) and magnetic field integral…

We propose discretisation of a regularised combined field integral equation (regularised CFIE) only with the Rao-Wilton-Glisson (RWG) basis function. The CFIE is a formulation of integral equations, which avoids the so-called ficticious frequencies of integral equations. The most typical CFIE, which is a linear combination of the electric field integral equation (EFIE) and magnetic field integral equation (MFIE), is known to be ill-conditioned and requires many iterations when solved with iteration methods such as the generalised minimum residual (GMRES) method. The regularised CFIE is another formulation of the CFIE to solve this problem by applying a regularising operator to the part of the EFIE. In several previous studies the regularising operator is determined based on the Calderon preconditioning. This regularising operator however takes much more computatonal time than the standard CFIE since discretising the EFIE with the Calderon preconditioner requires the dual basis function. In this article we propose a formulation of the regularised CFIE, which can be discretised with the Galerkin method without the dual basis function.

We propose a novel characteristic basis function method for analyzing the scattering by dielectric objects based on the Poggio-Miller-Chang-Harrington-Wu-Tsai formulation. In the proposed method, the electric and magnetic currents are orthogonalized with the help of the singular value decomposition, and are used as dual basis functions in a way similar to the RWG and BC basis functions. We show that the use of the Calderón multiplicative precondtioner together with the proposed method can prevent from the poor convergence of the solution of the matrix equation in problems involving dielectrics. We considered three different shapes of dielectric scatterers for the purpose of validation. The numerical results agreed well with those obtained by the conventional method of moments and the proposed method was faster than the conventional method. These results indicate that the proposed method is effective for scattering analysis of the dielectrics.

This study considers the stability of time domain BIEMs for the wave equation in 2D. We show that the stability of time domain BIEMs is reduced to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem related to frequency domain integral equations. We propose to solve this non-linear eigenvalue problem numerically with the Sakurai-Sugiura method. After validating this approach numerically in the exterior Dirichlet problem, we proceed to transmission problems in which we find that some time domain counterparts of "resonance-free" integral equations in frequency domain lead to instability. We finally show how to reformulate these equations to obtain stable numerical schemes.

Resonance frequencies are complex eigenvalues at which the homogeneous transmission problems have non-trivial solutions. These frequencies are of interest because they affect the behavior of the solutions even when the frequency is real. The resonance frequencies are related to problems for infinite domains which can be solved efficiently with the Boundary Integral Equation Method (BIEM). We thus consider a numerical method of determining resonance frequencies with fast BIEM and the Sakurai-Sugiura projection Method (SSM). However, BIEM may have fictitious eigenvalues even when one uses Müller or PMCHWT formulations which are known to be resonance free when the frequency is real valued.
In this paper, we propose new BIEs for transmission problems with which one can distinguish true and fictitious eigenvalues easily. Specifically, we consider waveguide problems for the Helmholtz equation in 2D and standard scattering problems for Maxwell's equations in 3D. We verify numerically that the proposed BIEs can separate the fictitious eigenvalues from the true ones in these problems. We show that the obtained true complex eigenvalues are related to the behavior of the solution significantly. We also show that the fictitious eigenvalues may affect the accuracy of BIE solutions in standard boundary value problems even when the frequency is real.

A discretisation method with the $H_{\rm div}$ inner product for the electric field integral equation~(EFIE) is proposed. The EFIE with the conventional Galerkin discretisation shows bad accuracy for problems with a small frequency, a problem known as the low-frequency breakdown. The discretisation method proposed in this paper utilises the $H_{\rm div}$ scalar product with a scalar coefficient for the Galerkin discretisation and overcomes the low-frequency problem with an appropriately chosen coefficient. As regards the preconditioning, we find that a naive use of the widely-used Calderon preconditioning is not efficient for reducing the computational time with the new discretisation. We therefore propose a new preconditioning which can accelerate the computation successfully. The efficiency of the proposed discretisation and preconditioning is verified through some numerical examples.
