A great deal of interest is directed nowadays towards the development of innovative technologies in the field of quantum information and quantum computing, with emphasis on obtaining reliable qubits as building blocks. The realization of highly stable, controllable and accessible hole spin qubits is strongly dependent on the quality of the materials hosting them. Ultra-clean germanium/silicon-germanium heterostructures have been predicted and proven to be promising candidates and due to their large scalability potential, they are opening the door towards the development of realistic and reliable solid state, all-electric, silicon-based quantum computers. In order to obtain ultra-clean germanium/silicon-germanium heterostructures in a reverse grading approach, the understanding and control over the growth of Ge virtual substrates and thin films is key. Here, we present a detailed study on the growth kinetics, morphology, and crystal quality of Ge thin films grown via chemical vapor deposition by investigating the effects of growth temperature, partial pressure of the precursor gas and the use of Ar or H2 atmosphere. The presence of carrier gases catalyzes the deposition rate and induces a smoothening on the surfaces of films grown at low temperatures. We investigated the surface roughness and threading dislocation density as a function of deposition temperature, partial pressure and gas mixture. Ge thin films deposited by diluting GeH4 in Ar or H2 were employed as virtual substrates for the growth of full Ge/SiGe QW heterostructures. Their defect density was analyzed and their electric transport properties were characterized via Hall measurements. Similar results were obtained for both carrier gases used.

For each indifference graph, there is an associated regular semisimple Hessenberg variety, whose cohomology recovers the chromatic symmetric function of the graph. The decomposition theorem applied to the forgetful map from the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety to the projective space describes the cohomology of the Hessenberg variety as a sum of smaller pieces. We give a combinatorial description of the Frobenius character of each piece. This provides a generalization of the symmetric functions attached to Stanley's local h-polynomials of the permutahedral variety to any Hessenberg variety.
As a consequence, we can prove that the coefficient of $e_λ$, where $λ$ is any partition of length 2, in the e-expansion of the chromatic symmetric function of any indifference graph is non-negative.

The characters of Kazhdan--Lusztig elements of the Hecke algebra over $S_n$ (and in particular, the chromatic symmetric function of indifference graphs) are completely encoded in the (intersection) cohomology of certain subvarieties of the flag variety. Considering the forgetful map to some partial flag variety, the decomposition theorem tells us that this cohomology splits as a sum of intersection cohomology groups with coefficients in some local systems of subvarieties of the partial flag variety. We prove that these local systems correspond to representations of subgroups of $S_n$. An explicit characterization of such representations would provide a recursive formula for the computation of such characters/chromatic symmetric functions, which could settle Haiman's conjecture about the positivity of the monomial characters of Kazhdan--Lusztig elements and Stanley--Stembridge conjecture about $e$-positivity of chromatic symmetric function of indifference graphs. We also find a connection between the character of certain homology groups of subvarieties of the partial flag varieties and the Grojnowski--Haiman hybrid basis of the Hecke algebra.

We revisit Haiman's conjecture on the relations between characters of Kazdhan-Lusztig basis elements of the Hecke algebra over the symmetric group. The conjecture asserts that, for purposes of character evaluation, any Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element is reducible to a sum of the simplest possible ones (those associated to so-called codominant permutations). When the basis element is associated to a smooth permutation, we are able to give a geometric proof of this conjecture. On the other hand, if the permutation is singular, we provide a counterexample.

To any element of a connected, simply connected, semisimple complex algebraic group G and a choice of an element of the corresponding Weyl group there is an associated Lusztig variety. When the element of G is regular semisimple, the corresponding variety carries an action of the Weyl group on its (equivariant) intersection cohomology. From this action, we recover the induced characters of an element of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In type A, we prove a more precise statement: that the Frobenius character of this action is precisely the symmetric function given by the characters of a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element. The main idea is to find celular decompositions of desingularizations of these varieties and apply the Brosnan-Chow palindromicity criterion for determining when the local invariant cycle map is an isomorphism.
This recovers some results of Lusztig about character sheaves and gives a generalization of the Brosnan-Chow solution to the Sharesian-Wachs conjecture to non-codominant permutations, where singularities are involved. We also review the connections between Immanants, Hecke algebras, and Chromatic quasisymmetric functions of indifference graphs.

Majorana bound states (MBS) and Andreev bound states (ABS) in realistic Majorana nanowires setups have similar experimental signatures which make them hard to distinguishing one from the other. Here, we characterize the continuous Majorana/Andreev crossover interpolating between fully-separated, partially-separated, and fully-overlap** Majorana modes, in terms of global and local topological invariants, fermion parity, quasiparticle densities, Majorana pseudospin and spin polarizations, density overlaps and transition probabilities between opposite Majorana components. We found that in inhomogeneous wires, the transition between fully-overlap** trivial ABS and nontrivial MBS does not necessarily mandate the closing of the bulk gap of quasiparticle excitations, but a simple parity crossing of partially-separated Majorana modes (ps-MM) from trivial to nontrivial regimes. We demonstrate that fully-separated and fully-overlap** Majorana modes correspond to the two limiting cases at the opposite sides of a continuous crossover: the only distinction between the two can be obtained by estimating the degree of separations of the Majorana components. This result does not contradict the bulk-edge correspondence: Indeed, the field inhomogeneities driving the Majorana/Andreev crossover have a length scale comparable with the nanowire length, and therefore correspond to a nonlocal perturbation which breaks the topological protection of the MBS.

Electron-doped and hole-doped superconducting cuprates exhibit a symmetric phase diagram as a function of do**. This symmetry is however only approximate. Indeed, electron-doped cuprates become superconductors only after a specific annealing process: This annealing affects the oxygen content by only a tiny amount, but has a dramatic impact on the electronic properties of the sample. Here we report the occurrence of superconductivity in oxygen-deficient Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ thin films grown in an oxygen-free environment, after annealing in pure argon flow. As verified by x-ray diffraction, annealing induces an increase of the interlayer distance between CuO$_2$ planes in the crystal structure. Since this distance is correlated to the concentration of oxygens in apical positions, and since oxygen content cannot substantially increase during annealing, our experiments indicate that the superconducting phase transition has to be ascribed to a migration of oxygen ions to apical positions during annealing. Moreover, as we confirm via first-principles density functional theory calculations, the changes in the structural and transport properties of the films can be theoretically described by a specific redistribution of the existing oxygen ions at apical positions with respect to CuO$_2$ planes, which remodulates the electronic band structure and suppresses the antiferromagnetic order, allowing the emergence of hole superconductivity.

We find that the resistance reaches a residual value at Tc=4.2 K and its temperature dependence cannot be fitted only with a suitable Bloch-Gruneisen formula in the whole temperature range, even though we are able to calculate a well defined transport Debye temperature. The observed temperature dependent resistivity seems to suggest a non phonon-mediated superconducting pairing, supporting a magnetic fluctuation mechanism as the likely glue for the superconducting coupling.

Vortex dynamics is strongly connected with the mechanisms responsible for the photon detection of superconducting devices. Indeed, the local suppression of superconductivity by photon absorption may trigger vortex nucleation and motion effects, which can make the superconducting state unstable. In addition, scaling down the thickness of the superconducting films and/or the width of the bridge geometry can strongly influence the transport properties of superconducting films, e.g. affecting its critical current as well as its switching current into the normal state. Understanding such instability can boost the performances of those superconducting devices based on nanowire geometries. We present an experimental study on the resistive switching in NbN and NbTiN ultra-thin films with a thickness of few nanometers. Despite both films were patterned with the same microbridge geometry, the two superconducting materials show different behaviors at very low applied magnetic fields. A comparison with other low temperature superconducting materials outlines the influence of geometry effects on the superconducting transport properties of these materials particularly useful for devices applications.

In this paper we explore the effects of 3.5 MeV proton irradiation on Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF2. In particular, we carry out a systematic experimental investigation with different irradiation fluences up to 7.30x10^16 cm^-2 and different proton implantation depths, in order to clarify whether and to what extent the critical current is enhanced or suppressed, what are the effects of irradiation on the critical temperature, the resistivity and the critical magnetic fields, and finally what is the role played by the substrate in this context. We find that the effect of irradiation on superconducting properties is generally small as compared to the case of other iron-based superconductors. Such effect is more evident on the critical current density Jc, while it is minor on the transition temperature Tc, on the normal state resistivity and on the upper critical field Hc2 up to the highest fluences explored in this work. In addition, our analysis shows that when protons implant in the substrate far from the superconducting film, the critical current can be enhanced up to 50% of the pristine value at 7 T and 12 K, while there is no appreciable effect on critical temperature and critical fields together with a slight decrease in resistivity. On the contrary, when the implantation layer is closer to the film-substrate interface, both critical current and temperature show a decrease accompanied by an enhancement of the resistivity and the lattice strain. This result evidences that possible modifications induced by irradiation in the substrate may affect the superconducting properties of the film via lattice strain. The robustness of the Fe(Se,Te) system to irradiation induced damage makes it a promising compound for the fabrication of magnets in high-energy accelerators.

Anisotropy effects on flux pinning and flux flow are strongly effective in cuprate as well as iron-based superconductors due to their intrinsically layered crystallographic structure. However $\textrm{Fe(Se,Te)}$ thin films grown on $\textrm{CaF}_2$ substrate result less anisotropic with respect to all the other iron based superconductors. We present the first study on the angular dependence of the flux flow instability, which occurs in the flux flow regime as a current driven transition to the normal state at the instability point ($I^*$,$V^*$) in the current-voltage characteristics. The voltage jumps are systematically investigated as a function of the temperature, the external magnetic field, and the angle between the field and the $\textrm{Fe(Se,Te)}$ film. The scaling procedure based on the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau approach is successfully applied to the observed angular dependence of the critical voltage $V^*$. Anyway, we find out that $\textrm{Fe(Se,Te)}$ represents the case study of a layered material characterized by a weak anisotropy of its static superconducting properties, but with an increased anisotropy in its vortex dynamics due to the predominant perpendicular component of the external applied magnetic field. Indeed, $I^*$ shows less sensitivity to angle variations, thus being promising for high field applications.

The stability against quench is one of the main issue to be pursued in a superconducting material which should be able to perform at very high levels of current densities. Here we focus on the connection between the critical current $I_c$ and the quenching current $I^*$ associated to the so-called flux-flow instability phenomenon, which sets in as an abrupt transition from the flux flow state to the normal state. To this purpose, we analyze several current-voltage characteristics of three types of iron-based thin films, acquired at different temperature and applied magnetic field values. For these samples, we discuss the impact of a possible coexistence of intrinsic electronic mechanisms and extrinsic thermal effects on the quenching current dependence upon the applied magnetic field. The differences between the quenching current and the critical current are reported also in the case of predominant intrinsic mechanisms. Carrying out a comparison with high-temperature cuprate superconductors, we suggest which material can be the best trade-off between maximum operating temperature, higher upper critical field and stability under high current bias.

The latter, sharing the same Ce content, have been fabricated and annealed ad-hoc in order to differ only for the degree of disorder, mainly related to oxygen content and location, and, consequently, for the temperature dependence of the resistance: two of them present a minimum in the resistance and behave as a superconductor and as a metal, respectively, the third behaves as an insulator. The systematic coherence between the resistance and the relaxation parameters behaviors in temperature for all three samples is absolutely remarkable and shows that pump-probe measurements can be extremely sensitive to disorder as it drives the emergence of new excitations and of the related relaxation channels as in this paradigmatic case.

We introduce the notion of level-$δ$ limit linear series, which describe limits of linear series along families of smooth curves degenerating to a singular curve $X$. We treat here only the simplest case where $X$ is the union of two smooth components meeting transversely at a point $P$. The integer $δ$ stands for the singularity degree of the total space of the degeneration at $P$. If the total space is regular, we get level-1 limit linear series, which are precisely those introduced by Osserman in 2006. We construct a projective moduli space $G^r_{d,δ}(X)$ parameterizing level-$δ$ limit linear series of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on $X$, and show that it is a new compactification, for each $δ$, of the moduli space of Osserman exact limit linear series, an open subscheme $G^{r,*}_{d,1}(X)$ of the space $G^r_{d,1}(X)$ already constructed by Osserman. Finally, we generalize work by Esteves and Osserman by associating to each exact level-$δ$ limit linear series $\mathfrak g$ on $X$ a closed subscheme $\mathbb P(\mathfrak g)\subseteq X^{(d)}$ of the $d$th symmetric product of $X$, and showing that $\mathbb P(\mathfrak g)$ is the limit of the spaces of divisors associated to linear series on smooth curves degenerating to $\mathfrak g$ on $X$, if such degenerations exist. In particular, we describe completely limits of divisors along degenerations to such a curve $X$.

The as-grown samples show different dependence of the in-plane resistivity at low temperature, when they are grown in pure argon atmosphere or in oxygen. Moreover, an unusual behaviour is also found when transport takes place in the presence of an external magnetic field. It is commonly accepted that the higher anisotropic properties of NCCO crystalline cell with respect to the hole doped YBCO and LSCO and the electric conduction mainly confined in the CuO$_2$ plane, strongly support the two-dimensional (2D) character of the current transport in this system. Results on the temperature dependence of the resistance, as well as on the magnetoresistance and the Hall coefficient, obtained on epitaxial NCCO thin films in the over-doped region ($x\ge0.15$) of the phase diagram are presented and discussed.

We study the instability of the superconducting state in a mesoscopic geometry for the low pinning material Mo$_3$Ge characterized by a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter. We observe that in the current driven switching to the normal state from a nonlinear region of the Abrikosov flux flow, the mean critical vortex velocity reaches a limiting maximum velocity as a function of the applied magnetic field. Based on time dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations we argue that the observed behavior is due to the high velocity vortex dynamics confined on a mesoscopic scale. We build up a general phase diagram which includes all possible dynamic configurations of Abrikosov lattice in a mesoscopic superconductor.

We study the arc space of the Grassmannian from the point of view of the singularities of Schubert varieties. Our main tool is a decomposition of the arc space of the Grassmannian that resembles the Schubert cell decomposition of the Grassmannian itself. Just as the combinatorics of Schubert cells is controlled by partitions, the combinatorics in the arc space is controlled by plane partitions (sometimes also called 3d partitions). A combination of a geometric analysis of the pieces in the decomposition and a combinatorial analysis of plane partitions leads to invariants of the singularities. As an application we reduce the computation of log canonical thresholds of pairs involving Schubert varieties to an easy linear programming problem. We also study the Nash problem for Schubert varieties, showing that the Nash map is always bijective in this case.

We report the first experimental observation of the quenching of the superconducting state in current-voltage characteristics of an iron-based superconductor, namely, in FeSeTe thin films. Based on available theoretical models, our analysis suggests the presence of an intrinsic flux-flow electronic instability along with non-negligible extrinsic thermal effects. The coexistence and competition of these two mechanisms classify the observed instability as halfway between those of low-temperature and of high-temperature superconductors, where thermal effects are respectively largely negligible or predominant.

We introduce a parafermionic version of the Jaynes Cummings Hamiltonian, by coupling $k$ Fock parafermions (nilpotent of order $F$) to a 1D harmonic oscillator, representing the interaction with a single mode of the electromagnetic field. We argue that for $k=1$ and $F\leq 3$ there is no difference between Fock parafermions and quantum spins $s=\frac{F-1}{2}$. We also derive a semiclassical approximation of the canonical partition function of the model by assuming $\hbar$ to be small in the regime of large enough total number of excitations $n$, where the dimension of the Hilbert space of the problem becomes constant as a function of $n$. We observe in this case an interesting behaviour of the average of the bosonic number operator showing a single crossover between regimes with different integer values of this observable. These features persist when we generalize the parafermionic Hamiltonian by deforming the bosonic oscillator with a generic function $Φ(x)$; the $q-$deformed bosonic oscillator corresponds to a specific choice of the deformation function $Φ$. In this particular case, we observe at most $k(F-1)$ crossovers in the behavior of the mean bosonic number operator, suggesting a phenomenology of superradiance similar to the $k-$atoms Jaynes Cummings model.

The kinematic observables studied comprise the transverse energy and pseudorapidity of the photon and the jet, the azimuthal difference between them, the fraction of proton energy taking part in the interaction, and the difference between the pseudorapidities of the photon and the jet. The production of beauty and charm quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared 5 < Q^2 < 1000 GeV^2 using an integrated luminosity of 354 pb^{-1}. The beauty and charm content in events with at least one jet have been extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of Q^2, Bjorken x, jet transverse energy and pseudorapidity were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The beauty and charm contributions to the proton structure functions were extracted from the double-differential cross section as a function of x and Q^2. The running beauty-quark mass, m_b at the scale m_b, was determined from a QCD fit at next-to-leading order to HERA data for the first time and found to be 4.07 \pm 0.14 (fit} ^{+0.01}_{-0.07} (mod.) ^{+0.05}_{-0.00} (param.) ^{+0.08}_{-0.05} (theo) GeV.

The events were required to have a virtuality of the incoming photon, $Q^2$, of less than 1 GeV$^2$. The dependence on $\sqrt{s}$ was studied by normalising to the high-statistics measurement at $\sqrt{s} =318$ GeV. This led to the cancellation of a number of systematic effects both in data and theory. Predictions from next-to-leading-order QCD describe the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the data well.

An improved reconstruction method and greatly increased amount of data allows a finer binning in the high-x region of the neutral current cross section and leads to a measurement with much improved precision compared to a similar earlier analysis. The measurements are compared to Standard Model expectations based on a variety of recent parton distribution functions.

The Loewner equation, in its stochastic incarnation introduced by Schramm, is an insightful method for the description of critical random curves and interfaces in two-dimensional statistical mechanics. Two features are crucial, namely conformal invariance and a conformal version of the Markov property. Extensions of the equation have been explored in various directions, in order to expand the reach of such a powerful method. We propose a new generalization based on q-calculus, a concept rooted in quantum geometry and non-extensive thermodynamics; the main motivation is the explicit breaking of the Markov property, while retaining scale invariance in the stochastic version. We focus on the deterministic equation and give some exact solutions; the formalism naturally gives rise to multiple mutually-intersecting curves. A general method of simulation is constructed - which can be easily extended to other q-deformed equations - and is applied to both the deterministic and the stochastic realms. The way the $q\neq 1$ picture converges to the classical one is explored as well.

The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496 pb-1 of integrated luminosity. The Z0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on eta_max < 3.0, where eta_max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep -> eZ0p* was measured to be sigma(ep -> eZ0p*) = 0.13 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. The structure functions F3 and F3(gamma)Z were determined by combining the e+p results presented in this paper with previously published e-p neutral current results. The asymmetry parameter A+ is used to demonstrate the parity violation predicted in electroweak interactions. The measurements are well described by the predictions of the Standard Model.

Jets were identified using the kT, anti-kT or SIScone jet algorithms in the laboratory frame. Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, etajet, for jets with ETjet > 17 GeV and -1 < etajet < 2.5. In addition, measurements of double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections are presented as functions of ETjet in different regions of etajet. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements, except for jets with low ETjet and high etajet. The influence of non-perturbative effects not related to hadronisation was studied. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(alphas2) terms. Values of alphas(Mz) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of alphas(Mz) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is alphas(Mz) = 0.1206 +0.0023 -0.0022 (exp.) +0.0042 -0.0035 (th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision.

The in-plane excess conductivity has been measured in high quality single crystals, with a sharp superconducting transition at Tc=35.5K and a transition width less than 0.3K. The data have been also acquired in external magnetic field up to 14T. We show that the fluctuation conductivity data in zero field and for temperatures close to Tc, can be explained within a three-dimensional Lawrence-Doniach theory, with a negligible Maki-Thompson contribution. In the presence of the magnetic field, it is shown that paraconductivity obeys the three-dimensional Ullah-Dorsey scaling law, above 2T and for H||c. The estimated upper critical field and the coherence length nicely agree with the available experimental data.

Abstract:
The exclusive electroproduction of two pions in the mass range 0.4 < Mππ < 2.5 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. The analysis was carried out in the kinematic range of 2 < Q2 < 80 GeV2, 32 < W < 180 GeV and |t| < 0.6 GeV2, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and t is the squared four-momentum t…

The exclusive electroproduction of two pions in the mass range 0.4 < Mππ < 2.5 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. The analysis was carried out in the kinematic range of 2 < Q2 < 80 GeV2, 32 < W < 180 GeV and |t| < 0.6 GeV2, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The two-pion invariant-mass distribution is interpreted in terms of the pion electromagnetic form factor, |F(Mππ)|, assuming that the studied mass range includes the contributions of the ρ, ρ' and ρ" vector-meson states. The masses and widths of the resonances were obtained and the Q2 dependence of the cross-section ratios σ(ρ' \rightarrow ππ)/σ(ρ) and σ(ρ" \rightarrow ππ)/σ(ρ) was extracted. The pion form factor obtained in the present analysis is compared to that obtained in e+e- \rightarrow π+π-.

A search for single-top production, $ep \rightarrow etX$, has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $0.37\fbi$. No evidence for top production was found, consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model. Limits were computed for single-top production via flavour changing neutral current transitions. The result was combined with a previous ZEUS result yielding a total luminosity of 0.50fb-1. A 95% credibility level upper limit of 0.13 pb was obtained for the cross section at the centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=315\gev$.

Scaled momentum distributions for the strange hadrons K0s and Lambda/bar Lambda were measured in deep inelastic ep scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 330 pb-1. The evolution of these distributions with the photon virtuality, Q2, was studied in the kinematic region 10<Q2<40000 GeV2 and 0.001<x<0.75, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. Clear scaling violations are observed. Predictions based on different approaches to fragmentation were compared to the measurements. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo calculations interfaced to the Lund string fragmentation model describe the data reasonably well in the whole range measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations based on fragmentation functions, FFs, extracted from e+e- data alone, fail to describe the measurements. The calculations based on FFs extracted from a global analysis including e+e-, ep and pp data give an improved description. The measurements presented in this paper have the potential to further constrain the FFs of quarks, anti-quarks and gluons yielding K0s and Lambda/bar Lambda strange hadrons.

We study the quasiparticle energy relaxation processes in superconducting Nb films of different thicknesses corresponding to different electron mean free paths in a state far from equilibrium, that is the highly dissipative flux-flow state driven up to the instability point. From the measured current-voltage curves we derive the vortex critical velocity $v^{*}$ for several temperatures. From the $v^{*}(T)$ values, the quasiparticle energy relaxation time $τ_ε$ is evaluated within the Larkin-Ovchinnikov model and numerical calculations of the quasiparticle energy relaxation rates are carried out to support the experimental findings. Besides the expected constant behavior of $τ_ε(T)$ for the dirty samples, we observe a strong temperature dependence of the quasiparticle energy relaxation time in the clean samples. This feature is associated with the increasing contribution from the electron-phonon scattering process as the dirty limit is approached from the clean regime.

We measure current-voltage characteristics as function of magnetic field and temperature in Nb strips of different thickness and width. The instability voltage of the flux flow state related to the vortex critical velocity v* is studied and compared with the Larkin-Ovchinnikov theory. Beside the usual power-law dependence v* ~ B^-1/2, in the low field range a new cross-over field, Bcr1, is observed below which v* decreases by further lowering the external magnetic field B. We ascribe this unexpected cross-over to vortex channeling due to a fan-like penetration of the applied magnetic field as confirmed by magneto-optic imaging. The observation of Bcr1 becomes a direct evidence of a general feature in type-II superconducting films at low fields, that is a channel-like vortex motion induced by the inhomogeneous magnetic state caused by the relatively strong pinning.

The fraction of events with beauty quarks in the data was determined using the distribution of the transverse momentum of the muon relative to the jet. The cross section for beauty production was measured in the kinematic range of photon virtuality, Q^2 > 2 Gev^2, and inelasticity, 0.05 < y < 0.7, with the requirement of a muon and a jet. Total and differential cross sections are presented and compared to QCD predictions. The beauty contribution to the structure function F_2 was extracted and is compared to theoretical predictions.

We consider critical dense polymers ${\cal L}_{1,2}$, corresponding to a logarithmic conformal field theory with central charge $c=-2$. An elegant decomposition of the Baxter $Q$ operator is obtained in terms of a finite number of lattice integrals of motion. All local, non local and dual non local involutive charges are introduced directly on the lattice and their continuum limit is found to agree with the expressions predicted by conformal field theory. A highly non trivial operator $Ψ(ν)$ is introduced on the lattice taking values in the Temperley Lieb Algebra. This $Ψ$ function provides a lattice discretization of the analogous function introduced by Bazhanov, Lukyanov and Zamolodchikov. It is also observed how the eigenvalues of the $Q$ operator reproduce the well known spectral determinant for the harmonic oscillator in the continuum scaling limit.
