Chemical reactor network (CRN) modeling is a promising approach for scale-bridging within a model hierarchy covering a huge range of scales from micro to macro in the scope of develo** an innovative metal-fueled circular energy economy. This holds if valid information from CRNs, being models of reduced complexity, can be obtained on a much denser set of operating conditions than available from experiments and elaborated simulation methods like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). An approach for CRN calibration including model error quantification from recent literature is used for develo** a CRN model of a laboratory reactor for flash ironmaking, using data from the literature. By introducing a meta model of a CRN parameter, it has been possible to calibrate a simple CRN model on an extended set of operating conditions with satisfactory results. This way, the employed coupled calibration and uncertainty quantification framework seems promising for the task of scale-bridging in the model hierarchy under investigation. Challenges for the further extension of the present work into that direction are discussed.

Using in an essential way the theory of unitary irreducible representation of covers of the group SO(2,1), these imaginary root subgroups act on the complex Kac-Moody algebra viewed as a Hilbert space. We illustrate our new view on Kac-Moody groups by considering the example of a rank-two hyperbolic algebra that is related to the Fibonacci numbers. We also point out some open issues and new avenues for further research, and briefly discuss the potential relevance of the present results for physics and current attempts at unification.

Flamelet-based methods are extensively used in modeling turbulent hydrocarbon flames. However, these models have yet to be established for (lean) premixed hydrogen flames. While flamelet models exist for laminar thermo-diffusively unstable hydrogen flames, for which consideration of curvature effects has resulted in improved model predictions, it is still unclear whether these models are directly applicable to turbulent hydrogen flames. Therefore, a detailed assessment of stretch effects on thermochemical states in a turbulent lean premixed hydrogen-air slot flame through finite-rate chemistry simulations is conducted. Strain and curvature are examined individually using a composition space model, revealing their distinct influences on thermochemical states. An a-priori analysis confirms that the previously developed tabulated manifolds fall short of capturing all turbulent flame phenomena, necessitating a novel manifold incorporating both strain and curvature variations. These results underscore the significance of these variations in develo** manifold-based combustion models for turbulent lean hydrogen flames.

This scheme makes the definite (and falsifiable) prediction that massive gravitinos are the {\em only} new fermionic degrees of freedom beyond the known three generations of quarks and leptons of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In this note we re-examine one special outlier event reported and subsequently discarded by the MACRO collaboration \cite{MACRO1} in the light of this proposal and point out the possibility of an alternative interpretation of this event supporting the above hypothesis, whose confirmation (or refutation) would, however, require an independent dedicated experimental effort.

We study the quantization of the bosonic sector of supermembrane theory in double dimensional reduction, in order to extract the dependence of the resulting world-sheet action on the string dilaton (which cannot be obtained from a purely kinematic reduction). Our construction relies on a Polyakov-type approach with all six metric components on the world-volume as independent quantum fields, and shows that the correct and unique answer is only obtained if the target-space dimension of the theory is restricted to the critical value ($D=11$ for the supermembrane). As a corollary, our analysis implies that there are no analogs of the non-critical string for (super-)membrane theory.

We consider the Wheeler-DeWitt operator associated with the bosonic part of the Hamiltonian of D=11 supergravity in a formulation with only the spatial components of the three-form and six-form fields, and compare it with the E10 Casimir operator at low levels, to show that these two operators precisely match modulo spatial gradients up to and including gl(10) level two. The uniqueness of the E10 Casimir operator eliminates all ordering ambiguities in the quantum Hamiltonian, at least up to the level considered. Beyond level three the two operators are expected to start to differ from each other, as they do so for the classical expressions. We then consider truncations of the E10 Wheeler-DeWitt operator for various finite-dimensional subgroups of E10 in order to exhibit the automorphic properties of the associated wave functions and to show that physically sensible wave functions generically vanish at the cosmological singularity, thus providing new and more sophisticated examples of DeWitt's proposed mechanism for singularity resolution in quantum gravity. Our construction provides novel perspectives on several unresolved conceptual issues with the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, such as the question of observables in quantum gravity, or the issue of emergent space and time in a purely algebraic framework. We also highlight remaining open questions of the E10 framework.

We reconsider the supermembrane in a Minkowski background and in the light-cone gauge as a one-dimensional gauge theory of area preserving diffeomorphisms (APDs). Kee** the membrane tension $T$ as an independent parameter we show that $T$ is proportional to the square of the gauge coupling $g$ of this gauge theory, such that the small (large) tension limit of the supermembrane corresponds to the weak (strong) coupling limit of the APD gauge theory and its SU$(N)$ matrix model approximation. A perturbative linearization of the supersymmetric theory suitable for a quantum mechanical path-integral treatment can be achieved by formulating a Nicolai map for the matrix model, which we work out explicitly to ${\cal O}(g^4)$. The corresponding formulae remain well-defined in the limit $N{\to}\infty$; this result relies on a cancellation of infinities not present for the bosonic membrane, indicating that the $N{\to}\infty$ limit does not exist for the purely bosonic matrix model. Furthermore we show that the map has improved convergence properties in comparison with the usual perturbative expansions because its Jacobian admits an expansion in $g$ with a non-zero radius of convergence. Possible implications for unsolved issues with the matrix model of M theory are also mentioned.

The involutory subalgebra K(E$_9$) of the affine Kac-Moody algebra E$_9$ was recently shown to admit an infinite sequence of unfaithful representations of ever increasing dimensions arXiv:2102.00870. We revisit these representations and describe their associated ideals in more detail, with particular emphasis on two chiral versions that can be constructed for each such representation. For every such unfaithful representation we show that the action of K(E$_9$) decomposes into a direct sum of two mutually commuting (`chiral' and `anti-chiral') parabolic algebras with Levi subalgebra $\mathfrak{so}(16)_+\,\oplus\,\mathfrak{so}(16)_-$. We also spell out the consistency conditions for uplifting such representations to unfaithful representations of K(E$_{10}$). From these results it is evident that the holonomy groups so far discussed in the literature are mere shadows (in a Platonic sense) of a much larger structure.

This is achieved by means of an exact metric solving Einstein's equations throughout both phases. We show that, thanks to a special enhancement effect producing an effective horizon above the actual event horizon, this process can explain the observed mass values of the earliest giant black holes. Unlike other proposals, it also predicts a lower limit on the mass of supermassive black holes.

We argue that the stable (color singlet) supermassive gravitinos proposed in our previous work can serve as seeds for giant primordial black holes. These seeds are hypothesized to start out as tightly bound states of fractionally charged gravitinos in the radiation dominated era, whose formation is supported by the universally attractive combination of gravitational and electric forces between the gravitinos and anti-gravitinos (reflecting their `almost BPS-like' nature). When lumps of such bound states coalesce and undergo gravitational collapse, the resulting mini-black holes can escape Hawking evaporation if the radiation temperature exceeds the Hawking temperature. Subsequently the black holes evolve according to an exact solution of Einstein's equations, to emerge as macroscopic black holes in the transition to the matter dominated era, with masses on the order of the solar mass or larger. The presence of these seeds at such an early time provides ample time for further accretion of matter and radiation, and would imply the existence of black holes of almost any size in the universe, up to the observed maximum.

Supersymmetric gauge theories are characterized by the existence of a transformation of the bosonic fields (Nicolai map) such that the Jacobi determinant of the transformation equals the product of the Matthews-Salam-Seiler and Faddeev-Popov determinants. This transformation had been worked out to second order in the coupling constant. In this paper, we extend this result (and the framework itself) to third order in the coupling constant. A diagrammatic approach in terms of tree diagrams, aiming to extend this map to arbitrary orders, is outlined. This formalism bypasses entirely the use of anti-commuting variables, as well as issues concerning the (non-)existence of off-shell formulations for these theories. It thus offers a fresh perspective on supersymmetric gauge theories and, in particular, the ubiquitous $\mathcal N{=}\,4$ theory.

This represents the first example of unstable higher Kaluza-Klein modes and provides further evidence for the AdS swampland conjecture, which states that there are no stable non-supersymmetric AdS vacua within string theory. We also find 27 infinitesimal moduli amongst the Kaluza-Klein modes, which hints at the existence of a family of non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua.

As a special application we show that for the maximally extended N=4 theory in four dimensions, and up to order O(g^2), all known results for scalar correlators can be recovered in this way without any use of anti-commuting variables, in terms of a purely bosonic and ghost free functional measure for the gauge fields. This includes in particular the dilatation operator yielding the anomalous dimensions of composite operators. The formalism is thus competitive with more standard perturbative techniques.

In this paper, we take up an old thread of development concerning the characterization of supersymmetric theories without any use of anticommuting variables that goes back to one of the authors' very early work [1]. Our special focus here will be on the formulation of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories, extending previous results beyond $D=4$ dimensions. This perspective is likely to provide new insights into these theories, and in particular the maximally extended $N=4$ theory. As a new result we present a novel derivation of the admissible dimensions for interacting (pure) super-Yang-Mills theories to exist. This article is dedicated to the memory of Peter Freund, amongst many other things an early contributor to supersymmetry, and an author of one of the very first papers on superconformal gauge theories [2]. We argue that the superheavy gravitinos that we had previously proposed as candidates for Dark Matter can offer a possible explanation for the ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) events observed at the Pierre Auger Observatory, via gravitino anti-gravitino annihilation in the `skin' of neutron stars. The large mass and strong interactions of these particles, together with their stability against decays into standard matter are essential for the proposed explanation to work. In particular, it ensues that UHECR events can be understood to originate from neutron stars inside a GKZ horizon of $\sim$ 50 Mpc. The composition of neutron stars near their surface could play a crucial role in explaining the presence of heavy ions in these events. If confirmed, this new mechanism can be taken as evidence for the fundamental ansatz towards unification on which it is based.

The representation theory of involutory (or 'maximal compact') subalgebras of infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras is largely terra incognita, especially with regard to fermionic (double-valued) representations. Nevertheless, certain distinguished such representations feature prominently in proposals of possible symmetries underlying M theory, both at the classical and the quantum level. Here we summarise recent efforts to study spinorial representations systematically, most notably for the case of the hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra $E_{10}$ where spinors of the involutory subalgebra $K(E_{10})$ are expected to play a role in describing algebraically the fermionic sector of $D=11$ supergravity and M theory. Although these results remain very incomplete, they also point towards the beginning of a possible explanation of the fermion structure observed in the Standard Model of Particle Physics.

Following up on our earlier work where we showed how to amend a scheme originally proposed by M. Gell-Mann to identify the 48 spin 1/2 fermions of N=8 supergravity that remain after complete breaking of N=8 supersymmetry with the 3x16 quarks and leptons of the Standard Model, we further generalize the construction to account for the full SU(3)_c x SU(2)_w x U(1)_Y assignments, with an additional family symmetry SU(3)_f. Our proposal relies in an essential way on embedding the SU(8) R-symmetry of N=8 supergravity into the (infinite-dimensional) `maximal compact' subgroup K(E10) of the conjectured maximal duality symmetry E10. As a by-product, it predicts fractionally charged and possibly strongly interacting massive gravitinos. It also indicates how E10 and K(E10) can supersede supersymmetry as a guiding principle for unification.

We construct a compact form of a deformed action with infinite number of higher derivative terms and restored duality symmetry with deformation parameter $λ$. In this paper, we present a comprehensive quantitative analysis of this model, and show that all outstanding issues of particle physics proper can in principle be solved `in one go' within this framework. This includes in particular the stabilization of the electroweak scale, `minimal' leptogenesis and the explanation of Dark Matter, with a small mass and very weakly interacting Majoron as the Dark Matter candidate (for which we propose to use the name `minoron'). The main testable prediction of the model is a new and almost sterile scalar boson that would manifest itself as a narrow resonance in the TeV region. We give a representative range of parameter values consistent with our assumptions and with observation.

In this Letter we argue that the `correct' gauge choice is the one that follows from requiring all terms that would imply a violation of the Wess-Zumino consistency condition to be absent in the counterterm, because otherwise the usual link between the anomaly and the one-loop divergence becomes invalid. Remarkably, the `good' choice of gauge is the one that confirms our previous result that a complete cancellation of conformal anomalies in D=4 can only be achieved for N-extended (Poincaré) supergravities with $N\geq 5$.

We argue that the presence of conformal anomalies in gravitational theories can lead to observable modifications to Einstein's equations via the induced anomalous effective actions, whose non-localities can overwhelm the smallness of the Planck scale. The fact that no such effects have been seen in recent cosmological or gravitational wave observations therefore imposes strong restrictions on the field content of possible extensions of Einstein's theory: all viable theories should have vanishing conformal anomalies. We then show that a complete cancellation of conformal anomalies in D=4 for both the $C^2$ invariant and the Euler (Gauss-Bonnet) invariant can only be achieved for N-extended supergravities with $N \geq 5$, as well as for M theory compactified to four dimensions.

In addition we present their decompositions under the various finite-dimensional subgroups associated with some maximal supergravities in dimensions D<=11, and the projectors for `spin-7/2' which have not been given before. Those representations that have not been derived from supergravity still have to find a role and a proper physical interpretation in the conjectured correspondence between E10 and M-theory. Nevertheless, they provide novel mathematical structures that could shed some light on fundamental questions in supergravity and on the possible role of K(E10) as an `R-symmetry' of M-theory, and perhaps also on the algebra E10 itself.

The new ansaetze provide a substantially simpler method for uplifting d=4 flows compared to the previously available method using the 3-form and 6-form potential ansaetze. The ansatz for the Freund-Rubin term allows us to conjecture a `master formula' for the latter in terms of the scalar potential of d=4 gauged supergravity and its first derivative. We also resolve a long-standing puzzle concerning the antisymmetry of the flux obtained from uplift ansaetze.

We present an extended version of the Conformal Standard Model (characterized by the absence of any new intermediate scales between the electroweak scale and the Planck scale) with an enlarged scalar sector coupling to right-chiral neutrinos. The scalar potential and the Yukawa couplings involving only right-chiral neutrinos are invariant under a new global symmetry SU(3)$_N$ that complements the standard U(1)$_{B-L}$ symmetry, and is broken explicitly only by the Yukawa interaction, of order $10^{-6}$, coupling right-chiral neutrinos and the electroweak lepton doublets. We point out four main advantages of this enlargement, namely: (1) the economy of the (non-supersymmetric) Standard Model, and thus its observational success, is preserved; (2) thanks to the enlarged scalar sector the RG improved one-loop effective potential is everywhere positive with a stable global minimum, thereby avoiding the notorious instability of the Standard Model vacuum; (3) the pseudo-Goldstone bosons resulting from spontaneous breaking of the SU(3)$_N$ symmetry are natural Dark Matter candidates with calculable small masses and couplings; and (4) the Majorana Yukawa coupling matrix acquires a form naturally adapted to leptogenesis. The model is made perturbatively consistent up to the Planck scale by imposing the vanishing of quadratic divergences at the Planck scale (`softly broken conformal symmetry'). Observable consequences of the model occur mainly via the mixing of the new scalars and the standard model Higgs boson.

In this Letter we show that the required deformation, while not in SU(8), does belong to K(E10), the `maximal compact' subgroup of E10 which is a possible candidate symmetry underlying M theory. The incorporation of infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody symmetries of hyperbolic type, apparently unavoidable for the present scheme to work, opens up completely new perspectives on embedding Standard Model physics into a Planck scale theory of quantum gravity.

However, there remained a systematic mismatch in the electric charges by a spurion charge of $\pm$1/6. We here identify the `missing' U(1) that rectifies this mismatch, and that takes a surprisingly simple, though unexpected form.

A coset model based on the hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra E10 has been conjectured to underly eleven-dimensional supergravity and M theory. In this note we study the canonical structure of the bosonic model for finite- and infinite-dimensional groups. In the case of finite-dimensional groups like GL(n) we exhibit a convenient set of variables with Borel-type canonical brackets. The generalisation to the Kac-Moody case requires a proper treatment of the imaginary roots that remains elusive. As a second result, we show that the supersymmetry constraint of D=11 supergravity can be rewritten in a suggestive way using E10 algebra data. Combined with the canonical structure, this rewriting explains the previously observed association of the canonical constraints with null roots of E10. We also exhibit a basic incompatibility between local supersymmetry and the K(E10) `R symmetry', that can be traced back to the presence of imaginary roots and to the unfaithfulness of the spinor representations occurring in the present formulation of the E10 worldline model, and that may require a novel type of bosonisation/fermionisation for its resolution. This appears to be a key challenge for future progress with E10.

We point out a novel possible mechanism by which the electroweak hierarchy problem can be avoided in the (effective) quantum field theory. Assuming the existence of a UV complete underlying fundamental theory and treating the cutoff scale $Λ$ of the effective field theory as a real physical scale we argue that the hierarchy problem would be solved if the coefficient in front of quadratic divergences vanished for some choice of $Λ$, and if the effective theory mass parameters fixed at $Λ$ by the fundamental theory were hierarchically smaller than $Λ$ itself. While this mechanism most probably cannot work in the Standard Model if the scale $Λ$ is to be close to the Planck scale, we show that it can work in a minimal extension (Conformal Standard Model) proposed recently for a different implementation of soft conformal symmetry breaking.

In making this connection, the so-called generalised vielbein postulate plays a key role. We explicitly show how this postulate can be used to define an E7 valued affine connection and an associated covariant derivative, which yields a generalised curvature tensor for the E7 based exceptional geometry. The analysis of the generalised vielbein postulate also provides a natural explanation for the emergence of the embedding tensor from higher dimensions.

Furthermore, we provide ansaetze for the complete set of 56 vector fields, which are given by more general structures than those available from standard Kaluza-Klein theory. The novel features encountered here have no conventional geometric interpretation and provide a new perspective on Kaluza-Klein theory. We study the recently found set of generalised vielbein postulates and, for the 7-sphere compactification, we show that they reduce to the E7(7) Cartan equation of maximal SO(8) gauged supergravity in four dimensions. By maintaining full on-shell equivalence with the original theory at every step, our construction altogether avoids the constraints usually encountered in other approaches to generalised geometry and, as a side product, also furnishes the non-linear ansatz for the dual (magnetic) 7-form flux for any non-trivial compactification of D=11 supergravity, complementing the known non-linear ansaetze for the metric and the 4-form flux. A preliminary analysis of the generalised vielbein postulate for the new vielbein components reveals tantalising hints of new structures beyond D=11 supergravity and ordinary space-time covariance, and also points to the possible D=11 origins of the embedding tensor. We discuss the extension of these results to E8.

The latter replaces manifestly SO(10) covariant expressions by new expressions that are covariant w.r.t. SO(1,9), the invariance group of the DeWitt metric restricted to the space of scale factors. We present explicit expressions for all K(E10) elements that are associated to real roots of the hyperbolic algebra (of which there are infinitely many), as well as novel explicit realizations of the generators associated to imaginary roots and their multiplicities. Motivated by the fact that there exists a continuous one-parameter family of gauged SO(8) supergravities, possible eleven-dimensional origins of this phenomenon are explored. Taking the original proof of the consistency of the truncation of 11D supergravity to SO(8) gauged supergravity as a starting point, a number of critical issues is discussed, such as the preferred electric-magnetic duality frame in four dimensions and the existence of dual magnetic gauge fields and related quantities in eleven dimensions. Some of those issues are resolved but others seem to point to obstructions in embedding the continuous degeneracy in 11D supergravity. While the final outcome of these efforts remains as yet inconclusive, several new results are obtained. Among those is the full non-linear ansatz for the seven-dimensional flux expressed in terms of the scalars and pseudoscalars of 4D supergravity, valid for both the S^7 and the T^7 truncations without resorting to tensor-scalar duality.
