The interference between the K+K- S-wave and P-wave amplitudes in B_s -> J/psi K+K- decays with the K+K- pairs in the region around the phi(1020) resonance is used to determine the variation of the difference of the strong phase between these amplitudes as a function of K+K- invariant mass. Combined with the results from our CP asymmetry measurements in B_s -> J/psi phi decays, we conclude that the B_s mass eigenstate that is almost CP =+1 is lighter and decays faster than the mass eigenstate that is almost CP =-1. This determines the sign of the decay width difference DeltaGamma_s == Gamma_L -Gamma_H to be positive. Our result also resolves the ambiguity in the past measurements of the CP violating phase phi_s to be close to zero rather than pi. These conclusions are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for the two $χ_c$ spin states, $σ(χ_{c2})/σ(χ_{c1})$, has been determined as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{J/ψ}$, in the range from 2 to 15 GeV/$c$. The results are in agreement with the next-to-leading order non-relativistic QCD model at high $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{J/ψ}$ and lie consistently above the pure leading-order colour singlet prediction.

The D+ μ- μ- and D*+ μ- μ- final states can arise from the presence of virtual Majorana neutrinos of any mass. Other final states containing π+, Ds+, or D0π+ can be mediated by an on-shell Majorana neutrino. No signals are found and upper limits are set on Majorana neutrino production as a function of mass, and also on the B- decay branching fractions.

Photon polarisation in b->s gamma using B->K*e+e- at LHCb
Authors:

Abstract:
The b->s gamma transition proceeds through flavour changing neutral currents, and thus is particularly sensitive to the effects of new physics. An overview of the method to measure the photon polarisation at the LHCb experiment via an angular analysis of B->K*e+e- at low q^2 is presented. The status of the B->K*mu+mu- analysis with 309 pb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV at LHCb is also given.

The charged particles are reconstructed close to the interaction region in the vertex detector, which provides high reconstruction efficiency in the $η$ ranges $-2.5<η<-2.0$ and $2.0<η<4.5$. The data were taken with a minimum bias trigger, only requiring one or more reconstructed tracks in the vertex detector. By selecting an event sample with at least one track with a transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c a hard QCD subsample is investigated. Several event generators are compared with the data; none are able to describe fully the multiplicity distributions or the charged particle density distribution as a function of $η$. In general, the models underestimate the charged particle production.

The angular distributions and the partial branching fraction of the decay $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ are studied using an integrated luminosity of $0.37\,fb^{-1}$ of data collected with the LHCb detector. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons, $A_{\mathrm{FB}}$, the fraction of longitudinal polarisation, $F_{\mathrm{L}}$, and the partial branching fraction, $\mathrm{d}{\mathcal B}/\mathrm{d}q^{2}$, are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The measurements are in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions and are the most precise to date. In the dimuon invariant mass squared range $1.00-6.00{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}^2/c^4$, the results are $A_{\mathrm{FB}}=-0.06\,^{+0.13}_{-0.14} \pm 0.04$, $F_{\mathrm{L}}=0.55\pm 0.10\pm 0.03$ and $\mathrm{d}{\mathcal B}/\mathrm{d}q^{2}=(0.42 \pm 0.06\pm 0.03) \times 10^{-7}c^4/{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}^2$. In a sample of about 8500 B_s -> J/psi phi events isolated from 0.37 fb^-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV we measure phi_s = 0.15 +/- 0.18 (stat) +/- 0.06 (syst) rad. We also find an average B_s decay width Gamma_s == (Gamma_L + Gamma_H)/2 = 0.657 +/- 0.009 (stat) +/- 0.008 (syst) ps^-1 and a decay width difference Delta Gamma_s == Gamma_L - Gamma_H} = 0.123 +/- 0.029 (stat) +/- 0.011 (syst) ps^-1. Our measurement is insensitive to the transformation (phi_s,DeltaGamma_s --> pi - phi_s, - Delta Gamma_s.

Measurements of $b$ hadron production ratios in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 3 pb$^{-1}$ are presented. We study the ratios of strange $B$ meson to light $B$ meson production $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ and $Λ_b^0$ baryon to light $B$ meson production $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)$ as a function of the charmed hadron-muon pair transverse momentum $p_T$ and the $b$ hadron pseudorapidity $η$, for $p_T$ between 0 and 14 GeV and $η$ between 2 and 5. We find that $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ is consistent with being independent of $p_{\rm T}$ and $η$, and we determine $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ = 0.134$\pm$ 0.004 $^{+0.011}_{-0.010}$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The corresponding ratio $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)$ is found to be dependent upon the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron-muon pair, $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)=(0.404\pm 0.017 (stat) \pm 0.027 (syst) \pm 0.105 (Br))\times[1 -(0.031 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst))\times p_T(GeV)]$, where Br reflects an absolute scale uncertainty due to the poorly known branching fraction Br(Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+)$. We extract the ratio of strange $B$ meson to light neutral $B$ meson production $f_s/f_d$ by averaging the result reported here with two previous measurements derived from the relative abundances of $\bar{B}_s \to D_S^+ π^-$ to $\bar{B}^0 \to D^+K^-$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to D^+π^-$. We obtain $f_s/f_d=0.267^{+0.021}_{-0.020}$.

Absolute luminosity measurements are of general interest for colliding-beam experiments at storage rings. These measurements are necessary to determine the absolute cross-sections of reaction processes and are valuable to quantify the performance of the accelerator. Using data taken in 2010, LHCb has applied two methods to determine the absolute scale of its luminosity measurements for proton-proton collisions at the LHC with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. In addition to the classic "van der Meer scan" method a novel technique has been developed which makes use of direct imaging of the individual beams using beam-gas and beam-beam interactions. This beam imaging method is made possible by the high resolution of the LHCb vertex detector and the close proximity of the detector to the beams, and allows beam parameters such as positions, angles and widths to be determined. The results of the two methods have comparable precision and are in good agreement. Combining the two methods, an overall precision of 3.5% in the absolute luminosity determination is reached. The techniques used to transport the absolute luminosity calibration to the full 2010 data-taking period are presented.

The cross-section for inclusive phi production in this kinematic range is sigma(pp -> phi X) = 1758 pm 19(stat) ^{+43}_{-14}(syst) pm 182(scale) microbarn, where the first systematic uncertainty depends on the p_T and y region and the second is related to the overall scale. Predictions based on the Pythia 6.4 generator underestimate the cross-section.

Both ratios are presented as a function of transverse momentum, $p_\mathrm{T}$, and rapidity, $y$, in the ranges {$0.15 < p_\mathrm{T} < 2.50\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$} and {$2.0<y<4.5$}. Results at the two energies are in good agreement as a function of rapidity loss, $Δy = y_\mathrm{beam} - y$, and are consistent with previous measurements. The ratio $\barΛ / Λ$, measuring the transport of baryon number from the collision into the detector, is smaller in data than predicted in simulation, particularly at high rapidity. The ratio $\barΛ / K^0_\mathrm{S}$, measuring the baryon-to-meson suppression in strange quark hadronisation, is significantly larger than expected.

A prototype particle tracking telescope has been constructed using Timepix and Medipix ASIC hybrid pixel assemblies as the six sensing planes. Each telescope plane consisted of one 1.4 cm2 assembly, providing a 256x256 array of 55 micron square pixels. The telescope achieved a pointing resolution of 2.3 micron at the position of the device under test. During a beam test in 2009 the telescope was used to evaluate in detail the performance of two Timepix hybrid pixel assemblies; a standard planar 300 micron thick sensor, and 285 micron thick double sided 3D sensor. This paper describes a detailed charge calibration study of the pixel devices, which allows the true charge to be extracted, and reports on measurements of the charge collection characteristics and Landau distributions. The planar sensor achieved a best resolution of 4.0 micron for angled tracks, and resolutions of between 4.4 and 11 micron for perpendicular tracks, depending on the applied bias voltage. The double sided 3D sensor, which has significantly less charge sharing, was found to have an optimal resolution of 9.0 micron for angled tracks, and a resolution of 16.0 micron for perpendicular tracks. Based on these studies it is concluded that the Timepix ASIC shows an excellent performance when used as a device for charged particle tracking.

Abstract:
Let $(B_{i})$ be a sequence of measurable sets in a probability space $(X,\mathcal{B}, μ)$ such that $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} μ(B_{i}) = \infty$. The classical Borel-Cantelli lemma states that if the sets $B_{i}$ are independent, then $μ(\{x \in X : x \in B_{i} \text{infinitely often (i.o.)}) = 1$. Suppose $(T,X,μ)$ is a dynamical system and $(B_i)$ is a sequence of sets in $X$. We consider whether $T^i x\in B_i$ for $μ$ a.e.\ $x\in X$ and if so, is there an asymptotic estimate on the rate of entry. If $T^i x\in B_i$ infinitely often for $μ$ a.e.\ $x$ we call the sequence $B_i$ a Borel--Cantelli sequence. If the sets $B_i:= B(p,r_i)$ are nested balls about a point $p$ then the question of whether $T^i x\in B_i$ infinitely often for $μ$ a.e.\ $x$ is often called the shrinking target problem. We show, under certain assumptions on the measure $μ$, that for balls $B_i$ if $μ(B_i)\ge i^{-γ}$, $0<γ<1$, then a sufficiently high polynomial rate of decay of correlations for Lipschitz observations implies that the sequence is Borel-Cantelli. If $μ(B_i)\ge \frac{C\log i}{i}$ then exponential decay of correlations implies that the sequence is Borel-Cantelli. If it is only assumed that $μ(B_i) \ge \frac{1}{i}$ then we give conditions in terms of return time statistics which imply that for $μ$ a.e.\ $p$ sequences of nested balls $B(p,1/i)$ are Borel-Cantelli. Corollaries of our results are that for planar dispersing billiards and Lozi maps $μ$ a.e.\ $p$ sequences of nested balls $B(p,1/i)$ are Borel-Cantelli. We also give applications of these results to a variety of non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems.

The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2pb-1. The measured cross-sections integrated over the fiducial region are 10.52 +/- 0.04 +/- 1.40 +1.64/-2.20 mub for prompt J/psi production and 1.14 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.16 mub for J/psi from b-hadron decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The prompt J/psi production cross-section is obtained assuming no J/psi polarisation and the third error indicates the acceptance uncertainty due to this assumption.

We investigate the evolution of the galaxy population since redshift 2 with a focus on the colour bimodality and mass density of the red sequence. We obtain precise and reliable photometric redshifts up to z=2 by supplementing the optical survey COMBO-17 with observations in four near-infrared bands on 0.2 square degrees of the COMBO-17 A901-field. Our results are based on an H-band-selected catalogue of 10692 galaxies complete to H=21.7. We measure the rest-frame colour (U_280-V) of each galaxy, which across the redshift range of our interest requires no extrapolation and is robust against moderate redshift errors by staying clear of the 4000A-break. We measure the colour-magnitude relation of the red sequence as a function of lookback time from the peak in a colour error-weighted histogram, and thus trace the galaxy bimodality out to z~1.65. The (U_280-V) of the red sequence is found to evolve almost linearly with lookback time. At high redshift, we find massive galaxies in both the red and the blue population. Red-sequence galaxies with log M_*/M_sun>11 increase in mass density by a factor of ~4 from z~2 to 1 and remain nearly constant at z<1. However, some galaxies as massive as log M_*/M_sun=11.5 are already in place at z~2.

Extended or generalized similarity is a ubiquitous but not well understood feature of turbulence that is realized over a finite range of scales. ULYSSES spacecraft solar polar passes at solar minimum provide \textit{in situ} observations of evolving anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in the solar wind under ideal conditions of fast quiet flow. We find a single generalized scaling function characterises this finite range turbulence and is insensitive to plasma conditions. The recent unusually inactive solar minimum -with turbulent fluctuations down by a factor of $\sim 2$ in power- provides a test of this invariance.

The power spectrum of the evolving solar wind shows evidence of a spectral break between an inertial range of turbulent fluctuations at higher frequencies and a "$1/f$" like region at lower frequencies. In the ecliptic plane at $\sim 1$ AU, this break occurs approximately at timescales of a few hours, and is observed in the power spectra of components of velocity and magnetic field. The "$1/f$" energy range is of more direct coronal origin than the inertial range, and carries signatures of the complex magnetic field structure of the solar corona, and of footpoint stirring in the solar photosphere. To quantify the scaling properties we use generic statistical methods such as generalised structure functions and PDFs, focusing on solar cycle dependence and on anisotropy with respect to the background magnetic field. We present structure function analysis of magnetic and velocity field fluctuations, using a novel technique to decompose the fluctuations into directions parallel and perpendicular to the mean local background magnetic field. Whilst the magnetic field is close to "$1/f$", we show that the velocity field is "$1/f^α$" with $α\neq1$. For the velocity, the value of $α$ varies between parallel and perpendicular fluctuations and with the solar cycle. There is also variation in $α$ with solar wind speed. We have examined the PDFs in the fast, quiet solar wind and intriguingly, whilst parallel and perpendicular are distinct, both the ${\boldmath$B$}$ field and velocity show the same PDF of their perpendicular flucutations, which is close to gamma or inverse Gumbel. These results point to distinct physical processes in the corona, and to their map** out into the solar wind. The scaling exponents obtained constrain the models for these processes.

We present the results of a systematic search for large-scale spectroscopic variability in apparently single Wolf-Rayet stars brighter than ~12.5. In this first paper we characterize the various forms of variability detected and distinguish several separate groups. For each star in our sample, we obtained 4-5 high-resolution spectra with a signal-to-noise ratio ~100. Our ultimate goal is to identify new candidates presenting variability that potentially comes from Co-rotating Interaction Regions (CIR).
Out of a sample of 25 stars, 10 were found to display large-scale changes of which 4 are of CIR-type (WR1, WR115, WR120 and WR134). The star WR134 was already known to show such changes from previous studies. Three WN8 stars present a different type of large-scale variability and we believe deserve a group of their own. Also, all three WC9d stars in our sample present large-scale variability, but it remains to be checked if these are binaries, as many dust-making WR stars are double. Finally, of the remaining stars, 10 were found to show small-amplitude spectral changes which we attribute to normal line-profile variability due to inhomogeneities in the wind, and 5 were found to show no spectral variability, as far as can be concluded from the data in hand.
Follow-up studies are required to identify potential periods for our candidates showing CIR-type changes and eventually estimate a rotation rate for these WR stars.

Solar wind fluctuations, such as magnetic field or velocity, show power law power spectra suggestive both of an inertial range of intermittent turbulence (with $\sim -5/3$ exponent) and at lower frequencies, of fluctuations of coronal origin (with $\sim -1$ exponent). The ULYSSES spacecraft spent many months in the quiet fast solar wind above the Sun's polar coronal holes in a highly ordered magnetic field. We use statistical analysis methods such as the generalized structure function (GSF) and extended self-similarity (ESS) to quantify the scaling of the moments of the probability density function of fluctuations in the magnetic field. The GSFs give power law scaling in the ``$f^{-1}$'' range of the form $<| y(t+τ)-y(t)|^{m}>\simτ^{ζ(m)}$, but ESS is required to reveal scaling in the inertial range, which is of the form $<| y(t+τ)-y(t)|^{m}>\sim [g(τ)]^{ζ(m)}$. We find that $g(τ)$ is independent of spacecraft position and $g(τ)\simτ^{-log_{10}(\tildeλτ)}$. The ``$f^{-1}$'' scaling fluctuates with radial spacecraft position. This confirms that, whereas the ``$f^{-1}$'' fluctuations are directly influenced by the corona, the inertial range fluctuations are consistent with locally evolving turbulence, but with an ``envelope'' $g(τ)$, which captures the formation of the quiet fast solar wind.

At solar maximum, when the coronal magnetic field is dynamic and topologically complex, we find self-similar scaling in the solar wind, whereas at solar mimimum, when the coronal fields are more ordered, we find multifractality. This quantifies the solar wind signature that is of direct coronal origin, and distinguishes it from that of local MHD turbulence, with quantitative implications for our understanding of coronal heating of the solar wind.
