Dynamics and direct $C¶$ violation in three-body charmless decays of charged $B$ mesons to a proton, an antiproton and a light meson (pion or kaon) are studied using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0$ {\,fb}^{-1}$, collected by the ${LHCb}$ experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Production spectra are determined as a function of Dalitz-plot and helicity variables. The forward-backward asymmetry of the light meson in the $p\bar p$ rest frame is measured. No significant $C¶$ asymmetry in $B^+ \to p \bar p K^+$ decay is found in any region of the Dalitz plane. We present the first observation of the decay $B^+ \to \kern 0.1em\bar{\kern -0.1emΛ}(1520)(\to K^+\bar p)p$ near the $K^+\bar p$ threshold and measure $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \kern 0.1em\bar{\kern -0.1emΛ}(1520)p)=(3.9^{+1.0}_{-0.9} (\mathrm{stat})\pm0.1 (\mathrm{syst})\pm0.3 (\mathrm{BF}))\times 10^{-7}$, where BF denotes the uncertainty on secondary branching fractions.

Abstract:

A time-integrated branching fraction of ${\cal B}(B^0_s \toμ^+μ^-) = (2.9^{+1.1}_{-1.0})\times 10^{-9}$ is obtained and an upper limit of ${\cal B}(B^0 \toμ^+μ^-) < 7.4\times 10^{-10}$ at 95% confidence level is set. These results are consistent with the Standard Model expectations.

A search for the lepton-flavour violating decays $B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ and $B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ is performed with a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. The observed number of $B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ and $B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ candidates is consistent with background expectations. Upper limits on the branching fractions of both decays are determined to be $BR(B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) < 1.1 \,(1.4) \times 10^{-8}$ and $BR (B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) < 2.8 \,(3.7) \times 10^{-9}$ at 90% (95%) confidence level (C.L.). These limits are a factor of twenty lower than those set by previous experiments. Lower bounds on the Pati-Salam leptoquark masses are also calculated, $M_{\rm LQ} (B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) > 107$ TeV/c$^2$ and $M_{\rm LQ} (B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) > 126$ TeV/c$^2$ at 95% C.L., and are a factor of two higher than the previous bounds.

A study of $D^+π^-$, $D^0 π^+$ and $D^{*+}π^-$ final states is performed using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $fb^{-1}$, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The $D_1(2420)^0$ resonance is observed in the $D^{*+}π^-$ final state and the $D^*_2(2460)$ resonance is observed in the $D^+π^-$, $D^0 π^+$ and $D^{*+}π^-$ final states. For both resonances, their properties and spin-parity assignments are obtained. In addition, two natural parity and two unnatural parity resonances are observed in the mass region between 2500 and 2800 MeV. Further structures in the region around 3000 MeV are observed in all the $D^{*+}π^-$, $D^+π^-$ and $D^0 π^+$ final states.

Prompt production of charmonium $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons is studied using proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$TeV. The $χ_{c}$ mesons are identified through their decay to $J/ψγ$, with $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$ using photons that converted in the detector. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector, is used to measure the relative prompt production rate of $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ in the rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$ as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum from 3 to 20 GeV$/c$. First evidence for $χ_{c0}$ meson production at a high-energy hadron collider is also presented.

The ratio of the Λb baryon lifetime to that of the B0 meson is measured using 1.0/fb of integrated luminosity in 7 TeV center-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC. The Λb baryon is observed for the first time in the decay mode Λb -> J/ψpK-, while the B0 meson decay used is the well known B0 -> J/ψpi+K- mode, where the pi+ K- mass is consistent with that of the K*0(892) meson. The ratio of lifetimes is measured to be 0.976 +/- 0.012 +/- 0.006, in agreement with theoretical expectations based on the heavy quark expansion. Using previous determinations of the B0 meson lifetime, the Λb lifetime is found to be 1.482 +/- 0.018 +/- 0.012 ps. In both cases the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

No significant signals are seen for $B^{0} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}$ and $B^{+} \to J/ψ p \overline{p} π^{+}$ decays, for which the corresponding limits are set: ${\cal{B}}(B^{0} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}) < 5.2 \times 10^{-7}$, which significantly improves the existing limit; and ${\cal{B}}(B^{+} \to J/ψ p \overline{p} π^{+}) < 5.0 \times 10^{-7}$, which is the first limit on this branching fraction.

The production cross-sections of B mesons are measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using data collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to a integrated luminosity of 0.36 fb-1. The B+, B0 and Bs0 mesons are reconstructed in the exclusive decays B+ -> J/psi K+, B0 -> J/psi K*0 and Bs0 -> J/psi phi, with J/psi -> mu+ mu-, K*0 -> K+ pi- and phi -> K+ K-. The differential cross-sections are measured as functions of B meson transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, in the range 0 < pT < 40 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The integrated cross-sections in the same pT and y ranges, including charge-conjugate states, are measured to be sigma(pp -> B+ + X) = 38.9 +- 0.3 (stat.) +- 2.5 (syst.) +- 1.3 (norm.) mub, sigma(pp -> B0 + X) = 38.1 +- 0.6 (stat.) +- 3.7 (syst.) +- 4.7 (norm.) mub, sigma(pp -> Bs0 + X) = 10.5 +- 0.2 (stat.) +- 0.8 (syst.) +- 1.0 (norm.) mub, where the third uncertainty arises from the pre-existing branching fraction measurements.

The differential branching fraction of the decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$ is measured as a function of the square of the dimuon invariant mass, $q^2$. A yield of $78\pm12$ $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$ decays is observed using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0\,fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 7\,TeV. A significant signal is found in the $q^2$ region above the square of the $J/ψ$ mass, while at lower-$q^2$ values upper limits are set on the differential branching fraction. Integrating the differential branching fraction over $q^2$, while excluding the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ regions, gives a branching fraction of $\BF($Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$)=(0.96\pm 0.16\stat\pm 0.13\syst\pm 0.21 (\mathrm{norm}))\times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the normalisation mode, $$Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/psiΛ$, respectively.

Abstract:
The first observation of the decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ is reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV$, collected with the LHCb detector. The first observation of the decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ is reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV$, collected with the LHCb detector. A yield of $30 \pm 6$ $B_s^0 \rightarrow (K^+K^-)(K^-π^+)$ decays is found in the mass windows $1012.5 < M(K^+K^-) < 1026.5 MeV/c^2$ and $746 < M(K^-π^+)< 1046 MeV/c^2$. The signal yield is found to be dominated by $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays, and the corresponding branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}) = (1.10 \pm 0.24 (stat) \pm 0.14 (syst) \pm 0.08 (f_d/f_s)) \times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the ratio of fragmentation fractions $f_d/f_s$ which accounts for the different production rate of $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ mesons. The significance of $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ signal is 6.1 standard deviations. The fraction of longitudinal polarization in $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays is found to be $f_0 = 0.51 \pm 0.15 (stat) \pm 0.07 (syst)$.

The charmless decays $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}π^+π^-$ and $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}K^+K^-$ are reconstructed using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by LHCb in 2011. The inclusive charge asymmetries of these modes are measured as $A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}π^+π^-) = 0.032 \pm 0.008 \stat \pm 0.004 \syst \pm 0.007 (JψK^{\pm})$ and $A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}K^+K^-) = -0.043 \pm 0.009 \stat \pm 0.003 \syst \pm 0.007 (JψK^{\pm})$, where the third uncertainty is due to the $C\!P$ asymmetry of the $B^{\pm}\to JψK^{\pm}$ reference mode. The significance of $A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}K^+K^-)$ exceeds three standard deviations and is the first evidence of an inclusive $C\!P$ asymmetry in charmless three-body $B$ decays. In addition to the inclusive $C\!P$ asymmetries, larger asymmetries are observed in localised regions of phase space.

Central limit theorems for the shrinking target problem

The question of whether $T^i x\in B_i$ infinitely often (i. o.) for $μ$ a.e.\ $x$ is often called the shrinking target problem. In many dynamical settings it has been shown that if $E_n:=\sum_{i=1}^n μ(B_i)$ diverges then there is a quantitative rate of entry and…

Suppose $B_i:= B(p,r_i)$ are nested balls of radius $r_i$ about a point $p$ in a dynamical system $(T,X,μ)$. The question of whether $T^i x\in B_i$ infinitely often (i. o.) for $μ$ a.e.\ $x$ is often called the shrinking target problem. In many dynamical settings it has been shown that if $E_n:=\sum_{i=1}^n μ(B_i)$ diverges then there is a quantitative rate of entry and $\lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{1}{E_n} \sum_{j=1}^{n} 1_{B_i} (T^i x) \to 1$ for $μ$ a.e. $x\in X$. This is a self-norming type of strong law of large numbers. We establish self-norming central limit theorems (CLT) of the form $\lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{1}{a_n} \sum_{i=1}^{n} [1_{B_i} (T^i x)-μ(B_i)] \to N(0,1)$ (in distribution) for a variety of hyperbolic and non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems, the normalization constants are $a^2_n \sim E [\sum_{i=1}^n 1_{B_i} (T^i x)-μ(B_i)]^2$. Dynamical systems to which our results apply include smooth expanding maps of the interval, Rychlik type maps, Gibbs-Markov maps, rational maps and, in higher dimensions, piecewise expanding maps. For such central limit theorems the main difficulty is to prove that the non-stationary variance has a limit in probability.

A search for the rare decay $D^0 \to μ^+ μ^-$is performed using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.9 fb$^{-1}$, of $pp$ collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The observed number of events is consistent with the background expectations and corresponds to an upper limit of \mbox{${\cal B}(D^0 \to μ^+ μ^-) < 6.2(7.6) \times 10^{-9}$} at \mbox{90%} \mbox{(95%)} confidence level. This result represents an improvement of more than a factor twenty with respect to previous measurements.

The determination of the differential branching fraction and the first angular analysis of the decay $B_s^0\toφμ^{+}μ^{-}$ are presented using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s}=7\,{\rm TeV}$. The differential branching fraction is determined in bins of $q^{2}$, the invariant dimuon mass squared. Integration over the full $q^{2}$ range yields a total branching fraction of ${\cal B}(B_s^0\toφμ^{+}μ^{-}) = (7.07\,^{+0.64}_{-0.59}\pm 0.17 \pm 0.71)\times 10^{-7}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third originates from the branching fraction of the normalisation channel. An angular analysis is performed to determine the angular observables $F_{\rm L}$, $S_3$, $A_6$, and $A_9$. The observables are consistent with Standard Model expectations.

A combination of three LHCb measurements of the CKM angle gamma is presented. The decays B->DK and B->Dpi are used, where D denotes an admixture of D0 and D0-bar mesons, decaying into K+K-, pi+pi-, K+-pi-+, K+-pi-+pi+-pi-+, KSpi+pi-, or KSK+K- final states. All measurements use a dataset corresponding to 1.0 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. Combining results from B->DK decays alone a best-fit value of gamma = 72.0 deg is found, and confidence intervals are set gamma in [56.4,86.7] deg at 68% CL, gamma in [42.6,99.6] deg at 95% CL. The best-fit value of gamma found from a combination of results from B->Dpi decays alone, is gamma = 18.9 deg, and the confidence intervals gamma in [7.4,99.2] deg or [167.9,176.4] deg at 68% CL, are set, without constraint at 95% CL. The combination of results from B->DK and B->Dpi decays gives a best-fit value of gamma = 72.6 deg and the confidence intervals gamma in [55.4,82.3] deg at 68% CL, gamma in [40.2,92.7] deg at 95% CL are set. All values are expressed modulo 180 deg, and are obtained taking into account the effect of D0-D0bar mixing.

Several angular observables are measured in bins of the dimuon invariant mass squared, $q^{2}$. A first measurement of the zero-crossing point of the forward-backward asymmetry of the dimuon system is also presented. The zero-crossing point is measured to be $q_{0}^{2} = 4.9 \pm 0.9 \,{\rm GeV}^{2}/c^{4}$, where the uncertainty is the sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties. The results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions.

Using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, collected by LHCb in 2011 at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, we report the measurement of direct CP violation in $B^0_s \to K^-π^+$ decays, $A_{C/!P}(B^0_s \rightarrow K^- π^+)=0.27 \pm 0.04\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.01\,\mathrm{(syst)}$, with significance exceeding five standard deviations. This is the first observation of CP violation in the decays of $B^0_s$ mesons. Furthermore, we provide an improved determination of direct CP violation in $B^0 \to K^+π^-$ decays, $A_{C/!P}(B^0\rightarrow K^+ π^-)=-0.080 \pm 0.007\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.003\,\mathrm{(syst)}$, which is the most precise measurement of this quantity to date.

A key ingredient to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model in $B^{0}_{s}$ mixing phenomena is the measurement of the $B^{0}_{s}$-$\bar{B}^{0}_{s}$ oscillation frequency, which is equivalent to the mass difference $Δm_{s}$ of the $B^{0}_{s}$ mass eigenstates. Using the world's largest $B^{0}_{s}$ meson sample accumulated in a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at the CERN LHC in 2011, a measurement of $Δm_{s}$ is presented. A total of about 34,000 $B^{0}_{s}\rightarrowD^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ signal decays are reconstructed, with an average decay time resolution of 44 fs. The oscillation frequency is measured to be \mbox{$Δm_{s}$ = 17.768 $\pm$ 0.023 (stat) $\pm$ 0.006 (syst) ps$^{-1}$}, which is the most precise measurement to date.

The decays $B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^+$ and $B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^{*+}$ are observed for the first time using a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3$fb^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$=7 and 8 TeV. The statistical significance for both signals is in excess of 9 standard deviations. The following ratios of branching fractions are measured to be $BR(B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^+)/BR(B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψπ+) = 2.90 \pm 0.57 \pm 0.24$, $BR(B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^{*+}) / BR (B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^+) = 2.37 \pm 0.56 \pm 0.10$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The mass of the \Bc meson is measured to be $m_{B^+_c} = 6276.28 \pm 1.44 (stat) \pm 0.36(syst) MeV/c^2$, using the $B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^+$ decay mode.

Searches for the lepton flavour violating decay $τ^-\rightarrow μ^-μ^+μ^-$ and the lepton flavour and baryon number violating decays $τ^-\rightarrow \bar{p}μ^+μ^-$ and $τ^-\rightarrow pμ^-μ^-$ have been carried out using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, taken by the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. No evidence has been found for any signal, and limits have been set at 90% confidence level on the branching fractions: $\cal B(τ^-\rightarrow μ^-μ^+μ^-) < 8.0 \times 10^{-8}$, $\cal B(τ^-\rightarrow \bar{p}μ^+μ^-) < 3.3 \times 10^{-7}$ and $\cal B(τ^-\rightarrow pμ^-μ^-) < 4.4 \times 10^{-7}$. The results for the $τ^-\rightarrow \bar{p}μ^+μ^-$ and $τ^-\rightarrow pμ^-μ^-$ decay modes represent the first direct experimental limits on these channels.

The branching fraction $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}e^+e^-$ is measured to be $$ B(B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}e^+e^-)^{30-1000 MeV/c^2}= (3.1\, ^{+0.9\mbox{} +0.2}_{-0.8\mbox{}-0.3} \pm 0.2)\times 10^{-7}, $$ where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third comes from the uncertainties on the B^0 \rightarrow J/ψK^{*0}$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow e^+e^- $ branching fractions.

The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using $pp$ collision data at \sqrt{s}=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1, collected with the LHCb detector. The decay time distribution is characterised by the decay widths Γ_L and Γ_H of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_s^0--\bar{B}_s^0 system and by a CP-violating phase φ_s. In a sample of 27\,617 B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays, where the dominant contribution comes from B_s^0\to J/ψφ decays, these parameters are measured to be
φ_s = 0.07 \pm 0.09 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad,
Γ_s \equiv (Γ_L+Γ_H)/2 = 0.663 \pm 0.005 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1,
ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_L -Γ_H = 0.100 \pm 0.016 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst) & ps^-1, corresponding to the single most precise determination of φ_s, ΔΓ_s and Γ_s. The result of performing a combined analysis with B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^- decays gives
φ_s = 0.01 \pm 0.07 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad,
Γ_s = 0.661 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1,
ΔΓ_s = 0.106 \pm 0.011 (stat) \pm 0.007 (syst) & ps^-1.
All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Limits on the cross-section times branching fraction for neutral Higgs bosons, produced in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, and decaying to two tau leptons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, are presented. The result is based on a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector. Candidates are identified by reconstructing final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. A model independent upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on a neutral Higgs boson cross-section times branching fraction. It varies from 8.6 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 0.7 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 250 GeV, and is compared to the Standard Model expectation. An upper limit on $\tanβ$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model is set in the $m_{h^0}^\mathrm{max}$ scenario. It ranges from 34 for a CP-odd Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 70 for a pseudo-scalar Higgs boson mass of 140 GeV.

Edge localised mode (ELM) measurements from reproducibly similar plasmas in the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak, which differ only in their gas puffing rate, are analysed in terms of the pattern in the sequence of inter-ELM time intervals. It is found that the category of ELM defined empirically as Type I - typically more regular, less frequent, and having larger amplitude than other ELM types…

It is found that the category of ELM defined empirically as Type I - typically more regular, less frequent, and having larger amplitude than other ELM types - embraces substantially different ELMing processes. By quantifying the structure in the sequence of inter-ELM time intervals using delay time plots, we reveal transitions between distinct phase space dynamics, implying transitions between distinct underlying physical processes. The control parameter for these transitions between these different ELMing processes is the gas puffing rate.

In this decay channel, the CP-violating weak phase arises due to CP violation in the interference between $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing and the $b \to s \bar{s} s $ gluonic penguin decay amplitude. Using a sample of $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\; fb^{-1}$ and collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $7 \rm TeV$ with the LHCb detector, $880\ \B_s^0 \to φφ$ signal decays are obtained. The CP-violating phase is measured to be in the interval [-2.46, -0.76] \rm rad$ at 68% confidence level. The p-value of the Standard Model prediction is 16%.

Using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1}, the ratio of branching fractions of the B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+ decay relative to the B0 -> D*- pi+ decay is measured to be B(B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+) / B(B0 -> D*- pi+) = 2.64 \pm 0.04 (stat.) \pm 0.13 (syst.). The Cabibbo-suppressed decay B0 -> D*- K+ pi- pi+ is observed for the first time and the measured ratio of branching fractions is B(B0 -> D*- K+ pi- pi+) / B(B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+) = (6.47 \pm 0.37 (stat.) \pm 0.35 (syst.)) x 10^{-2}. A search for orbital excitations of charm mesons contributing to the B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+ final state is also performed, and the first observation of the B0 -> Dbar_{1}(2420)^0 pi+ pi- decay is reported with the ratio of branching fractions B(B0 -> (Dbar_{1}(2420)^0 -> D*- pi+) pi- pi+) / B(B0 -> D*- pi+ pi- pi+) = (2.04 \pm 0.42 (stat.) \pm 0.22 (syst.)) x 10^{-2}, where the numerator represents a product of the branching fractions B(B0 -> Dbar_{1}(2420)^0 pi- pi+) and B(Dbar_{1}(2420)^0 -> D*- pi+).

A search for CP violation in D+ -> phi pi+ decays is performed using data collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1} at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV. The CP-violating asymmetry is measured to be (-0.04+/-0.14+/-0.14)% for candidates with K-K+ mass within 20 MeV/c^{2} of the phi meson mass. A search for a CP-violating asymmetry that varies across the phi mass region of the D+ -> K-K+pi+ Dalitz plot is also performed, and no evidence for CP violation is found. In addition, the CP asymmetry in the Ds+ -> Ks pi+ decay is measured to be (0.61+/-0.83+/-0.14)%.

An analysis of $B^{\pm}\to DK^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}\to Dπ^{\pm}$ decays is presented where the $D$ meson is reconstructed in the four-body final state $K^{\pm}π^{\mp} π^+ π^-$. Using LHCb data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0{\rm \,fb}^{-1}$, first observations are made of the suppressed ADS modes $B^{\pm}\to [π^{\pm} K^{\mp}π^+π^-]_D K^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}\to [π^{\pm} K^{\mp} π^+π^- ]_Dπ^{\pm}$ with a significance of $5.1σ$ and greater than $10σ$, respectively. Measurements of CP asymmetries and CP-conserving ratios of partial widths from this family of decays are also performed. The magnitude of the ratio between the suppressed and favoured $B^{\pm}\to DK^{\pm}$ amplitudes is determined to be $r^K_B = 0.097 \pm{0.011}$.

\noindent A search for the decays $B^0_{s}\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-$ and $B^0 \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-$ is performed using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0\ensuremath{\{\,fb}^{-1}}\xspace, collected with the LHCb detector in 2011. The number of candidates observed is consistent with the expected background and, assuming phase-space models of the decays, limits on the branching fractions are set: \{${\ensuremath{\cal B}\xspace}(B^0_{s}\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-) < 1.6 \ (1.2) \times 10^{-8}$} and \{${\ensuremath{\cal B}\xspace}(B^0 \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-)< 6.6 \ (5.3) \times 10^{-9}$} at 95\,% (90\,%) confidence level. In addition, limits are set in the context of a supersymmetric model which allows for the $B^0_{(s)}$ meson to decay into a scalar ($S$) and pseudoscalar particle ($P$), where $S$ and $P$ have masses of 2.5 GeV and 214.3 MeV, respectively, both resonances decay into $μ^+μ^-$. The branching fraction limits for these decays are \{${\ensuremath{\cal B}\xspace}(\ensuremath{B^0_{s}\rightarrow SP}\xspace) < 1.6 \ (1.2) \times 10^{-8}$} and \{${\ensuremath{\cal B}\xspace}(\ensuremath{B^0\rightarrow SP}\xspace)< 6.3 \ (5.1) \times 10^{-9}$} at 95% (90%) confidence level.

A search for the decay Bs -> D*-+ π+- is presented using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 of pp collisions collected by LHCb. This decay is expected to be mediated by a W-exchange diagram, with little contribution from rescattering processes, and therefore a measurement of the branching fraction will help to understand the mechanism behind related decays such as Bs -> π+ π- and Bs -> D Dbar. Systematic uncertainties are minimised by using B0 -> D*-+ π+- as a normalisation channel. We find no evidence for a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of BR(Bs -> D*-+ π+-) < 6.1 (7.8) x10^(-6) at 90% (95%) confidence level.

An angular analysis of Lambda_b0 -> J/psi Lambda decays is performed using a data sample corresponding to 1.0 fb^{-1} collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector at the LHC. A parity violating asymmetry parameter characterising the Lambda_b0 -> J/psi Lambda decay of 0.05 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.07 and a Lambda_b0 transverse production polarisation of 0.06 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.02 are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

The decays D0 -> K- pi+, D+ -> K- pi+ pi+, D*+ -> D0(K- pi+) pi+, D_s+ -> phi(K- K+) pi+, Lambda_c+ -> p K- pi+, and their charge conjugates are analysed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15 nb^{-1}. Differential cross-sections dsigma/dp_T are measured for prompt production of the five charmed hadron species in bins of transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < p_T < 8 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. Theoretical predictions are compared to the measured differential cross-sections. The integrated cross-sections of the charm hadrons are computed in the above p_T-y range, and their ratios are reported. A combination of the five integrated cross-section measurements gives
sigma(c\bar{c})_{p_T < 8 GeV/c, 2.0 < y < 4.5} = 1419 +/- 12 (stat) +/- 116 (syst) +/- 65 (frag) microbarn,
where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the fragmentation functions.

A modified Dalitz plot analysis of the final state is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. Resonant structures are observed in the K+K- mass spectrum as well as a significant non-resonant S-wave contribution. The largest resonant component is the φ(1020), accompanied by f0(980), f'2(1525), and four additional resonances. The overall branching fraction is measured to be B(Bs->J/ψK+K-)=(7.70 +/-0.08 +/- 0.39 +/- 0.60)x 10^(-4), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the ratio of the number of Bs to B- mesons produced. The mass and width of the f'2(1525) are measured to be 1522.2 +/- 2.8^{+5.3}_{-2.0} MeV and 84 +/- 6^{+10}_{-5} MeV, respectively. The final state fractions of the other resonant states are also reported.

Significant Λ_b^0 \rightarrow J/ψΛ, Ξ_b^-\rightarrow J/ψΞ^- and Ω_b^- \rightarrow J/ψΩ^- signals are observed and the corresponding masses are measured to be M(Λ_b^0) = 5619.53 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.45 (syst) MeV/c^2, M(Ξ_b^-) = 5795.8 \pm 0.9 (stat) \pm 0.4 (syst) MeV/c^2, M(Ω_b^-) = 6046.0 \pm 2.2 (stat) \pm 0.5 (syst) MeV/c^2, while the differences with respect to the Λ_b^0 mass are M(Ξ_b^-)-M(Λ_b^0) = 176.2 \pm 0.9 (stat) \pm 0.1 (syst) MeV/c^2, M(Ω_b^-)-M(Λ_b^0) = 426.4 \pm 2.2 (stat) \pm 0.4 (syst) MeV/c^2. These are the most precise mass measurements of the Λ_b^0, Ξ_b^- and Ω_b^- baryons to date. Averaging the above Λ_b^0 mass measurement with that published by LHCb using 35 pb^{-1} of data collected in 2010 yields M(Λ_b^0) = 5619.44 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.38 (syst) MeV/c^2.

Exclusive $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ vector meson production has been observed in the dimuon channel using the LHCb detector. The cross-section times branching fractions to two muons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 are measured to be $ σ_{pp\rightarrow J/ψ(\rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-})} (2.0 <η_{μ^{\pm}}< 4.5) = 307 \pm 21 \pm 36 \text{pb}, σ_{pp\rightarrow ψ(2S) (\rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-})} (2.0 <η_{μ^{\pm}}< 4.5) = 7.8 \pm 1.3 \pm 1.0 \text{pb}, $ where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The measurements are found to be in good agreement with results from previous experiments and theoretical predictions. The $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross-section has been measured as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy. The results are consistent with measurements obtained at HERA and confirm a similar power law behaviour for the photoproduction cross-section.

Interpretation of CP violation measurements using charmonium decays, in both the B0 and Bs systems, can be subject to changes due to "penguin" type diagrams. These effects can be investigated using measurements of the Cabibbo-suppressed B0->J/ψpi+pi- decays. The final state composition of this channel is investigated using a 1.0/fb sample of data produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC and collected by the LHCb experiment. A modified Dalitz plot analysis is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. An improved measurement of the B0->J/ψpi+pi- branching fraction of (3.97 +/-0.09+/- 0.11 +/- 0.16)x10^{-5} is reported where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty of the branching fraction of the decay B- -> J/ψK- used as a normalization channel. In the J/ψpi+pi- final state significant production of f0(500) and rho(770) resonances is found, both of which can be used for CP violation studies. In contrast evidence for the f0(980) resonance is not found, thus establishing the first upper limit on the branching fraction product B(B0->J/ψf0(980) x B(f0(980)-> pi+ pi-) < 1.1x10^{-6}, leading to an upper limit on the absolute value of the mixing angle of the f0(980)$ with the f0(500) of <31 degrees, both at 90% confidence level.

The relative production rate of $B^{0}_{s}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons is determined with the hadronic decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$. The measurement uses data corresponding to 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV recorded in the forward region with the LHCb experiment. The ratio of production rates, $f_{s}/f_{d}$, is measured to be $0.238 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.021 $, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third theoretical. This is combined with a previous LHCb measurement to obtain $f_{s}/f_{d} = 0.256 \pm 0.020$. The dependence of $f_{s}/f_{d}$ on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $B$ meson is determined using the decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$. There is evidence for a decrease with increasing transverse momentum, whereas the ratio remains constant as a function of pseudorapidity. In addition, the ratio of branching fractions of the decays $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$ is measured to be $0.0822 \pm 0.0011 (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.0025 (\textrm{syst})$.
