The Quasi-hyperbolicity Constant of a Metric Space
Abstract: We introduce the quasi-hyperbolicity constant of a metric space, a rough isometry invariant that measures how a metric space deviates from being Gromov hyperbolic. This number, for unbounded spaces, lies in the closed interval $[1,2]$. The quasi-hyperbolicity constant of an unbounded Gromov hyperbolic space is equal to one. For a CAT$(0)$-space, it is bounded from above by $\sqrt{2}$. The quasi-hy… ▽ More

Finitely $\mathcal{F}$-amenable actions and Decomposition Complexity of Groups
Abstract: In his work on the Farrell-Jones Conjecture, Arthur Bartels introduced the concept of a "finitely $\mathcal{F}$-amenable" group action, where $\mathcal{F}$ is a family of subgroups. We show how a finitely $\mathcal{F}$-amenable action of a countable group $G$ on a compact metric space, where the asymptotic dimensions of the elements of $\mathcal{F}$ are bounded from above, gives an upper bound for… ▽ More

Virtual and welded periods of classical knots
Abstract: We show that any virtual or welded period of a classical knot $K$ can be realized as a classical period. A direct consequence is that a classical knot admits only finitely many virtual or welded periods.

Metric transforms yielding Gromov hyperbolic spaces
Abstract: A real valued function $\varphi$ of one variable is called a metric transform if for every metric space $(X,d)$ the composition $d_\varphi = \varphi\circ d$ is also a metric on $X$. We give a complete characterization of the class of approximately nondecreasing, unbounded metric transforms $\varphi$ such that the transformed Euclidean half line $([0,\infty),|\cdot|_\varphi)$ is Gromov hyperbolic.… ▽ More

Alexander invariants of periodic virtual knots
Abstract: We show that every periodic virtual knot can be realized as the closure of a periodic virtual braid and use this to study the Alexander invariants of periodic virtual knots. If $K$ is a $q$-periodic and almost classical knot, we show that its quotient knot $K_*$ is also almost classical, and in the case $q=p^r$ is a prime power, we establish an analogue of Murasugi's congruence relating the Alexan… ▽ More

Regular Finite Decomposition Complexity
Abstract: We introduce the notion of regular finite decomposition complexity of a metric family. This generalizes Gromov's finite asymptotic dimension and is motivated by the concept of finite decomposition complexity (FDC) due to Guentner, Tessera and Yu. Regular finite decomposition complexity implies FDC and has all the permanence properties that are known for FDC, as well as a new one called Finite Quot… ▽ More

Hyperbolic Dimension and Decomposition Complexity
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide some new tools to aid the study of decomposition complexity, a notion introduced by Guentner, Tessera and Yu. In this paper, three equivalent definitions for decomposition complexity are established. We prove that metric spaces with finite hyperbolic dimension have finite (weak) decomposition complexity, and we prove that the collection of metric families that a… ▽ More

Virtual knot groups and almost classical knots
Abstract: We define a group-valued invariant of virtual knots and relate it to various other group-valued invariants of virtual knots, including the extended group of Silver-Williams and the quandle group of Manturov and Bardakov-Bellingeri. A virtual knot is called almost classical if it admits a diagram with an Alexander numbering, and in that case we show that the group factors as a free product of the u… ▽ More

Alexander invariants for virtual knots
Abstract: Given a virtual knot $K$, we construct a group $VG_K$ called the virtual knot group, and we use the elementary ideals of $VG_K$ to define invariants of $K$ called the virtual Alexander invariants. For instance, associated to the $k=0$ ideal is a polynomial $H_K(s,t,q)$ in three variables which we call the virtual Alexander polynomial, and we show that it is closely related to the generalized Alexa… ▽ More

Coarse structures on groups
Abstract: We introduce the group-compact coarse structure on a Hausdorff topological group in the context of coarse structures on an abstract group which are compatible with the group operations. We develop asymptotic dimension theory for the group-compact coarse structure generalizing several familiar results for discrete groups. We show that the asymptotic dimension in our sense of the free topological gr… ▽ More

A Hochschild homology Euler characteristic for circle actions
Abstract: We define a "circle Euler characteristic" of a circle action on a compact manifold or finite complex X. It lies in the first Hochschild homology group of ZG where G is the fundamental group of X. It is analogous in many ways to the ordinary Euler characteristic. One application is an intuitively satisfying formula for the Euler class (integer coefficients) of the normal bundle to a smooth circle… ▽ More
