We use Fourier Neural Operators (FNOs) to study the relation between the modulus and phase of amplitudes in $2\to 2$ elastic scattering at fixed energies. Unlike previous approaches, we do not employ the integral relation imposed by unitarity, but instead train FNOs to discover it from many samples of amplitudes with finite partial wave expansions. When trained only on true samples, the FNO correctly predicts (unique or ambiguous) phases of amplitudes with infinite partial wave expansions. When also trained on false samples, it can rate the quality of its prediction by producing a true/false classifying index. We observe that the value of this index is strongly correlated with the violation of the unitarity constraint for the predicted phase, and present examples where it delineates the boundary between allowed and disallowed profiles of the modulus. Our application of FNOs is unconventional: it involves a simultaneous regression-classification task and emphasizes the role of statistics in ensembles of NOs. We comment on the merits and limitations of the approach and its potential as a new methodology in Theoretical Physics.

We introduce an improved truncation scheme with an 'OPE tail' approximation and use it to reproduce the 'bootstrability' results of Cavaglià et al. for the OPE-coefficients squared of the first three unprotected operators. For example, for the first OPE-coefficient squared at 't Hooft coupling $(4π)^2$, linear-functional methods with two sum rules from integrated correlators give the rigorous result $0.294014873 \pm 4.88 \cdot 10^{-8}$, whereas our methods give with machine-precision computations $0.294014228 \pm 6.77 \cdot 10^{-7}$. For our numerical searches, we benchmark the Reinforcement Learning Soft Actor-Critic algorithm against an Interior Point Method algorithm (IPOPT) and comment on the merits of each algorithm.

Operators with integer scaling dimensions in even-dimensional conformal field theories exhibit well-known type-B Weyl anomalies. In general, these anomalies depend non-trivially on exactly marginal couplings. We study the corresponding fully covariantised anomaly functional on conformal manifolds in several examples. We show that a natural consequence of the Wess-Zumino consistency condition is that the anomalies are covariantly constant with respect to the exactly marginal couplings. The argument is general and applies even when the conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken on moduli spaces of vacua.

We study numerically the 6D (2,0) superconformal bootstrap using the soft-Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithm as a stochastic optimizer. We focus on the four-point functions of scalar superconformal primaries in the energy-momentum multiplet. Starting from the supergravity limit, we perform searches for adiabatically varied central charges and derive two curves for a collection of 80 CFT data (70 of these data correspond to unprotected long multiplets and 10 to protected short multiplets). We conjecture that the two curves capture the A- and D-series (2,0) theories. Our results are competitive when compared to the existing bounds coming from standard numerical bootstrap methods, and data obtained using the OPE inversion formula. With this paper we are also releasing our Python implementation of the SAC algorithm, BootSTOP. The paper discusses the main functionality features of this package.

Conformal manifolds in SCFTs are equipped with a holomorphic line bundle ${\cal L}$, which encodes the operator mixing of supercharges under marginal deformations. Using conformal perturbation theory and superconformal Ward identities, we compute the curvature of ${\cal L}$ at a generic point on the conformal manifold. We show that the Kähler form of the Zamolodchikov metric is proportional to the first Chern class of ${\cal L}$, with a constant of proportionality given by the two-point function coefficient of the stress tensor, $C_T$. In cases where certain additional conditions about the nature of singular points on the conformal manifold hold, this implies a quantization condition for the total volume of the conformal manifold.

We introduce the use of reinforcement-learning (RL) techniques to the conformal-bootstrap programme. We demonstrate that suitable soft Actor-Critic RL algorithms can perform efficient, relatively cheap high-dimensional searches in the space of scaling dimensions and OPE-squared coefficients that produce sensible results for tens of CFT data from a single crossing equation. In this paper we test this approach in well-known 2D CFTs, with particular focus on the Ising and tri-critical Ising models and the free compactified boson CFT. We present results of as high as 36-dimensional searches, whose sole input is the expected number of operators per spin in a truncation of the conformal-block decomposition of the crossing equations. Our study of 2D CFTs uses only the global $so(2,2)$ part of the conformal algebra, and our methods are equally applicable to higher-dimensional CFTs. When combined with other, already available, numerical and analytical methods, we expect our approach to yield an exciting new window into the non-perturbative structure of arbitrary (unitary or non-unitary) CFTs.

We investigate emergent gravity extending the paradigm of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The emergent graviton is associated to the (dynamical) expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor. We derive the general effective description of such dynamics, and apply it to the case where a hidden theory generates gravity that is coupled to the Standard Model. In the linearized description, generically, such gravity is massive with the presence of an extra scalar degree of freedom. The propagators of both the spin-two and spin-zero modes are positive and well defined. The associated emergent gravitational theory is a bi-gravity theory, as is (secretly) the case in holography. The background metric on which the QFTs are defined, plays the role of dark energy and the emergent theory has always as a solution the original background metric. In the case where the hidden theory is holographic, the overall description yields a higher-dimensional bulk theory coupled to a brane. The effective graviton on the brane has four-dimensional characteristics both in the UV and IR and is always massive.

We study a large class of such anomalies on the Higgs branch, where conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken, and compare them with their counterpart in the CFT phase. In Lagrangian theories, the non-perturbative matching of the anomalies can be determined with a weak coupling Feynman diagram computation involving massive multi-loop banana integrals. We extract the part corresponding to the anomalies of interest. Our calculations support the general conjecture that the Coulomb-branch type-B conformal anomalies always match on the Higgs branch when the IR Coulomb-branch chiral ring is empty. In the opposite case, there are anomalies that do not match. An intriguing implication of the mismatch is the existence of a second covariantly constant metric on the conformal manifold (other than the Zamolodchikov metric), which imposes previously unknown restrictions on its holonomy group.

We study type-B conformal anomalies associated with $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Coulomb-branch operators in 4D $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal field theories. When the vacuum preserves the conformal symmetry these anomalies coincide with the two-point function coefficients in the Coulomb-branch chiral ring. They are non-trivial functions of exactly-marginal couplings that can be determined from the $S^4$ partition function. In this paper, we examine the fate of these anomalies in vacua of the Higgs-branch moduli space, where conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken. We argue non-perturbatively that these anomalies are covariantly constant on conformal manifolds. In some cases, this can be used to show that they match in the broken and unbroken phases. Thus, we uncover a new class of data on the Higgs branch of 4D $\mathcal N=2$ conformal field theories that are exactly computable. An interesting application of this matching occurs in $\mathcal N=2$ circular quivers that deconstruct the 6D (2,0) theory on a torus. In that context, we argue that 4D supersymmetric localisation can be used to calculate non-trivial data involving $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS operators of the 6D theory as exact functions of the complex structure of the torus.

At zero temperature we recover the metastable state of Klebanov and Pufu directly in supergravity. At finite temperature we uncover a previously unknown pattern of mergers between fat or thin M5-brane states with the thermalised version of the metastable state. At sufficiently small values of the anti-brane charge a single fat-metastable merger follows the same pattern recently discovered for polarised anti-D3-branes in the Klebanov-Strassler solution in type IIB supergravity. We provide quantitative evidence that this merger is driven by properties of the horizon geometry. For larger values of the anti-brane charge the wrapped M5-brane solutions exhibit different patterns of finite-temperature transitions that have no known counterpart in the anti-D3 system in Klebanov-Strassler.

We find new and compelling evidence for the meta-stability of SUSY-breaking states in holographic backgrounds whose consistency has been the source of ongoing disagreements in the literature. As a concrete example, we analyse anti-D3 branes at the tip of the Klebanov-Strassler (KS) throat. Using the blackfold formalism we examine how temperature affects the conjectured meta-stable state and determine whether and how the existing extremal results generalize when going beyond extremality. In the extremal limit we exactly recover the results of Kachru, Pearson and Verlinde (KPV), in a regime of parameter space that was previously inaccesible. Away from extremality we uncover a meta-stable black NS5 state that disappears near a geometric transition where black anti-D3 branes and black NS5 branes become indistinguishable. This is remarkably consistent with complementary earlier results based on the analysis of regularity conditions of backreacted solutions. We therefore provide highly non-trivial evidence for the meta-stability of anti-branes in non-compact throat geometries since we find a consistent picture over different regimes in parameter space.

Starting from three-dimensional circular-quiver theories with vortex-loop-operator insertions, we recover the index of four-dimensional theories in the presence of codimension-two surface defects with (2,2) supersymmetry. The case of deconstruction with Wilson-loop insertions is discussed separately. We provide evidence that a certain prescription leads to the index of four-dimensional theories in the presence of surface defects with (4,0) supersymmetry. In addition, we deconstruct the index of four-dimensional gauge theories with codimension-one 1/2-BPS defects, starting from three-dimensional circular-quiver theories containing localised matter/gauge-field insertions at specific nodes. In this paper we prove a stronger statement, that the bundles of Higgs-branch superconformal primaries over N=2 superconformal manifolds are endowed with a flat connection, or equivalently that Higgs-branch superconformal primaries have vanishing Berry phases under N=2 exactly marginal deformations. This statement fits well with the proposed correspondence between the rigid structures of 2d chiral algebras and the sector of Schur operators in 4d N=2 theories. We also discuss the general interplay between non-renormalization theorems and the curvature of bundles of protected operators and provide a new simpler proof of the vanishing curvature of 1/2-BPS operators in 4d N=4 SYM theory that does not require the use of the 4d tt* equations.

We initiate a systematic analysis of the Berry phase in QFT using standard quantum mechanics methods. We show that a non-trivial Berry phase appears in many familiar QFTs. We study a variety of examples including free electromagnetism with a theta angle, and certain supersymmetric QFTs in two and four spacetime dimensions. We also argue that a large class of QFTs with rich Berry properties is provided by CFTs with non-trivial conformal manifolds. Using the operator-state correspondence we demonstrate in this case that the Berry connection is equivalent to the connection on the conformal manifold derived previously in conformal perturbation theory. In the special case of chiral primary states in 2d N=(2,2) and 4d N=2 SCFTs the Berry phase is governed by the tt* equations. As the size of the surface is varied we observe a transition from a volume law to an area law in agreement with expectations from non-locality in an open string field theory. Some of the specifics of this transition bear a qualitative resemblance with the behaviour of holographic entanglement entropy in non-commutative super-Yang-Mills theory.

Special emphasis is given to single-trace 2- and 3-point functions as well as a new class of observables that are scalars on the conformal manifold. These new observables are particular quadratic combinations of the structure constants of the chiral ring. At weak 't Hooft coupling we present perturbative results that, in principle, can be extended to arbitrarily high order. We obtain closed-form expressions up to the first subleading order. We present a general treatment of the leading order dynamics of the collective modes of charged dilatonic $p$-brane solutions of (super)gravity theories in arbitrary backgrounds. To this end we employ the general strategy of the blackfold approach which is based on a long-wavelength derivative expansion around an exact or approximate solution of the (super)gravity equations of motion. The resulting collective mode equations are formulated as forced hydrodynamic equations on dynamically embedded hypersurfaces. We derive them in full generality (including all possible asymptotic fluxes and dilaton profiles) in a far-zone analysis of the (super)gravity equations and in representative examples in a near-zone analysis. An independent treatment based on the study of external couplings in hydrostatic partition functions is also presented. Special emphasis is given to the forced collective mode equations that arise in type IIA/B and eleven-dimensional supergravities, where besides the standard Lorentz force couplings our analysis reveals additional couplings to the background, including terms that arise from Chern-Simons interactions. We also present a general overview of the blackfold approach and some of the key conceptual issues that arise when applied to arbitrary backgrounds.

General half-BPS A-type boundary conditions are formulated for N=2 supersymmetric field theories on compact 3-manifolds with boundary. We observe that under suitable conditions manifolds of the real A-type admitting two complex supersymmetries (related by charge conjugation) possess, besides a contact structure, a natural integrable toric foliation. A boundary, or a general co-dimension-1 defect, can be inserted along any leaf of this preferred foliation to produce manifolds with boundary that have the topology of a solid torus. We show that supersymmetric field theories on such manifolds can be endowed with half-BPS A-type boundary conditions. We specify the natural curved space generalization of the A-type projection of bulk supersymmetries and analyze the resulting A-type boundary conditions in generic 3d non-linear sigma models and YM/CS-matter theories.

We propose an open/closed string duality in general backgrounds extending previous ideas about open string completeness by Ashoke Sen. Our proposal sets up a general version of holography that works in gravity as a tomographic principle. We argue, in particular, that previous expectations of a supergravity/Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) correspondence are naturally embedded in this conjecture and can be tested in a well-defined manner. As an example, we consider the correspondence between open string field theories on extremal D-brane setups in flat space in the large-N, large 't Hooft limit, and asymptotically flat solutions in ten-dimensional type II supergravity. We focus on a convenient long-wavelength regime, where specific effects of higher-spin open string modes can be traced explicitly in the dual supergravity computation. For instance, in this regime we show how the full abelian DBI action arises from supergravity as a straightforward reformulation of relativistic hydrodynamics. In the example of a (2+1)-dimensional open string theory this reformulation involves an abelian Hodge duality. We also point out how different deformations of the DBI action, related to higher-derivative corrections and non-abelian effects, can arise in this context as deformations in corresponding relativistic hydrodynamics.

We formulate this theory as a 2d boundary theory with explicit ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetry that contains two superfields in the bi-fundamental representation of $U(N)\times U(M)$ interacting with the (2+1)-dimensional $U(N)_k\times U(N)_{-k}$ ABJM Chern-Simons-matter theory in the bulk. We postulate that the boundary theory exhibits in the deep infrared supersymmetry enhancement to ${\cal N}=(4,2)$, or ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ depending on the value of k. Arguments in favor of the proposal follow from the study of the open string theory of a U-dual type IIB Hanany-Witten setup. To formulate the bulk-boundary interactions special care is taken to incorporate all the expected boundary effects on gauge symmetry, supersymmetry, and other global symmetries.

We consider the exact coupling constant dependence of extremal correlation functions of ${\cal N} = 2$ chiral primary operators in 4d ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal gauge theories with gauge group SU(N) and N_f=2N massless fundamental hypermultiplets. The 2- and 3-point functions, viewed as functions of the exactly marginal coupling constant and theta angle, obey the tt* equations. In the case at hand, the tt* equations form a set of complicated non-linear coupled matrix equations. We point out that there is an ad hoc self-consistent ansatz that reduces this set of partial differential equations to a sequence of decoupled semi-infinite Toda chains, similar to the one encountered previously in the special case of SU(2) gauge group. This ansatz requires a surprising new non-renormalization theorem in ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal field theories. We derive a general 3-loop perturbative formula for 2- and 3-point functions in the ${\cal N} = 2$ chiral ring of the SU(N) theory, and in all explicitly computed examples we find agreement with the tt* equations, as well as the above-mentioned ansatz. This is suggestive evidence for an interesting non-perturbative conjecture about the structure of the ${\cal N} = 2$ chiral ring in this class of theories. We discuss several implications of this conjecture. For example, it implies that the holonomy of the vector bundles of chiral primaries over the superconformal manifold is reducible. It also implies that a specific subset of extremal correlation functions can be computed in the SU(N) theory using information solely from the S^4 partition function of the theory obtained by supersymmetric localization.

The connectivity index, defined as the number of decoupled components of a separable quantum system, can change under deformations of the Hamiltonian or during the dynamical change of the system under renormalization group flow. Such changes signal a rearrangement of correlations of different degrees of freedom across spacetime and field theory space. In this paper we quantify such processes by studying the behavior of entanglement entropy in a specific example: the RG flow in the Coulomb branch of large-N superconformal field theories. We find evidence that the transition from the non-separable phase of the Higgsed gauge theory in the UV to the separable phase of deformed decoupled CFTs in the IR exhibits sharp features in the middle of the RG flow in the large-N limit. The entanglement entropy on a sphere with radius $\ell$ exhibits the formation of a separatrix on the co-dimension-two Ryu-Takayanagi surface in multi-centered brane geometries above a critical value of $\ell$. We discuss how other measures of entanglement and separability based on the relative quantum entropy and quantum mutual information might detect such transitions between non-separable and separable phases and how they would help describe some of the key properties of the IR physics of such flows.

We report an exact solution of 2- and 3-point functions of chiral primary fields in SU(2) N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory coupled to four hypermultiplets. It is shown that these correlation functions are non-trivial functions of the gauge coupling, obeying differential equations which take the form of the semi-infinite Toda chain. We solve these equations recursively in terms of the Zamolodchikov metric that can be determined exactly from supersymmetric localization on the four-sphere. Our results are verified independently in perturbation theory with a Feynman diagram computation up to 2-loops. We compute exact 2- and 3-point functions of chiral primaries in four-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories, including all perturbative and instanton contributions. We demonstrate that these correlation functions are nontrivial and satisfy exact differential equations with respect to the coupling constants. These equations are the analogue of the $tt^*$ equations in two dimensions. In the SU(2) N=2 SYM theory coupled to 4 hypermultiplets they take the form of a semi-infinite Toda chain. We provide the complete solution of this chain using input from supersymmetric localization. To test our results we calculate the same correlation functions independently using Feynman diagrams up to 2-loops and we find perfect agreement up to the relevant order. As a spin-off, we perform a 2-loop check of the recent proposal of arXiv:1405.7271 that the logarithm of the sphere partition function in N=2 SCFTs determines the Kähler potential of the Zamolodchikov metric on the conformal manifold. We also present the $tt^*$ equations in general SU(N) N=2 superconformal QCD theories and comment on their structure and implications.

We study long-wavelength supersymmetric deformations of brane solutions in supergravity using an extension of previous ideas within the general scheme of the blackfold approach. As a concrete example, we consider long-wavelength perturbations of the planar M2-M5 bound state solution in eleven-dimensional supergravity. We propose a specific ansatz for the first order deformation of the supergravity fields and explore how this deformation perturbs the Killing spinor equations. We find that a special part of these equations gives a projection equation on the Killing spinors that has the same structure as the $κ$-symmetry condition of the abelian M5 brane theory. Requiring a match between supergravity and gauge theory implies a specific non-linear gauge-gravity map between the bosonic fields of the abelian M5 brane theory and the gravity-induced fluid-like degrees of freedom of the blackfold equations that control the perturbative gravity solution. This observation sheds new light on the SUGRA/DBI correspondence.

We review the blackfold description of the fully localized orthogonal M2-M5 intersection in eleven-dimensional supergravity which constitutes the direct gravitational analogue of the Howe-Lambert-West self-dual string soliton solution. We emphasize the preliminary implications of this description for the physics of the M2-M5 system and the novel research directions that it opens. This report contains several new results. As an extension of previous work we report new results on deformations of the M2-M5-KKW intersection that describe self-dual ring intersections. Extremal non-supersymmetric configurations of this type probe novel aspects of the M2-M5 system and allow us to explore further the merits and limitations of the blackfold description of black brane intersections. In particular, we provide an example of a situation where an effective description of extremal non-supersymmetric spike configurations is shown to capture correctly features of the exact solutions beyond its strict regime of validity. This observation hints at the existence of improved convergence properties in the underlying derivative expansion scheme without the necessary presence of supersymmetry.

We propose a new holographic model of Josephson junctions (and networks thereof) based on designer multi-gravity, namely multi-(super)gravity theories on products of distinct asymptotically AdS spacetimes coupled by mixed boundary conditions. We present a simple model of a Josephson junction (JJ) that exhibits the well-known current-phase sine relation of JJs. In one-dimensional chains of holographic superconductors we find that the Cooper-pair condensates are described by a discretized Schrodinger-type equation. Such non-integrable equations, which have been studied extensively in the past in condensed matter and optics applications, are known to exhibit complex behavior that includes periodic and quasiperiodic solutions, chaotic dynamics, soliton and kink solutions. In our setup these solutions translate to holographic configurations of strongly-coupled superconductors in networks with weak site-to-site interactions that exhibit interesting patterns of modulated superconductivity. In a continuum limit our equations reduce to generalizations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We comment on the many possible extensions and applications of this new approach.

Following an idea of Erkal, Kutasov and Lunin we elaborate on an effective description based on the abelian tachyon-DBI action which incorporates naturally the non-local physics of the complex scalar mode. We demonstrate its power in a context where an explicit worldsheet description of the open string dynamics exists --hairpin-branes in the background of NS5-branes. Our results are relevant for the holographic description of chiral symmetry breaking and bare quark mass in QCD and open string tachyon condensation in curved backgrounds.

We initiate a systematic scan of the landscape of black holes in any spacetime dimension using the recently proposed blackfold effective worldvolume theory. We focus primarily on asymptotically flat stationary vacuum solutions, where we uncover large classes of new black holes. These include helical black strings and black rings, black odd-spheres, for which the horizon is a product of a large and a small sphere, and non-uniform black cylinders. More exotic possibilities are also outlined. The blackfold description recovers correctly the ultraspinning Myers-Perry black holes as ellipsoidal even-ball configurations where the velocity field approaches the speed of light at the boundary of the ball. Helical black ring solutions provide the first instance of asymptotically flat black holes in more than four dimensions with a single spatial U(1) isometry. They also imply infinite rational non-uniqueness in ultraspinning regimes, where they maximize the entropy among all stationary single-horizon solutions. Moreover, static blackfolds are possible with the geometry of minimal surfaces. The absence of compact embedded minimal surfaces in Euclidean space is consistent with the uniqueness theorem of static black holes.

The theory, which regards the black hole as a black brane curved into a submanifold of a background spacetime -a blackfold-, can be formulated in terms of an effective fluid that lives on a dynamical worldvolume. Thus the blackfold equations split into intrinsic (fluid-dynamical) equations, and extrinsic (generalized geodesic embedding) equations. The intrinsic equations can be easily solved for equilibrium configurations, thus providing an efficient formalism for the approximate construction of novel stationary black holes. Furthermore, it is possible to study time evolution. In particular, the long-wavelength component of the Gregory-Laflamme instability of black branes is obtained as a sound-mode instability of the effective fluid. We also discuss action principles, connections to black hole thermodynamics, and other consequences and possible extensions of the approach. Finally, we outline how the fluid/AdS-gravity correspondence is related to this formalism.

Abstract:
We study a three-dimensional U(k) Yang-Mills Chern-Simons theory with adjoint matter preserving two supersymmetries. According to Acharya and Vafa, this theory describes the low-energy worldvolume dynamics of BPS domain walls in four-dimensional N=1 SYM theory. We demonstrate how to obtain the same theory in a brane configuration of type IIB string theory that contains threebranes and fivebranes…

We demonstrate how to obtain the same theory in a brane configuration of type IIB string theory that contains threebranes and fivebranes. A combination of string and field theory techniques allows us to re-formulate some of the well-known properties of N=1 SYM domain walls in a geometric language and to postulate a Seiberg-like duality for the Acharya-Vafa theory. In the process, we obtain new information about the dynamics of branes in setups that preserve two supersymmetries. Using similar methods we also study other N=1 CS theories with extra matter in the adjoint and fundamental representations of the gauge group.

Abstract:
We discuss the non-perturbative behavior of the U(1)_R symmetry in N=2 superconformal Chern-Simons theories coupled to matter in the (anti)fundamental and adjoint representations of the gauge group, which we take to be U(N). We discuss the non-perturbative behavior of the U(1)_R symmetry in N=2 superconformal Chern-Simons theories coupled to matter in the (anti)fundamental and adjoint representations of the gauge group, which we take to be U(N). Inequalities constraining this behavior are obtained as consequences of spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry and Seiberg duality. This information reveals a web of RG flows connecting different interacting superconformal field theories in three dimensions. We observe that a subclass of these theories admits an ADE classification. In addition, we postulate new examples of Seiberg duality in N=2 and N=3 Chern-Simons-matter theories and point out interesting parallels with familiar non-perturbative properties in N=1 (adjoint) SQCD theories in four dimensions where the exact U(1)_R symmetry can be determined using a-maximization.

We argue that the main feature behind novel properties of higher-dimensional black holes, compared to four-dimensional ones, is that their horizons can have two characteristic lengths of very different size. We develop a long-distance worldvolume effective theory that captures the black hole dynamics at scales much larger than the short scale. In this limit the black hole is regarded as a blackfold: a black brane (possibly boosted locally) whose worldvolume spans a curved submanifold of the spacetime. This approach reveals black objects with novel horizon geometries and topologies more complex than the black ring, but more generally it provides a new organizing framework for the dynamics of higher-dimensional black holes.

Infrared modifications of gravity have been proposed over the years as potentially useful phenomenological models. Massive (multi)-gravity is an interesting class of such theories. The true nature and the ultimate consistency of many of these models remains, however, unclear as one is frequently faced with important problems, e.g. classical instabilities and strong coupling problems which are hard to resolve without a known UV completion of the theory. In this note, we review a recent attempt to study some of these well known problems with the use of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this context, products of large-N conformal field theories coupled by multi-trace interactions in diverse dimensions are used to define quantum multi-gravity (multi-string/M theory) on a union of (asymptotically) AdS spaces. One-loop effects generate a small O(1/N) mass for the gravitons and provide non-trivial examples of massive multi-graviton theories.

The boundary gauge theory and the AdS/CFT correspondence are used as guiding principles to study and draw conclusions on some of the well known problems of massive gravity - classical instabilities and strong coupling effects. We find examples of stable multi-graviton theories where the usual strong coupling effects of the scalar mode of the graviton are suppressed. Our examples require a fine tuning of the boundary conditions in AdS. Without it, the spacetime background backreacts in order to erase the effects of the graviton mass.

We review some of the most striking properties of the phase diagrams of higher dimensional black holes in pure gravity. We focus on static black hole solutions with Kaluza-Klein asymptotics and stationary black hole solutions in flat Minkowski space. Both cases exhibit a rich pattern of interconnected phases and merger points with topology changing transitions. In the first case, the phase diagram includes uniform and non-uniform black strings, localized black holes and sequences of Kaluza-Klein bubbles. In the latter case, it includes Myers-Perry black holes, black rings, black saturns and pinched black holes.
