Recent studies indicate that Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 with Vision (GPT-4V) outperforms human physicians in medical challenge tasks. However, these evaluations primarily focused on the accuracy of multi-choice questions alone. Our study extends the current scope by conducting a comprehensive analysis of GPT-4V's rationales of image comprehension, recall of medical knowledge, and step-by-step multimodal reasoning when solving New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Image Challenges - an imaging quiz designed to test the knowledge and diagnostic capabilities of medical professionals. Evaluation results confirmed that GPT-4V performs comparatively to human physicians regarding multi-choice accuracy (81.6% vs. 77.8%). GPT-4V also performs well in cases where physicians incorrectly answer, with over 78% accuracy. However, we discovered that GPT-4V frequently presents flawed rationales in cases where it makes the correct final choices (35.5%), most prominent in image comprehension (27.2%). Regardless of GPT-4V's high accuracy in multi-choice questions, our findings emphasize the necessity for further in-depth evaluations of its rationales before integrating such multimodal AI models into clinical workflows.

Abstract:
In this paper, the existence of non-trivial time periodic solutions of first order mean field games is proved. It is assumed that there is a non-trivial periodic orbit contained in the Mather set. The whole system is autonomous with a monotonic coupling term. Moreover, the large time convergence of solutions of first order mean field games to time periodic solutions is also considered.

Research on continual learning (CL) mainly focuses on data represented in the Euclidean space, while research on graph-structured data is scarce. Furthermore, most graph learning models are tailored for static graphs. However, graphs usually evolve continually in the real world. Catastrophic forgetting also emerges in graph learning models when being trained incrementally. This leads to the need to develop robust, effective and efficient continual graph learning approaches. Continual graph learning (CGL) is an emerging area aiming to realize continual learning on graph-structured data. This survey is written to shed light on this emerging area. It introduces the basic concepts of CGL and highlights two unique challenges brought by graphs. Then it reviews and categorizes recent state-of-the-art approaches, analyzing their strategies to tackle the unique challenges in CGL. Besides, it discusses the main concerns in each family of CGL methods, offering potential solutions. Finally, it explores the open issues and potential applications of CGL.

As virtual personal assistants have now penetrated the consumer market, with products such as Siri and Alexa, the research community has produced several works on task-oriented dialogue tasks such as hotel booking, restaurant booking, and movie recommendation. Assisting users to cook is one of these tasks that are expected to be solved by intelligent assistants, where ingredients and their corresponding attributes, such as name, unit, and quantity, should be provided to users precisely and promptly. However, existing ingredient information scraped from the cooking website is in the unstructured form with huge variation in the lexical structure, for example, '1 garlic clove, crushed', and '1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened', making it difficult to extract information exactly. To provide an engaged and successful conversational service to users for cooking tasks, we propose a new ingredient parsing model that can parse an ingredient phrase of recipes into the structure form with its corresponding attributes with over 0.93 F1-score. Experimental results show that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on AllRecipes and Food.com datasets.

Hybrid analog and digital beamforming has emerged as a key enabling technology for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems since it can balance the trade-off between system performance and hardware efficiency. Owing to the strong ability of central control, cooperative networks show great potential to enhance the spectral efficiency of mmWave communications. In this paper, we consider cooperative mmWave MIMO systems and propose user association and hybrid beamforming design algorithms for three typical hybrid beamforming architectures. The central processing unit (CPU) of the cooperative networks first matches the service pairs of base stations (BSs) and users. Then, an iterative hybrid beamforming design algorithm is proposed to maximize the weighted achievable sum-rate performance of the mmWave MIMO system with fully connected hybrid beamforming architecture. Moreover, a heuristic analog beamforming design algorithm is introduced for the fixed subarray hybrid beamforming architecture. In an effort to further exploit multiple-antenna diversities, we also consider the dynamic subarray architecture and propose a novel antenna design algorithm for the analog beamforming design. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed hybrid beamforming algorithms achieve a significant performance improvement than other existing approaches and the dynamic subarray architecture has great advantages of improving the energy efficiency (EE) performance.

Cell-free networks are regarded as a promising technology to meet higher rate requirements for beyond fifth-generation (5G) communications. Most works on cell-free networks focus on either fully centralized beamforming to maximally enhance system performance, or fully distributed beamforming to avoid extensive channel state information (CSI) exchange among access points (APs). In order to achieve both network capacity improvement and CSI exchange reduction, we propose a partially distributed beamforming design algorithm for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free networks. We aim at maximizing the weighted sum-rate of all users by designing active and passive beamforming subject to transmit power constraints of APs and unit-modulus constraints of RIS elements. The weighted sum-rate maximization problem is first transformed into an equivalent weighted sum-mean-square-error (sum-MSE) minimization problem, and then alternating optimization (AO) approach is adopted to iteratively design active and passive beamformer. Specifically, active beamforming vectors are obtained by local APs and passive beamforming vector is optimized by central processing unit (CPU). Numerical results not only illustrate the proposed partially distributed algorithm achieves the remarkable performance improvement compared with conventional local beamforming methods, but also further show the considerable potential of deploying RIS in cell-free networks.

Matching the rail cross-section profiles measured on site with the designed profile is a must to evaluate the wear of the rail, which is very important for track maintenance and rail safety. So far, the measured rail profiles to be matched usually have four features, that is, large amount of data, diverse section shapes, hardware made errors, and human experience needs to be introduced to solve the complex situation on site during matching process. However, traditional matching methods based on feature points or feature lines could no longer meet the requirements. To this end, we first establish the rail profiles matching dataset composed of 46386 pairs of professional manual matched data, then propose a general high-precision method for rail profiles matching using pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN). This new method based on deep learning is promising to be the dominant approach for this issue. Source code is at https://github.com/Kunqi1994/Deep-learning-on-rail-profile-matching.

Rule-based classifier, that extract a subset of induced rules to efficiently learn/mine while preserving the discernibility information, plays a crucial role in human-explainable artificial intelligence. However, in this era of big data, rule induction on the whole datasets is computationally intensive. So far, to the best of our knowledge, no known method focusing on accelerating rule induction has been reported. This is first study to consider the acceleration technique to reduce the scale of computation in rule induction. We propose an accelerator for rule induction based on fuzzy rough theory; the accelerator can avoid redundant computation and accelerate the building of a rule classifier. First, a rule induction method based on consistence degree, called Consistence-based Value Reduction (CVR), is proposed and used as basis to accelerate. Second, we introduce a compacted search space termed Key Set, which only contains the key instances required to update the induced rule, to conduct value reduction. The monotonicity of Key Set ensures the feasibility of our accelerator. Third, a rule-induction accelerator is designed based on Key Set, and it is theoretically guaranteed to display the same results as the unaccelerated version. Specifically, the rank preservation property of Key Set ensures consistency between the rule induction achieved by the accelerator and the unaccelerated method. Finally, extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed accelerator can perform remarkably faster than the unaccelerated rule-based classifier methods, especially on datasets with numerous instances.

In this paper, we mainly focus on the existence of the viscosity solutions of \begin{equation*}
\left\{
\begin{aligned}
&H_1(x,Du_1(x),u_1(x),u_2(x))=0,\\
&H_2(x,Du_2(x),u_2(x),u_1(x))=0.
\end{aligned}
\right. \end{equation*} The standard assumption for the above system is called the monotonicity condition, which requires that $H_i$ is increasing in $u_i$ and decreasing in $u_j$ for each $i,j\in\{1,2\}$ and $i\neq j$. In this paper, it is assumed that $H_i$ is either increasing or decreasing in $u_i$, and may be non-monotone in $u_j$. The existence of viscosity solutions is proved when \[χ:=\sup_{u,v,w\in\mathbb R}\bigg|\frac{\partial_{u_2} H_1(x,0,0,u)}{\partial_{u_1} H_1(x,0,v,w)}\bigg|\cdot \sup_{u,v,w\in\mathbb R}\bigg|\frac{\partial_{u_1} H_2(x,0,0,u)}{\partial_{u_2} H_2(x,0,v,w)}\bigg|<1.\] Then we consider \begin{equation*}
\left\{
\begin{aligned}
&h_1(x,Du_1(x))+Λ_1(x)(u_1(x)-u_2(x))=c,\\
&h_2(x,Du_2(x))+Λ_2(x)(u_2(x)-u_1(x))=α(c).
\end{aligned}
\right. \end{equation*} It turns out that for each $c\in\mathbb R$, there is a unique constant $α(c)\in\mathbb R$ such that the above system has viscosity solutions. The function $c\mapsto α(c)$ is non-increasing and Lipschitz continuous. In the appendix, the large time convergence of the viscosity solution of evolutionary weakly coupled systems is proved when $χ<1$.

However, as a frequency-selective device, the RIS can only effectively provide tunable phase-shifts for signals within a certain frequency band. Thus, base-station (BS)-RIS-user association is an important issue to maximize the efficiency and ability of the RIS in cellular networks. In this paper, we consider a RIS-aided cellular network and aim to maximize the sum-rate of downlink transmissions by designing BS-RIS-user association as well as the active and passive beamforming of BSs and RIS, respectively. A dynamically successive access algorithm is developed to design the user association. During the dynamical access process, an iterative algorithm is proposed to alternatively obtain the active and passive beamforming. Finally, the optimal BS-RIS association is obtained by an exhaustive search method. Most of current works require a grasp sampling process to obtain grasp candidates, combined with local feature extractor using deep learning. This pipeline is time-costly, expecially when grasp points are sparse such as at the edge of a bowl. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end approach to directly predict the poses, categories and scores (qualities) of all the grasps. It takes the whole sparse point clouds as the input and requires no sampling or search process. Moreover, to generate training data of multi-object scene, we propose a fast multi-object grasp detection algorithm based on Ferrari Canny metrics. A single-object dataset (79 objects from YCB object set, 23.7k grasps) and a multi-object dataset (20k point clouds with annotations and masks) are generated. A PointNet++ based network combined with multi-mask loss is introduced to deal with different training points. The whole weight size of our network is only about 11.6M, which takes about 102ms for a whole prediction process using a GeForce 840M GPU. Two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) featuring atomically thin thickness and unique electronic structure with favorable bandgap has been widely recognized as an attractive new material for the development of the next generation of ultra-compact, light-weight optoelectronic components. In parallel, the recently emerged metasurfaces have demonstrated exceptional controllability over electromagnetic field within ultra-compact subwavelength dimension offering an unprecedented approach to improve the performance of optoelectronic devices. In this work, we are proposing an integration of metasurfaces with 2D semiconductor materials to achieve polarization sensitive, fast-response photodetectors. The reported devices are among the most compact hybrid MoS2-gap-plasmon metasurface detectors. Relying on the significant electromagnetic field confinement provided by the metasurfaces to enhance light absorption and to reduce the surface states, which generally limit the photo-generated carriers lifetime, we measured enhanced photocurrent and a fast detection speed. Moreover, the strong optical anisotropy introduced by the metasurfaces is used to efficiently control the polarization sensitivity of the photodetector. This work provides a feasible and effective solution to improve the performance of two-dimensional materials based photodetectors.

However, arbitrary beam sha** of VCSELs within a compact system still remains inaccessible till now. The emerging ultra-thin flat optical structures, namely metasurfaces, offer a powerful technique to manipulate electromagnetic fields with subwavelength spatial resolution. Here, we show that the monolithic integration of dielectric metasurfaces with VCSELs enables remarkable arbitrary control of the laser beam profiles, including self-collimation, Bessel and Vortex lasers, with high efficiency. A new digital image encryption method based on fast compressed sensing approach using structurally random matrices and Arnold transform is proposed. Considering the natural images to be compressed in any domain, the fast compressed sensing based approach saves computational time, increases the quality of the image and reduces the dimension of the digital image by choosing even 25 % of the measurements. First, dimension reduction is utilized to compress the digital image with scrambling effect. Second, Arnold transformation is used to give the reduced digital image into more complex form. Then, the complex image is again encrypted by double random phase encoding process embedded with a host image; two random keys with fractional Fourier transform are been used as a secret keys. At the receiver, the decryption process is recovered by using TwIST algorithm. Experimental results including peak-to-peak signal-to-noise ratio between the original and reconstructed image are shown to analyze the validity of this technique and demonstrated our proposed method to be secure, fast, complex and robust.

While most recent studies focused on traveling ionization zones in high power impulse magnetron sputtering, we show here fast camera images of magnetron discharges at very low current. A single drifting ionization zone is always present, even down to the threshold current of about 10 mA.

Abstract:
The discharges in high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) have been reported to consist of azimuthally inhomogeneous plasma with locally increased light emission. The luminous zones seemingly travel around the racetrack and are implicated in generation of the high ion kinetic energies observed in HiPIMS. We show that the inhomogeneities smooth out at high discharge current to yield azimut…

We show that the inhomogeneities smooth out at high discharge current to yield azimuthally homogeneous plasma. This may have implications for the spatial and kinetic energy distribution of sputtered particles, and therefore also on the thin films deposited by high power impulse magnetron sputtering.

Abstract:
The toroidal response is numerically investigated in a multifold double-ring metamaterials at the antibonding magnetic-dipole mode (i.e., antiparallel magnetic dipoles in one double-ring fold). This intriguing toroidal resonance in metamaterials is considered as a result of the magnetoelectric effect due to the broken balance of the electric near-field environment. We demonstrate that the toroidal…

We demonstrate that the toroidal dipole response in metamaterials can improve the quality factor of the resonance spectrum. In viewing of the design flexibility on the double-ring geometry, such toroidal metamaterials will offer advantages in application potentials of toroidal dipolar moment.
