We consider the following class of equations of (gKdV) type $$\partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + |u|^{p-1}u) = 0, \quad p\mbox{ integer},\quad t,x \in \mathbb{R}$$ with mass sub-critical ($2< p<5$) and mass super-critical nonlinearities ($p> 5$). We prove the existence of 2-solitary wave solutions with logarithmic relative distance, i.e. solutions $u(t)$ satisfying \[\left\|u(t)- \bigg( Q (\cdot - t - \log (ct)) + σQ (\cdot - t + \log (ct))\bigg)\right\|_{H^1}\to 0 \ \ \mbox{as} \ \ t\to +\infty,\] where $c=c(p)> 0$ is a fixed constant, $σ= -1$ in sub-critical cases and $σ= 1$ in super-critical cases. For the integrable case ($p=3$), such solution was known by integrability theory. This regime corresponds to strong attractive interactions. For sub-critical $p$, it was known that opposite sign traveling waves are attractive. For super-critical $p$, we derive from our computations that same sign traveling waves are attractive.

Commonsense knowledge representation and reasoning is key for tasks such as artificial intelligence and natural language understanding. Since commonsense consists of information that humans take for granted, gathering it is an extremely difficult task. In this paper, we introduce a novel 3D game engine for commonsense knowledge acquisition (GECKA3D) which aims to collect commonsense from game designers through the development of serious games. GECKA3D integrates the potential of serious games and games with a purpose. This provides a platform for the acquisition of re-usable and multi-purpose knowledge, and also enables the development of games that can provide entertainment value and teach players something meaningful about the actual world they live in.

With the development of Internet culture, cuteness has become a popular concept. Many people are curious about what factors making a person look cute. However, there is rare research to answer this interesting question. In this work, we construct a dataset of personal images with comprehensively annotated cuteness scores and facial attributes to investigate this high-level concept in depth. Based on this dataset, through an automatic attributes mining process, we find several critical attributes determining the cuteness of a person. We also develop a novel Continuous Latent Support Vector Machine (C-LSVM) method to predict the cuteness score of one person given only his image. Extensive evaluations validate the effectiveness of the proposed method for cuteness prediction.

In this paper, we propose using \textit{augmented hypotheses} which consider objectness, foreground and compactness for salient object detection. Our algorithm consists of four basic steps. First, our method generates the objectness map via objectness hypotheses. Based on the objectness map, we estimate the foreground margin and compute the corresponding foreground map which prefers the foreground objects. From the objectness map and the foreground map, the compactness map is formed to favor the compact objects. We then derive a saliency measure that produces a pixel-accurate saliency map which uniformly covers the objects of interest and consistently separates fore- and background. We finally evaluate the proposed framework on two challenging datasets, MSRA-1000 and iCoSeg. Our extensive experimental results show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches.

In this paper, we present an adaptive nonparametric solution to the image parsing task, namely annotating each image pixel with its corresponding category label. For a given test image, first, a locality-aware retrieval set is extracted from the training data based on super-pixel matching similarities, which are augmented with feature extraction for better differentiation of local super-pixels. Then, the category of each super-pixel is initialized by the majority vote of the $k$-nearest-neighbor super-pixels in the retrieval set. Instead of fixing $k$ as in traditional non-parametric approaches, here we propose a novel adaptive nonparametric approach which determines the sample-specific k for each test image. In particular, $k$ is adaptively set to be the number of the fewest nearest super-pixels which the images in the retrieval set can use to get the best category prediction. Finally, the initial super-pixel labels are further refined by contextual smoothing. Extensive experiments on challenging datasets demonstrate the superiority of the new solution over other state-of-the-art nonparametric solutions.

We prove that the large external magnetic field confines the particles to a compact set away from the boundary. This excludes the known singularities that typically occur due to particles that repeatedly bounce off the boundary. In addition to the confinement, we follow the techniques introduced by Glassey and Schaeffer, who studied the Cauchy problem without boundaries.

We investigate the global time existence of smooth solutions for the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto system of cross-diffusion equations of two competing species in population dynamics. If there are self-diffusion in one species and no cross-diffusion in the other, we show that the system has a unique smooth solution for all time in bounded domains of any dimension. We obtain this result by deriving global $W^{1,p}$-estimates of Calderón-Zygmund type for a class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations with self-diffusion. These estimates are achieved by employing Caffarelli-Peral perturbation technique together with a new two-parameter scaling argument.

Consider a symmetrical conflict relationship between the points of a point process. The Matérn type constructions provide a generic way of selecting a subset of this point process which is conflict-free. The simplest one consists in kee** only conflict-free points. There is however a wide class of Matérn type processes based on more elaborate selection rules and providing larger sets of selected points. The general idea being that if a point is discarded because of a given conflict, there is no need to discard other points with which it is also in conflict. The ultimate selection rule within this class is the so called Random Sequential Adsorption, where the cardinality of the sequence of conflicts allowing one to decide whether a given point is selected is not bounded. The present paper provides a sufficient condition on the span of the conflict relationship under which all the above point processes are well defined when the initial point process is Poisson. It then establishes, still in the Poisson case, a set of differential equations satisfied by the probability generating functionals of these Matérn type point processes. Integral equations are also given for the Palm distributions.

We present a novel summarization framework for reviews of products and services by selecting informative and concise text segments from the reviews. Our method consists of two major steps. First, we identify five frequently occurring variable-length syntactic patterns and use them to extract candidate segments. Then we use the output of a joint generative sentiment topic model to filter out the non-informative segments. We verify the proposed method with quantitative and qualitative experiments. In a quantitative study, our approach outperforms previous methods in producing informative segments and summaries that capture aspects of products and services as expressed in the user-generated pros and cons lists. Our user study with ninety users resonates with this result: individual segments extracted and filtered by our method are rated as more useful by users compared to previous approaches by users.
