First observation of top quark production in the forward region

Abstract:
Top quark production in the forward region in proton-proton collisions is observed for the first time. The $W\!+\!b$ final state with $W\toμν$ is reconstructed using muons with a transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, larger than 25 GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$. Top quark production in the forward region in proton-proton collisions is observed for the first time. The $W\!+\!b$ final state with $W\toμν$ is reconstructed using muons with a transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, larger than 25 GeV in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$. The $b$ jets are required to have $50 < p_{\rm T} < 100$ GeV and $2.2 < η< 4.2$, while the transverse component of the sum of the muon and $b$-jet momenta must satisfy $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV. The results are based on data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and $2.0$ fb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV by LHCb. The inclusive top quark production cross-sections in the fiducial region are $σ({\rm top})[7\rm{TeV}] = 239\pm53({\rm stat})\pm33({\rm syst})\pm24({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb}$ and $σ({\rm top})[8\rm{TeV}] = 289\pm43({\rm stat})\pm40({\rm syst})\pm29({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb}$. These results, along with the observed differential yields and charge asymmetries, are in agreement with next-to-leading order Standard Model predictions.

A study is presented of central exclusive production of $Υ(nS)$ states, where the $Υ(nS)$ resonances decay to the $μ^+μ^-$ final state, using $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment. The cross-section is measured in the rapidity range $2<y(Υ)<4.5$ where the muons are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range $2<η(μ^\pm)<4.5$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb$^{-1}$ and was collected at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ TeV and $8$ TeV. The measured $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ production cross-sections are \begin{eqnarray} σ(pp \to pΥ(1S)p) &=& 9.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.7\textrm{ pb and}\nonumber\\ σ(pp \to pΥ(2S)p) &=& 1.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.3\textrm{ pb},\nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The $Υ(1S)$ cross-section is also measured as a function of rapidity and is found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. An upper limit is set at 3.4 pb at the 95\% confidence level for the exclusive $Υ(3S)$ production cross-section, including possible contamination from $χ_b(3P)\toΥ(3S)γ$ decays.

We report a study of the suppressed $B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-$ and favored $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ decays, where the neutral $D$ meson is detected through its decays to the $K^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ and CP-even $K^+K^-$ and $π^+π^-$ final states. The measurement is carried out using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb$^{-1}$. We observe the first significant signals in the CP-even final states of the $D$ meson for both the suppressed $B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-$ and favored $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ modes, as well as in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed $D\to K^+π^-$ final state of the $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ decay. Evidence for the ADS suppressed decay $B^{-}\to DK^-π^+π^-$, with $D\to K^+π^-$, is also presented. From the observed yields in the $B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-$, $B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^-$ and their charge conjugate decay modes, we measure the value of the weak phase to be $γ=(74^{+20}_{-19})^{\rm o}$. This is one of the most precise single-measurement determinations of $γ$ to date.

A measurement of the production cross-section for $Z$ bosons that decay to muons is presented. The data were recorded by the LHCb detector during $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$. The cross-section is measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range $2.0 < η< 4.5$ with transverse momenta $p_{T} > 20$ GeV/c. The dimuon mass is restricted to $60 < M_{μ^{+}μ^{-}} < 120$ GeV/c$^{2}$. The measured cross-section is $$σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}} = (76.0 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.0 \pm 1.3) \, \text{pb}$$ where the uncertainties are due to the sample size, systematic effects, the beam energy and the luminosity. This result is in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The cross-section is also measured differentially as a function of kinematic variables of the $Z$ boson. Ratios of the production cross-sections of electroweak bosons are presented using updated LHCb measurements of $W$ boson production. A precise test of the Standard Model is provided by the measurement of the ratio $$\frac{σ_{W^{+}\rightarrowμ^{+}ν_μ} + σ_{W^{-}\rightarrowμ^{-}\barν_μ}}{σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}}} = 20.63\pm0.09\pm0.12\pm0.05,$$ where the uncertainty due to luminosity cancels.

The partons are reconstructed as jets with $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV and $2.2 < η< 4.2$. The sum of the muon and jet momenta must satisfy $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV. The fraction of $W+$jet events that originate from beauty and charm quarks is measured, along with the charge asymmetries of the $W\!+\!b$ and $W\!+\!c$ production cross-sections. The ratio of the $W+$jet to $Z+$jet production cross-sections is also measured using the $Z\toμμ$ decay. All results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

The resonant substructures of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decays are studied with the Dalitz plot technique. In this study a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb detector is used. The branching fraction of the $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decay in the region $m(\overline{D}^0π^{\pm})>2.1$ GeV$/c^2$ is measured to be $(8.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.40) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last arises from the normalisation channel $B^0 \to D^*(2010)^-π^+$. The $π^+π^-$ S-wave components are modelled with the Isobar and K-matrix formalisms. Results of the Dalitz plot analyses using both models are presented. A resonant structure at $m(\overline{D}^0π^-) \approx 2.8$ GeV$/c^{2}$ is confirmed and its spin-parity is determined for the first time as $J^P = 3^-$. The branching fraction, mass and width of this structure are determined together with those of the $D^*_0(2400)^-$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances. The branching fractions of other $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 h^0$ decay components with $h^0 \to π^+π^-$ are also reported. Many of these branching fraction measurements are the most precise to date. The first observation of the decays $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(500)$, $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(980)$, $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 ρ(1450)$, $B^0 \to D_3^*(2760)^- π^+$ and the first evidence of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(2020)$ are presented.

The data are described by an amplitude model that contains contributions from intermediate $K^*(892)^0$, $K^*(1410)^0$, $K^*_2(1430)^0$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances. The model also contains components to describe broad structures, including the $K^*_0(1430)^0$ and $D^*_0(2400)^-$ resonances, in the $Kπ$ S-wave and the $Dπ$ S- and P-waves. The masses and widths of the $D^*_0(2400)^-$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances are measured, as are the complex amplitudes and fit fractions for all components included in the amplitude model. The model obtained will be an integral part of a future determination of the angle $γ$ of the CKM quark mixing matrix using $B^0 \rightarrow D K^+ π^-$ decays.

Identification of jets originating from beauty and charm quarks is important for measuring Standard Model processes and for searching for new physics. The performance of algorithms developed to select $b$- and $c$-quark jets is measured using data recorded by LHCb from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV in 2011 and at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV in 2012. The efficiency for identifying a $b(c)$ jet is about 65%(25%) with a probability for misidentifying a light-parton jet of 0.3% for jets with transverse momentum $p_{\rm T} > 20$ GeV and pseudorapidity $2.2 < η< 4.2$. The dependence of the performance on the $p_{\rm T}$ and $η$ of the jet is also measured.

Angular correlations in $B^+\to X(3872) K^+$ decays, with $X(3872)\to ρ^0 J/ψ$, $ρ^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the $J^{PC}$ value of the $X(3872)$ meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. The $X(3872)$ is found to decay predominantly through S wave and an upper limit of $4\%$ at $95\%$ C.L. is set on the fraction of D wave.

In the Standard Model of particle physics, the strength of the couplings of the $b$ quark to the $u$ and $c$ quarks, $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, are governed by the coupling of the quarks to the Higgs boson. Using data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, the probability for the $Λ^0_b$ baryon to decay into the $p μ^- \overlineν_μ$ final state relative to the $Λ^+_c μ^- \overlineν_μ$ final state is measured. Combined with theoretical calculations of the strong interaction and a previously measured value of $|V_{cb}|$, the first $|V_{ub}|$ measurement to use a baryonic decay is performed. This measurement is consistent with previous determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ using $B$ meson decays to specific final states and confirms the existing incompatibility with those using an inclusive sample of final states.

The $D_s^{*\mp}$ mesons are reconstructed through the decay chain $D_s^{*\mp} \to γD_s^{\mp}(K^{\mp}K^{\pm}π^{\mp})$. The branching fraction relative to that for $B^0_s \to D_s^{*-} π^{+}$ is measured to be $0.068 \pm 0.005 ^{+0.003}_{-0.002}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Using a recent measurement of $BR(B^0_s \to D_s^{*-} π^{+})$ the absolute branching fraction of $B^0_s \to D_s^{*\mp} K^{\pm}$ is measured as ( 16.3 $\pm$ 1.2 (stat) $^{+0.7}_{-0.5}$ (syst) $\pm$ 4.8 (norm) ) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalisation channel.

Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2011 and 2012 by the \lhcb experiment, co\-rres\-pon\-ding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0\invfb, are a\-na\-lysed to search for the charmless ${B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0}$ decay. More than 600 ${\B^0 \to (π^+π^-)(π^+π^-)}$ signal decays are selected and used to perform an amplitude analysis from which the ${B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0}$ decay is observed for the first time with 7.1 standard deviations significance. The fraction of ${B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0}$ decays yielding a longitudinally polarised final state is measured to be $\fL = 0.745^{+0.048}_{-0.058} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.034 ({\rm syst})$. The ${B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0}$ branching fraction, using the ${\B^0 \to φK^*(892)^{0}}$ decay as reference, is also reported as ${\BF(B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0) = (0.94 \pm 0.17 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.09 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.06 ({\rm BF})) \times 10^{-6}}$.

The first observation of the $B^0_s\toη'η'$ decay is reported. The study is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to $3.0$ ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector. The significance of the signal is $6.4$ standard deviations. The branching fraction is measured to be $[3.31 \pm 0.64\,{\rm (stat)} \pm 0.28\,{\rm (syst)} \pm 0.12\,{\rm (norm)}]\times10^{-5}$, where the third uncertainty comes from the $B^{\pm}\toη' K^{\pm}$ branching fraction that is used as a normalisation. In addition, the charge asymmetries of $B^{\pm}\toη' K^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}\toφK^{\pm}$, which are control channels, are measured to be $(-0.2 \pm1.3)\%$ and $(+1.7\pm1.3)\%$, respectively. All results are consistent with theoretical expectations.

The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0 \mbox{ fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment. Evidence of signal is observed in the $q^2$ region below the square of the $J/ψ$ mass. Integrating over $15 < q^{2} < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4$ the branching fraction is measured as $d\mathcal{B}(Λ^{0}_{b} \rightarrow Λμ^+μ^-)/dq^2 = (1.18 ^{+ 0.09} _{-0.08} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.27) \times 10^{-7} ( \mbox{GeV}^{2}/c^{4})^{-1}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the normalisation mode, $Λ^{0}_{b} \rightarrow J/ψΛ$, respectively. In the $q^2$ intervals where the signal is observed, angular distributions are studied and the forward-backward asymmetries in the dimuon ($A^{l}_{\rm FB}$) and hadron ($A^{h}_{\rm FB}$) systems are measured for the first time. In the range $15 < q^2 < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4$ they are found to be $A^{l}_{\rm FB} = -0.05 \pm 0.09 \mbox{ (stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{ (syst)}$ and $A^{h}_{\rm FB} = -0.29 \pm 0.07 \mbox{ (stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{ (syst)}$.

The branching fraction relative to the $B^0\rightarrow ψ(2S) K^+ π^-$ decay mode is measured to be \begin{equation} \frac{{\cal B}(\overline{B}^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) K^+ π^-)}{{\cal B}(B^0
\rightarrow ψ(2S) K^+ π^-)} = 5.38 \pm 0.36 (stat) \pm 0.22 (syst) \pm 0.31 \, (f_s/f_d) \, \%,\nonumber \end{equation} where $f_s/f_d$ indicates the uncertainty due to the ratio of probabilities for a $b$ quark to hadronise into a $B_s^0$ or $B^0$ meson. Using an amplitude analysis, the fraction of decays proceeding via an intermediate $K^*(892)^0$ meson is measured to be $0.645 \pm 0.049 (stat) \pm 0.049 (syst)$ and its longitudinal polarisation fraction is $0.524 \pm 0.056 (stat) \pm 0.029 (syst)$. The relative branching fraction for this component is determined to be \begin{equation} \frac{{\cal B}(\overline{B}^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) K^*(892)^0)}{{\cal B}(B^0

Measurements are presented of the $CP$ violation observables $S$ and $C$ in the decays of $B^0$ and $\overline{B}{}^0$ mesons to the $J/ψK^0_S$ final state. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8\,\text{TeV}$. The analysis of the time evolution of $41500$ $B^0$ and $\overline{B}{}^0$ decays yields $S = 0.731 \pm 0.035 \, \text{(stat)} \pm 0.020 \,\text{(syst)}$ and $C = -0.038 \pm 0.032 \, \text{(stat)} \pm 0.005\,\text{(syst)}$. In the Standard Model, $S$ equals $\sin(2β)$ to a good level of precision. The values are consistent with the current world averages and with the Standard Model expectations.

The results are obtained using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions recorded with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The results on the CP asymmetries are $A_{ΔΓ}(B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0) = 0.49_{-0.65}^{+0.77}(stat) \pm 0.06(syst)$, $C_{\rm dir}(B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0) = -0.28 \pm 0.41(stat) \pm 0.08(syst)$ and $S_{\rm mix}(B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0) = -0.08 \pm 0.40(stat) \pm 0.08(syst)$. The ratio $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0)/\mathcal{B}(B_d^0\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^0)$ is measured to be $0.0431 \pm 0.0017(stat) \pm 0.0012(syst) \pm 0.0025(f_s/f_d)$, where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of the $B_s^0$ and $B_d^0$ production fractions.

An angular analysis of the decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}\bar{K}{}^{*0}$ is performed using $pp$ collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0$ ${fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. A combined angular and mass analysis separates six helicity amplitudes and allows the measurement of the longitudinal polarisation fraction $f_L = 0.201 \pm 0.057 {(stat.)} \pm 0.040{(syst.)}$ for the $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^*(892)^0 \bar{K}{}^*(892)^0$ decay. A large scalar contribution from the $K^{*}_{0}(1430)$ and $K^{*}_{0}(800)$ resonances is found, allowing the determination of additional $CP$ asymmetries. Triple product and direct $CP$ asymmetries are determined to be compatible with the Standard Model expectations. The branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow K^*(892)^0 \bar{K}{}^*(892)^0)$ is measured to be $(10.8 \pm 2.1 {\ \rm (stat.)} \pm 1.4 {\ \rm (syst.)} \pm 0.6 \ (f_d/f_s) ) \times 10^{-6}$.

An amplitude analysis of the resonant structure of the $B^{-}\to D^{+}K^{-}π^{-}$ decay is used to measure the contributions from quasi-two-body $B^{-}\to D_{0}^{*}(2400)^{0}K^{-}$, $B^{-}\to D_{2}^{*}(2460)^{0}K^{-}$, and $B^{-}\to D_{J}^{*}(2760)^{0}K^{-}$ decays, as well as from nonresonant sources. The $D_{J}^{*}(2760)^{0}$ resonance is determined to have spin~1.

A measurement of the cross-section for Z-boson production in the forward region of pp collisions at 8TeV centre-of-mass energy is presented. The measurement is based on a sample of $\rm Z\rightarrow e^+e^-$ decays reconstructed using the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0fb$^{-1}$. The acceptance is defined by the requirements $2.0<η<4.5$ and $p_{\rm T}>20$GeV for the pseudorapidities and transverse momenta of the leptons. Their invariant mass is required to lie in the range 60--120GeV. The cross-section is determined to be $$ σ({\rm pp\to Z\to e^+e^-})=93.81\pm0.41({\rm stat})\pm1.48({\rm syst})\pm1.14({\rm lumi})\;{\rm pb}\,,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second reflects all systematic effects apart from that arising from the luminosity, which is given as the third uncertainty. Differential cross-sections are presented as functions of the Z-boson rapidity and of the angular variable $φ^*$, which is related to the Z-boson transverse momentum.

A_Γ(K^-K^+) = (-0.134 \pm 0.077 \; {}^{+0.026}_{-0.034})\% \,
A_Γ(π^-π^+) = (-0.092\pm 0.145 \; {}^{+0.025}_{-0.033})\% \, \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with previous measurements and with the hypothesis of no indirect $CP$ violation in $D^0$ decays.

An angular analysis of the $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0} e^+ e^-$ decay is performed using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 ${\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV during 2011 and 2012. For the first time several observables are measured in the dielectron mass squared ($q^2$) interval between 0.002 and 1.120${\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V^2\!/}c^4}$. The angular observables $F_{\mathrm{L}}$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Re}}$ which are related to the $K^{*0}$ polarisation and to the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, are measured to be $F_{\mathrm{L}}= 0.16 \pm 0.06 \pm0.03$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Re}} = 0.10 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.05$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The angular observables $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)}$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Im}}$ which are sensitive to the photon polarisation in this $q^2$ range, are found to be $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)} = -0.23 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.05$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Im}} =0.14 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.05$. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions.

A search for the rare decays $B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ and $B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ is performed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Decay candidates with pion pairs that have invariant mass in the range 0.5-1.3 GeV/$c^2$ and with muon pairs that do not originate from a resonance are considered. The first observation of the decay $B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ and the first evidence of the decay $B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ are obtained and the branching fractions, restricted to the dipion-mass range considered, are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-)=(8.6\pm 1.5\,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.7\,({\rm syst})\pm 0.7\,({\rm norm}))\times 10^{-8}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-)=(2.11\pm 0.51\,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.15\,({\rm syst})\pm 0.16\,({\rm norm}) )\times 10^{-8}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the decay $B^0\to J/ψ(\to μ^+μ^-)K^*(890)^0(\to K^+π^-)$, used as a normalisation.

The LHCb detector is a forward spectrometer at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The experiment is designed for precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of beauty and charm hadrons. In this paper the performance of the various LHCb sub-detectors and the trigger system are described, using data taken from 2010 to 2012. It is shown that the design criteria of the experiment have been met. The excellent performance of the detector has allowed the LHCb collaboration to publish a wide range of physics results, demonstrating LHCb's unique role, both as a heavy flavour experiment and as a general purpose detector in the forward region.

No excess above the background is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section as a function of the long-lived particle mass and lifetime.

Extrapolation to the full phase space, using PYTHIA 6, yields $σ_{\rm inel} = 66.9 \pm 2.9 \pm 4.4$ mb, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second is due to the extrapolation.

$$τ_{B_c^+} = 513.4 \pm 11.0 \pm 5.7fs,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content $bds$ are expected in this mass region: the spin-parity $J^P = \frac{1}{2}^+$ and $J^P=\frac{3}{2}^+$ states, denoted $Ξ_b^{\prime -}$ and $Ξ_b^{*-}$. Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass differences and the width of the heavier state to be
$m(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 3.653 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.006$ MeV$/c^2$,
$m(Ξ_b^{*-}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 23.96 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.06$ MeV$/c^2$,
$Γ(Ξ_b^{*-}) = 1.65 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.10$ MeV, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The width of the lighter state is consistent with zero, and we place an upper limit of $Γ(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) < 0.08$ MeV at 95% confidence level. Relative production rates of these states are also reported.

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

In a sample of 96 000 $B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^-$ decays, the $CP$-violating phase $φ_s$ is measured, as well as the decay widths $Γ_{L}$ and $Γ_{H}$ of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the $B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0$ system. The values obtained are $φ_s = -0.058 \pm 0.049 \pm 0.006$ rad, $Γ_s \equiv (Γ_{L}+Γ_{H})/2 = 0.6603 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0015$ps$^{-1}$, and$ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_{L} - Γ_{H} = 0.0805 \pm 0.0091 \pm 0.0032$ps$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of those quantities to date. A combined analysis with $B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays gives $φ_s = -0.010 \pm 0.039 $rad. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. For the first time the phase $φ_s$ is measured independently for each polarisation state of the $K^+K^- $ system and shows no evidence for polarisation dependence.

Time-dependent CP violation is measured in the $B^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ channel for each $π^+π^-$ resonant final state using data collected with an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ in $pp$ collisions using the LHCb detector. The final state with the largest rate, $J/ψρ^0(770)$, is used to measure the CP-violating angle $2β^{\rm eff}$ to be $(41.7\pm 9.6_{-6.3}^{+2.8})^{\circ}$. This result can be used to limit the size of penguin amplitude contributions to CP violation measurements in, for example, $B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψφ$ decays. Assuming approximate SU(3) flavour symmetry and neglecting higher order diagrams, the shift in the CP-violating phase $φ_s$ is limited to be within the interval [$-1.05^\circ$, +$1.18^\circ$] at 95% confidence level. Changes to the limit due to SU(3) symmetry breaking effects are also discussed.

Both muons and jets are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range $2.0 < η< 4.5$. The results are based on data corresponding to $1.0{\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ recorded in 2011 with the LHCb detector. The measurement of the Z+b-jet cross-section is normalized to the Z+jet cross-section. The measured cross-sections are \begin{equation*} σ(\text{$\text{Z}/γ^*(μ^{+}μ^{-})$+b-jet}) = 295 \pm 60~(\text{stat}) \pm 51~(\text{syst}) \pm 10~(\text{lumi}) {\,\mbox{fb}} \end{equation*} for ${p_{\rm T}}$(jet)$>10{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$, and \begin{equation*} σ(\text{$\text{Z}/γ^*(μ^{+}μ^{-})$+b-jet}) = 128 \pm 36~(\text{stat}) \pm 22~(\text{syst}) \pm 5~(\text{lumi}) {\,\mbox{fb}} \end{equation*} for ${p_{\rm T}}$(jet)$>20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$.

A study of $B^0$~and $B^0_s$ meson decays into $J/ψη$~and $J/ψη^{\prime}$ final states is performed using a data set of proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to 3.0fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The decay $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime}$ is observed for thefirst time. The following ratios of branching fractions are measured: $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})} = (2.28\pm0.65\,(stat)\,\pm0.10\,(syst)\,\pm0.13\,(f_{s}/f_{d}))\times10^{-2},$$ $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη)}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη)} = (1.85\pm0.61\,(stat)\,\pm0.09\,(syst)\,\pm0.11\,(f_{s}/f_{d}))\times10^{-2},$$ where the third uncertainty is related to the present knowledge of $f_{s}/f_{d}$, the ratio between the probabilities for a $b$ quark to form a $B^0_s$ or $B^0$ meson. The branching fraction ratios are used to determine the parameters of $η-η^{\prime}$ meson mixing. In addition, the first evidence for the decay $B^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) η^{\prime}$ is reported, and the relative branching fraction is measured,

where the third uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$~mesons.

Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV, the world's best sensitivity to CP violation in this decay is obtained. The data are found to be consistent with the hypothesis of CP symmetry with a p-value of (2.6 +/- 0.5)%.

Measuring cross-sections at the LHC requires the luminosity to be determined accurately at each centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$. In this paper results are reported from the luminosity calibrations carried out at the LHC interaction point 8 with the LHCb detector for $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76, 7 and 8 TeV (proton-proton collisions) and for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV (proton-lead collisions). Both the "van der Meer scan" and "beam-gas imaging" luminosity calibration methods were employed. It is observed that the beam density profile cannot always be described by a function that is factorizable in the two transverse coordinates. The introduction of a two-dimensional description of the beams improves significantly the consistency of the results. For proton-proton interactions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV a relative precision of the luminosity calibration of 1.47% is obtained using van der Meer scans and 1.43% using beam-gas imaging, resulting in a combined precision of 1.12%. Applying the calibration to the full data set determines the luminosity with a precision of 1.16%. This represents the most precise luminosity measurement achieved so far at a bunched-beam hadron collider.

The $CP$ asymmetry is measured to be $a_{\rm sl}^d = (-0.02 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.30)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the most precise measurement of $a_{\rm sl}^d$ to date and is consistent with the prediction from the Standard Model.

We report on measurements of the mass and lifetime of the Xi_b^- baryon using about 1800 Xi_b^- decays reconstructed in a proton-proton collision data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The decays are reconstructed in the Xi_b^- --> Xi_c^0 pi^-, Xi_c^0 --> pK-K-pi+ channel and the mass and lifetime are measured using the Lambda_b^0 --> Lambda_c^+ pi- mode as a reference. We measure M(Xi_b^-) - M(Lambda_b^0) = 178.36 +- 0.46 +- 0.16 MeV/c^2 and tau(Xi_b^-)/tau(Lambda_b^0) = 1.089 +- 0.026 +- 0.011, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These results lead to a factor of two better precision on the Xi_b^- mass and lifetime compared to previous best measurements, and are consistent with theoretical expectations.

We present a measurement of the $CP$-violating weak mixing phase $φ_s$ using the decay $\bar{B}^{0}_{s}\to D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-}$ in a data sample corresponding to $3.0$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. An analysis of the time evolution of the system, which does not constrain $|λ|=1$ to allow for the presence of $CP$ violation in decay, yields $φ_s = 0.02 \pm 0.17$ (stat) $\pm 0.02$ (syst) rad, $|λ| = 0.91^{+0.18}_{-0.15}$ (stat) $\pm0.02$ (syst). This result is consistent with the Standard Model expectation.

The production of the $η_c (1S)$ state in proton-proton collisions is probed via its decay to the $p \bar{p}$ final state with the LHCb detector, in the rapidity range $2.0 < y < 4.5$ and in the meson transverse-momentum range $p_T > 6.5$ GeV/c. The cross-section for prompt production of $η_c (1S)$ mesons relative to the prompt $J/ψ$ cross-section is measured, for the first time, to be $σ_{η_c (1S)}/σ_{J/ψ} = 1.74 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.18 _{B}$ at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb$^{-1}$, and $σ_{η_c (1S)}/σ_{J/ψ} = 1.60 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.25 \pm 0.17 _{B}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV using 2.0 fb$^{-1}$. The uncertainties quoted are, in order, statistical, systematic, and that on the ratio of branching fractions of the $η_c (1S)$ and $J/ψ$ decays to the $p \bar{p}$ final state. In addition, the inclusive branching fraction of $b$-hadron decays into $η_c (1S)$ mesons is measured, for the first time, to be $B ( b \rightarrow η_c X ) = (4.88 \pm 0.64 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.67 _{B}) \times 10^{-3}$, where the third uncertainty includes also the uncertainty on the $J/ψ$ inclusive branching fraction from $b$-hadron decays. The difference between the $J/ψ$ and $η_c (1S)$ meson masses is determined to be $114.7 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.1$ MeV/c$^2$.

The production of $χ_b$ mesons in proton-proton collisions is studied using a data sample collected by the LHCb detector, at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$ TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$. The $χ_b$ mesons are identified through their decays to $Υ(1S)γ$ and $Υ(2S)γ$ using photons that converted to $e^+e^-$ pairs in the detector. The relative prompt production rate of $χ_{b1}(1P)$ and $χ_{b2}(1P)$ mesons is measured as a function of the $Υ(1S)$ transverse momentum in the $χ_b$ rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$. A precise measurement of the $χ_b(3P)$ mass is also performed. Assuming a mass splitting between the $χ_{b1}(3P)$ and the $χ_{b2}(3P)$ states of 10.5 MeV/$c^2$, the measured mass of the $χ_{b1}(3P)$ meson is $ m(χ_{b1}(3P))= 10515.7^{+2.2}_{-3.9}(stat) ^{+1.5}_{-2.1}(syst) MeV/c^2.$

The inclusive $C\!P$ asymmetries of these modes are measured to be $$ A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow K^{\pm} π^{+} π^{-})= +0.025 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.007 \\ A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow K^{\pm} K^{+} K^{-}) = -0.036 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.007 \\ A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{\pm} π^{+} π^{-})= +0.058 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.007 \\ A_{C\!P}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{\pm} K^{+} K^{-})= -0.123 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.012 \pm 0.007 $$ %% where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the $C\!P$ asymmetry of the $B^{\pm} \rightarrow J/ψK^{\pm}$ reference mode. The distributions of these asymmetries are also studied as functions of position in the Dalitz plot and suggest contributions from rescattering and resonance interference processes.

Using the latest LHCb measurements of time-dependent CP violation in the B^0_s -> K^+K^- decay, a U-spin relation between the decay amplitudes of B^0_s -> K^+K^- and B^0 -> π^+π^- decay processes allows constraints to be placed on the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle and on the B^0_s mixing phase -2β_s. Using the latest LHCb measurements of time-dependent CP violation in the B^0_s -> K^+K^- decay, a U-spin relation between the decay amplitudes of B^0_s -> K^+K^- and B^0 -> π^+π^- decay processes allows constraints to be placed on the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle and on the B^0_s mixing phase -2β_s. Results from an extended approach, which uses additional inputs on B^0 -> π^0π^0 and B^+ -> π^+π^0 decays from other experiments and exploits isospin symmetry, are also presented. The dependence of the results on the maximum allowed amount of U-spin breaking is studied. At 68% probability, the value γ= ( 63.5 +7.2 -6.7 ) degrees modulo 180 degrees is determined. In an alternative analysis, the value -2β_s = -0.12 +0.14 -0.16 rad is found. In both measurements, the uncertainties due to U-spin breaking effects up to 50% are included.
