We consider a Markovian model for the kinetics of RNA Polymerase (RNAP) which provides a physical explanation for the phenomenon of cooperative pushing during transcription elongation observed in biochemical experiments on Escherichia coli and yeast RNAP. To study how backtracking of RNAP affects cooperative pushing we incorporate into this model backward (upstream) RNAP moves. With a rigorous mathematical treatment of the model we derive conditions on the mutual static and kinetic interactions between RNAP under which backtracking preserves cooperative pushing. This is achieved by exact computation of several key properties in the steady state of this model, including the distribution of headway between two RNAP along the DNA template and the average RNAP velocity and flux.

Abstract:
In 1998, O'Loan et al. introduced a simplified bus route model to illustrate bus dynamics. In 1998, O'Loan et al. introduced a simplified bus route model to illustrate bus dynamics. However, due to fluctuations in passenger numbers, achieving an exact solution for the model's stationary state remains challenging, as these fluctuations can impact the buses' behavior. In this study, we present an exactly solvable model for the dual bus route model whose dynamics expand upon O'Loan et al.'s model. Using this dual model allows us to analyze bus route dynamics comprehensively. However, our model introduces additional parameters not previously considered by O'Loan et al. to account for neighboring effects, which have the potential to influence the average stationary current and velocity of buses. When the neighboring effect is weak, our model behaves similarly to O'Loan et al.'s bus route model. However, in the presence of a strong neighboring effect, our model exhibits intriguing characteristics.

In 2002, Chowdhury et al. introduced a simplified model aimed at depicting the dynamics of single-lane unidirectional ant traffic. Despite efforts, an exact solution for the stationary state of this ant-trail model remains elusive. The primary challenge arises from inherent fluctuations in the total amount of pheromone along the ant-trail. These fluctuations significantly influence ant movement. Consequently, unlike conventional models involving driven interacting particles, the average velocity exhibits non-monotonic behavior with ant density. In this study, we propose an exactly solvable model for ant traffic whose dynamics is based on the one in Chowdhury et al.'s model, and then discuss the circumstances under which the non-monotonic trend of average velocity arises.

However, how the quality of experience (QoE) is jointly affected by 1) varying perceptual quality and 2) interruptions is not well-understood. In this paper, we present the first attempt to quantitatively quantify the relative impacts of these factors on the QoE of streaming sessions. To achieve this purpose, we first model the impacts of the factors using histograms, which represent the frequency distributions of the individual factors in a session. By using a large dataset, various insights into the relative impacts of these factors are then provided, serving as suggestions to improve the QoE of streaming sessions.

Thanks to the abundance of Web platforms and broadband connections, HTTP Adaptive Streaming has become the de facto choice for multimedia delivery nowadays. However, the visual quality of adaptive video streaming may fluctuate strongly during a session due to bandwidth fluctuations. So, it is important to evaluate the quality of a streaming session over time. In this paper, we propose a model to estimate the cumulative quality for HTTP Adaptive Streaming. In the model, a sliding window of video segments is employed as the basic building block. Through statistical analysis using a subjective dataset, we identify three important components of the cumulative quality model, namely the minimum window quality, the last window quality, and the average window quality. Experiment results show that the proposed model achieves high prediction performance and outperforms related quality models. In addition, another advantage of the proposed model is its simplicity and effectiveness for deployment in real-time estimation. The source code of the proposed model has been made available to the public at https://github.com/TranHuyen1191/CQM.

Virtual Reality (VR), which brings immersive experiences to viewers, has been gaining popularity in recent years. A key feature in VR systems is the use of omnidirectional content, which provides 360-degree views of scenes. In this work, we study the human quality perception of omnidirectional images, focusing on different zones surrounding the foveation point. For that purpose, an extensive subjective experiment is carried out to assess the perceptual quality of omnidirectional images with non-uniform quality. Through experimental results, the impacts of different zones are analyzed. Moreover, nineteen objective quality metrics, including foveal quality metrics, are evaluated using our database. It is quantitatively shown that the zones corresponding to the fovea and parafovea of human eyes are extremely important for quality perception, while the impacts of the other zones corresponding to the perifovea and periphery are small. Besides, the investigated metrics are found to be not effective enough to reflect the quality perceived by viewers.

Recently, HTTP streaming has become very popular for delivering video over the Internet. For adaptivity, a provider should generate multiple versions of a video as well as the related metadata. Various adaptation methods have been proposed to support a streaming client in co** with strong bandwidth variations. However, most of existing methods target at constant bitrate (CBR) videos only. In this paper, we present a new method for quality adaptation in on-demand streaming of variable bitrate (VBR) videos. To cope with strong variations of VBR bitrate, we use a local average bitrate as the representative bitrate of a version. A buffer-based algorithm is then proposed to conservatively adapt video quality. Through experiments, we show that our method can provide quality stability as well as buffer stability even under very strong variations of bandwidth and video bitrates.
