Co-base superalloys are considered as promising high temperature materials besides the well-established Ni-base superalloys. However, Ni appears to be an indispensable alloying element also in Co-base superalloys. To address the influence of the base elements on the deformation behavior, high-temperature compressive creep experiments were performed on a single crystal alloy series that was designed to exhibit a varying Co/Ni ratio and a constant Al, W and Cr content. Creep tests were performed at 900 °C and 250 MPa and the resulting microstructures and defect configurations were characterized via electron microscopy. The minimum creep rates differ by more than one order of magnitude with changing Co/Ni ratio. An intermediate CoNi-base alloy exhibits the overall highest creep strength. Several strengthening contributions like solid solution strengthening of the $γ$ phase, effective diffusion coefficients or stacking fault energies were quantified. Precipitate shearing mechanisms differ significantly when the base element content is varied. While the Ni-rich superalloys exhibit SISF and SESF shearing, the Co-rich alloys develop extended APBs when the $γ^\prime$ phase is cut. This is mainly attributed to a difference in planar fault energies, caused by a changing segregation behavior. As result, it is assumed that the shearing resistivity and the occurring deformation mechanisms in the $γ^\prime$ phase are crucial for the creep properties of the investigated alloy series.

A systematic study of the compression creep properties of a single-crystalline Co-base superalloy (Co-9Al-7.5W-2Ta) was conducted at 950 °C, 975 °C and 1000 °C to reveal the influence of temperature and the resulting diffusion velocity of solutes like Al, W and Ta on the deformation mechanisms. Two creep rate minima are observed at all temperatures indicating that the deformation mechanisms causing these minima are quite similar. Atom-probe tomography analysis reveals elemental segregation to stacking faults, which had formed in the $γ\prime$ phase during creep. Density-functional-theory calculations indicate segregation of W and Ta to the stacking fault and an associated considerable reduction of the stacking fault energy. Since solutes diffuse faster at a higher temperature, segregation can take place more quickly. This results in a significantly faster softening of the alloy, since cutting of the $γ\prime$ precipitate phase by partial dislocations is facilitated through segregation already during the early stages of creep. This is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy analysis. Therefore, not only the smaller precipitate fraction at higher temperatures is responsible for the worse creep properties, but also faster diffusion-assisted shearing of the $γ\prime$ phase by partial dislocations. The understanding of these mechanisms will help in future alloy development by offering new design criteria.

Here we study a creep-deformed binary Ni-2 at.% Ta alloy. Atom probe tomography reveals a random distribution of Ta. Field ion microscopy, with contrast interpretation supported by density-functional theory and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, evidences a positive correlation of tantalum with vacancies. Our results support solute-vacancy binding, which explains improvement in creep resistance of Ta-containing Ni-based superalloys and helps guide future material design strategies.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are expected to be the next big step towards safer road transport, supporting applications to exchange information between vehicles. To develop novel applications for this area a high number of tests, considering all traffic situations, are demanded. However, it is unfeasible to reproduce these tests in real life, by the fact that any failure on the applications would cause severe impacts on transport system safety and could risk human lives. Thus, this paper presents the concept, model, and validation for InTAS, a realistic traffic scenario for Ingolstadt. InTAS road topology accurately represents Ingolstadt real road map. Elements such as buildings, bus stops, and traffic lights were added to the map. Twenty traffic lights systems were simulated according to the real program deployed on the traffic lights. Traffic demand was modeled based on the activitygen method, considering demographic data and real-traffic information. The city public transport system was also simulated accordingly to bus time-tables and their routes. The simulation step was implemented considering the best value for device.rerouting.probability, which was defined by evaluating InTAS output and real traffic data. The scenario was validated by comparing real-traffic data from 24 measurement points with InTAS simulation results.

The mechanical properties of the stoichiometric B2 $β$-phase of NiAl are well established, however the effect of off-stoichiometric composition on the fracture toughness has not yet been systematically studied over the entire composition range of 40-50% Al. Here we use microbending tests on notched cantilever beams FIB-milled from NiAl single crystals with an aluminized as well as an oxidation-induced composition gradient to determine the influence of the Al concentration on the mechanical properties. The fracture toughness is maximal for the stoichiometric composition. It decreases with increasing Ni-content in the Ni-rich composition range, where plastic deformation is observed to accompany the fracture process. In contrast, no plasticity is observed in Al-rich NiAl, which shows a nearly concentration-independent, low fracture toughness. The theoretical fracture toughness according to Griffith, however, shows only a very weak composition dependence in both, the Ni- and Al-rich composition range. The differences in fracture toughness could furthermore not be explained solely based on the different hardening contributions of Ni-antisites in the Ni-rich and structural vacancies in the Al-rich crystals. Atomistic fracture simulations show that crack propagation in NiAl takes place by the nucleation and migration of kinks on the crack front. The low fracture toughness of Al-rich NiAl can thus be understood by the dual effect of structural vacancies as strong obstacles to dislocation motion and as source of crack front kinks.

Molybdenum disilicide (MoSi$_2$) is a very promising material for high temperature structural applications due to its high melting point (2030 °C), low density, high thermal conductivity and good oxidation resistance. However, MoSi$_2$ has limited ductility below 900 °C due to its anisotropic plastic deformation behaviour and high critical resolved shear stresses on particular slip systems. Nanoindentation of MoSi$_2$ microalloyed with aluminium, niobium or tantalum showed that all alloying elements cause a decrease in hardness. Analysis of surface slip lines indicated the activation of the additional {1 1 0}<1 1 1> slip system in microalloyed MoSi$_2$, which is not active below 300 °C in pure MoSi$_2$. This was confirmed by TEM dislocation analysis of the indentation plastic zone. Further micropillar compression experiments comparing pure MoSi$_2$ and the Ta-alloyed sample enabled the determination of the critical resolved shear stresses of individual slip systems even in the most brittle [0 0 1] crystal direction.

Directly imaging all atoms constituting a material and, maybe more importantly, crystalline defects that dictate materials' properties, remains a formidable challenge. Here, we propose a new approach to chemistry-sensitive field-ion microscopy (FIM) combining contrast interpretation from density-functional theory (DFT) and elemental identification enabled by time-of-flight mass-spectrometry and data mining. Analytical-FIM has true atomic resolution and we demonstrate how the technique can reveal the presence of individual solute atoms at specific positions in the microstructure. The performance of this new technique is showcased in revealing individual Re atoms at crystalline defects formed in Ni during creep deformation. The atomistic details offered by A-FIM allowed us to directly compare our results with simulations, and to tackle a long-standing question of how Re extends lifetime of Ni-based superalloys in service at high-temperature.

Within this framework, the non--strange parts of the $ηN$ and f$_1 N$ couplings are modeled by means of triangular $a_0πN$, and $K K^* (Λ/Σ)$ vertices, while the strange ones partly proceed via Goldberger-Treiman relations, which have been concluded solely on the grounds of current universality. The suggested model explains the observed suppression of the $ηN$ coupling with respect to the constituent quark model expectations, and predicts the coupling of $f_1$ to the nucleon.

It is argued that the precise three flavor symmetry of hadrons is not SU(3)_F but rather U(4)_F restricted to SU(2)_{ud}*SU(2)_{cs}*U(1) and considered in the limit of frozen charm degree of freedom. Within this scheme the only hypercharge generator which is consistent with the Gell-Mann--Nishijima relation appears to be an element of the su(2)_{cs}*u(1) subalgebra as it contains the unit matrix generating the baryon number current. In considering now hypercharge axial transformations, the u(1) generator will give rise to the anomalous U(1)_A axial current and the resulting hypercharge axial current will be anomalous, too. The only anomaly free neutral strong axial current having a well defined chiral limit turns out to be identical (up to a constant factor) with the weak axial current, and the eta meson acquires features of a `masked' strange Goldstone boson. The eta N and f_1(1420)N couplings will now proceed via a purely strange isosinglet axial current and appear strongly suppressed relative to the predictions of the octet quark model. For this reason, loop corrections like the a_0πN and KK^*Y triangles to the respective eta NN and f_1(1420)NN vertices acquire importance. Here we calculate them in using effective lagrangians and show that the model developed is convenient for data description beyond the limits of applicability of chiral perturbation theory.

We show that the contact couplings of neutral pseudoscalar and axial mesons to the nucleon are proportional to $Δs$, the fraction of nucleon spin carried by the strange quark sea, and thus are strongly suppressed relative to the couplings of charged mesons to the nucleon. On the other side, recent high accuracy data on $η$ photoproduction at threshold reveal the need for non--negligibile $ηNN$ vertices, while fitting $\bar N N$ phase shifts by means of effective meson exchange potentials requires a substantial presence of $f_1$ mesons there. We here advocate the idea to attribute the couplings of neutral pseudoscalar and axial vector mesons to effective triangular diagrams containig non--strange mesons and demonstrate its usefulness in describing available data.
