Temporally distributed parent body accretion in the C reservoir of the solar system
Abstract: Accretion processes in protoplanetary disks produce a diversity of small bodies that played a crucial role in multiple reshuffling events throughout the solar system and in both early and late accretion of planets. Thermal history of the Erg Chech 002 parent body: Early accretion and early differentiation of a small asteroid

Late Accretion of Ceres-like Asteroids and Their Implantation into the Outer Main Belt

Orbifold splice quotients and log covers of surface pairs

A characterization of Lipschitz normally embedded surface singularities
Abstract: Any germ of a complex analytic space is equipped with two natural metrics: the outer metric induced by the hermitian metric of the ambient space and the inner metric, which is the associated riemannian metric on the germ. Lipschitz geometry does not determine embedded topological type
Abstract: We investigate the relationships between the Lipschitz outer geometry and the embedded topological type of a hypersurface germ in $(\mathbb C^n,0)$. It is well known that the Lipschitz outer geometry of a complex plane curve germ determines and is determined by its embedded topological type. We prove that this does not remain true in higher dimensions. Namely, we give two normal hypersurface germs… ▽ More

Rational polynomials of simple type
Abstract: We classify two-variable polynomials which are rational of simple type. These are precisely the two-variable polynomials with trivial homological monodromy.

Algorithms for polynomials in two variables
Abstract: Vladimir Shpilrain and Jie-Tai Yu have asked for an effective algorithm to decide if two elements of C[x,y] are related by an automorphism of C[x,y]. We describe here an efficient algorithm that decides this question and finds the automorphism if it exists. The algorithm is due to the second author, who described it in terms of Newton polygons, with C replaceable by a field of any characteristic… ▽ More

Unfolding polynomial maps at infinity
Abstract: We give a topological model for a polynomial map from $\C^n$ to $\C$ in the neighborhood of a fiber with isolated singularities. This is motivated out of the ``unfolding of links'' described earlier by the first author and Lee Rudolph. The topological model gives a useful encoding of the local and global monodromy for the map. The new ingredients --- the topology of the singularities at infinity… ▽ More

Immersed and virtually embedded pi_1-injective surfaces in graph manifolds
Abstract: We show that many 3-manifold groups have no nonabelian surface subgroups. For example, any link of an isolated complex surface singularity has this property. In fact, we determine the exact class of closed graph-manifolds which have no immersed pi_1-injective surface of negative Euler characteristic. We also determine the class of closed graph manifolds which have no finite cover containing an e… ▽ More

Nontrivial rational polynomials in two variables have reducible fibres
Abstract: It has been proved several times in the literature that a polynomial map from $C^2$ to $C$ with irreducible rational fibers cannot be a component of a counterexample to the Jacobian Conjecture. This note points out that this result is empty: it is implicit in 1980 work of Miyanish and Sugie that such a polynomial is equivalent to $f(x,y)=x$ by a polynomial automorphism of $C^2$.

Kleinian Groups Generated by Rotations
Abstract: We discuss which Kleinian groups are commensurable with Kleinian groups generated by rotations, with particular emphasis on Kleinian groups that arise from Dehn surgery on a knot.

Canonical decompositions of 3-manifolds
Abstract: We describe a new approach to the canonical decompositions of 3-manifolds along tori and annuli due to Jaco-Shalen and Johannson (with ideas from Waldhausen) - the so-called JSJ-decomposition theorem. This approach gives an accessible proof of the decomposition theorem; in particular it does not use the annulus-torus theorems, and the theory of Seifert fibrations does not need to be developed in… ▽ More

Hilbert's 3rd Problem and invariants of 3-manifolds
Abstract: This paper is an expansion of my lecture for David Epstein's birthday, which traced a logical progression from ideas of Euclid on subdividing polygons to some recent research on invariants of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. This `logical progression' makes a good story but distorts history a bit: the ultimate aims of the characters in the story were often far from 3-manifold theory. We start in sectio… ▽ More

Rationality problems for Chern-Simons invariants
Abstract: This paper makes certain observations regarding some conjectures of Milnor and Ramakrishnan in hyperbolic geometry and algebraic K-theory. As a consequence of our observations, we obtain new results and conjectures regarding the rationality and irrationality of Chern-Simons invariants of hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
