We are engaged in an investigation of the relationship between the properties of BCG candidates and X-ray characteristics of their host clusters for a flux-limited sample of ~250 ACO clusters from the ROSAT all-sky survey. We aim to search for the convergence scale of bulk streaming flows within the ~300 Mpc defined by this sample. X-ray selection provides significant advantages over previous optically selected samples. No R-band magnitude-structure correlation is present in this sample. Furthermore, no correlation between R-band magnitude of the BCG candidate and X-ray luminosity of the host cluster is evident. The resultant scatter of 0.34 mag. is larger than in (corrected) optically selected samples. Hence, attempts to recover Local Group peculiar velocity vectors with respect to inertial frames defined by such samples via standard candle methods may have limited sensitivity.

The electronic structure of spinel-type Cu_(1-x)Ni_xRh_2S_4 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0) and CuRh_2Se_4 compounds has been studied by means of X-ray photoelectron and fluorescent spectroscopy. Cu L_3, Ni L_3, S L_(2,3) and Se M_(2,3) X-ray emission spectra (XES) were measured near thresholds at Beamline 8.0 of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's Advanced Light Source. XES measurements of the constituent atoms of these compounds, reduced to the same binding energy scale, are found to be in excellent agreement with XPS valence bands. The calculated XES spectra which include dipole matrix elements show that the partial density of states reproduce experimental spectra quite well. States near the Fermi level (E_F) have strong Rh d and S(Se) p character in all compounds. In NiRh_2S_4 the Ni 3d states contribute strongly at E_F, whereas in both Cu compounds the Cu 3d bands are only ~1 eV wide and centered ~2.5 eV below E_F, leaving very little 3d character at E_F. The density of states at the Fermi level is less in NiRh_2S_4 than in CuRh_2S_4. This difference may contribute to the observed decrease, as a function of Ni concentration, in the superconducting transition temperature in Cu_(1-x)Ni_xRh_2S_4. The density of states of the ordered alloy Cu_(1/2)Ni_(1/2)Rh_2S_4 shows behavior that is more ``split-band''-like than ``rigid band''-like.

The new results are presented of the experimental study of KNbO3 and KTaO3 by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, soft X-ray emission and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. In particular, Nb M(4,5) spectra have been measured over a range of near-threshold excitation energies 206.5 - 240.6 eV, and Ta N(3) spectra over 399.4 - 420.4 eV at the Advance Light Source in Berkeley. These spectra were found to be strongly dependent on the excitation energy. Moreover, the O K(alpha) X-ray emission spectra in both compounds as well as the valence-band photoelectron spectra are brought to the binding energy scale and discussed in combination. The trends in the spectra are explained on the basis of first-principles band-structure calculations, with the dipole transition matrix elements taken into account.

3C 295, a cluster and its cooling flow at z=0.46

We present ROSAT HRI data of the distant and X-ray luminous (L_x(bol)=2.6^ {+0.4}_{-0.2} 10^{45}erg/sec) cluster of galaxies 3C 295. We fit both a one-dimensional and a two-dimensional isothermal beta-model to the data, the latter one taking into account the effects of the point spread function (PSF). For the error analysis of the parameters of the two-dimensional model we introduce a Monte-Carlo technique. Applying a substructure analysis, by subtracting a cluster model from the data, we find no evidence for a merger, but we see a decrement in emission South-East of the center of the cluster, which might be due to absorption. We confirm previous results by Henry & Henriksen(1986) that 3C 295 hosts a cooling flow. The equations for the simple and idealized cooling flow analysis presented here are solely based on the isothermal beta-model, which fits the data very well, including the center of the cluster. We determine a cooling flow radius of 60-120kpc and mass accretion rates of dot{M}=400-900 Msun/y, depending on the applied model and temperature profile. We also investigate the effects of the ROSAT PSF on our estimate of dot{M}, which tends to lead to a small overestimate of this quantity if not taken into account. This increase of dot{M} (10-25%) can be explained by a shallower gravitational potential inferred by the broader overall profile caused by the PSF, which diminishes the efficiency of mass accretion. We also determine the total mass of the cluster using the hydrostatic approach. At a radius of 2.1 Mpc, we estimate the total mass of the cluster (M{tot}) to be (9.2 +/- 2.7) 10^{14}Msun. For the gas to total mass ratio we get M{gas}/M{tot} =0.17-0.31, in very good agreement with the results for other clusters of galaxies, giving strong evidence for a low density universe.

We used archival ROSAT observations to investigate the X-ray surface brightness profiles of a sample of 26 clusters in the redshift range (0.04-0.06). For 15 of these clusters accurate temperature (kT>3.5 keV) were available from the literature. The scaled emission measure profiles look remarkably similar above ~0.2 times the virial radius r_V. On the other hand a large scatter is observed in the cluster core properties. We fitted a \betamodel (with and without excising the central part) to all the ROSAT profile to quantify the structural variations in the cluster population, unraveling a robust quadratic correlation between the core radius r_c and the slope parameter beta. We quantified the shape of each gas density profile by the variation with radius of the logarithmic slope, α_n. The bi-weight dispersion of α_n among the clusters is less than 20% for any given scaled radii above x=0.2. There is a clear minimum spread at x=0.3, which is related to the existence of a correlation between r_c and β. These ensemble properties are insensitive to the exact treatment of a possible central excess when fitting the profiles. On the other hand the scatter is decreased when the radii are scaled to r_V.
The regularity we found in the gas profiles at x>0.2 supports the existence of an universal underlying dark matter profile. It suggests that non gravitational heating is negligible for clusters with temperature above ~3.5keV. The very large scatter observed in the core properties favor scenario where Cooling Flows are periodically erased by merger events. Our results are consistent with the classical scaling M-T relation. Accordingly the spread in the reduced mass profiles derived from the hydrostatic isothermal betamodel is small.

Ewald summation and physically equivalent methods such as particle-mesh Ewald, kubic-harmonic expansions, or Lekner sums are commonly used to calculate long-range electrostatic interactions in computer simulations of polar and charged substances. The calculation of pressures in such systems is investigated. We find that the virial and thermodynamic pressures differ because of the explicit volume dependence of the effective, resummed Ewald potential. The thermodynamic pressure, obtained from the volume derivative of the Helmholtz free energy, can be expressed easily for both ionic and rigid molecular systems. For a system of rigid molecules, the electrostatic energy and the forces at the atom positions are required, both of which are readily available in molecular dynamics codes. We then calculate the virial and thermodynamic pressures for the extended simple point charge (SPC/E) water model at standard conditions. We find that the thermodynamic pressure exhibits considerably less system size dependence than the virial pressure. From an analysis of the cross correlation between the virial and thermodynamic pressure, we conclude that the thermodynamic pressure should be used to drive volume fluctuations in constant-pressure simulations.

In this paper, we consider matrices whose inverses are tridiagonal Z--matrices. Based on a characterization of symmetric tridiagonal matrices by Gantmacher and Krein, we show that a matrix is the inverse of a tridiagonal Z--matrix if and only if, up to a positive scaling of the rows, it is the Hadamard product of a so called weak type $\D$ matrix and a flipped weak type $\D$ matrix whose parameters satisfy certain quadratic conditions. We predict from these parameters to which class of Z--matrices the inverse belongs to. In particular, we give a characterization of inverse tridiagonal M--matrices. Moreover, we characterize inverses of tridiagonal M--matrices that satisfy certain row sum criteria. This leads to the cyclopses that are matrices constructed from type $\D$ and flipped type $\D$ matrices. We establish some properties of the cyclopses and provide explicit formulae for the entries of the inverse of a nonsingular cyclops. We also show that the cyclopses are the only generalized ultrametric matrices whose inverses are tridiagonal.

Stripped Spiral Galaxies as Promising Targets for the Determination of the Cepheid distance to the Virgo Cluster

The measurement of precise galaxy distances by Cepheid observations out to the distance of the Virgo cluster is important for the determination of the Hubble constant ($H_0$). The Virgo cluster is thereby often used as an important step** stone. The first HST measurement of the distance of a Virgo galaxy (M100) using Cepheid variables provided a value for $H_0=80(\pm 17)$ km/s/Mpc (Freedman et al. 1994). This measurement was preceeded by a ground based study of the Virgo spiral NGC4571 (Pierce et al. 1994) formally providing $H_0= 87\pm7$ km/s/Mpc. These determinations rely on the accuracy with which the position of this observed spiral galaxy can be located with respect to the Virgo cluster center. This uncertainty introduces a major error in the determination of $H_0$, together with the uncertainty in the adopted Virgo infall velocity of the Local Group. Here we propose the use of spiral galaxies which show clear signs of being stripped off their interstellar medium by the intracluster gas of the Virgo cluster as targets for the Cepheid distance measurements. We show that the strip** process and the knowledge of the intracluster gas distribution from ROSAT X-ray observations allow us to locate these galaxies with an at least three times higher precision with respect to M87 than in the case of other spirals like M100. The X-ray observations further imply that M87 is well centered within the intracluster gas halo of the Virgo cluster and that M86 is associated with a group of galaxies and a larger dark matter halo. The combination of these informations could enable us to locate the two stripped spiral galaxies quite precisely within the Virgo cluster and could greatly improve the determination of the Virgo cluster distance.

We present X-ray data on the distant cluster Cl0016+16 (z=0.5545) from ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations and use them to study the physics of the intracluster medium (ICM) and the dynamical state of the cluster. The surface brightness distribution is not only described by a spherically symmetric model but also by a two-dimensional $β$-model fit. Subtracting an elliptical model cluster as defined by the best fit parameters of the two-dimensional model we find significant residuals, indicating an additional, extended X-ray source within the cluster. This source, likely to be a merging subcomponent of the cluster, coincides with a peak in the weak lensing mass map of Smail et. al. (1995). In the course of this analysis we present a new approach to quantify the significance of substructure in cluster X-ray images dominated by Poisson noise and smoothed with a Gauss filter. We determine the radial mass profile integrated out to a radius of 3Mpc and find for the total mass of the cluster a value of $\sim 1.4-3.3 \times 10^{15}$ \msun and $\sim 4.5 \times 10^{14}$ \msun for the gas mass, yielding a gas-to-total mass ratio of 14-32\%. There is no significant radial dependence of the gas-to-total mass ratio in the cluster.

Abstract:
Multi-fragment decays of 129Xe, 197Au, and 238U projectiles in collisions with Be, C, Al, Cu, In, Au, and U targets at energies between E/A = 400 MeV and 1000 MeV have been studied with the ALADIN forward-spectrometer at SIS. By adding an array of 84 Si-CsI(Tl) telescopes the solid-angle coverage of the setup was extended to θ_lab = 16 degree. This permitted the complete detection of fragments from the projectile-spectator source.
The dominant feature of the systematic set of data is the Z_bound universality that is obeyed by the fragment multiplicities and correlations. These observables are invariant with respect to the entrance channel if plotted as a function of Z_bound, where Z_bound is the sum of the atomic numbers Z_i of all projectile fragments with Z_i \geq 2. No significant dependence on the bombarding energy nor on the target mass is observed. The dependence of the fragment multiplicity on the projectile mass follows a linear scaling law.
The reasons for and the limits of the observed universality of spectator fragmentation are explored within the realm of the available data and with model studies. It is found that the universal properties should persist up to much higher bombarding energies than explored in this work and that they are consistent with universal features exhibited by the intranuclear cascade and statistical multifragmentation models.

A Weak Gravitational Lensing and X-ray Analysis of Abell 2163

We report on the detection of dark matter in the cluster of galaxies Abell~2163 using the weak gravitational distortion of background galaxies, and an analysis of the cluster X-ray emission. We find that while the qualitative distributions of the cluster light and the dark matter are similar -- shallow and extended, with significant substructure -- the X-ray morphology shows a more regular overall appearance. We interpret the joint lensing and X-ray observations as a signature of a merger event in the cluster. We present new ROSAT/HRI data and reanalyze ROSAT/PSPC data, accounting for the effect of a varying background to determine the best fit parameters in the $β$-model formalism. We combine the surface brightness fits with two determinations of the radial temperature profile to determine the total mass. Although there are slight variations in the total mass determinations introduced by the uncertainties in the $β$-fit, the main contributor to the error arises from the uncertainties in the temperature determinations. Even though the morphologies of the dark matter/light and X-ray gas are quite different, we find that the total mass determined from the X-ray and weak lensing estimates are consistent with each other within the $2σ$ error bars, with the X-ray inferred mass a factor of $\simeq 2$ larger. However, as the lensing mass estimates are differential (the surface density at any point is determined relative to the mean in a control annulus), the shallow, extended nature of the mass profile biases the lensing inferred mass downwards. We estimate the correction for this effect and find very good agreement between the corrected lensing and X-ray results. We determine the gas mass fraction and find $f_g \simeq 0.07h^{-3/2}$ at all radii and a constant mass-to-light ratio of $M/L_V

We report on the X-ray properties of the exceptional X-ray cluster RXJ1347.5-1145 at z=0.451. We confirm that it is with a luminosity $L_X(bol)=2\times 10^{46}$ erg/s the most luminous X-ray cluster discovered to date. The mass of the cluster within 1.7 Mpc is $9.8%\pm1.1\times 10^{14} \msol$. A comparison of the central X-ray mass and the mass determined from a simple gravitational lens model shows a discrepancy of a factor of 2-3 with the X-ray mass being smaller. The temperature of the cluster is $9.3^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$~keV. We detect a strong FeK line corresponding to a metallicity of $0.33\pm0.10$ in solar units, which is an unexpectedly high value for a distant and hot cluster. There are several hints that the cluster contains an extremely strong cooling flow. With the usual assumptions we derive formally a mass accretion rate of more than 3000 $\msol$/yr indicating that this may be the largest cooling flow detected so far. To find these extreme properties in this distant cluster which can be taken as an indication of a well relaxed and old system is of high importance for the theory of formation and evolution of clusters.

The cluster A3627 was recently recognized to be a very massive, nearby cluster in a galaxy survey close to the galactic plane. We are reporting on ROSAT PSPC observations of this object which confirm that the cluster is indeed very massive. The X-ray emission detected from the cluster extends over almost 1 degree in radius. The X-ray image is not spherically symmetric and shows indications of an ongoing cluster merger. Due to the strong interstellar absorption the spectral analysis and the gas temperature determination are difficult. The data are consistent with an overall gas temperature in the range 5 to 10 keV. There are signs of temperature variations in the merger region. A mass estimate based on the X-ray data yields values of $0.4 - 2.2 \cdot 10^{15}$ \msu \ if extrapolated to the virial radius of $3 h_{50}^{-1}$ Mpc. In the ROSAT energy band (0.1 - 2.4 keV) the cluster emission yields a flux of about $2 \cdot 10^{-10}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ which makes A3627 the 6$^{th}$ brightest cluster in the ROSAT All Sky Survey. The cluster was missed in earlier X-ray surveys because it was confused with a neighbouring X-ray bright, galactic X-ray binary (1H1556-605). The large X-ray flux makes A3627 an important target for future studies.

The x-ray photoelectron valence band spectrum and x-ray emission valence-band spectra (Ti K _beta_5, Ti L_alpha, O K_alpha) of Bi4Ti3O12 are presented (analyzed in the common energy scale) and interpreted on the basis of a band-structure calculation for an idealized I4/mmm structure of this material.

We report on the detection of dark matter in the cluster Abell 2218 using the weak gravitational distortion of background galaxies. We find a highly significant, coherent detection of the distortion in the images of the background galaxies. The inferred 2D mass distribution has a peak that is coincident with the optical and X-ray centroid. The qualitative distributions of the cluster light, the X-ray emission and the dark matter are similar and the projected total mass, gas, and light surface densities are consistent with a $r^{-1}$ profile at distance of $r > 180^{\prime\prime}$ from the cluster cD galaxy. Using the weak lensing technique, we determine a lower bound for the total mass in A2218 of $(3.9 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{14}$~h$^{-1}$~M$_\odot$ within a fiducial aperture of radius 0.4~h$^{-1}$Mpc. The associated cluster mass-to-light ratio is $(440 \pm 80)$~h~$M_\odot/L_{\odot B}$. The mass estimated by the weak lensing method is consistent with that inferred from the X-ray data under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium and we derive an upper bound for the gas-to-total mass ratio at 400~h$^{-1}$kpc of $M_{gas}/M_{tot} = (0.04 \pm 0.02)$h$^{-3/2}$.

Discovery of an Arc System in the Brightest ROSAT Cluster of Galaxies

We report the discovery of two bright arcs in what turns out to be the brightest X--ray cluster in the ROSAT band ever observed, RXJ1347.5-1145. Its luminosity is $(6.2\pm0.6) \cdot10^{45}$erg s$^{-1}$ (in the range 0.1--2.4~keV). The arcs are most probably gravitationally lensed images of background galaxies. They were found serendipitously during our ongoing large--scale redshift survey of X--ray clusters detected by the ROSAT All Sky Survey. The arcs are almost opposite to each other with respect to the cluster centre, with a distance from it of about $35''$ ($=240 h^{-1}_{50}$ kpc), a radius that enables the probing of a rather large cluster volume. In this Letter we limit ourselves to the discussion of the general optical and X--ray features of this cluster and to the potential implications of the gravitational arcs. A more detailed discussion of the different mass estimates and of the cosmological implications for this exceptional object are left for future work based on more accurate optical and X--ray data, which are currently being collected.

We present results of ROSAT/PSPC and HRI observations of the AWM7 group of galaxies, which is a poor galaxy cluster and forms part of the Perseus-Pisces filament. The X-ray emission originates from intracluster gas at temperatures of 1.7 to 4.5 keV. The cluster obviously is elliptical with a position angle perpendicular to the position angle of the dominant elliptical galaxy NGC1129, which is offset from the cluster X-ray centre by 30 kpc. The analysis of the PSPC imaging and spectral data yield a gravitational mass of 2--5$\cdot10^{14}$\msun within a radius of 1.2 Mpc and a cooling flow with a mass deposition rate of up to 60--66 \msun y$^{-1}$.
