In this paper, we study a hyperelastic composite material with a periodic microstructure and a prestrain close to a stress-free joint. We consider two limits associated with linearization and homogenization. Unlike previous studies that focus on composites with a stress-free reference configuration, the minimizers of the elastic energy functional in the prestrained case are not explicitly known. Consequently, it is initially unclear at which deformation to perform the linearization. Our main result shows that both the consecutive and simultaneous limits converge to a single homogenized model of linearized elasticity. This model features a homogenized prestrain and provides first-order information about the minimizers of the original nonlinear model. We find that the homogenization of the material and the homogenization of the prestrain are generally coupled and cannot be considered separately. Additionally, we establish an asymptotic quadratic expansion of the homogenized stored energy function and present a detailed analysis of the effective model for laminate composite materials. A key analytical contribution of our paper is a new mixed-growth version of the geometric rigidity estimate for Jones domains. The proof of this result relies on the construction of an extension operator for Jones domains adapted to geometric rigidity.

Motivated by an application involving additively manufactured bioresorbable polymer scaffolds supporting bone tissue regeneration, we investigate the impact of uncertain geometry perturbations on the effective mechanical properties of elastic rods. To be more precise, we consider elastic rods modeled as three-dimensional linearly elastic bodies occupying randomly perturbed domains. Our focus is on a model where the cross-section of the rod is shifted along the longitudinal axis with stationary increments. To efficiently obtain accurate estimates on the resulting uncertainty of the effective elastic moduli, we use a combination of analytical and numerical methods. Specifically, we rigorously derive a one-dimensional surrogate model by analyzing the slender-rod $Γ$-limit. Additionally, we establish qualitative and quantitative stochastic homogenization results for the one-dimensional surrogate model. To compare the fluctuations of the surrogate with the original three-dimensional model, we perform numerical simulations by means of finite element analysis and Monte Carlo methods.

We study the large-scale behavior of a small-strain lattice model for a network composed of elastoplastic springs with random material properties. We formulate the model as an evolutionary rate independent system (ERIS). In an earlier work we derived a homogenized continuum model, which has the form of linearized elastoplasticity, as evolutionary $Γ$-limit as the lattice parameter tends to zero. In the present paper we introduce a periodic representative volume element approximation (RVE) for the homogenized system. As a main result we prove convergence of the RVE approximation as the size of the RVE tends to infinity. We also show that the hysteretic stress-strain relation of the effective system can be described with help of a generalized Prandt-Ishlinskii operator, and we prove convergence of a periodic RVE approximation for that operator. We combine the RVE approximation with a numerical scheme for rate-independent systems and obtain a computational scheme that we use to numerically investigate the homogenized system in the specific case when the original network is given by a two-dimensional lattice model. We simulate the response of the system to cyclic and uniaxial, monotonic loading, and numerically investigate the convergence rate of the periodic RVE approximation. In particular, our simulations show that the RVE error decays with the same rate as the RVE error in the static case of linear elasticity.

The presence of prestrain can have a tremendous effect on the mechanical behavior of slender structures. Prestrained elastic plates show spontaneous bending in equilibrium -- a property that makes such objects relevant for the fabrication of active and functional materials. In this paper we study microheterogeneous, prestrained plates that feature nonflat equilibrium shapes. Our goal is to understand the relation between the properties of the prestrained microstructure and the global shape of the plate in mechanical equilibrium. To this end, we consider a three-dimensional, nonlinear elasticity model that describes a periodic material that occupies a domain with small thickness. We consider a spatially periodic prestrain described in the form of a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient. By simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction, we rigorously derive an effective plate model as a Γ-limit for vanishing thickness and period. That limit has the form of a nonlinear bending energy with an emergent spontaneous curvature term. The homogenized properties of the bending model (bending stiffness and spontaneous curvature) are characterized by corrector problems. For a model composite -- a prestrained laminate composed of isotropic materials -- we investigate the dependence of the homogenized properties on the parameters of the model composite. Secondly, we investigate the relation between the parameters of the model composite and the set of shapes with minimal bending energy. Our study reveals a rather complex dependence of these shapes on the composite parameters.

In this paper, we study an elastic bilayer plate composed of a nematic liquid crystal elastomer in the top layer and a nonlinearly elastic material in the bottom layer. While the bottom layer is assumed to be stress-free in the flat reference configuration, the top layer features an eigenstrain that depends on the local liquid crystal orientation. As a consequence, the plate shows non-flat deformations in equilibrium with a geometry that non-trivially depends on the relative thickness and shape of the plate, material parameters, boundary conditions for the deformation, and anchorings of the liquid crystal orientation. We focus on thin plates in the bending regime and derive a two-dimensional bending model that combines a nonlinear bending energy for the deformation, with a surface Oseen-Frank energy for the director field that describes the local orientation of the liquid crystal elastomer. Both energies are nonlinearly coupled by means of a spontaneous curvature term that effectively describes the nematic-elastic coupling. We rigorously derive this model as a Γ-limit from three-dimensional, nonlinear elasticity. We also devise a new numerical algorithm to compute stationary points of the two-dimensional model. We conduct numerical experiments and present simulation results that illustrate the practical properties of the proposed scheme as well as the rich mechanical behavior of the system.

In mechanical systems it is of interest to know the onset of fracture in dependence of the boundary conditions. Here we study a one-dimensional model which allows for an underlying heterogeneous structure in the discrete setting. Such models have recently been studied in the passage to the continuum by means of variational convergence ($Γ$-convergence). The $Γ$-limit results determine thresholds of the boundary condition, which mark a transition from purely elastic behaviour to the occurrence of a crack. In this article we provide a notion of fracture in the discrete setting and show that its continuum limit yields the same threshold as that obtained from the $Γ$-limit. Since the calculation of the fracture threshold is much easier with the new method, we see a good chance that this new approach will turn out useful in applications.

This paper is about the homogenization of linear elliptic operators in divergence form with stationary random coefficients that have only slowly decaying correlations. It deduces optimal estimates of the homogenization error from optimal growth estimates of the (extended) corrector. In line with the heuristics, there are transitions at dimension $d=2$, and for a correlation-decay exponent $β=2$; we capture the correct power of logarithms coming from these two sources of criticality.
The decay of correlations is sharply encoded in terms of a multiscale logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI) for the ensemble under consideration --- the results would fail if correlation decay were encoded in terms of an $α$-mixing condition. Among other ensembles popular in modelling of random media, this class includes coefficient fields that are local transformations of stationary Gaussian fields.
The optimal growth of the corrector $φ$ is derived from bounding the size of spatial averages $F=\int g\cdot\nablaφ$ of its gradient. This in turn is done by a (deterministic) sensitivity estimate of $F$, that is, by estimating the functional derivative $\frac{\partial F}{\partial a}$ of $F$ w.~r.~t.~the coefficient field $a$. Appealing to the LSI in form of concentration of measure yields a stochastic estimate on $F$. The sensitivity argument relies on a large-scale Schauder theory for the heterogeneous elliptic operator $-\nabla\cdot a\nabla$. The treatment allows for non-symmetric $a$ and for systems like linear elasticity.

Nanochains of atoms, molecules and polymers have gained recent interest in the experimental sciences. This article contributes to an advanced mathematical modeling of the mechanical properties of nanochains that allow for heterogenities, which may be impurities or a deliberately chosen composition of different kind of atoms. We consider one-dimensional systems of particles which interact through a large class of convex-concave potentials, which includes the classical Lennard-Jones potentials.
We allow for a stochastic distribution of the material parameters and investigate the effective behaviour of the system as the distance between the particles tends to zero. The mathematical methods are based on $Γ$-convergence, which is a suitable notion of convergence for variational problems, and on ergodic theorems as is usual in the framework of stochastic homogenization. The allowed singular structure of the interaction potentials causes mathematical difficulties that we overcome by an approximation. We consider the case of $K$ interacting neighbours with $K\in \mathbb{N}$ arbitrary, i.e., interactions of finite range.

Previous results in nonlinear stochastic homogenization have been limited to a small algebraic rate of convergence $\varepsilon^δ$. We also establish error estimates for the approximation of the homogenized operator by the method of representative volumes of the order $(L/\varepsilon)^{-d/2}$ for a representative volume of size $L$. Our results also hold in the case of systems for which a (small-scale) $C^{1,α}$ regularity theory is available.

Many time-dependent linear partial differential equations of mathematical physics and continuum mechanics can be phrased in the form of an abstract evolutionary system defined on a Hilbert space. In this paper we discuss a general framework for homogenization (periodic and stochastic) of such systems. The method combines a unified Hilbert space approach to evolutionary systems with an operator-theoretic reformulation of the well-established periodic unfolding method in homogenization. Regarding the latter, we introduce a well-structured family of unitary operators on a Hilbert space that allows to describe and analyze differential operators with rapidly oscillating (possibly random) coefficients. We illustrate the approach by establishing periodic and stochastic homogenization results for elliptic partial differential equations, Maxwell's equations, and the wave equation.

In this paper we investigate rods made of nonlinearly elastic, composite--materials that feature a micro-heterogeneous prestrain that oscillates (locally periodic) on a scale that is small compared to the length of the rod. As a main result we derive a homogenized bending-torsion theory for rods as $Γ$-limit from 3D nonlinear elasticity by simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction under the assumption that the prestrain is of the order of the diameter of the rod. The limit model features a spontaneous curvature-torsion tensor that captures the macroscopic effect of the micro-heterogeneous prestrain. We device a formula that allows to compute the spontaneous curvature-torsion tensor by means of a weighted average of the given prestrain. The weight in the average depends on the geometry of the composite and invokes correctors that are defined with help of boundary value problems for the system of linear elasticity. The definition of the correctors depends on a relative scaling parameter $γ$, which monitors the ratio between the diameter of the rod and the period of the composite's microstructure. We observe an interesting size-effect: For the same prestrain a transition from flat minimizers to curved minimizers occurs by just changing the value of $γ$. Moreover, in the paper we analytically investigate the microstructure-properties relation in the case of isotropic, layered composites, and consider applications to nematic liquid-crystal-elastomer rods and shape programming.

We consider periodic homogenization of nonlinearly elastic composite materials. Under suitable assumptions on the stored energy function (frame indifference; minimality, non-degeneracy and smoothness at identity; $p\geq d$-growth from below), and on the microgeometry of the composite (covering the case of smooth, periodically distributed inclusions with touching boundaries), we prove that in an open neighbourhood of the set of rotations, the multi-cell homogenization formula of non-convex homogenization reduces to a single-cell formula that can be represented with help of a corrector. This generalizes a recent result of the authors by significantly relaxing the spatial regularity assumptions on the stored energy function. As an application, we consider the nonlinear elasticity problem for $\varepsilon$-periodic composites, and prove that minimizers (subject to small loading and well-prepared boundary data) satisfy a Lipschitz estimate that is uniform in $0<\varepsilon\ll1$. A key ingredient of our analysis is a new Lipschitz estimate (under a smallness condition) for monotone systems with spatially piecewise-constant coefficients. The estimate only depends on the geometry of the coefficient's discontinuity-interfaces, but not on the distance between these interfaces.

The notion of periodic two-scale convergence and the method of periodic unfolding are prominent and useful tools in multiscale modeling and analysis of PDEs with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. In this paper we are interested in the theory of stochastic homogenization for continuum mechanical models in form of PDEs with random coefficients, describing random heterogeneous materials. The notion of periodic two-scale convergence has been extended in different ways to the stochastic case. In this work we introduce a stochastic unfolding method that features many similarities to periodic unfolding. In particular it allows to characterize the notion of stochastic two-scale convergence in the mean by mere weak convergence in an extended space. We illustrate the method on the (classical) example of stochastic homogenization of convex integral functionals, and prove a new result on stochastic homogenization for a non-convex evolution equation of Allen-Cahn type. Moreover, we discuss the relation of stochastic unfolding to previously introduced notions of (quenched and mean) stochastic two-scale convergence. The method described in the present paper extends to the continuum setting the notion of discrete stochastic unfolding, as recently introduced by the second and third author in the context of discrete-to-continuum transition.

The latter can be expressed with help of correctors. We prove that the homogenized integrand admits a quadratic Taylor expansion in an open neighborhood of the rotations -- a result that can be interpreted as the fact that homogenization and linearization commute close to the rotations. Moreover, for small applied loads, we provide an estimate on the homogenization error in terms of a quantitative two-scale expansion.

We study the continuum limit of discrete, nonconvex energy functionals defined on crystal lattices in dimensions $d\geq 2$. Since we are interested in energy functionals with random (stationary and ergodic) pair interactions, our problem corresponds to a stochastic homogenization problem. In the non-degenerate case, when the interactions satisfy a uniform $p$-growth condition, the homogenization problem is well-understood. In this paper, we are interested in a degenerate situation, when the interactions neither satisfy a uniform growth condition from above nor from below. We consider interaction potentials that obey a $p$-growth condition with a random growth weight $λ$. We show that if $λ$ satisfies the moment condition $\mathbb E[λ^α+λ^{-β}]<\infty$ for suitable values of $α$ and $β$, then the discrete energy $Γ$-converges to an integral functional with a non-degenerate energy density. In the scalar case it suffices to assume that $α\geq 1$ and $β\geq\frac{1}{p-1}$ (which is just the condition that ensures the non-degeneracy of the homogenized energy density). In the general, vectorial case, we additionally require that $α>1$ and $\frac{1}α+\frac{1}β\leq \frac{p}{d}$. Recently, there has been considerable effort to understand periodic and stochastic homogenization of elliptic equations and integral functionals with degenerate growth, as well as related questions on the effective behavior of conductance models in degenerate, random environments. The results in the present paper are to our knowledge the first stochastic homogenization results for nonconvex energy functionals with degenerate growth under moment conditions.

Since the seminal results by Avellaneda \& Lin it is known that elliptic operators with periodic coefficients enjoy the same regularity theory as the Laplacian on large scales. In a recent inspiring work, Armstrong \& Smart proved large-scale Lipschitz estimates for such operators with random coefficients satisfying a finite-range of dependence assumption. In the present contribution, we extend the \emph{intrinsic large-scale} regularity of Avellaneda \& Lin (namely, intrinsic large-scale Schauder and Calderéron-Zygmund estimates) to elliptic systems with random coefficients. The scale at which this improved regularity kicks in is characterized by a stationary field $r_*$ which we call the minimal radius. This regularity theory is \textit{qualitative} in the sense that $r_*$ is almost surely finite (which yields a new Liouville theorem) under mere ergodicity, and it is \textit{quantifiable} in the sense that $r_*$ has high stochastic integrability provided the coefficients satisfy quantitative mixing assumptions. We illustrate this by establishing \emph{optimal} moment bounds on $r_*$ for a class of coefficient fields satisfying a multiscale functional inequality, and in particular for Gaussian-type coefficient fields with arbitrary slow-decaying correlations.

We establish an optimal, linear rate of convergence for the stochastic homogenization of discrete linear elliptic equations. We consider the model problem of independent and identically distributed coefficients on a discretized unit torus. We show that the difference between the solution to the random problem on the discretized torus and the first two terms of the two-scale asymptotic expansion has the same scaling as in the periodic case. In particular the $L^2$-norm in probability of the \mbox{$H^1$-norm} in space of this error scales like $ε$, where $ε$ is the discretization parameter of the unit torus. The proof makes extensive use of previous results by the authors, and of recent annealed estimates on the Green's function by Marahrens and the third author.

We consider the corrector equation from the stochastic homogenization of uniformly elliptic finite-difference equations with random, possibly non-symmetric coefficients. Under the assumption that the coefficients are stationary and ergodic in the quantitative form of a Logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI), we obtain optimal bounds on the corrector and its gradient in dimensions $d \geq 2$. Similar estimates have recently been obtained in the special case of diagonal coefficients making extensive use of the maximum principle and scalar techniques. Our new method only invokes arguments that are also available for elliptic systems and does not use the maximum principle. In particular, our proof relies on the LSI to quantify ergodicity and on regularity estimates on the derivative of the discrete Green's function in weighted spaces.

We study the corrector equation in stochastic homogenization for a simplified Bernoulli percolation model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d>2$. The model is obtained from the classical $\{0,1\}$-Bernoulli bond percolation by conditioning all bonds parallel to the first coordinate direction to be open. As a main result we prove (in fact for a slightly more general model) that stationary correctors exist and that all finite moments of the corrector are bounded. This extends a previous result in [GO1], where uniformly elliptic conductances are treated, to the degenerate case. With regard to the associated random conductance model, we obtain as a side result that the corrector not only grows sublinearly, but slower than any polynomial rate. Our argument combines a quantification of ergodicity by means of a Spectral Gap on Glauber dynamics with regularity estimates on the gradient of the elliptic Green's function.

We carry out the spatially periodic homogenization of nonlinear bending theory for plates. The derivation is rigorous in the sense of Gamma-convergence. In contrast to what one naturally would expect, our result shows that the limiting functional is not simply a quadratic functional of the second fundamental form of the deformed plate as it is the case in nonlinear plate theory. It turns out that the limiting functional discriminates between whether the deformed plate is locally shaped like a "cylinder" or not. For the derivation we investigate the oscillatory behavior of sequences of second fundamental forms associated with isometric immersions, using two-scale convergence. This is a non-trivial task, since one has to treat two-scale convergence in connection with a nonlinear differential constraint.

We study the homogenisation of geometrically nonlinear elastic composites with high contrast. The composites we analyse consist of a perforated matrix material, which we call the "stiff" material, and a "soft" material that fills the pores. We assume that the pores are of size $0<\varepsilon\ll 1$ and are periodically distributed with period $\varepsilon$. We also assume that the stiffness of the soft material degenerates with rate $\varepsilon^{2γ},$ $γ>0$, so that the contrast between the two materials becomes infinite as $\varepsilon\to 0$. We study the homogenisation limit $\varepsilon\to 0$ in a low energy regime, where the displacement of the stiff component is infinitesimally small. We derive an effective two-scale model, which, depending on the scaling of the energy, is either a quadratic functional or a partially quadratic functional that still allows for large strains in the soft inclusions. In the latter case, averaging out the small scale-term justifies a single-scale model for high-contrast materials, which features a non-linear and non-monotone effect describing a coupling between microscopic and the effective macroscopic displacements.
