The isotropic to ferroelectric nematic liquid transition had been theoretically studied over one hundred years ago, but its experimental studies are rare. Here we present polarizing optical microscopy studies and theoretical considerations of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal droplets coexisting with the isotropic melt. We find that the droplets have flat pancake-like shapes that are thinner than the sample thickness as long as there is a room to increase the lateral droplet size. In the center of the droplets a wing shaped defect with low birefringence is present that moves perpendicular to a weak in-plane electric field, and then extends and splits in two at higher fields. Parallel to the defect motion and extension, the entire droplet drifts along the electric field with speed that is independent of the size of the droplet and is proportional to the amplitude of the electric field. After the field is increased above 1V/mm the entire droplet gets deformed and oscillates with the field. These observations led us to determine the polarization field and revealed the presence of a pair of positive and negative bound electric charge due to divergences of polarization around the defect volume.

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals represent not only interesting fundamental science, but they also hold promise for storage capacitors with high power density or new information display technology having sub-millisecond switching. In this work we describe the synthesis and measurements of the physical properties of a new highly polar ferroelectric nematic compound, 4-nitrophenyl 4-[(2,4-dimethoxylbenzoyl)oxy]-2-fluorobenzoate (RT11001). The dipole moment of this material (along the long molecular axis) is calculated to exceed 11.5 Debye. We employ a wide range of physical characterization methods including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass density measurement, optical birefringence, polarizing optical microscopy (POM), electric current analysis, and electro-optical switching, to show that RT11001 has three distinct ferroelectric states, F1, F2 and F3. F1 is purely orientationally ordered ferroelectric nematic phase (NF), F2 has a ferroelectric nematic with possibly short-range hexagonal order normal to the director (NhF), and we conjecture that F3 has a long-range hexagonal order normal to the director (ColhF).

The advances in the mass scale manufacturing of microscale energy storage devices via inkjet printing rely on the development of high-quality printable ink. The earth-abundant, non-toxic carbon materials such as graphene, carbon nanotube (CNT), reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) have shown excellent electrochemical performance and thus garnered significant interest as suitable electrode material. Here we report the formulation of printable graphene aerogel ink and the fabrication of the micro-supercapacitors (μ-SCs) on flexible polyimide substrates via inkjet printing method. The advantage of using pristine graphene aerogel intends to avoid the complex processing steps and the use of toxic chemicals in the ink formulation and lower the concentration of other additive components. Thus, a higher loading of active functional material in the printable ink is achieved. The aerogel ink directly employed to write the interdigitated μ-SCs devices on a flexible polyimide substrate at room temperature via inkjet printing. The electrochemical performance measured using the organic ionic liquid in the voltage range of 0-1 volt. These printed μ-SCs showed an areal capacity of 55 μF/cm2 at a current density of 6 micro-amp/cm2. The printed devices showed good stability, with ~80% of capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. Contrary to the graphene-based μ-SCs, the aerogel micro-supercapacitors do not show a significant distortion in the CV scan even at a very high scan rate of ~2Vs-1. Thus, we propose graphene aerogel as promising electrode material for mass-scale production of the μ-SCs.

Gravitational waves from a binary with a single dynamically significant spin, notably including precessing black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) binaries, let us constrain that binary's properties: the two masses and the dominant black hole spin. Based on a straightforward fourier transform of $h(t)$ enabled by the corotating frame, we show the Fisher matrix for precessing binaries can be well-approximated by an extremely simple semianalytic approximation. This approximation can be easily understood as a weighted average of independent information channels, each associated with one gravitational wave harmonic. Generalizing previous studies of nonprecessing binaries to include critical symmetry-breaking precession effects required to understand plausible astrophysical sources, our ansatz can be applied to address how well gravitational wave measurements can address a wide range of astrophysical and fundamental questions. Our approach provides a simple method to assess what parameters gravitational wave detectors can measure, how well, and why.
