Abstract:
Three dimensional difference pair distribution functions from X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments are reported for yttria stabilized zirconia (Zr$_{0.82}$Y$_{0.18}$O$_{1.91}$). We use a quantitative analysis of the signatures in the 3D-$Δ$PDFs to establish that oxygen ions neighbouring a vacancy shift by 0.515(5)~Å along $\langle 1,0,0 \rangle$ towards the vacancy while metal ions neighbouri…

Three dimensional difference pair distribution functions from X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments are reported for yttria stabilized zirconia (Zr$_{0.82}$Y$_{0.18}$O$_{1.91}$). We use a quantitative analysis of the signatures in the 3D-$Δ$PDFs to establish that oxygen ions neighbouring a vacancy shift by 0.515(5)~Å along $\langle 1,0,0 \rangle$ towards the vacancy while metal ions neighbouring a vacancy shift by 0.269(2)~Å along $\langle 1,1,1 \rangle$ away from the vacancy. The neutron 3D-$Δ$PDF shows a tendency for vacancies to cluster along $\langle \frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\rangle$, which results in 6-fold coordinated metal ions.

Single crystal diffuse scattering is generally interpreted using correlation parameters that describe probabilities for certain configurations on a local scale. In this paper we present a novel interpretation of diffuse maxima using a disordered superspace approach. In (D+d)-dimensional superspace two modulation functions are disordered along the superspace axis $\vec{a}_{s,i}$ for i = 1,..,D, while the periodicity along the internal dimensions is maintained. This simple approach allows the generation of diffuse maxima of any width at any position in reciprocal space. The extinction rules that are introduced by superspace symmetry are also fulfilled by the diffuse maxima from structures generated using the disordered superspace approach. In this manuscript we demonstrate the disordered superspace approach using a simple a simple two-dimensional binary disordered system. The extension of the approach to (3+D)-dimensional superspace is trivial. The treatment of displacement and magnetic disorder in a similar approach is straight forward.

A detailed account of the local atomic structure and disorder at 5~K across the phase diagram of the high temperature superconductor K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2-z}$S$_z$ $(0 \leq z \leq 2)$ is obtained from neutron total scattering and associated atomic pair distribution function (PDF) approaches. Various model independent and model dependent aspects of the analysis reveal a high level of structural complexity on the nanometer length-scale. Evidence is found for considerable disorder in the $c$-axis stacking of the FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ slabs without observable signs of turbostratic character of the disorder. In contrast to the related FeCh (Ch = S, Se) type superconductors, substantial Fe-vacancies are present in K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2-z}$S$_z$, deemed detrimental for superconductivity when ordered. Our study suggests that the distribution of vacancies significantly modifies the iron-chalcogen bond-length distribution, in agreement with observed evolution of the PDF signal. A crossover like transition is observed at a composition of $z\approx1$, from a predominantly vacancy-disordered state at the selenium end to a more vacancy-ordered (VO) phase closer to the sulfur end of the phase diagram. The S-content dependent measures of the local structure are found to exhibit distinct behavior on either side of this crossover, correlating well with the evolution of the superconducting state to that of a magnetic semiconductor towards the $z\approx2$ end. The behavior reinforces the idea of the intimate relationship of correlated Fe-vacancies order in the local structure and the emergent electronic properties.

Colloidal nanoparticles, used for applications from catalysis and energy applications to cosmetics, are typically embedded in matrixes or dispersed in solutions. The entire particle surface, which is where reactions are expected to occur, is thus exposed. Here we show with x-ray pair distribution function analysis that polar and non-polar solvents universally restructure around nanoparticles. Layers of enhanced order exist with a thickness influenced by the molecule size and up to 2 nanometers beyond the nanoparticle surface. These results show that the enhanced reactivity of solvated nanoparticles includes a contribution from a solvation shell of the size of the particle itself.
