Model studies of the chiral and deconfinement transitions in QCD
Abstract: The Doctoral thesis of William Naylor. Gives the background of the three papers included, specifically introducing both the quark meson model and the NJL model, the basic formalism of thermal field theory, and functional renormalization group (including some details on numerically solving the FRG equation for the QM model).

Confronting effective models for deconfinement in dense quark matter with lattice data
Abstract: Ab initio numerical simulations of the thermodynamics of dense quark matter remain a challenge. Apart from the infamous sign problem, lattice methods have to deal with finite volume and discretization effects as well as with the necessity to introduce sources for symmetry-breaking order parameters. We study these artifacts in the Polyakov-loop-extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, and compare its pre… ▽ More

Phase diagram of QCD in a magnetic field: A review
Abstract: We review in detail recent advances in our understanding of the phase structure and the phase transitions of hadronic matter in strong magnetic fields $B$ and zero quark chemical potentials $μ_f$. Many aspects of QCD are described using low-energy effective theories and models such as the MIT bag model, the hadron resonance gas model, chiral perturbation theory, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model,… ▽ More

Inverse magnetic catalysis and regularization in the quark-meson model
Abstract: Motivated by recent work on inverse magnetic catalysis at finite temperature, we study the quark-meson model using both dimensional regularization and a sharp cutoff. We calculate the critical temperature for the chiral transition as a function of the Yukawa coupling in the mean-field approximation varying the renormalization scale and the value of the ultraviolet cutoff. We show that the results… ▽ More

Chiral and deconfinement transitions in a magnetic background using the functional renormalization group with the Polyakov loop
Abstract: We use the Polyakov loop coupled quark-meson model to approximate low energy QCD and present results for the chiral and deconfinement transitions in the presence of a constant magnetic background $B$ at finite temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $μ_B$. We investigate effects of various gluoni potentials on the deconfinement transition with and without a fermionic backreaction at finite… ▽ More

Experimental realization of light with time separated correlations by rephasing amplified spontaneous emission
Abstract: Amplified spontaneous emission is a common noise source in active optical systems, it is generally seen as being an incoherent process. Here we excite an ensemble of rare earth ion dopants in a solid with a π-pulse, resulting in amplified spontaneous emission. The application of a second π-pulse leads to a coherent echo of the amplified spontaneous emission that is correlated in both amplitude and… ▽ More

Photon echo quantum memories in inhomogeneously broadened two level atoms
Abstract: Here we propose a solid-state quantum memory that does not require spectral holeburning, instead using strong rephasing pulses like traditional photon echo techniques. The memory uses external broadening fields to reduce the optical depth and so switch off the collective atom-light interaction when desired. The proposed memory should allow operation with reasonable efficiency in a much broader ran… ▽ More

Non-classical photon streams using rephased amplified spontaneous emission
Abstract: We present a fully quantum mechanical treatment of optically rephased photon echoes. These echoes exhibit noise due to amplified spontaneous emission, however this noise can be seen as a consequence of the entanglement between the atoms and the output light. With a rephasing pulse one can get an "echo" of the amplified spontaneous emission, leading to light with nonclassical correlations at poin… ▽ More
