In this paper, we revisit the use of honeypots for detecting reflective amplification attacks. These measurement tools require careful design of both data collection and data analysis including cautious threshold inference. We survey common amplification honeypot platforms as well as the underlying methods to infer attack detection thresholds and to extract knowledge from the data. By systematically exploring the threshold space, we find most honeypot platforms produce comparable results despite their different configurations. Moreover, by applying data from a large-scale honeypot deployment, network telescopes, and a real-world baseline obtained from a leading DDoS mitigation provider, we question the fundamental assumption of honeypot research that convergence of observations can imply their completeness. Conclusively we derive guidance on precise, reproducible honeypot research, and present open challenges.

In this paper, we revisit the performance of the QUIC connection setup and relate the design choices for fast and secure connections to common Web deployments. We analyze over 1M Web domains with 272k QUIC-enabled services and find two worrying results. First, current practices of creating, providing, and fetching Web certificates undermine reduced round trip times during the connection setup since sizes of 35% of server certificates exceed the amplification limit. Second, non-standard server implementations lead to larger amplification factors than QUIC permits, which increase even further in IP spoofing scenarios. We present guidance for all involved stakeholders to improve the situation.

In this paper, we present the design, implementation, and analysis of DNS over CoAP (DoC), a new proposal for secure and privacy-friendly name resolution of constrained IoT devices. We implement different design choices of DoC in RIOT, an open-source operating system for the IoT, evaluate performance measures in a testbed, compare with DNS over UDP and DNS over DTLS, and validate our protocol design based on empirical DNS IoT data. Our findings indicate that plain DoC is on par with common DNS solutions for the constrained IoT but significantly outperforms when additional standard features of CoAP are used such as caching. With OSCORE, we can save more than 10 kBytes of code memory compared to DTLS, when a CoAP application is already present, and retain the end-to-end trust chain with intermediate proxies, while leveraging features such as group communication or encrypted en-route caching. We also discuss a compression scheme for very restricted links that reduces data by up to 70%.

In this paper, we measure the rush of scanners during the two months after the disclosure. We use several vantage points to observe both researchers and attackers. For this purpose, we collect and analyze payloads sent by benign and malicious communication parties, their origins, and churn. We find that the initial rush of scanners quickly ebbed. Especially non-malicious scanners were only interested in the days after the disclosure. In contrast, malicious scanners continue targeting the vulnerability.

Large-scale Internet scans are a common method to identify victims of a specific attack. Stateless scanning like in ZMap has been established as an efficient approach to probing at Internet scale. Stateless scans, however, need a second phase to perform the attack, which remains invisible to network telescopes that only capture the first incoming packet and is not observed as a related event by honeypots. In this work, we examine Internet-wide scan traffic through Spoki, a reactive network telescope operating in real-time that we design and implement. Spoki responds to asynchronous TCP SYN packets and engages in TCP handshakes initiated in the second phase of two-phase scans. Because it is extremely lightweight it scales to large prefixes where it has the unique opportunity to record the first data sequence submitted within the TCP handshake ACK. We analyze two-phase scanners during a three months period using globally deployed Spoki reactive telescopes as well as flow data sets from IXPs and ISPs. We find that a predominant fraction of TCP SYNs on the Internet has irregular characteristics. Our findings also provide a clear signature of today's scans as: (i) highly targeted, (ii) scanning activities notably vary between regional vantage points, and (iii) a significant share originates from malicious sources.

In this paper, we revisit the open DNS (ODNS) infrastructure and, for the first time, systematically measure and analyze transparent forwarders, DNS components that transparently relay between stub resolvers and recursive resolvers. Our key findings include four takeaways. First, transparent forwarders contribute 26% (563k) to the current ODNS infrastructure. Unfortunately, common periodic scanning campaigns such as Shadowserver do not capture transparent forwarders and thus underestimate the current threat potential of the ODNS. Second, we find an increased deployment of transparent forwarders in Asia and South America. In India alone, the ODNS consists of 80% transparent forwarders. Third, many transparent forwarders relay to a few selected public resolvers such as Google and Cloudflare, which confirms a consolidation trend of DNS stakeholders. Finally, we introduce DNSRoute++, a new traceroute approach to understand the network infrastructure connecting transparent forwarders and resolvers.

In this paper, we present first measurements of Internet background radiation originating from the emerging transport protocol QUIC. Our analysis is based on the UCSD network telescope, correlated with active measurements. We find that research projects dominate the QUIC scanning ecosystem but also discover traffic from non-benign sources. We argue that although QUIC has been carefully designed to restrict reflective amplification attacks, the QUIC handshake is prone to resource exhaustion attacks, similar to TCP SYN floods. We confirm this conjecture by showing how this attack vector is already exploited in multi-vector attacks: On average, the Internet is exposed to four QUIC floods per hour and half of these attacks occur concurrently with other common attack types such as TCP/ICMP floods.

In this paper, we shed new light on the DNS amplification ecosystem, by studying complementary data sources, bolstered by orthogonal methodologies. First, we introduce a passive attack detection method for the Internet core, i.e., at Internet eXchange Points (IXPs). Surprisingly, IXPs and honeypots observe mostly disjoint sets of attacks: 96% of IXP-inferred attacks were invisible to a sizable honeypot platform. Second, we assess the effectiveness of observed DNS attacks by studying IXP traces jointly with diverse data from independent measurement infrastructures. We find that attackers efficiently detect new reflectors and purposefully rotate between them. At the same time, we reveal that attackers are a small step away from bringing about significantly higher amplification factors (14x). Third, we identify and fingerprint a major attack entity by studying patterns in attack traces. We show that this entity dominates the DNS amplification ecosystem by carrying out 59% of the attacks, and provide an in-depth analysis of its behavior over time. Finally, our results reveal that operators of various .gov names do not adhere to DNSSEC key rollover best practices, which exacerbates amplification potential. We can verifiably connect this operational behavior to misuses and attacker decision-making.

Industrial control systems (ICS) are managed remotely with the help of dedicated protocols that were originally designed to work in walled gardens. Many of these protocols have been adapted to Internet transport and support wide-area communication. ICS now exchange insecure traffic on an inter-domain level, putting at risk not only common critical infrastructure but also the Internet ecosystem (e.g., DRDoS~attacks).
In this paper, we uncover unprotected inter-domain ICS traffic at two central Internet vantage points, an IXP and an ISP. This traffic analysis is correlated with data from honeypots and Internet-wide scans to separate industrial from non-industrial ICS traffic. We provide an in-depth view on Internet-wide ICS communication. Our results can be used i) to create precise filters for potentially harmful non-industrial ICS traffic, and ii) to detect ICS sending unprotected inter-domain ICS traffic, being vulnerable to eavesdrop** and traffic manipulation attacks.

Owing to their integer spin, exciton-polaritons in microcavities can be used for observation of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation in solid state. However, spin-related phenomena of such condensates are difficult to explore due to the relatively small Zeeman effect of standard semiconductor microcavity systems and the strong tendency to sustain an equal population of two spin components, which precludes the observation of condensates with a well defined spin projection along the axis of the system. The enhancement of the Zeeman splitting can be achieved by introducing magnetic ions to the quantum wells, and consequently forming semimagnetic polaritons. In this system, increasing magnetic field can induce polariton condensation at constant excitation power. Here we evidence the spin polarization of a semimagnetic polaritons condensate exhibiting a circularly polarized emission over 95% even in a moderate magnetic field of about 3 T. Furthermore, we show that unlike nonmagnetic polaritons, an increase on excitation power results in an increase of the semimagnetic polaritons condensate spin polarization. These properties open new possibilities for testing theoretically predicted phenomena of spin polarized condensate.

We evidence magnetic field triggered polariton lasing in a microcavity containing semimagnetic quantum wells. This effect is associated with a decrease of the polariton lasing threshold power in magnetic field. The observed magnetic field dependence of the threshold power systematically exhibits a minimum which only weakly depends on the zero-field photon-exciton detuning. These results are interpreted as a consequence of the polariton giant Zeeman splitting which in magnetic field: leads to a decrease of the number of accessible states in the lowest polariton branch by a factor of two, and substantially changes the photon-exciton detuning.

We present a detailed spectroscopic study of the photoluminescence quenching in an epitaxial structures containing CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots doped with low concentration of Mn$^{2+}$ ions. Our time-resolved and time-integrated experiments reveal the origin of the quenching observed in macro-photoluminescence studies of ensembles of such dots. We show that incorporation of even a few ions to an individual dot does not quench its luminescence effectively, although some fingerprints of expected spin-dependent quenching are visible. At the same time, the presence of Mn$^{2+}$ ions in the sample significantly affects the luminescence intensity of the wetting layer, resulting in a quenching of the global luminescence from studied structure. On the other hand, the luminescence decay dynamics is found to be independent of the presence of Mn$^{2+}$ ions, which suggests that the observed quenching occurs for the excited excitonic states.

The observation of spin-related phenomena of microcavity polaritons has been limited due to weak Zeeman effect of non-magnetic semiconductors. We demonstrate that the incorporation of magnetic ions into quantum wells placed in a non-magnetic microcavity results in enhanced effects of magnetic field on exciton-polaritons. We show that in such a structure the Zeeman splitting of exciton-polaritons strongly depends on the photon - exciton detuning and polariton wavevector. Our experimental data are explained by a model where the impact of magnetic field on the lower polariton state is directly inherited from the excitonic component, and the coupling strength to cavity photon is modified by external magnetic field.

Dopants of transition metal ions in II-VI semiconductors exhibit native 2+ valency. Despite this, 3+ or mixed 3+/2+ valency of iron ions in ZnO was reported previously. Several contradictory mechanisms have been put forward for explanation of this fact so far. Here, we analyze Fe valency in ZnO by complementary theoretical and experimental studies. Our calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA+U) indicate that the Fe ion is a relatively shallow donor. Its stable charge state is Fe2+ in ideal ZnO, however, the high energy of the (+/0) transition level enhances the compensation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ by non-intentional acceptors in real samples. Using several experimental methods like electron paramagnetic resonance, magnetometry, conductivity, excitonic magnetic circular dichroism and magneto-photoluminescence we confirm the 3+ valency of the iron ions in polycrystalline (Zn,Fe)O films with the Fe content attaining 0.2%.We find a predicted increase of n-type conductivity upon the Fe do** with the Fe donor ionization energy of 0.25 +/- 0.02 eV consistent with the results of theoretical considerations. Moreover, our magnetooptical measurements confirm the calculated non-vanishing s,p-d exchange interaction between band carriers and localized magnetic moments of the Fe3+ ions in the ZnO, being so far an unsettled issue.

Instead of conventional acceleration of spin relaxation due to the Larmor precession of electron and hole spins we observe a strong increase of the spin relaxation time at low magnetic fields followed by saturation and decrease at higher fields. We argue that this non-monotonic spin relaxation dynamics is a fingerprint of the magnetic quantum confined Stark effect. In the presence of electric field along the CQW growth axis, an applied magnetic field efficiently suppresses the exciton spin coherence, due to inhomogeneous broadening of the $g$-factor distribution.

In the case of QDs grown on a distributed Bragg reflector the photoluminescence intensity is enhanced by more than one order of magnitude, whereas the single QD lines are broadened as compared to the case of QDs grown on a ZnTe buffer. Structural and chemical analysis reveal an unintentional formation of a thin ZnSe layer induced by the growth interruption needed for the deposition of the QDs sheet. Sharp emission lines from individual quantum dots are recovered in the case of a thicker ZnTe layer grown prior to the QDs. This indicates that growth interruptions might be responsible for the QD emission line broadening.

Circularly polarized optical excitation is used to demonstrate the efficient injection of spin-polarized excitons to individual self-assembled CdSe quantum dots in ZnSe barrier. The exciton spin-transfer is studied by means of polarization-resolved single dot spectroscopy performed in magnetic field applied in Faraday configuration. Detailed analysis of the neutral exciton photoluminescence spectra reveals the presence of exciton spin relaxation during its lifetime in a quantum dot. This process is seen for both nonmagnetic dots and those containing single Mn$^{2+}$ ions. Taking this into account we determine the spin-polarization degree of excitons injected to a dot under circularly polarized below-the-barrier optical excitation at 488 nm. It is found to be close to 40% in the entire range of the applied magnetic field. Exploiting the established spin-conserving excitation channel we demonstrate the optical spin orientation of a single Mn$^{2+}$ ion embedded in a CdSe/ZnSe quantum dot.

We demonstrate, that despite the extremely low oscillator strength, their spin and population dynamics can by addressed by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. Our experiments make it possible to unravel and compare spin dynamics of direct excitons, indirect excitons and residual free electrons in coupled quantum wells. Measured spin relaxation time of indirect excitons exceeds not only one of direct excitons, but also one of free electrons by two orders of magnitude.

Solotronics, optoelectronics based on solitary dopants, is an emerging field of research and technology reaching the ultimate limit of miniaturization. It aims at exploiting quantum properties of individual ions or defects embedded in a semiconductor matrix. As already shown, optical control of a spin of a magnetic ion is feasible employing photo-generated carriers confined in a quantum dot. A non-radiative recombination, regarded as a severe problem, limited development of quantum dots with magnetic ions. Our photoluminescence studies on, so far unexplored, individual CdTe dots with single cobalt ions and individual CdSe dots with single manganese ions show, however, that even if energetically allowed, the single ion related non-radiative recombination is negligible in such zero-dimensional structures. This opens solotronics for a wide range of even not yet considered systems. Basing on the results of our single spin relaxation experiments and on the material trends, we identify optimal magnetic ion-quantum dot systems for implementation of a single-ion based spin memory.

Magnetooptical properties of (Ga,Mn)N layers containing various concentrations of Fe-rich nanocrystals embedded in paramagnetic (Ga,Fe)N layers are reported. Previous studies of such samples demonstrated that magnetization consists of a paramagnetic contribution due to substitutional diluted Fe ions as well as of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components originating from Fe-rich nanocrystals, whose relative abundance can be controlled by the grow conditions. The nanocrystals are found to broaden and to reduce the magnitude of the excitonic features. However, the ferromagnetic contribution, clearly seen in SQUID magnetometry, is not revealed by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). Possible reasons for differences in magnetic response determined by MCD and SQUID measurements are discussed.

The question of the correlation between magnetization, band splittings, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the fundamental gap region of dilute magnetic semiconductors is examined experimentally and theoretically taking the case of wurtzite Ga(1-x)FexN as an example. Magnetization and polarization-resolved reflectivity measurements have been performed down to 2K and up to 7T for x = 0.2%. Optical transitions originating from all three free excitons A, B and C, specific to the wurtzite structure, have been observed and their evolution with the magnetic field determined. It is demonstrated that the magnitude of the exciton splittings evaluated from reflectivity-MCD data can be overestimated by more than a factor of 2, as compared to the values obtained by describing the polarization-resolved reflectivity spectra with appropriate dielectric functions. A series of model calculations shows that the quantitative inaccuracy of MCD originates from a substantial influence of the magnetization-dependent exchange interactions not only on the spin splittings of excitons but also upon their linewidth and oscillator strength. At the same time, a method is proposed that allows to evaluate the field and temperature dependencies of the magnetization from MCD spectra. The accurate values of the excitonic splittings and of the magnetization reported here substantiate the magnitudes of the apparent $sp-d$ exchange integrals in (Ga,Fe)N previously determined.

We exploit the presence of multiple charge states in the photoluminescence spectra of single quantum dots to analyze simultaneously fine structure of different excitonic transitions, including recombination of neutral exciton/biexciton, doubly charged negative exciton and negatively charged biexciton. We demonstrate that the fine structure results from electron-hole exchange interaction and that spin Hamiltonians with effective exchange constants $δ_i$ can provide a good description of each transition in magnetic field for Faraday and Voigt field geometry. We determine and discuss values of the effective exchange constants for a large statistics of quantum dots.

A system of two coupled CdTe quantum dots, one of them containing a single Mn ion, was studied in continuous wave and modulated photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation, and photon correlation experiments. Optical writing of information in the spin state of the Mn ion has been demonstrated, using orientation of the Mn spin by spin-polarized carriers transferred from the neighbor quantum dot. Mn spin orientation time values from 20 ns to 100 ns were measured, depending on the excitation power. Storage time of the information in the Mn spin was found to be enhanced by application of a static magnetic field of 1 T, reaching hundreds of microseconds in the dark. Simple rate equation models were found to describe correctly static and dynamical properties of the system.

The evolution of the magnetization in (Cd,Mn)Te quantum wells after a short pulse of magnetic field was determined from the giant Zeeman shift of spectroscopic lines. The dynamics in absence of magnetic field was found to be up to three orders of magnitude faster than that at 1 T. Hyperfine interaction and strain are mainly responsible for the fast decay. The influence of a hole gas is clearly visible: at zero field anisotropic holes stabilize the system of Mn ions, while in a magnetic field of 1 T they are known to speed up the decay by opening an additional relaxation channel.

Spin dynamics of a single electron and an exciton confined in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot is investigated by polarization-resolved correlation spectroscopy. Spin memory effects extending over at least a few tens of nanoseconds have been directly observed in magnetic field and described quantitatively in terms of a simple rate equation model. We demonstrate an effective (68%) all-optical read-out of the single carrier spin state through probing the degree of circular polarization of exciton emission after capture of an oppositely charged carrier. The perturbation introduced by the pulsed optical excitation serving to study the spin dynamics has been found to be the main source of the polarization loss in the read-out process. In the limit of low laser power the read-out efficiency extrapolates to a value close to 100%. The measurements allowed us as well to determine neutral exciton spin relaxation time ranging from 3.4 +/- 0.1 ns at B = 0 T to 16 +/- 3 ns at B = 5 T.

Systematic measurements of auto- and cross-correlations of photons emitted from individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots under pulsed excitation were used to elucidate non-resonant excitation mechanisms in this self-assembled system. Memory effects extending over a few excitation pulses have been detected in agreement with previous reports and quantitatively described by a rate equation model, fitting a complete set of correlation and PL intensity results. The important role of single carrier trap** in the quantum dot was established. An explanation was suggested for the unusually wide antibunching dip observed previously in X-X autocorrelation experiments on quantum dots under cw excitation.
