We are presenting the first ab initio structure investigation of the loosely bound 11-Be nucleus, together with a study of the lighter isotope 9-Be. The nuclear structure of these isotopes is particularly interesting due to the appearance of a parity-inverted ground state in 11-Be. Our study is performed in the framework of the ab initio no-core shell model. Results obtained using four different, high-precision two-nucleon interactions, in model spaces up to 9\hbarΩ, are shown. For both nuclei, and all potentials, we reach convergence in the level ordering of positive- and negative-parity spectra separately. Concerning their relative position, the positive-parity states are always too high in excitation energy, but a fast drop with respect to the negative-parity spectrum is observed when the model space is increased. This behavior is most dramatic for 11-Be. In the largest model space we were able to reach, the 1/2+ level has dropped down to become either the first or the second excited state, depending on which interaction we use. We also observe a contrasting behavior in the convergence patterns for different two-nucleon potentials, and argue that a three-nucleon interaction is needed to explain the parity inversion. Furthermore, large-basis calculations of 13-C and 11-B are performed. This allows us to study the systematics of the position of the first unnatural-parity state in the N=7 isotone and the A=11 isobar. The 11-B run in the 9\hbarΩmodel space involves a matrix with dimension exceeding 1.1 x 10^9, and is our largest calculation so far. We present results on binding energies, excitation spectra, level configurations, radii, electromagnetic observables, and 10-Be+n overlap functions.

We implement an effective operator formalism for general one- and two-body operators, obtaining results consistent with the no-core shell model (NCSM) wave functions. The Argonne V8' nucleon-nucleon potential was used in order to obtain realistic wave functions for 4He, 6Li and 12C. In the NCSM formalism, we compute electromagnetic properties using the two-body cluster approximation for the effective operators and obtain results which are sensitive to the range of the bare operator. To illuminate the dependence on the range, we employ a Gaussian two-body operator of variable range, finding weak renormalization of long range operators (e.g., quadrupole) in a fixed model space. This is understood in terms of the two-body cluster approximation which accounts mainly for short-range correlations. Consequently, short range operators, such as the relative kinetic energy, will be well renormalized in the two-body cluster approximation.

We derive expressions for cluster overlap integrals or channel cluster form factors for ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) wave functions. These are used to obtain the spectroscopic factors and can serve as a starting point for the description of low-energy nuclear reactions. We consider the composite system and the target nucleus to be described in the Slater determinant (SD) harmonic oscillator (HO) basis while the projectile eigenstate to be expanded in the Jacobi coordinate HO basis. This is the most practical case. The spurious center of mass components present in the SD bases are removed exactly. The calculated cluster overlap integrals are translationally invariant. As an illustration, we present results of cluster form factor calculations for <5He|4He+n>, <5He|3H+d>, <6Li|4He+d>, <6Be|3He+3He>, <7Li|4He+3H>, <7Li|6Li+n>, <8Be|6Li+d>, <8Be|7Li+p>, <9Li|8Li+n> and <13C|12C+n>, with all the nuclei described by multi-hbar Omega NCSM wave functions.

In the no-core shell model formalism we compute effective one- and two-body operators, using the Lee-Suzuki procedure within the two-body cluster approximation. We evaluate the validity of the latter through calculations in reduced model spaces. In particular, we test the results for the two-body system and find that indeed the effective operators in the reduced space reproduce the expectation values or transition strengths computed in the full space. On the other hand, the renormalization for operators in the case of 6Li is very weak, suggesting the need for higher-body clusters in computing the effective interaction.

The three-body energy-dependent effective interaction given by the Bloch-Horowitz (BH) equation is evaluated for various shell-model oscillator spaces. The results are applied to the test case of the three-body problem (triton and He3), where it is shown that the interaction reproduces the exact binding energy, regardless of the parameterization (number of oscillator quanta or value of the oscillator parameter b) of the low-energy included space. We demonstrate a non-perturbative technique for summing the excluded-space three-body ladder diagrams, but also show that accurate results can be obtained perturbatively by iterating the two-body ladders. We examine the evolution of the effective two-body and induced three-body terms as b and the size of the included space Lambda are varied, including the case of a single included shell, Lambda hw=0 hw. For typical ranges of b, the induced effective three-body interaction, essential for giving the exact three-body binding, is found to contribute ~10% to the binding energy.

We show that this mean field approximation, especially with second order corrections, is able to provide some useful approximatons for $^4He$ and $^{16}O$. We also explore the physical insights provided by the Hartree-Fock results for single-particle properties such as spin-orbit splittings. Also, we calculate properties of 10B using the same NN potential in a basis space of up to 8 hbarOmega. Our results are consistent with results obtained by standard accurate NN potentials and demonstrate a deficiency of Hamiltonians consisting of only two-body terms. At this order of chiral perturbation theory three-body terms appear. It is expected that inclusion of such terms in the Hamiltonian will improve agreement with experiment.

The greatest sensitivity occurs for states where the spin-orbit interaction strength is known to play a role. In particular, with the TNI we obtain the correct ground-state spin for 10,11,12B and 12N, contrary to calculations with NN potentials only.

We investigate cross sections for neutrino-12C exclusive scattering and for muon capture on 12C using wave functions obtained in the ab initio no-core shell model. In our parameter-free calculations with basis spaces up to the 6 hbarOmega we show that realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, like e.g. the CD-Bonn, under predict the experimental cross sections by more than a factor of two. By including a realistic three-body interaction, Tucson-Melbourne TM'(99), the cross sections are enhanced significantly and a much better agreement with experiment is achieved. At the same time, the TM'(99) interaction improves the calculated level ordering in 12C. The comparison between the CD-Bonn and the three-body calculations provides strong confirmation for the need to include a realistic three-body interaction to account for the spin-orbit strength in p-shell nuclei.

Working in the framework of the ab-initio no-core shell model, we derive two-body effective interactions microscopically for specific harmonic-oscillator basis spaces from the realistic Argonne V8' nucleon-nucleon potential. However, our two-body effective interaction is only the dominant part of the A-body (A >= 3) effective interaction, which also contains three-, four- and, in general, up to A-body components. We model these multi-body components as a simple two-parameter, basis-space-dependent interaction. We then investigate the coupling needed to provide accurate descriptions of selected nuclear observables. We successfully model the multi-body interaction as a zero-range two-body operator times the number operator Nsps that measures the harmonic-oscillator quanta of the spectator nucleons.

We use a $4\hbarΩ$ shell-model calculation with a two-body effective interaction derived microscopically from the Reid93 potential to calculate the isospin-mixing correction for the 10C->10B superallowed Fermi transition. The effective interaction takes into account the Coulomb potential as well as the charge dependence of T=1 partial waves. Our results suggest the isospin- mixing correction $δ_{C}\approx 0.1 %$, which is compatible with previous calculations. The correction obtained in those calculations, performed in a $0\hbarΩ$ space, was dominated by deviation from unity of the radial overlap between the converted proton and the corresponding neutron. In the present calculation this effect is accommodated by the large model space. The obtained $δ_{C}$ correction is about a factor of four too small to obtain unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix with the present experimental data.

We use a large-scale 6 hbar Omega calculation for Li6 with microscopically derived two-body interaction to construct the 0 hbar Omega 0p-shell effective hamiltonian, electric quadrupole, and magnetic dipole operators. We use a large-scale 6 hbar Omega calculation for Li6 with microscopically derived two-body interaction to construct the 0 hbar Omega 0p-shell effective hamiltonian, electric quadrupole, and magnetic dipole operators. While the E2 and M1 6 hbar Omega operators are one-body operators with free nucleon charges, the effective operators are two-body operators with substantially different renormalization for the isoscalar and isovector matrix elements, especially for the E2 operator. We show that these operators can be very well approximated by one-body operators provided that effective proton and neutron charges are used. The obtained effective charges are compatible with those used in phenomenological shell-model studies. The two-body part of the effective operators is estimated.

Large-space no-core shell model calculations have been performed for A=3-6 nuclei, using a starting-energy-independent two-body effective interaction derived by application of the Lee-Suzuki similarity transformation. This transformation can be performed by direct calculation or by different iteration procedures, which are described. A possible way of reducing the auxiliary potential influence on the two-body effective interaction has also been introduced. The many-body effects have been partially taken into account by employing the recently introduced multi-valued effective interaction approach. Dependence of the He5 energy levels on the harmonic-oscillator frequency as well as on the size of the model space has been studied. The Reid 93 nucleon-nucleon potential has been used in the study, but results have also been obtained using the Nijmegen II potential for comparison.

In some algebraic fermion models of nuclear structure, particular Hamiltonians may lead to collective spectra of even and odd nuclei that can be unified using the dynamical supersymmetry concept with Pauli correlations exactly taken into account.

We construct finite Dyson boson-fermion map**s of general collective algebras extended by single-fermion operators. A key element in the construction is the implementation of a similarity transformation which transforms boson-fermion images obtained directly from the supercoherent state method. The constructed SO(12) and Sp(10) fermion models are solved beyond the explicit symmetry limits. Phase transitions to rotational structures are obtained, also in situations where there is no underlying SU(3) symmetry.
