Understanding High-Order Network Structure using Permissible Walks on Attributed Hypergraphs
Abstract: Hypergraphs have been a recent focus of study in mathematical data science as a tool to understand complex networks with high-order connections. One question of particular relevance is how to leverage information carried in hypergraph attributions when doing walk-based techniques. In this work, we focus on a new generalization of a walk in a network that recovers previous approaches and allows for… ▽ More

Global Spherical Tropicalization via Toric Embeddings
Abstract: The first steps in defining tropicalization for spherical varieties have been taken in the last few years. There are two parts to this theory: tropicalizing subvarieties of homogeneous spaces and tropicalizing their closures in spherical embeddings. In this paper, we obtain a new description of spherical tropicalization that is equivalent to the other theories. This works by embedding in a toric v… ▽ More

The Maximum Likelihood Degree of Toric Varieties
Abstract: We study the maximum likelihood degree (ML degree) of toric varieties, known as discrete exponential models in statistics. By introducing scaling coefficients to the monomial parameterization of the toric variety, one can change the ML degree. We show that the ML degree is equal to the degree of the toric variety for generic scalings, while it drops if and only if the scaling vector is in the locu… ▽ More

Convex Hull of Two Circles in R^3
Abstract: We describe convex hulls of the simplest compact space curves, reducible quartics consisting of two circles. When the circles do not meet in complex projective space, their algebraic boundary contains an irrational ruled surface of degree eight whose ruling forms a genus one curve. We classify which curves arise, classify the face lattices of the convex hulls, and determine which are spectrahedra.… ▽ More

Tropicalizing Spherical Embeddings
Abstract: Recently, a theory for the tropicalization of a spherical homogeneous space $G/H$ was developed by Tassos Vogiannou. We extend his ideas to define the tropicalization of a spherical $G/H$-embedding. This generalizes the construction of tropicalization of toric varieties. We also extend an alternate definition of spherical tropicalization via Gröbner theory developed by Kiumars Kaveh and Christophe… ▽ More

Betti Tables of Reducible Algebraic Curves
Abstract: We study the Betti tables of reducible algebraic curves with a focus on connected line arrangements and provide a general formula for computing the quadratic strand of the Betti table for line arrangements that satisfy certain hypotheses. We also give explicit formulas for the entries of the Betti tables for all curves of genus zero and one. Last, we give formulas for the graded Betti numbers for… ▽ More

Extremal Graphs Without 4-Cycles
Abstract: We prove an upper bound for the number of edges a C4-free graph on q^2 + q vertices can contain for q even. This upper bound is achieved whenever there is an orthogonal polarity graph of a plane of even order q.
