We study a sample of 936 early-type galaxies (ETGs) located in 48 low-z regular galaxy clusters with $M_{200}\geq 10^{14}~ M_\odot$ at $z< 0.1$. We examine variations in the concentration index, radius, and color gradient of ETGs as a function of their stellar mass and loci in the projected phase space (PPS) of the clusters. We aim to understand the environmental influence on the growth of ETGs according to the time since infall into their host clusters. Our analysis indicates a significant change in the behavior of the concentration index $C$ and color gradient around $M_{\ast} \approx 2\times 10^{11} ~M_\odot \equiv \tilde{M}_{\ast}$. Objects less massive than $ \tilde{M}_{\ast}$ present a slight growth of $C$ with $M_{\ast}$ with negative and approximately constant color gradients in all regions of the PPS. Objects more massive than $ \tilde{M}_{\ast}$ present a slight decrease of $C$ with $M_{\ast}$ with color gradients becoming less negative and approaching zero. We also find that objects more massive than $ \tilde{M}_{\ast}$, in all PPS regions, have smaller $R_{90}$ for a given $R_{50}$, suggesting a smaller external growth in these objects or even a shrinkage possibly due to tidal strip**. Finally, we estimate different dark matter fractions for galaxies in different regions of the PPS, with the ancient satellites having the largest fractions, $f_{DM}\approx$ 65%. These results favor a scenario where cluster ETGs experience environmental influence the longer they remain and the deeper into the gravitational potential they lie, indicating a combination of tidal strip** + harassment, which predominate during infall, followed by mergers + feedback effects affecting the late growth of ancient satellites and BCGs.

In this work, we study the optical properties of compact radio sources selected from the literature in order to determine the impact of the radio-jet in their circumnuclear environment. Our sample includes 58 Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and 14 Megahertz-Peaked spectrum (MPS) radio sources located at $z\leq 1$. The radio luminosity ($L_R$) of the sample varies between Log\,L$_R\sim$ 23.2 and 27.7 W\,Hz$^{-1}$. We obtained optical spectra for all sources from SDSS-DR12 and performed a stellar population synthesis using the {\sc starlight} code. We derived stellar masses (M$_\star$), ages $\langle t_\star \rangle$, star formation rates (SFR), metallicities $\langle Z_\star \rangle$ and internal reddening A$_V$ for all young AGNs of our sample. A visual inspection of the SDSS images was made to assign a morphological class for each source. Our results indicate that the sample is dominated by intermediate to old stellar populations and there is no strong correlation between optical and radio properties of these sources. Also, we found that young AGNs can be hosted by elliptical, spiral and interacting galaxies, confirming recent findings. When comparing the optical properties of CSS/GPS and MPS sources, we do not find any significant difference. Finally, the Mid-Infrared WISE colours analysis suggest that compact radio sources defined as powerful AGNs are, in general, gas-rich systems.

While there are many ways to identify substructures in galaxy clusters using different wavelengths, each technique has its own caveat. In this paper, we conduct a detailed substructure search and dynamical state characterisation of Abell 2399, a galaxy cluster in the local Universe ($z \sim 0.0579$), by performing a multi-wavelength analysis and testing the results through hydro-dynamical simulations. In particular, we apply a Gaussian Mixture Model to the spectroscopic data from SDSS, WINGS, and Omega WINGS Surveys to identify substructures. We further use public \textit{XMM-Newton} data to investigate the intracluster medium (ICM) thermal properties, creating temperature, metallicity, entropy, and pressure maps. Finally, we run hydro-dynamical simulations to constrain the merger stage of this system. The ICM is very asymmetrical and has regions of temperature and pressure enhancement that evidence a recent merging process. The optical substructure analysis retrieves the two main X-ray concentrations. The temperature, entropy, and pressure are smaller in the secondary clump than in the main clump. On the other hand, its metallicity is considerably higher. This result can be explained by the scenario found by the hydro-dynamical simulations where the secondary clump passed very near to the centre of the main cluster possibly causing the galaxies of that region to release more metals through the increase of ram-pressure strip**.16

In this work we investigate the influence of the dynamic state of galaxy clusters on segregation effects and velocity dispersion profiles (VDPs) for a sample of 111 clusters extracted from SDSS-DR7. We find that 73 clusters have Gaussian (G) velocity distribution and 38 clusters have a complex or non-Gaussian (NG) velocity distribution. We also split the G and NG samples into 'active' and 'passive' galaxies, according to their sSFRs and stellar masses. Our results indicate a strong spatial segregation between active and passive galaxies both in G and NG systems, with passive galaxies being more central. We also found that the passive population in G systems is the only family with lower velocity dispersions for the brightest galaxies ($M_r \lesssim -22.75$), thus presenting velocity segregation with luminosity. The similarity found between the VDPs of the galaxy populations in NG systems indicate that these sets probably share a similar mix of orbits. We also found a clear evolutionary trend for G systems, with brighter galaxies in richer clusters having flatter VDPs. The scenario emerging from this study suggests a direct relationship between segregation effects, VDPs and the dynamic state of clusters.

We investigate segregation phenomena in galaxy groups in the range of $0.2<z<1$. We study a sample of groups selected from the 4th Data Release of the DEEP2 galaxy redshift survey. We used only groups with at least 8 members within a radius of 4$\;$Mpc. Outliers were removed with the shifting gapper techinque and, then, the virial properties were estimated for each group. The sample was divided into two stacked systems: low($z\leq0.6$) and high($z>0.6$) redshift groups. Assuming that the color index ${(U-B)_0}$ can be used as a proxy for the galaxy type, we found that the fraction of blue (star-forming) objects is higher in the high-z sample, with blue objects being dominant at $M_{B}>-19.5$ for both samples, and red objects being dominant at $M_{B}<-19.5$ only for the low-z sample. Also, the radial variation of the red fraction indicates that there are more red objects with $R<R_{200}$ in the low-z sample than in the high-z sample. Our analysis indicates statistical evidence of kinematic segregation, at the 99%c.l., for the low-z sample: redder and brighter galaxies present lower velocity dispersions than bluer and fainter ones. We also find a weaker evidence for spatial segregation between red and blue objects, at the 70%c.l. The analysis of the high-z sample reveals a different result: red and blue galaxies have velocity dispersion distributions not statistically distinct, although redder objects are more concentrated than the bluer ones at the 95%c.l. From the comparison of blue/red and bright/faint fractions, and considering the approximate lookback timescale between the two samples ($\sim$3 Gyr), our results are consistent with a scenario where bright red galaxies had time to reach energy equipartition, while faint blue/red galaxies in the outskirts infall to the inner parts of the groups, thus reducing spatial segregation from $z\sim0.8$ to $z\sim0.4$.

We investigated the typical environment and physical properties of "red discs" and "blue bulges", comparing those to the "normal" objects in the blue cloud and red sequence. Our sample is composed of cluster members and field galaxies at $z \le 0.1$, so that we can assess the impact of the local and global environment. We find that disc galaxies display a strong dependence on environment, becoming redder for higher densities. This effect is more pronounced for objects within the virial radius, being also strong related to the stellar mass. We find that local and global environment affect galaxy properties, but the most effective parameter is stellar mass. We find evidence for a scenario where "blue discs" are transformed into "red discs" as they grow in mass and move to the inner parts of clusters. From the metallicity differences of red and blue discs, and the analysis of their star formation histories, we suggest the quenching process is slow. We estimate a quenching time scale of $\sim $ 2$-$3 Gyr. We also find from the sSFR$-$M$_*$ plane that "red discs" gradually change as they move into clusters. The "blue bulges" have many similar properties than "blue discs", but some of the former show strong signs of asymmetry. The high asymmetry "blue bulges" display enhanced recent star formation compared to their regular counterparts. That indicates some of these systems may have increased their star formation due to mergers. Nonetheless, there may not be a single evolutionary path for these blue early-type objects.

We carried out a dynamical study of the galaxy cluster pair A3407 \& A3408 based on a spectroscopic survey obtained with the 4 meter Blanco telescope at the CTIO, plus 6dF data, and ROSAT All-Sky-Survey. The sample consists of 122 member galaxies brighter than $m_R=20$. Our main goal is to probe the galaxy dynamics in this field and verify if the sample constitutes a single galaxy system or corresponds to an ongoing merging process. Statistical tests were applied to clusters members showing that both the composite system A3407 + A3408 as well as each individual cluster have Gaussian velocity distribution. A velocity gradient of $\sim 847\pm 114$ $\rm km\;s^{-1}$ was identified around the principal axis of the projected distribution of galaxies, indicating that the global field may be rotating. Applying the KMM algorithm to the distribution of galaxies we found that the solution with two clusters is better than the single unit solution at the 99\% c.l. This is consistent with the X-ray distribution around this field, which shows no common X-ray halo involving A3407 and A3408. We also estimated virial masses and applied a two-body model to probe the dynamics of the pair. The more likely scenario is that in which the pair is gravitationally bound and probably experiences a collapse phase, with the cluster cores crossing in less than $\sim$1 $h^{-1}$ Gyr, a pre-merger scenario. The complex X-ray morphology, the gas temperature, and some signs of galaxy evolution in A3408 suggests a post-merger scenario, with cores having crossed each other $\sim 1.65 h^{-1}$Gyr ago, as an alternative solution.

By combining a detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) of the simulated ultrasound signals with tools from the pattern-recognition literature, we build a Gaussian classifier which is able to associate each ultrasound signal with its corresponding microstructure with a very high success rate. We present a detailed study of plane waves in noncommutative abelian gauge theories. The dispersion relation is deformed from its usual form whenever a constant background electromagnetic field is present and is similar to that of an anisotropic medium with no Faraday rotation nor birefringence. When the noncommutativity is induced by the Moyal product we find that for some values of the background magnetic field no plane waves are allowed when time is noncommutative. In the Seiberg-Witten context no restriction is found. We also derive the energy-momentum tensor in the Seiberg-Witten case. We show that the generalized Poynting vector obtained from the energy-momentum tensor, the group velocity and the wave vector all point in different directions. In the absence of a constant electromagnetic background we find that the superposition of plane waves is allowed in the Moyal case if the momenta are parallel or satisfy a sort of quantization condition. We also discuss the relation between the solutions found in the Seiberg-Witten and Moyal cases showing that they are not equivalent.

Using a gauge embedding method, we construct the dual theory to the self-dual model interacting with a matter superfield, which turns out to be not the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory coupled to matter, but a more complicated model, with a ``restricted'' gauge invariance. We stress the difficulties in dualizing the self-dual field coupled to matter into a theory with complete gauge invariance. After that, we show that the duality, achieved between these two models at the tree level, also holds up to the lowest order quantum corrections.

The calculation is performed in fermionic sector where the Dirac fermions interact with the background gravitational field, including the parity-violating term \barψ\bsγ_5ψ. The investigation takes into account the weak field approximation and dimensional regularization scheme.

Our results are not restrict to any finite order in the Seiberg-Witten expansion involving the non-commutative parameter $θ$.

The minimal coupling adopted for both tensor fields in the self-dual representation is transformed into a non minimal magnetic like coupling in the topologically massive representation but with the currents swapped. It is known that to establish this equivalence a current-current interaction term is needed to render the matter sector unchanged. We show that both terms arise naturally from the embedding adopted. Comparison with Higgs/Julia-Toulouse duality is established.

We study the dual equivalence between the nonlinear generalization of the self-dual ($NSD_{B\wedge F}$) and the topologically massive $B\wedge F$ models with particular emphasis on the nonlinear electrodynamics proposed by Born and Infeld. This is done through a dynamical gauge embedding of the nonlinear self-dual model yielding to a gauge invariant and dynamically equivalent theory. We clearly show that nonpolinomial $NSD_{B\wedge F}$ models can be mapped, through a properly defined duality transformation, into $TM_{B\wedge F}$ actions. The general result obtained is then particularized for a number of examples, including the Born-Infeld-BF (BIBF) model that has experienced a revival in the recent literature.

Moreover, the minimal coupling of the original self-dual model is replaced by a non-minimal magnetic like coupling in the MCS side. Unlike the fermionic instance however, in the bosonic example the dual map** proposed here leads to a Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory immersed in a field dependent medium.

Abstract:
A charged superconductiong cosmic string produces an extremely large electric field in its vicinity. This leads to vacuum instability and to the formation of a charged vacuum condensate which screens the electric charge of the string. We analyze the structure of this condensate using the Thomas-Fermi method.

In this paper we consider a class of systems of two coupled real scalar fields in bidimensional spacetime, with the main motivation of studying classical or linear stability of soliton solutions. Firstly, we present the class of systems and comment on the topological profile of soliton solutions one can find from the first-order equations that solve the equations of motion. After doing that, we follow the standard approach to classical stability to introduce the main steps one needs to obtain the spectra of Schrödinger operators that appear in this class of systems. We consider a specific system, from which we illustrate the general calculations and present some analytical results. We also consider another system, more general, and we present another investigation, that introduces new results and offers a comparison with the former investigations.

We investigate the effective potential for Abelian Maxwell--Chern--Simons systems. This paper is dedicated to the study of the existence and the properties of electron-electron bound states in QED$_3$. A detailed analysis of the infrared structure of the perturbative series of the theory is presented. We start by analyzing the two-point Green's function, in the Bloch-Nordsieck approximation. The theory appears to be plagued by severe infrared divergencies, which nevertheless disappear when vacuum-polarization effects are non-perturbatively taken into account. The dynamical induction of a Chern-Simons term is at the root of this mechanism. {}From the inspection of the electron-electron non-relativistic potential it then follows that equally charged fermions may either repel or attract and, moreover, that bound states do in fact exist in the theory. We calculate numerically the binding energies and average radius of the bound states. We find an accidental quasi-degeneracy of the ground state of the system, between the lowest-energy $l=-3$ and $l=-5$ states, which could be related to a radio-frequency resonance in high-$T_c$ superconductors.

Abstract:
Vacuum polarization effects are non-perturbatively incorporated into the photon propagator to eliminate the severe infrared problems characteristic of QED$_3$. The theory is thus rephrased in terms of a massive vector boson whose mass is $e^2/(8π)$. Subsequently, it is shown that electron-electron bound states are possible in QED$_3$.
