We present a study of the thermoelectric (Seebeck and Nernst) response in heavily overdoped, non-superconducting La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$CuO$_4$. In spite of the electron-like curvature of the Fermi surface, the Seebeck coefficient is positive at low temperatures. Such a feature, previously observed in copper, silver, gold and lithium, is caused by a non-trivial energy dependence of the scattering time. We argue that this feature implies a strong asymmetry between the lifetime of occupied and unoccupied states along the zone diagonals and such an electron-hole asymmetry impedes formation of Cooper pairs along the nodal direction in the superconducting ground state emerging at lower do** levels.

Modern tomography involves gathering projection data from multiple directions and feeding them into a software algorithm for tomographic reconstruction. We focus our study on image reconstruction from Radon data in the setting of Computerized Tomography (CT), a non-invasive medical procedure that uses an X-rays equipment to produce cross-sectional images of the body. The detectors of the machine measure the X-ray projections through the sample, producing a so-called sinogram, which is actually the Radon transform of the attenuation coefficient. We provide a kernel-based reconstruction algorithm adapted to these kind of data, i.e. the Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART). The novel idea of this work is to reduce the complexity of the ART, through a faster implementation of the matrix-vector product, based on the storage of the involved matrix as a circulant matrix. We provide numerical results for both artificially generated (phantom data) and real data. The aim is to study the behaviour of the method with respect to its image reconstruction accuracy and its computational efficiency. In addition, we try to solve the trade-off between accuracy and efficiency and the one between accuracy and numerical stability.

In the quasi-one-dimensional cuprate PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$, the Pr cations order antiferromagnetically at 17 K in zero field. Through a combination of magnetic susceptibility, torque magnetometry, specific heat and interchain transport measurements, the anisotropic temperature-magnetic field phase diagram associated with this ordering has been mapped out. A low-temperature spin-flop transition in the Pr sub-lattice is found to occur at the same magnetic field strength and orientation as a dimensional crossover in the ground state of the metallic CuO chains. This coincidence suggests that the spin reorientation is driven by a change in the anisotropic Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction induced by a corresponding change in effective dimensionality of the conduction electrons.

Our data give clear-cut evidence for unusual normal state properties in these new materials. In particular, the emergence of superconductivity at low do** levels is accompanied by distinct anomalous transport behavior in $ρ$ of the normal state which is reminiscent of the spin density wave (SDW) signature in the parent material. At higher do** levels $ρ$ of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ shows a clear transition from this pseudogap-like behavior to Fermi liquid-like behavior, mimicking the phase diagram of the cuprates. Moreover, our data reveal a correlation between the strength of the anomalous features and the stability of the superconducting phase. The pseudogap-like features become stronger in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ where superconductivity is enhanced and vanish when superconductivity is reduced in the do** region with Fermi liquid-like behavior.

Because of the large linear slope of Bc2 about -5.4 T/K to -6.6 T/K near Tc = 28.5 K the T-dependence of the in-plane Bc2(T) shows a flattening near 23 K above 30 T which points to Pauli-limited behavior with Bc2(0) about 63-68 T. Localization effects are observed for extremely small amounts of disorder corresponding to electron mean-free-paths of order 100 unit cells. Estimates of the localization corrections suggest that this anomalous localization threshold heralds a crossover to a ground state with pronounced one-dimensional character in which conduction electrons become confined to a small cluster of chains.

In this article we report on the experimental realization of dimensional crossover phenomena in the chain compound PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ using temperature, high magnetic fields and disorder as independent tuning parameters. In purer crystals of PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$, a highly anisotropic three-dimensional Fermi-liquid state develops at low temperatures. This metallic state is extremely susceptible to disorder however and localization rapidly sets in. We show, through quantitative comparison of the relevant energy scales, that this metal/insulator crossover occurs precisely when the scattering rate within the chain exceeds the interchain hop** rate(s), i.e. once carriers become confined to a single conducting element.

Magnetotransport measurements on the overdoped cuprate La_{1.7}Sr_{0.3}CuO_4 are fitted using the Ong construction and band parameters inferred from angle-resolved photoemission. Within a band picture, the low temperature Hall data can only be fitted satisfactorily by invoking strong basal-plane anisotropy in the mean-free-path $\ell$. This violation of the isotropic-$\ell$ approximation supports a picture of dominant small-angle elastic scattering in cuprates due to out-of-plane substitutional disorder. We show that both band anisotropy and anisotropy in the elastic scattering channel strongly renormalize the Hall coefficient in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 over a wide do** and temperature range.

The angle-dependences of the magnetoresistance of two different isotopic substitutions (deuterated and undeuterated) of the layered organic superconductor κ-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2 are presented. The angle dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) arising from the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) and quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) Fermi surfaces in this material are often confused. By using the Boltzman transport equation extensive simulations of the AMRO are made that reveal the subtle differences between the different species of oscillation. No significant differences are observed in the electronic parameters derived from quantum oscillations and AMRO for the two isotopic substitutions. The interlayer transfer integrals are determined for both isotopic substitutions and a slight difference is observed which may account for the negative isotope effect previously reported [1]. The success of the semi-classical simulations suggests that non-Fermi liquid effects are not required to explain the interlayer-transport in this system.

We have measured details of the quasi one-dimensional Fermi-surface sections in the organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu(NCS)_2 and its deuterated analogue using angle-dependent millimetre-wave techniques. There are significant differences in the corrugations of the Fermi surfaces in the deuterated and undeuterated salts. We suggest that this is important in understanding the inverse isotope effect, where the superconducting transition temperature rises on deuteration. The data support models for superconductivity which invoke electron-electron interactions depending on the topological properties of the Fermi surface.
