Pathogenic infections pose a significant threat to global health, affecting millions of people every year and presenting substantial challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. Efficient and timely testing plays a critical role in disease control and transmission prevention. Group testing is a well-established method for reducing the number of tests needed to screen large populations when the disease prevalence is low. However, it does not fully utilize the quantitative information provided by qPCR methods, nor is it able to accommodate a wide range of pathogen loads. To address these issues, we introduce a novel adaptive semi-quantitative group testing (SQGT) scheme to efficiently screen populations via two-stage qPCR testing. The SQGT method quantizes cycle threshold ($Ct$) values into multiple bins, leveraging the information from the first stage of screening to improve the detection sensitivity. Dynamic $Ct$ threshold adjustments mitigate dilution effects and enhance test accuracy. Comparisons with traditional binary outcome GT methods show that SQGT reduces the number of tests by $24$% while maintaining a negligible false negative rate.

Soft biometrics such as gait is widely used with face in surveillance tasks like person recognition and re-identification. Nevertheless, in practical scenarios, classical fusion techniques respond poorly to changes in individual users and in the external environment. To this end, we propose a novel adaptive multi-biometric fusion strategy for the dynamic incorporation of gait and face biometric cues by leveraging keyless attention deep neural networks. Various external factors such as viewpoint and distance to the camera, are investigated in this study. Extensive experiments have shown superior performanceof the proposed model compared with the state-of-the-art model.

The creation of digital twins of experimental testbeds allows the validation of novel wireless networking solutions and the evaluation of their performance in realistic conditions, without the cost, complexity and limited availability of experimental testbeds. Current trace-based simulation approaches for ns-3 enable the repetition and reproduction of the same exact conditions observed in past experiments. However, they are limited by the fact that the simulation setup must exactly match the original experimental setup, including the network topology, the mobility patterns and the number of network nodes. In this paper, we propose the Machine Learning based Propagation Loss (MLPL) module for ns-3. Based on network traces collected in an experimental testbed, the MLPL module estimates the propagation loss as the sum of a deterministic path loss and a stochastic fast-fading loss. The MLPL module is validated with unit tests. Moreover, we test the MLPL module with real network traces, and compare the results obtained with existing propagation loss models in ns-3 and real experimental results. The results obtained show that the MLPL module can accurately predict the propagation loss observed in a real environment and reproduce the experimental conditions of a given testbed, enabling the creation of digital twins of wireless network environments in ns-3.

Video-based computer vision tasks can benefit from estimation of the salient regions and interactions between those regions. Traditionally, this has been done by identifying the object regions in the images by utilizing pre-trained models to perform object detection, object segmentation and/or object pose estimation. Although using pre-trained models is a viable approach, it has several limitations in the need for an exhaustive annotation of object categories, a possible domain gap between datasets, and a bias that is typically present in pre-trained models. In this work, we propose to utilize the common rationale that a sequence of video frames capture a set of common objects and interactions between them, thus a notion of co-segmentation between the video frame features may equip the model with the ability to automatically focus on task-specific salient regions and improve the underlying task's performance in an end-to-end manner. In this regard, we propose a generic module called ``Co-Segmentation inspired Attention Module'' (COSAM) that can be plugged in to any CNN model to promote the notion of co-segmentation based attention among a sequence of video frame features. We show the application of COSAM in three video-based tasks namely: 1) Video-based person re-ID, 2) Video captioning, & 3) Video action classification and demonstrate that COSAM is able to capture the task-specific salient regions in video frames, thus leading to notable performance improvements along with interpretable attention maps for a variety of video-based vision tasks, with possible application to other video-based vision tasks as well.

It is widely assumed that in our lifetimes the products available in the global economy have become more diverse. This assumption is difficult to investigate directly, however, because it is difficult to collect the necessary data about every product in an economy each year. We solve this problem by mining publicly available textual descriptions of the products of every large US firms each year from 1997 to 2017. Although many aspects of economic productivity have been steadily rising during this period, our text-based measurements show that the diversity of the products of at least large US firms has steadily declined. This downward trend is visible using a variety of product diversity metrics, including some that depend on a measurement of the similarity of the products of every single pair of firms. The current state of the art in comprehensive and detailed firm-similarity measurements is a Boolean word vector model due to Hoberg and Phillips. We measure diversity using firm-similarities from this Boolean model and two more sophisticated variants, and we consistently observe a significant drop** trend in product diversity. These results make it possible to frame and start to test specific hypotheses for explaining the drop** product diversity trend.

Face is one of the predominant means of person recognition. In the process of ageing, human face is prone to many factors such as time, attributes, weather and other subject specific variations. The impact of these factors were not well studied in the literature of face aging. In this paper, we propose a novel holistic model in this regard viz., ``Face Age progression With Attribute Manipulation (FAWAM)", i.e. generating face images at different ages while simultaneously varying attributes and other subject specific characteristics. We address the task in a bottom-up manner, as two submodules i.e. face age progression and face attribute manipulation. For face aging, we use an attribute-conscious face aging model with a pyramidal generative adversarial network that can model age-specific facial changes while maintaining intrinsic subject specific characteristics. For facial attribute manipulation, the age processed facial image is manipulated with desired attributes while preserving other details unchanged, leveraging an attribute generative adversarial network architecture. We conduct extensive analysis in standard large scale datasets and our model achieves significant performance both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Multi-scale, multi-fidelity numerical simulations form the pillar of scientific applications related to numerically modeling fluids. However, simulating the fluid behavior characterized by the non-linear Navier Stokes equations are often times computational expensive. Physics informed machine learning methods is a viable alternative and as such has seen great interest in the community [refer to Kutz (2017); Brunton et al. (2020); Duraisamy et al. (2019) for a detailed review on this topic]. For full physics emulators, the cost of network inference is often trivial. However, in the current paradigm of data-driven fluid mechanics models are built as surrogates for complex sub-processes. These models are then used in conjunction to the Navier Stokes solvers, which makes ML model inference an important factor in the terms of algorithmic latency. With the ever growing size of networks, and often times overparameterization, exploring effective network compression techniques becomes not only relevant but critical for engineering systems design. In this study, we explore the applicability of pruning and quantization (FP32 to int8) methods for one such application relevant to modeling fluid turbulence. Post-compression, we demonstrate the improvement in the accuracy of network predictions and build intuition in the process by comparing the compressed to the original network state.

Practical autonomous driving systems face two crucial challenges: memory constraints and domain gap issues. In this paper, we present a novel approach to learn domain adaptive knowledge in models with limited memory, thus bestowing the model with the ability to deal with these issues in a comprehensive manner. We term this as "Domain Adaptive Knowledge Distillation" and address the same in the context of unsupervised domain-adaptive semantic segmentation by proposing a multi-level distillation strategy to effectively distil knowledge at different levels. Further, we introduce a novel cross entropy loss that leverages pseudo labels from the teacher. These pseudo teacher labels play a multifaceted role towards: (i) knowledge distillation from the teacher network to the student network & (ii) serving as a proxy for the ground truth for target domain images, where the problem is completely unsupervised. We introduce four paradigms for distilling domain adaptive knowledge and carry out extensive experiments and ablation studies on real-to-real as well as synthetic-to-real scenarios. Our experiments demonstrate the profound success of our proposed method.

Attention models are widely used in Vision-language (V-L) tasks to perform the visual-textual correlation. Humans perform such a correlation with a strong linguistic understanding of the visual world. However, even the best performing attention model in V-L tasks lacks such a high-level linguistic understanding, thus creating a semantic gap between the modalities. In this paper, we propose an attention mechanism - Linguistically-aware Attention (LAT) - that leverages object attributes obtained from generic object detectors along with pre-trained language models to reduce this semantic gap. LAT represents visual and textual modalities in a common linguistically-rich space, thus providing linguistic awareness to the attention process. We apply and demonstrate the effectiveness of LAT in three V-L tasks: Counting-VQA, VQA, and Image captioning. In Counting-VQA, we propose a novel counting-specific VQA model to predict an intuitive count and achieve state-of-the-art results on five datasets. In VQA and Captioning, we show the generic nature and effectiveness of LAT by adapting it into various baselines and consistently improving their performance.

Whole slide imaging (WSI) has recently been cleared for primary diagnosis in the US. A critical challenge of WSI is to perform accurate focusing in high speed. Traditional systems create a focus map prior to scanning. For each focus point on the map, sample needs to be static in the x-y plane and axial scanning is needed to maximize the contrast. Here we report a novel focus map surveying method for WSI. The reported method requires no axial scanning, no additional camera and lens, works for stained and transparent samples, and allows continuous sample motion in the surveying process. It can be used for both brightfield and fluorescence WSI. By using a 20X, 0.75 NA objective lens, we demonstrate a mean focusing error of ~0.08 microns in the static mode and ~0.17 microns in the continuous motion mode. The reported method may provide a turnkey solution for most existing WSI systems for its simplicity, robustness, accuracy, and high-speed. It may also standardize the imaging performance of WSI systems for digital pathology and find other applications in high-content microscopy such as DNA sequencing and time-lapse live-cell imaging.

We report the development of a multichannel microscopy for whole-slide multiplane, multispectral, and phase imaging. We use trinocular heads to split the beam path into 6 independent channels and employ a camera array for parallel data acquisition, achieving a maximum data throughput of ~1 gigapixel per second. To perform single-frame rapid autofocusing, we place two near-infrared LEDs at the back focal plane of the condenser lens to illuminate the sample from two different incident angles. A hot mirror is used to direct the near-infrared light to an autofocusing camera. For multiplane whole slide imaging (WSI), we acquire 6 different focal planes of a thick specimen simultaneously. For multispectral WSI, we relay the 6 independent image planes to the same focal position and simultaneously acquire information at 6 spectral bands. For whole-slide phase imaging, we acquire images at 3 focal positions simultaneously and use the transport-of-intensity equation to recover the phase information. We also provide an open-source design to further increase the number of channels from 6 to 15. The reported platform provides a simple solution for multiplexed fluorescence imaging and multimodal WSI. Acquiring an instant focal stack without z-scanning may also enable fast 3D dynamic tracking of various biological samples.

Discrete time evolution of one-dimensional maps is embedded in continuous time by truncating the Taylor series expansion of the time evolution operator to a finite order N. Truncations with N > 4 leads to unconditional instability. Generalization of the truncated models with N = 3 and 4 shows dynamical behaviour characteristic of systems with a riddled parameter space.
