We study the effect of combining spin fluctuations and forward scattering electron-phonon ({\eph}) coupling on the superconductivity in the FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system modeled by a phenomenological two-band Hubbard model with long-range {\eph} interactions. We treat the electron and phonon degrees of freedom on an equal footing using a \emph{fully} self-consistent FLEX plus Migdal-Eliashberg calculation, which includes a self-consistent determination of the spin fluctuation spectrum. Based on FeSe monolayers, we focus on the case where one of the bands lies below the Fermi level (i.e. incipient), and demonstrate that the combined interactions can enhance or suppress $T_c$, depending on their relative strength. For a suitable choice of parameters, the spin-fluctuation mechanism yields a $T_c \approx 46.8$ K incipient $s_\pm$ superconductor, consistent with surface-doped FeSe thin films. A forward-focused {\eph} interaction further enhances the $T_c$, as observed in monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$.

We study the temperature-filling phase diagram of the single-band Holstein model in two dimensions using the self-consistent Migdal approximation, where both the electron and phonon self-energies are treated on an equal footing. By employing an efficient numerical algorithm utilizing fast Fourier transforms to evaluate momentum and Matsubara frequency summations, we determine the charge-density-wave (CDW) and superconducting transition temperatures in the thermodynamic limit using lattice sizes that are sufficient to eliminate significant finite size effects present at lower temperatures. We obtain the temperature-filling phase diagrams for a range of coupling strengths and phonon frequencies for the model defined on a square lattice with and without next-nearest neighbor hop**. We find the appearance of a superconducting dome with a critical temperature that decreases before reaching the $\mathbf{q}_{\text{max}} = (π,π)$ CDW phase boundary. For very low phonon frequencies, we also find an incommensurate CDW phase with the ordering vector $\mathbf{q}_{\text{max}} \approx (π,π)$ appearing between the commensurate CDW and superconducting phases. Our numerical implementation can be easily extended to treat momentum-dependent electron-phonon coupling, as well as dispersive phonon branches, and has been made available to the public.

We report the observation of multiple phonon satellite features in ultra thin superlattices of form $n$SrIrO$_3$/$m$SrTiO$_3$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. As the values of $n$ and $m$ vary the energy loss spectra show a systematic evolution in the relative intensity of the phonon satellites. Using a closed-form solution for the cross section, we extract the variation in the electron-phonon coupling strength as a function of $n$ and $m$. Combined with the negligible carrier do** into the SrTiO$_3$ layers, these results indicate that tuning of the electron-phonon coupling can be effectively decoupled from do**. This work showcases both a feasible method to extract the electron-phonon coupling in superlattices and unveils a potential route for tuning this coupling which is often associated with superconductivity in SrTiO$_3$-based systems.

The recent rekindling of interest in the mixed valent Kondo insulator SmB$_{6}$ as candidate for a first correlated topological insulator has resulted in a wealth of new experimental observations. In particular, angle-resolved photoemission experiments have provided completely new insights into the formation of the low temperature Kondo insulating state starting from the high temperature correlated metal. Here, we report detailed temperature and energy dependent measurements of the optical constants of SmB$_6$ in order to provide a detailed study from the point of view of a bulk sensitive spectroscopic probe. We detect a previously unobserved infrared active optical phonon mode, involving the movement of the Sm ions against the boron cages. The changes taking place in the free carrier response with temperature and their connection to changes in optical transitions between different bands are discussed. We find that the free charge density starts to decrease rapidly below approximately 200 K. Below 60 K a small amount of spectral weight begins to accumulate in low lying interband transitions, indicating the formation of the Kondo insulating state; however, the total integrated spectral weight in our experimental window ($\sim 4.35$ eV) decreases. This indicates the involvement of a large Coulomb interaction ($>$ 5 eV) in the formation of the Kondo insulator.

Interfacial phonons between iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) and perovskite substrates have received considerable attention due to the possibility of enhancing preexisting superconductivity. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we studied the correlation between superconductivity and e-ph interaction with interfacial-phonons in an iron-based superconductor Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs ($T_c \approx$ 33 K) made of alternating FeSC and oxide layers. The quasiparticle interference measurement over regions with systematically different average superconducting gaps due to the e-ph coupling locally modulated by O vacancies in VO$_2$ layer, and supporting self-consistent momentum-dependent Eliashberg calculations provide a unique real-space evidence of the forward-scattering interfacial phonon contribution to the total superconducting pairing.

Mono- and multilayer FeSe thin films grown on SrTiO$_\mathrm{3}$ and BiTiO$_\mathrm{3}$ substrates exhibit a greatly enhanced superconductivity over that found in bulk FeSe. A number of proposals have been advanced for the mechanism of this enhancement. One possibility is the introduction of a cross-interface electron-phonon ($e$-$ph$) interaction between the FeSe electrons and oxygen phonons in the substrates that is peaked in the forward scattering (small ${\bf q}$) direction due to the two-dimensional nature of the interface system. Motivated by this, we explore the consequences of such an interaction on the superconducting state and electronic structure of a two-dimensional system using Migdal-Eliashberg theory. This interaction produces not only deviations from the expectations of conventional phonon-mediated pairing but also replica structures in the spectral function and density of states, as probed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, and quasi-particle interference imaging. We also discuss the applicability of Migdal-Eliashberg theory for a situation where the \ep interaction is peaked at small momentum transfer and in the FeSe/STO system.
