Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ is a potential Kitaev magnet with a monoclinic layered crystal structure. Recent investigations of the $C_3$-symmetric sister compound Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ have uncovered a unique triple-$\mathbf{q}$ magnetic ground state, as opposed to a single-$\mathbf{q}$ (zigzag) one, prompting us to examine the influence of the reduced structural symmetry of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ on its ground state. Neutron diffraction data obtained on a twin-free crystal reveal that the ground state remains a multi-$\mathbf{q}$ state, despite the system's strong in-plane anisotropy. This robustness of multi-$\mathbf{q}$ orders suggests that they are driven by a common mechanism in the honeycomb cobaltates, such as higher-order magnetic interactions. Spin-polarized neutron diffraction results show that the ordered moments are entirely in-plane, with each staggered component orthogonal to the propagating wave vector. The inferred ground state favors a so-called XXZ easy-plane anisotropic starting point for the microscopic model over a Kitaev one, and features unequal ordered moments reduced by strong quantum fluctuations.

It is shown that EuIrGe$_3$ exhibits an incommensurate longitudinal sinusoidal order with $q\sim (0, 0, 0.792)$ and $m_{q} \parallel c\text{-axis}$ in the high temperature phase ($T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}< T < T_{\text{N}}$), which changes to a cycloidal order with $q=(δ', 0, 0.8)$ ($δ'\sim 0.017$) and $m_{q} \parallel ac\text{-plane}$ in the intermediate phase ($T_{\text{N}}^{\;*} < T < T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}$). In the low temperature phase ($T < T_{\text{N}}^{\;*}$), the cycloidal plane rotates by $45^{\circ}$ to have $q=(δ, δ, 0.8)$ ($δ\sim 0.012$). It is also pointed out that the X-ray scattering amplitude from odd-parity magnetic quadrupole due to the polar environment interfere with that from normal even-parity magnetic dipole in the magnetic ordered phase.

Magnetic superconductors are specific materials exhibiting two antagonistic phenomena, superconductivity and magnetism, whose mutual interaction induces various emergent phenomena, such as the reentrant superconducting transition associated with the suppression of superconductivity around the magnetic transition temperature (Tm), highlighting the impact of magnetism on superconductivity. In this study, we report the experimental observation of the ferromagnetic order induced by superconducting vortices in the high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) magnetic superconductor EuRbFe4As4. Although the ground state of the Eu2+ moments in EuRbFe4As4 is helimagnetism below Tm, neutron diffraction and magnetization experiments show a ferromagnetic hysteresis of the Eu2+ spin alignment. We demonstrate that the direction of the Eu2+ moments is dominated by the distribution of pinned vortices based on the critical state model. Moreover, we demonstrate the manipulation of spin texture by controlling the direction of superconducting vortices, which can help realize spin manipulation devices using magnetic superconductors.

Magnetic structures and the relationship between spin and charge-orbital orderings of an A-site ordered double-perovskite manganite SmBaMn2O6, an anticipated multiferroic material, were investigated by means of neutron diffraction. The spin arrangement in MnO2 planes perpendicular to the c axis is revealed to be the same as that in the A-site disordered half-doped manganites CE-type but the stacking pattern is found to be different displaying a unique twofold period. The temperature dependence of the superlattice magnetic and nuclear reflections clarifies that the antiferromagnetic spin ordering occurs at a temperature slightly lower than the temperature at which a rearrangement of the charge-orbital orderings occurs. The result evidences that the rearrangement leads the spin ordering. The intensities of the magnetic reflections are found to change across Tf = 10 K, suggesting a spin-flop by 90 [deg.] while kee** the Mn spin ordering pattern unchanged.

The excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ experiences a first-order structural transition under pressure from rippled to flat layer-structure at Ps = 3 GPa, which drives the system from an almost zero-gap semiconductor to a semimetal. The pressure-induced semimetal, with lowering temperature, experiences a transition to another semimetal with a partial-gap of 0.1-0.2 eV, accompanied with a monoclinic distortion analogous to that occurs at the excitonic transition below Ps. We argue that the partial-gap originates primarily from a symmetry-allowed hybridization of Ta-conduction and Ni-valence bands due to the lattice distortion, indicative of the importance of electron-lattice coupling. The transition is suppressed with increasing pressure to Pc = 8 GPa. Superconductivity with a maximum Tsc = 1.2 K emerges around Pc, likely mediated by strongly electron-coupled soft phonons. The electron-lattice coupling is as important ingredient as the excitonic instability in Ta2NiSe5.

At 30.0 K below a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition temperature of $T_{\rm CDW}$ = 140 K, superlattice peaks emerge near nuclear Bragg peaks described by an ordering vector $q_{\rm CDW}$=(0 0 $δ_c$) with $δ_c{\sim}$0.19. In contrast, magnetic peaks appear at $q_2 = (δ_2 δ_2 0)$ with $δ_2$ = 0.085 in a magnetic-ordered phase at 13.5 K below $T_{\rm N1}$ = 15.4 K. By further cooling to below $T_{\rm N3}$ = 12.2 K, the magnetic ordering vector changes into $q_1 = (δ_1 0 0)$ with $δ_1$ = 0.17 at 11.5 K and slightly shifts to $δ_1$ = 0.194 at 4.3 K. No distinct change in the magnetic Bragg peak was detected at $T_{\rm N2}$=13.2 K and $T_{\rm N4}$=10.0 K. The structural modulation below $T_{\rm CDW}$ with $q_{\rm CDW}$ is characterized by the absence of the superlattice peak in the (0 0 $l$) axis. As a similar CDW transition was observed in SrAl$_4$, the structural modulation with $q_{\rm CDW}$ could be mainly ascribed to the displacement of Al ions within the tetragonal $ab$-plane. Complex magnetic transitions are in stark contrast to a simple collinear magnetic structure in isovalent EuGa$_4$. This could stem from different electronic structures with the CDW transition between two compounds.

CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O crystallizes in the $P\bar{3}m1$ space group and Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a geometrically perfect kagome network with antiferromagnetic $J_1$. No intersite disorder between Cu$^{2+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$ ions is detected. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O enters a magnetic long-range ordered state below $T_\text{N}=7.2$~K, and the $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ magnetic structure with negative vector spin chirality is obtained. The ordered moment at 0.3~K is suppressed to $0.58(2)μ_\text{B}$. Our DFT calculations indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic $J_2$ and ferromagnetic $J_d$ superexchange couplings of a strength which places the system at the crossroads of three magnetic orders (at the classical level) and a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ PFFRG analysis shows a dominance of $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ type magnetic correlations, consistent with and indicating proximity to the observed $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ spin structure. The results suggest that this material is located close to a quantum critical point and is a good realization of a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$ kagome antiferromagnet.

Field-dependent magnetic structure of a layered Dirac material EuMnBi$_2$ was investigated in detail by the single crystal neutron diffraction and the resonant x-ray magnetic diffraction techniques. On the basis of the reflection conditions in the antiferromagnetic phase at zero field, the Eu moments were found to be ordered ferromagnetically within the $ab$ plane and stacked antiferromagnetically along the $c$ axis in the sequence of up-up-down-down. Upon the spin-flop transition under the magnetic field parallel to the $c$ axis, the Eu moments are reoriented from the $c$ to the $a$ or $b$ directions forming two kinds of spin-flop domains, whereas the antiferromagnetic structure of the Mn sublattice remains intact as revealed by the quantitative analysis of the change in the neutron diffraction intensities. The present study provides a concrete basis to discuss the dominant role of the Eu sublattice on the enhanced two-dimensionality of the Dirac fermion transport in EuMnBi$_2$.

However, such 3D Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ films with low carrier density and high electron mobility have been hardly obtained. Here we report the growth and characterization of 3D thick Cd$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{2}}$ films adopting molecular beam epitaxy. The highest electron mobility ($μ$ = 3 $\times$ 10$^{4}$ cm$^{2}$/Vs) among the reported film samples has been achieved at a low carrier density ($\textit{n} = 5$ $\times$ 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-3}$). In the magnetotransport measurement, Hall plateau-like structures are commonly observed in spite of the 3D thick films ($\textit{t} = 120$ nm). On the other hand, field angle dependence of the plateau-like structures and corresponding Shubunikov-de Haas oscillations rather shows a 3D feature, suggesting the appearance of unconventional magnetic orbit, also distinct from the one described by the semiclassical Weyl-orbit equation.

Magnetic excitations and magnetic structure of EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ were investigated by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), neutron diffraction, and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Below the superconducting transition temperature $T_\text{c}=36.5$~K, the INS spectra exhibit the neutron spin resonances at $Q_\text{res}=1.27(2)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$ and $1.79(3)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$. They correspond to the $\mathbf{Q}=(0.5,0.5,1)$ and $(0.5,0.5,3)$ nesting wave vectors, showing three dimensional nature of the band structure. The characteristic energy of the neutron spin resonance is $E_\text{res}=17.7(3)$~meV corresponding to $5.7(1)k_\text{B}T_\text{c}$. Observation of the neutron spin resonance mode and our RPA calculations in conjunction with the recent optical conductivity measurements are indicative of the $s_\pm$ superconducting pairing symmetry in EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$. In addition to the neutron spin resonance mode, upon decreasing temperature below the magnetic transition temperature $T_\text{N}=15$~K, the spin wave excitation originating in the long-range magnetic order of the Eu sublattice was observed in the low-energy inelastic channel. Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements demonstrate that the magnetic propagation vector of the Eu sublattice is $\mathbf{k}=(0, 0, 0.25)$, representing the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order. Linear spin wave calculations assuming the obtained magnetic structure with the intra- and inter-plane nearest neighbor exchange couplings of $J_1/k_\text{B}=-1.31$~K and $J_c/k_\text{B}=0.08$~K can reproduce quantitatively the observed spin wave excitation. Our results show that superconductivity and long-range magnetic order of Eu coexist in EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ whereas the coupling between them is rather weak.

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the molecular dimer-Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl reveal a phonon anomaly in a wide temperature range. Starting from $T_{\rm ins}\sim50$-$60$ K where the charge gap opens, the low-lying optical phonon modes become overdamped upon cooling towards the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N} = 27$ K, where also a ferroelectric ordering at $T_{\rm FE} \approx T_{\rm N}$ occurs. Conversely, the phonon dam** becomes small again when spins and charges are ordered below $T_\mathrm{N}$, while no change of the lattice symmetry is observed across $T_\mathrm{N}$ in neutron diffraction measurements. We assign the phonon anomalies to structural fluctuations coupled to charge and spin degrees of freedom in the BEDT-TTF molecules.

The ground state of a molecular diamond-lattice compound (ET)Ag$_4$(CN)$_5$ is investigated by the magnetization and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We found that the system exhibits antiferromagnetic long-range ordering with weak ferromagnetism at a high temperature of 102 K owing to the strong electron correlation. The spin susceptibility is well fitted into the diamond-lattice Heisenberg model with a nearest neighbor exchange coupling of 230 K, indicating the less frustrated interactions. The transition temperature elevates up to $\sim$195 K by applying pressure of 2 GPa, which records the highest temperature among organic molecular magnets. The first-principles band calculation suggests that the system is accessible to a three-dimensional topological semimetal with nodal Dirac lines, which has been extensively searched for a half-filling diamond lattice.

Magnetic transition phenomena in cubic chiral antiferromagnet EuPtSi with $T_{\rm N}$=4.0~K were investigated by means of single crystal neutron diffraction. At 0.3~K in the ground state, magnetic peaks emerge at positions represented by an ordering vector ${q}_{1}$=$(0.2, 0.3, 0)$ and its cyclic permutation. Upon heating, an additional magnetic peak splitting with hysteresis was uncovered at around $T^*_{\rm N}{\sim}$2.5~K, indicating the presence of a first-order commensurate-incommensurate transition with ${q}^*_{1}$=$(0.2, 0.3, δ)$ ($δ_{\rm max}{\simeq}$0.04) at $T^*_{\rm N}$. A half-polarized neutron scattering experiment for polarization parallel to the scattering vector revealed that polarization antiparallel to the scattering vector has stronger intensity in both magnetic phases. This feature clarifies the single chiral character of the helical structure with moments lying perpendicular to the ordering vector in both ordered states. Under a vertical magnetic field of 1.2~T for ${B}{\parallel}$[1,1,1] at 1.9~K entering into the so-called $A$ phase, magnetic peaks form characteristic hexagonal patterns in the equatorial scattering plane around nuclear peaks. An ordering vector ${q}_{A}{\simeq}({\pm}0.09, {\pm}0.20, {\mp}0.28)$ of the $A$-phase has similar periodic length as $q_{1}$, and could be the hallmark of a formation of skyrmion lattice in EuPtSi.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is widely used to build optoelectronic devices. However, as a hygroscopic water-based acidic material, it brings major concerns for stability and degradation, resulting in an intense effort to replace it in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. In this work, we focus on the perfluorinated ionomer (PFI) polymeric additive to PEDOT:PSS. We demonstrate that it can reduce the relative amplitude of OPV device burn-in, and find two distinct regimes of influence. At low concentrations there is a subtle effect on wetting and work function, for instance, with a detrimental impact on the device characteristics, and above a threshold it changes the electronic and device properties. The abrupt threshold in the conducting polymer occurs for PFI concentrations greater than or equal to the PSS concentration and was revealed by monitoring variations in transmission, topography, work-function, wettability and OPV device characteristics. Below this PFI concentration threshold, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OPVs based on poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) are impaired largely by low fill-factors due to poor charge extraction. Above the PFI concentration threshold, we recover the PCE before it is improved beyond the pristine PEDOT:PSS layer based OPV devices. Supplementary to the performance enhancement, PFI improves OPV device stability and lifetime. Our degradation study leads to the conclusion that PFI prevents water from diffusing to and from the hygrosopic PEDOT:PSS layer, which slows down the deterioration of the PEDOT:PSS layer and the aluminum electrode. These findings reveal mechanisms and opportunities that should be taken into consideration when develo** components to inhibit OPV degradation.

The nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The refined nuclear structure is distorted to a trigonal space group of $R\bar{3}$. The highest-energy dispersion extends up to 86 meV. The observed dispersions are reproduced by a simple model with three nearest-neighbor-exchange integrals between 16$a$ (octahedral) and 24$d$ (tetrahedral) sites, $J_{aa}$, $J_{ad}$, and $J_{dd}$, which are estimated to be 0.00$\pm$0.05, $-$2.90$\pm$0.07, and $-$0.35$\pm$0.08 meV, respectively. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $q$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $χ$"($E$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $χ$"($E$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single polarization mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

The magnetic structure of the intermetallic compound EuGa$_4$ was investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction with the time-of-flight (TOF) Laue technique on the new diffractometer SENJU at MLF of J-PARC. In spite of high neutron absorption of Eu, a vast number of diffraction spots were observed without isotope enrichment. The magnetic reflections were appeared at the positions with the diffraction indices of $h+k+l{\neq}2n$ below 16 K, indicating that the ordering vector is ${\bf q}=(0~0~0)$. Continuous evolution of magnetic reflection intensity below $T_{\rm N}$ follows a squared Brillouin function for $S$=7/2. By adopting a wavelength-dependent absorption collection, the magnetic structure of EuGa$_4$ was revealed that a nearly full magnetic moment of 6.4$~μ_{\rm B}$ of Eu lies within the basal plane of the lattice. The present study reveals a well-localized divalent Eu magnetism in EuGa$_4$ and demonstrates a high ability of SENJU to investigate materials with high neutron absorption.

Investigation of neural circuit functioning often requires statistical interpretation of events in subthreshold electrophysiological recordings. This problem is non-trivial because recordings may have moderate levels of structured noise and events may have distinct kinetics. In addition, novel experimental designs that combine optical and electrophysiological methods will depend upon statistical tools that combine multimodal data. We present a Bayesian approach for inferring the timing, strength, and kinetics of postsynaptic currents (PSCs) from voltage-clamp recordings on a per event basis. The simple generative model for a single voltage-clamp recording flexibly extends to include network-level structure to enable experiments designed to probe synaptic connectivity. We validate the approach on simulated and real data. We also demonstrate that extensions of the basic PSC detection algorithm can handle recordings contaminated with optically evoked currents, and we simulate a scenario in which calcium imaging observations, available for a subset of neurons, can be fused with electrophysiological data to achieve higher temporal resolution. We apply this approach to simulated and real ground truth data to demonstrate its higher sensitivity in detecting small signal-to-noise events and its increased robustness to noise compared to standard methods for detecting PSCs. The new Bayesian event analysis approach for electrophysiological recordings should allow for better estimation of physiological parameters under more variable conditions and help support new experimental designs for circuit map**.

We demonstrate that blending fluorinated molecules in PEDOT:PSS hole transport layers (HTL) induces charge transfers which impact on both charge extraction and photogeneration within organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. OPVs fabricated with modified HTL and two photoactive polymer blends led systematically to power conversion efficiencies (PCE) increases, with PTB7:PC70BM blend exhibiting PCE of ~ 8.3 %, i.e. ~ 15 % increase compared to pristine HTL devices. A reduced device-to-device characteristics variations was also noticed when fluorinated additives were used to modify the PEDOT:PSS. Shading lights onto the effect of HTL fluorination, we show that the morphology of the polymer:PCBM blends remains surprisingly unaffected by the fluorinated HTL surface energy but that, instead, the OPVs are impacted not only by the HTL electronic properties (work function, dipole layer, open circuit voltage, charge transfer dynamic) but also by alteration of the complex refractive indices (photogeneration, short circuit current density, external quantum efficiencies, electro-optic modelling). Both mechanisms find their origin in fluorination induced charge transfers. This work points towards fluorination as a promising strategy toward combining both external quantum efficiency modulation and power conversion efficiency enhancement in OPVs. Charge transfers could also be used more broadly to tune the optical constants and electric field distribution, as well as to reduce interfacial charge recombinations within OPVs.

We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O$_{6}$ octahedron of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh$^{3+}$ substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO$_{3}$ from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin-state and low-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions, and suggest that the high-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh$^{3+}$ ions.

Detailed electronic structure calculations demonstrate that the metal-insulator transition is caused by a Peierls instability in the quasi-one-dimensional column structure made of four coupled Cr-O chains running in the $c$-direction, leading to the formation of tetramers of Cr ions below the transition temperature. This furnishes a rare example of the Peierls transition of fully spin-polarized electron systems.

Single crystals of electron-doped SrMnO3 with a cubic perovskite structure have been systematically investigated as the most canonical (orbital-degenerate) double-exchange system, whose ground states have been still theoretically controversial. With only 1-2% electron do** by Ce substitution for Sr, a G-type antiferromagnetic metal with a tiny spin canting in a cubic lattice shows up as the ground state, where the Jahn-Teller polarons with heavy mass are likely to form. Further electron do** above 4%, however, replaces this isotropic metal with an insulator with tetragonal lattice distortion, accompanied by a quasi-one-dimensional 3z^2-r^2 orbital ordering with the C-type antiferromagnetism. The self-organization of such dilute polarons may reflect the critical role of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect that is most effective in the originally cubic system.

Ir2O4 crystallizes in a spinel (AB2O4) without A cations in the tetrahedral site, which is isostructural to lambda-MnO2. Ir ions form a pyrochlore sublattice, which is known to give rise to a strong geometrical frustration. This Ir spinel was found to be a narrow gap insulator, in remarkable contrast to the metallic ground state of rutile-type IrO2. We argue that an interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and a Coulomb repulsion gives rise to an insulating ground state as in a layered perovskite Sr2IrO4.
