The GRAINE project observes cosmic gamma-rays, using a balloon-borne emulsion-film-based telescope in the sub-GeV/GeV energy band. We reported in our previous balloon experiment in 2018, GRAINE2018, the detection of the known brightest source, Vela pulsar, with the highest angular resolution ever reported in an energy range of $>$80 MeV. However, the emulsion scanning system used in the experiment was designed to achieve a high-speed scanning, and it was not accurate enough to ensure the optimum spacial resolution of the emulsion film and limited the performance. Here, we report a new high-precision scanning system that can be used to greatly improve the observation result of GRAINE2018 and also be employed in future experiments. The system involves a new algorithm that recognizes each silver grain on an emulsion film and is capable of measuring tracks with a positional resolution for the passing points of tracks of almost the same as the intrinsic resolution of nuclear emulsion film ($\sim$70 nm). This resolution is approximately one order of magnitude smaller than that obtained with the high-speed scanning system. With this system, an angular resolution for gamma-rays of 0.1$^\circ$ at 1 GeV is expected to be achieved. Furthermore, we successfully combine the new high-precision system with the existing high-speed system, establishing the system to make a high-speed and high-precision measurement. Employing these systems, we reanalyze the gamma-ray events detected previously by only the high-speed system in GRAINE2018 and obtain an about three times higher angular resolution (0.22$^\circ$) in 500--700 MeV than the original value. The high-resolution observation may bring new insights into the gamma-ray emission from the Galactic center region and may realize polarization measurements of high-energy cosmic gamma-rays.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases, characterized by transient and unprovoked events called epileptic seizures. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is an auxiliary method used to perform both the diagnosis and the monitoring of epilepsy. Given the unexpected nature of an epileptic seizure, its prediction would improve patient care, optimizing the quality of life and the treatment of epilepsy. Predicting an epileptic seizure implies the identification of two distinct states of EEG in a patient with epilepsy: the preictal and the interictal. In this paper, we developed two deep learning models called Temporal Multi-Channel Transformer (TMC-T) and Vision Transformer (TMC-ViT), adaptations of Transformer-based architectures for multi-channel temporal signals. Moreover, we accessed the impact of choosing different preictal duration, since its length is not a consensus among experts, and also evaluated how the sample size benefits each model. Our models are compared with fully connected, convolutional, and recurrent networks. The algorithms were patient-specific trained and evaluated on raw EEG signals from the CHB-MIT database. Experimental results and statistical validation demonstrated that our TMC-ViT model surpassed the CNN architecture, state-of-the-art in seizure prediction.

In this work, we give a characterization of the reservoir computer (RC) by the network structure, especially the probability distribution of random coupling constants. First, based on the path integral method, we clarify the universal behavior of the random network dynamics in the thermodynamic limit, which depends only on the asymptotic behavior of the second cumulant generating functions of the network coupling constants. This result enables us to classify the random networks into several universality classes, according to the distribution function of coupling constants chosen for the networks. Interestingly, it is revealed that such a classification has a close relationship with the distribution of eigenvalues of the random coupling matrix. We also comment on the relation between our theory and some practical choices of random connectivity in the RC. Subsequently, we investigate the relationship between the RC's computational power and the network parameters for several universality classes. We perform several numerical simulations to evaluate the phase diagrams of the steady reservoir states, common-signal-induced synchronization, and the computational power in the chaotic time series inference tasks. As a result, we clarify the close relationship between these quantities, especially a remarkable computational performance near the phase transitions, which is realized even near a non-chaotic transition boundary. These results may provide us with a new perspective on the designing principle for the RC.

We have carried out $ν_μ$ charged-current interaction measurement on iron using an emulsion detector exposed to the T2K neutrino beam in the J-PARC neutrino facility. The data samples correspond to 4.0$\times$10$^{19}$ protons on target, and the neutrino mean energy is 1.49$\,$GeV. The emulsion detector is suitable for precision measurements of charged particles produced in neutrino-iron interactions with a low momentum threshold thanks to thin-layered structure and sub-$μ$m spatial resolution. The charged particles are successfully detected, and their multiplicities are measured using the emulsion detector. The cross section was measured to be $σ^{\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{CC}} = (1.28 \pm 0.11({\mathrm{stat.}})^{+0.12}_{-0.11}({\mathrm{syst.}})) \times 10^{-38} \, {\mathrm{cm}}^{2}/{\mathrm{nucleon}}$. The cross section in a limited kinematic phase space of induced muons, $θ_μ < 45^{\circ}$ and $p_μ > 400 \, {\rm MeV}/c$, on iron was $σ^{\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{CC \hspace{1mm} phase \hspace{0.5mm} space}} = (0.84 \pm 0.07({\mathrm{stat.}})^{+0.07}_{-0.06}({\mathrm{syst.}})) \times 10^{-38} \, {\mathrm{cm}}^{2}/{\mathrm{nucleon}}$. The cross-section results are consistent with previous values obtained via different techniques using the same beamline, and they are well reproduced by current neutrino interaction models. These results demonstrate the capability of the detector towards the detailed measurements of the neutrino-nucleus interactions around the 1$\,$GeV energy region.

This paper reports the track multiplicity and kinematics of muons, charged pions, and protons from charged-current inclusive $\barν_μ$ and $ν_μ$ interactions on a water target, measured using a nuclear emulsion detector in the NINJA experiment. A 3-kg water target was exposed to the T2K antineutrino-enhanced beam with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. Owing to the high-granularity of the nuclear emulsion, protons with momenta down to 200 MeV/$c$ from the neutrino-water interactions were detected. We find good agreement between the observed data and model predictions for all kinematic distributions other than the number of charged pions. These results demonstrate the capability of measurements with nuclear emulsion to improve neutrino interaction models.
