Clustering Sets of Functional Data by Similarity in Law
Abstract: We introduce a new clustering method for the classification of functional data sets by their probabilistic law, that is, a procedure that aims to assign data sets to the same cluster if and only if the data were generated with the same underlying distribution. This method has the nice virtue of being non-supervised and non-parametric, allowing for exploratory investigation with few assumptions abo… ▽ More

The brain uses renewal points to model random sequences of stimuli
Abstract: It has been classically conjectured that the brain assigns probabilistic models to sequences of stimuli. An important issue associated with this conjecture is the identification of the classes of models used by the brain to perform this task. Towards a classification of isolated $j$-invariants
Abstract: We develop an algorithm to test whether a non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ gives rise to an isolated point of any degree on any modular curve of the form $X_1(N)$. This builds on prior work of Zywina which gives a method for computing the image of the adelic Galois representation associated to $E$. Hyperelliptic and trigonal modular curves in characteristic $p$

For all such intermediate modular curves, we give an explicit description of all primes $p$ such that $X_Δ(N)_{\overline{\mathbb F}_p}$ is either hyperelliptic or trigonal. Two results on $x^r + y^r = dz^p$
Abstract: This note proves two theorems regarding Fermat-type equation $x^r + y^r = dz^p$ where $r \geq 5$ is a prime. Our main result shows that, for infinitely many integers~$d$, the previous equation has no non-trivial primitive solutions such that $2 \mid x+y$ or $r \mid x+y$, for a set of exponents $p$ of positive density. We use the modular method with a symplectic argument to prove this result.

Smooth values of some quadratic polynomials
Abstract: In this paper, using a method of Luca and the author, we find all values $x$ such that the quadratic polynomials $x^2+1,$ $x^2+4,$ $x^2+2$ and $x^2-2$ are 200-smooth and all values $x$ such that the quadratic polynomial $x^2-4$ is 100-smooth.

On the largest prime factor of $x^2-1$
Abstract: In this paper, we find all integers $x$ such that $x^{2}-1$ has only prime factors smaller than 100. This gives some interesting numerical corollaries. For example, for any positive integer $n$ we can find the largest positive integer $x$ such that all prime factors of each of $x, x+1,..., x+n$ are less than 100.

The Diophantine equation $x^4\pm y^4=iz^2$ in Gaussian integers
Abstract: In this note we find all the solutions of the Diophantine equation $x^4\pm y^4=iz^2$ using elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q(i)$. Also, using the same method we give a new proof of Hilbert's result that the equation $x^4\pm y^4=z^2$ has only trivial solutions in Gaussian integers.

Complete classification of torsion of elliptic curves over quadratic cyclotomic fields
Abstract: In a previous paper, the author examined the possible torsions of an elliptic curve over the quadratic fields $\mathbb Q(i)$ and $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-3})$. Although all the possible torsions were found if the elliptic curve has rational coefficients, we were unable to eliminate some possibilities for the torsion if the elliptic curve has coefficients that are not rational. In this note, by finding al… ▽ More
