In some insulators, corner charges are fractionally quantized, due to the topological invariant called a filling anomaly. The previous theories of fractional corner charges have been mostly limited to two-dimensional systems. In three dimensions, only limited cases have been studied. In this study, we derive formulas for the filling anomaly and the corner charge in various crystals with all the tetrahedral and cubic space groups. We discuss that the quantized corner charge requires the crystal shapes to be vertex-transitive polyhedra. We show that the formula of the filling anomaly is universally given by the difference between electronic and ionic charges at the Wyckoff position 1a. The fractional corner charges appear by equally distributing the filling anomaly to all the corners of the crystal. We also derive the k-space formulas for the fractional corner charge. In some cases, the corner charge is not determined solely from the irreps at high-symmetry k-points. In such cases, we introduce a new Z2 topological invariant to determine the corner charge.

Higher-order topological insulators host gapless states on hinges or corners of three-dimensional crystals. Recent studies suggested that even topologically trivial insulators may exhibit fractionally quantized charges localized at hinges or corners. Although most of the previous studies focused on two-dimensional systems, in this work, we take the initial step toward the systematic understanding of hinge and corner charges in three-dimensional insulators. We consider five crystal shapes of vertex-transitive polyhedra with the cubic symmetry such as a cube, an octahedron and a cuboctahedron. We derive real-space formulas for the hinge and corner charges in terms of the electric charges associated with bulk Wyckoff positions. We find that both the hinge and corner charges can be predicted from the bulk perspective only modulo certain fractions depending on the crystal shape, because the relaxation near boundaries of the crystal may affect the fractional parts. In particular, we show that a fractionally quantized charge $1/24$ mod $1/12$ in the unit of elementary charge can appear in a crystal with a shape of a truncated cube or a truncated octahedron. We also investigate momentum-space formulas for the hinge and corner charges. It turns out that the irreducible representations of filled bands at high-symmetry momenta are not sufficient to determine the corner charge. We introduce an additional Wilson-loop invariant to resolve this issue.

The dictionary consists of an appropriate scalar bandwidth matrix and a part of the original data. We develop the non-asymptotic error bound of estimator obtained via the proposed stagewise minimization algorithm. It is confirmed from simulation studies that the proposed estimator performs competitive to or sometime better than other well-known density estimators.

This paper is concerned with testing normality in a Hilbert space based on the maximum mean discrepancy. Specifically, we discuss the behavior of the test from two standpoints: asymptotics and practical aspects. Asymptotic normality of the test under a fixed alternative hypothesis is developed, which implies that the test has consistency. Asymptotic distribution of the test under a sequence of local alternatives is also derived, from which asymptotic null distribution of the test is obtained. A concrete expression for the integral kernel associated with the null distribution is derived under the use of the Gaussian kernel, allowing the implementation of a reliable approximation of the null distribution. Simulations and applications to real data sets are reported with emphasis on high-dimension low-sample size cases.

In this paper, we propose a new semiparametric regression estimator by using a hybrid technique of a parametric approach and a nonparametric penalized spline method. The overall shape of the true regression function is captured by the parametric part, while its residual is consistently estimated by the nonparametric part. Asymptotic theory for the proposed semiparametric estimator is developed, showing that its behavior is dependent on the asymptotics for the nonparametric penalized spline estimator as well as on the discrepancy between the true regression function and the parametric part. As a naturally associated application of asymptotics, some criteria for the selection of parametric models are addressed. Numerical experiments show that the proposed estimator performs better than the existing kernel-based semiparametric estimator and the fully nonparametric estimator, and that the proposed criteria work well for choosing a reasonable parametric model.

This paper proposes a new method and algorithm for predicting multivariate responses in a regression setting. Research into classification of High Dimension Low Sample Size (HDLSS) data, in particular microarray data, has made considerable advances, but regression prediction for high-dimensional data with continuous responses has had less attention. Recently Bair et al (2006) proposed an efficient prediction method based on supervised principal component regression (PCR). Motivated by the fact that a larger number of principal components results in better regression performance, this paper extends the method of Bair et al in several ways: a comprehensive variable ranking is combined with a selection of the best number of components for PCR, and the new method further extends to regression with multivariate responses. The new method is particularly suited to HDLSS problems. Applications to simulated and real data demonstrate the performance of the new method. Comparisons with Bair et al (2006) show that for high-dimensional data in particular the new ranking results in a smaller number of predictors and smaller errors.

We study the properties of light mesons in the scalar, pseudo-scalar, and vector channels within the light-front quantization, by using the (one flavor) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with vector interaction. After taking into account the effects of chiral symmetry breaking, we derive the bound-state equation in each channel in the large N limit (N is the number of colors), which means that we consider the lowest q\bar{q} Fock state with the constituent quark and antiquark. By solving the bound-state equation, we simultaneously obtain a mass and a light-cone (LC) wavefunction of the meson. While we reproduce the previous results for the scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons, we find that, for a vector meson, the bound-state equations for the transverse and longitudinal polarizations look different from each other. However, eventually after imposing a cutoff which is invariant under the parity and boost transformations, one finds these two are identical, giving the same mass and the same (spin-independent) LC wavefunction. When the vector interaction becomes larger than a critical value, the vector state forms a bound state, whose mass decreases as the interaction becomes stronger. While the LC wavefunction of the pseudo-scalar meson is broadly distributed in longitudinal momentum (x) space, that of the vector meson is squeezed around x=1/2.

L_2-fitting. A class of estimators that have multiplicative adjustment is provided, including estimators proposed by several authors as special cases, and the asymptotic theories are developed. Theoretical comparison reveals that the estimators in this class are better than, or at least competitive with, the traditional kernel estimator in a broad class of densities. The asymptotically best estimator in this class can be obtained from the elegant feature of the bias function.

The light scalar meson spectrum is studied using the improved ladder QCD with the UA(1) breaking Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft interaction by solving the Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations. The dynamically generated momentum-dependent quark mass is large enough in the low momentum region to give rise to the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. Due to the large dynamical quark mass, the scalar mesons become the q bar{q} bound states. Since the parameters have been all fixed to reproduce the light pseudoscalar meson masses and the decay constant, there is no free parameter in the calculation of the scalar mesons. We obtain $M_{sigma} = 667$ MeV, $M_{a_0} = 942$ MeV and $M_{f_0} = 1336$ MeV. They are in good agreement with the observed masses of $sigma(600)$, $a_0(980)$ and $f_0(1370)$, respectively. We therefore conclude that these states are the members of the light scalar meson nonet. The mass of $K_0^{*}$ is obtained between that of $a_0$ and $f_0$ and the corresponding state is not observed experimentally. We also find that the strangeness content in the $sigma$ meson is about 5%.

We study the O(N) symmetric linear sigma model at finite temperature as the low-energy effective models of quantum chromodynamics(QCD) using the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis(CJT) effective action for composite operators. It has so far been claimed that the Nambu-Goldstone theorem is not satisfied at finite temperature in this framework unless the large N limit in the O(N) symmetry is taken. We show that this is not the case. The pion is always massless below the critical temperature, if one determines the propagator within the form such that the symmetry of the system is conserved, and defines the pion mass as the curvature of the effective potential. We use a new renormalization prescription for the CJT effective potential in the Hartree-Fock approximation. A numerical study of the Schwinger-Dyson equation and the gap equation is carried out including the thermal and quantum loops. We point out a problem in the derivation of the sigma meson mass without quantum correction at finite temperature. A problem about the order of the phase transition in this approach is also discussed.

Combining the one gluon exchange interaction, the rainbow like Schwinger-Dyson equation and the ladder like Bethe-Salpeter equation are derived. The anomalous PCAC relation in the framework of this approximation is considered. The masses of the pseudoscalar mesons pi,eta and eta' are calculated. It is found that the pion mass is not sensitive to the strength of the flavor mixing interaction. On the other hand, the masses of eta and eta' are reproduced by a relatively weak flavor mixing interaction, for which the chiral symmetry breaking is dominantly induced by the soft-gluon exchange interaction. The decay constants are calculated and the anomalous PCAC relation is numerically checked. It is found that the flavor structures of the eta and eta' mesons significantly depend on their masses and therefore it is quetionable to define a flavor mixing angle for eta and eta'.

The Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) method is applied to finite temperature systems for the study of non-perturbative methods in the field theory. We choose the O(N) linear sigma model as the first step. Under the local potential approximation, we solve the Wilsonian RG equation as a non-linear partial differential equation numerically. The evolution of the domain is taken into account using the naive cut and extrapolation procedure. Our procedure is shown to yield the correct solution obtained by the auxiliary field method in the large $N$ limit. To introduce thermal effects, we consider two schemes. One in which the sum of the Matsubara frequencies are taken before the scale is introduced is found to give more physical results. We observe a second order phase transition in both the schemes. The critical exponents are calculated and are shown to agree with the results from lattice calculations.

We study the finite quark mass effects of the low-energy QCD using the improved ladder Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations which are derived in the manner consistent with the vector and axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identities. The non-perturbative mass-independent renormalization allows us to calculate the quark condensate for a non-zero quark mass. We explicitly show that the PCAC relation holds. The key ingredients are the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action, the generalized Noether current and the introduction of the regularization function to the Lagrangian. The reasonable values of the pion mass, the pion decay constant and the quark condensate are obtained with a rather large $Λ_{QCD}$. The pion mass square and the pion decay constant are almost proportional to the current quark mass up to the strange quark mass region. It suggests that the chiral perturbation is applicable up to the strange quark mass region.
We study the validity of the approximation often used in solving the Bethe-Salpeter equations too.

Dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in effective models of QCD is studied. Introducing a cut-off function or a non-local interaction, the Noether current must be modified and thus the Ward-Takahashi identity and the PCAC relation are modified accordingly. We point out that the pion decay constant must be defined consistently with the Noether current so that the low-energy relations are satisfied. We define the proxy of the Noether current for general effective models, which is consistent with loop expansion of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action. A general formula for the pion decay constant in terms of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude is derived.
The effective Pagels-Stokar formula is proposed which is useful to estimate the decay constant without solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation.
