We propose a multi-terminal device consisting of an $s$-wave superconductor coupled to an altermagnet, to generate highly correlated spin currents via Cooper pair splitting. Remarkably, we find that the correlated spin currents are induced by specular Andreev reflections in the altermagnet, an effect that has up to now been predicted to occur only in a very limited number of systems, e.g., Dirac/Weyl materials coupled to superconductors. We demonstrate that positive non-local charge currents and positive noise cross-correlations are unambiguous fingerprints of the specular Andreev reflections in our proposed device.

An analysis of solar neutrino data from the fourth phase of Super-Kamiokande~(SK-IV) from October 2008 to May 2018 is performed and the results are presented. The observation time of the data set of SK-IV corresponds to $2970$~days and the total live time for all four phases is $5805$~days. For more precise solar neutrino measurements, several improvements are applied in this analysis: lowering the data acquisition threshold in May 2015, further reduction of the spallation background using neutron clustering events, precise energy reconstruction considering the time variation of the PMT gain. The observed number of solar neutrino events in $3.49$--$19.49$ MeV electron kinetic energy region during SK-IV is $65,443^{+390}_{-388}\,(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 925\,(\mathrm{syst.})$ events. Corresponding $\mathrm{^{8}B}$ solar neutrino flux is $(2.314 \pm 0.014\, \rm{(stat.)} \pm 0.040 \, \rm{(syst.)}) \times 10^{6}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, assuming a pure electron-neutrino flavor component without neutrino oscillations. The flux combined with all SK phases up to SK-IV is $(2.336 \pm 0.011\, \rm{(stat.)} \pm 0.043 \, \rm{(syst.)}) \times 10^{6}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. Based on the neutrino oscillation analysis from all solar experiments, including the SK $5805$~days data set, the best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters are $\rm{sin^{2} θ_{12,\,solar}} = 0.306 \pm 0.013 $ and $Δm^{2}_{21,\,\mathrm{solar}} = (6.10^{+ 0.95}_{-0.81}) \times 10^{-5}~\rm{eV}^{2}$, with a deviation of about 1.5$σ$ from the $Δm^{2}_{21}$ parameter obtained by KamLAND. The best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters obtained from all solar experiments and KamLAND are $\sin^{2} θ_{12,\,\mathrm{global}} = 0.307 \pm 0.012 $ and $Δm^{2}_{21,\,\mathrm{global}} = (7.50^{+ 0.19}_{-0.18}) \times 10^{-5}~\rm{eV}^{2}$.

Specifically, we discuss the multi-locational Majorana zero modes in a three-terminal Josephson junction consisting of topological superconductors, which forms an elemental qubit of fault-tolerant topological quantum computers. We also demonstrate anomalously long-ranged nonlocal resonant transport phenomena caused by the multi-locational Majorana zero mode.

Neutrinos associated with solar flares (solar-flare neutrinos) provide information on particle acceleration mechanisms during the impulsive phase of solar flares. We searched using the Super-Kamiokande detector for neutrinos from solar flares that occurred during solar cycles $23$ and $24$, including the largest solar flare (X28.0) on November 4th, 2003. In order to minimize the background rate we searched for neutrino interactions within narrow time windows coincident with $γ$-rays and soft X-rays recorded by satellites. In addition, we performed the first attempt to search for solar-flare neutrinos from solar flares on the invisible side of the Sun by using the emission time of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). By selecting twenty powerful solar flares above X5.0 on the visible side and eight CMEs whose emission speed exceeds $2000$ $\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ on the invisible side from 1996 to 2018, we found two (six) neutrino events coincident with solar flares occurring on the visible (invisible) side of the Sun, with a typical background rate of $0.10$ ($0.62$) events per flare in the MeV-GeV energy range. No significant solar-flare neutrino signal above the estimated background rate was observed. As a result we set the following upper limit on neutrino fluence at the Earth $\mathitΦ<1.1\times10^{6}$ $\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level for the largest solar flare. The resulting fluence limits allow us to constrain some of the theoretical models for solar-flare neutrino emission.

The present work focuses on detecting more distant supernovae whose event rate may be too small to trigger in real time, but may be identified using an offline approach. The analysis of data collected from 2008 to 2018 found no evidence of distant supernovae bursts. This establishes an upper limit of 0.29 year$^{-1}$ on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to 100 kpc at 90% C.L.. For supernovae that fail to explode and collapse directly to black holes the limit reaches to 300 kpc.

Radioactivity induced by cosmic muon spallation is a dominant source of backgrounds for $\mathcal{O}(10)~$MeV neutrino interactions in water Cherenkov detectors. In particular, it is crucial to reduce backgrounds to measure the solar neutrino spectrum and find neutrino interactions from distant supernovae. In this paper we introduce new techniques to locate muon-induced hadronic showers and efficiently reject spallation backgrounds. Applying these techniques to the solar neutrino analysis with an exposure of $2790\times22.5$~kton.day increases the signal efficiency by $12.6\%$, approximately corresponding to an additional year of detector running. Furthermore, we present the first spallation simulation at SK, where we model hadronic interactions using FLUKA. The agreement between the isotope yields and shower pattern in this simulation and in the data gives confidence in the accuracy of this simulation, and thus opens the door to use it to optimize muon spallation removal in new data with gadolinium-enhanced neutron capture detection.

A new search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) flux has been conducted at Super-Kamiokande (SK), with a $22.5\times2970$-kton$\cdot$day exposure from its fourth operational phase IV. The new analysis improves on the existing background reduction techniques and systematic uncertainties and takes advantage of an improved neutron tagging algorithm to lower the energy threshold compared to the previous phases of SK. This allows for setting the world's most stringent upper limit on the extraterrestrial $\barν_e$ flux, for neutrino energies below 31.3 MeV. The SK-IV results are combined with the ones from the first three phases of SK to perform a joint analysis using $22.5\times5823$ kton$\cdot$days of data. This analysis has the world's best sensitivity to the DSNB $\barν_e$ flux, comparable to the predictions from various models. For neutrino energies larger than 17.3 MeV, the new combined $90\%$ C.L. upper limits on the DSNB $\barν_e$ flux lie around $2.7$ cm$^{-2}$$\cdot$$\text{sec}^{-1}$, strongly disfavoring the most optimistic predictions. Finally, potentialities of the gadolinium phase of SK and the future Hyper-Kamiokande experiment are discussed.

In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $μ$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. This paper describes changes made to the water circulation system for this detector upgrade, the Gd loading procedure, detector commissioning, and the first neutron calibration measurements in SK-Gd.

The contactless estimation of the weight of a container and the amount of its content manipulated by a person are key pre-requisites for safe human-to-robot handovers. However, opaqueness and transparencies of the container and the content, and variability of materials, shapes, and sizes, make this estimation difficult. In this paper, we present a range of methods and an open framework to benchmark acoustic and visual perception for the estimation of the capacity of a container, and the type, mass, and amount of its content. The framework includes a dataset, specific tasks and performance measures. We conduct an in-depth comparative analysis of methods that used this framework and audio-only or vision-only baselines designed from related works. Based on this analysis, we can conclude that audio-only and audio-visual classifiers are suitable for the estimation of the type and amount of the content using different types of convolutional neural networks, combined with either recurrent neural networks or a majority voting strategy, whereas computer vision methods are suitable to determine the capacity of the container using regression and geometric approaches. Classifying the content type and level using only audio achieves a weighted average F1-score up to 81% and 97%, respectively. Estimating the container capacity with vision-only approaches and estimating the filling mass with audio-visual multi-stage approaches reach up to 65% weighted average capacity and mass scores. These results show that there is still room for improvement on the design of new methods. These new methods can be ranked and compared on the individual leaderboards provided by our open framework.

Both low-energy ($7-100$ MeV) and high-energy ($0.1-10^5$ GeV) samples were analyzed in order to cover a very wide neutrino spectrum. Follow-ups of 36 (out of 39) gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-2 catalog were examined; no significant excess above the background was observed, with 10 (24) observed neutrinos compared with 4.8 (25.0) expected events in the high-energy (low-energy) samples. A statistical approach was used to compute the significance of potential coincidences. For each observation, p-values were estimated using neutrino direction and LVC sky map ; the most significant event (GW190602_175927) is associated with a post-trial p-value of $7.8\%$ ($1.4σ$). Additionally, flux limits were computed independently for each sample and by combining the samples. The energy emitted as neutrinos by the identified gravitational wave sources was constrained, both for given flavors and for all-flavors assuming equipartition between the different flavors, independently for each trigger and by combining sources of the same nature.

Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants -- neutron stars and black holes -- are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokande's response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations towards a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature.

Due to a very low production rate of electron anti-neutrinos ($\barν_e$) via nuclear fusion in the Sun, a flux of solar $\barν_e$ is unexpected. An appearance of $\barν_e$ in solar neutrino flux opens a new window for the new physics beyond the standard model. In particular, a spin-flavor precession process is expected to convert an electron neutrino into an electron anti-neutrino (${ν_e\to\barν_e}$) when neutrino has a finite magnetic moment. In this work, we have searched for solar $\barν_e$ in the Super-Kamiokande experiment, using neutron tagging to identify their inverse beta decay signature. We identified 78 $\barν_e$ candidates for neutrino energies of 9.3 to 17.3 MeV in 2970.1 live days with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water (183.0 kton$\cdot$year exposure). The energy spectrum has been consistent with background predictions and we thus derived a 90% confidence level upper limit of ${4.7\times10^{-4}}$ on the $ν_e\to\barν_e$ conversion probability in the Sun. We used this result to evaluate the sensitivity of future experiments, notably the Super-Kamiokande Gadolinium (SK-Gd) upgrade.

The search used a multivariate analysis trained on simulated $n\to\bar n$ events and atmospheric neutrino backgrounds and resulted in 11 candidate events with an expected background of 9.3 events. In the absence of statistically significant excess, we derived a lower limit on $\bar n$ appearance lifetime in $^{16}$O nuclei of $3.6\times{10}^{32}$ years and on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time of $τ_{n\to\bar n} > 4.7\times10^{8}$~s at 90\% C.L..

No candidates have been found for $p\to e^+π^0$ and one candidate remains for $p\to μ^+π^0$ in the conventional 22.5 kton fiducial volume and it is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background prediction. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: $τ/B(p\to e^+π^0) > 2.4 \times 10^{34}$ years and $τ/B(p\to μ^+π^0) > 1.6 \times 10^{34}$ years at 90% confidence level.

The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. US physicists have played leading roles in the Kamiokande, Super-Kamiokande, EGADS, K2K, and T2K programs.

We present a search for an excess of neutrino interactions due to dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) annihilating in the galactic center or halo based on the data set of Super-Kamiokande-I, -II, -III and -IV taken from 1996 to 2016. We model the neutrino flux, energy, and flavor distributions assuming WIMP self-annihilation is dominant to $ν\overlineν$, $μ^+μ^-$, $b\overline{b}$, or $W^+W^-$. The excess is in comparison to atmospheric neutrino interactions which are modeled in detail and fit to data. Limits on the self-annihilation cross section $\langle σ_{A} V \rangle$ are derived for WIMP masses in the range 1 GeV to 10 TeV, reaching as low as $9.6 \times10^{-23}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 5 GeV WIMPs in $b\bar b$ mode and $1.2 \times10^{-24}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 1 GeV WIMPs in $ν\bar ν$ mode. The obtained sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande detector to WIMP masses below several tens of GeV is the best among similar indirect searches to date.

A parameterised Boolean equation system (PBES) is a set of equations that defines sets satisfying the equations as the least and/or greatest fixed-points. Thus this system is regarded as a declarative program defining predicates, where a program execution returns whether a given ground atomic formula holds or not. The program execution corresponds to the membership problem of PBESs, which is however undecidable in general.
This paper proposes a subclass of PBESs which expresses universal-quantifiers free formulas, and studies a technique to solve the problem on it. We use the fact that the membership problem is reduced to the problem whether a proof graph exists. To check the latter problem, we introduce a so-called dependency space which is a graph containing all of the minimal proof graphs. Dependency spaces are, however, infinite in general. Thus, we propose some conditions for equivalence relations to preserve the result of the membership problem, then we identify two vertices as the same under the relation. In this sense, dependency spaces possibly result in a finite graph. We show some examples having infinite dependency spaces which are reducible to finite graphs by equivalence relations. We provide a procedure to construct finite dependency spaces and show the soundness of the procedure. We also implement the procedure using an SMT solver and experiment on some examples including a downsized McCarthy 91 function.

A parameterised Boolean equation system (PBES) is a set of equations that defines sets as the least and/or greatest fixed-points that satisfy the equations. This system is regarded as a declarative program defining functions that take a datum and returns a Boolean value. The membership problem of PBESs is a problem to decide whether a given element is in the defined set or not, which corresponds to an execution of the program. This paper introduces reduced proof graphs, and studies a technique to solve the membership problem of PBESs, which is undecidable in general, by transforming it into a reduced proof graph.
A vertex X(v) in a proof graph represents that the data v is in the set X, if the graph satisfies conditions induced from a given PBES. Proof graphs are, however, infinite in general. Thus we introduce vertices each of which stands for a set of vertices of the original ones, which possibly results in a finite graph. For a subclass of disjunctive PBESs, we clarify some conditions which reduced proof graphs should satisfy. We also show some examples having no finite proof graph except for reduced one. We further propose a reduced dependency space, which contains reduced proof graphs as sub-graphs if a proof graph exists. We provide a procedure to construct finite reduced dependency spaces, and show the soundness and completeness of the procedure.

The effective thickness of the interfacial layer, which was obtained from the S-n relation, was below ~ 3 nm, which agrees well with that of the TEM observation (~1.5 nm), clearly showing that electric field modulation measurement of S-n relation can effectively clarify the carrier transport properties of a bilayer laminate structure.

The superconducting properties of two beta-pyrochlore oxides, CsOs2O6 and RbOs2O6, are studied by thermodynamic and transport measurements using high-quality single crystals. It is shown that the character of superconductivity changes systematically from weak coupling for CsOs2O6 to moderately strong coupling for RbOs2O6, and finally to extremely strong coupling with BCS-type superconductivity for KOs2O6, with increasing Tc. Strong-coupling correction analyses of the superconducting properties reveal that a low-energy rattling mode of the alkali metal ions is responsible for the mechanism of the superconductivity in each compound. The large enhancement of Tc from Cs to K is attributed to the increase in the electron-rattler coupling with decreasing characteristic energy of the rattling and with increasing anharmonicity. The existence of weak anisotropy in the superconducting gap or in the electron-rattler interactions is found for the Cs and Rb compounds.

Below the first-order transition at $T_{\rm p}\sim 8$ K, which is associated with a change in the rattling motion of K ions, the lower critical field and the remanent magnetization both show a distinct decrease, suggesting that the electron-phonon coupling is weakened below the transition. At high magnetic fields, the local induction shows an unexpectedly large jump at $T_{\rm p}$ whose sign changes with position inside the sample. Our results demonstrate a novel redistribution of vortices whose energy is reduced abruptly below the first-order transition at $T_{\rm p}$.

Below the second transition at $T_{\rm p}\sim 8$ K, the superfluid density shows a step-like change with a suppression of effective critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Concurrently, the extracted quasiparticle scattering time shows a steep enhancement, indicating a strong coupling between the anomalous rattling motion of K ions and quasiparticles. The results imply that the rattling phonons help to enhance superconductivity, and that K sites freeze to an ordered state with long quasiparticle mean free path below $T_{\rm p}$.

Superconducting and normal-state properties of the beta-pyrochlore oxide KOs2O6 are studied by means of thermodynamic and transport measurements. It is shown that the superconductivity is of conventional s-wave type and lies in the extremely strong-coupling regime. Specific heat and resistivity measurements reveal that there are characteristic low-energy phonons that give rise to unusual scattering of carriers due to strong electron-phonon interactions. The entity of the low-energy phonons is ascribed to the heavy rattling of the K ion confined in an oversized cage made of OsO6 octahedra. It is suggested that this electron-rattler coupling mediates the Cooper pairing, resulting in the extremely strong-coupling superconductivity.

Below the Metal-insulator transition temperature of the VO$_2$ thin films, $\sim 300$ K, metallic states were not observed for the interfaces with TiO$_2$, in contrast with the interfaces between the band insulator SrTiO$_3$ and the Mott insulator LaTiO$_3$ in spite of the fact that both TiO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$ are band insulators with $d^0$ electronic configurations and both VO$_2$ and LaTiO$_3$ are Mott insulators with $d^1$ electronic configurations. We discuss possible origins of this difference and suggest the importance of the polarity discontinuity of the interfaces.
