We study the effect of geometric constraints on the formation of indirect excitonic complexes with excess charge by considering the problem of two identical electrons moving in half-space subject to mutual Coulomb repulsion and the Coulomb attraction to a heavy hole of charge $Z$ residing on a flat impenetrable surface. We find that $Z=1$ is the critical charge necessary for binding, as compared to $Z_c\approx0.911$ in the unconstrained system. This suggests that interlayer electron--hole systems may serve as a flexible and experimentally accessible platform to study electronic behavior close to the critical nuclear charge necessary for binding.

We address the possibility of realizing Bose-Einstein condensation as a first-order phase transition by admixture of particles of different species. To this aim we perform a comprehensive analysis of phase diagrams of two-component mixtures of bosons at finite temperatures. As a prototype model, we analyze a binary mixture of Bose particles interacting via an infinite-range (Kac-scaled) two-body potential. We obtain a rich phase diagram, where the transition between the normal and Bose-Einstein condensed phases may be either continuous or first-order. The phase diagram hosts lines of triple points, tricritical points, as well as quadruple points. We address the structure of the phase diagram depending on the relative magnitudes of the inter- and intra-species interaction couplings. In addition, even for purely repulsive interactions, we identify a first-order liquid-gas type transition between non-condensed phases characterized by different particle concentrations. In the obtained phase diagram, a surface of such first-order transitions terminates with a line of critical points.

We construct the simplest density functional for the problem of a single impurity interacting with a Fermi gas via a long--ranged potential using the Thomas--Fermi approach. We find that the Fermi polaron is fully bosonized in two dimensions, as the model results in a suitable Landau--Pekar functional known from the Bose polaron problem which describes a self--interacting impurity. In other dimensions, the impurity self--interacts with an infinite number of its own images, and no bosonization occurs. We discuss applications of our theory for the $2d$ exciton--polaron and the ionic polaron problem and compute the effective mass for these cases, finding a self--trap** transition with order depending on the dimensionality.

On the global minimum of the energy-momentum relation for the polaron

Abstract:
For the Fröhlich model of the large polaron, we prove that the ground state energy as a function of the total momentum has a unique global minimum at momentum zero. This implies the non-existence of a ground state of the Fröhlich Hamiltonian and thus excludes the possibility of a localization transition at finite coupling.

We consider the large polaron described by the Fröhlich Hamiltonian and study its energy-momentum relation defined as the lowest possible energy as a function of the total momentum. Using a suitable family of trial states, we derive an optimal parabolic upper bound for the energy-momentum relation in the limit of strong coupling. The upper bound consists of a momentum independent term that agrees with the predicted two-term expansion for the ground state energy of the strongly coupled polaron at rest, and a term that is quadratic in the momentum with coefficient given by the inverse of twice the classical effective mass introduced by Landau and Pekar.

We study a class of polaron-type Hamiltonians with sufficiently regular form factor in the interaction term. We investigate the strong-coupling limit of the model, and prove suitable bounds on the ground state energy as a function of the total momentum of the system. These bounds agree with the semiclassical approximation to leading order. The latter corresponds here to the situation when the particle undergoes harmonic motion in a potential well whose frequency is determined by the corresponding Pekar functional. We show that for all such models the effective mass diverges in the strong coupling limit, in all spatial dimensions. Moreover, for the case when the phonon dispersion relation grows at least linearly with momentum, the bounds result in an asymptotic formula for the effective mass quotient, a quantity generalizing the usual notion of the effective mass. This asymptotic form agrees with the semiclassical Landau--Pekar formula and can be regarded as the first rigorous confirmation, in a slightly weaker sense than usually considered, of the validity of the semiclassical formula for the effective mass.

Abstract:
We consider the quantum mechanical many-body problem of a single impurity particle immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas. The impurity interacts with the bosons via a two-body potential. We study the Hamiltonian of this system in the mean-field limit and rigorously show that, at low energies, the problem is well described by the Fröhlich polaron model.

Abstract:
We discuss thermodynamic properties of harmonically trapped imperfect quantum gases. The spatial inhomogeneity of these systems imposes a redefinition of the mean-field interparticle potential energy as compared to the homogeneous case. In our approach, it takes the form $\frac{a}{2} N^2 \, ω^d$, where $N$ is the number of particles, $ω$ - the harmonic trap frequency, $d$ - system's dimensionality…

We discuss thermodynamic properties of harmonically trapped imperfect quantum gases. The spatial inhomogeneity of these systems imposes a redefinition of the mean-field interparticle potential energy as compared to the homogeneous case. In our approach, it takes the form $\frac{a}{2} N^2 \, ω^d$, where $N$ is the number of particles, $ω$ - the harmonic trap frequency, $d$ - system's dimensionality, and $a$ is a parameter characterizing the interparticle interaction. We provide arguments that this model corresponds to the limiting case of a long-ranged interparticle potential of vanishingly small amplitude. This conclusion is drawn from a computation similar to the well-known Kac scaling procedure, which is presented here in a form adapted to the case of an isotropic harmonic trap. We show that within our model, the imperfect gas of trapped repulsive bosons undergoes the Bose-Einstein condensation provided $d>1$. The main result of our analysis is that in $d=1$ the gas of attractive imperfect fermions with $a=-a_{F}<0$ is thermodynamically equivalent to the gas of repulsive bosons with $a=a_{B}>0$ provided the parameters $a_{F}$ and $a_{B}$ fulfill the relation $a_{B}+a_{F}=\hbar$. This result supplements similar recent conclusion about thermodynamic equivalence of two-dimensional uniform imperfect repulsive Bose and attractive Fermi gases.
