We present the results of an experimental study of an advanced moderate-resolution spectrograph based on a cascade of narrow-band holographic gratings. The main goal of the project is to achieve a moderately high spectral resolutionwith R up to 5000 simultaneously in the 4300-6800 A visible spectral range on a single standard CCD, together with an increased throughput. The experimental study consisted of (1) resolution and image quality tests performed using the solar spectrum; and (2) a total throughput test performed for a number of wavelengths using a calibrated lab monochromator. The measured spectral resolving power reaches values over R>4000 while the experimental throughput is as high as 55%, which is in good agreement with the modeling results. Comparing the obtained characteristics of the spectrograph under consideration with the best existing spectrographs, we conclude that the used concept can be considered a very competitive and cheap alternative to the existing spectrographs of the given class. We propose several astrophysical applications for the instrument and discuss the prospect of creating its full-scale version.

We describe the parameters of the fiber injection and the guiding unit, of the spectrograph itself, and of the detector. The identified orders and the resulting resolving power are presented. The opportunity to increase of the resolution by using a narrower slit is discussed and the corresponding loss of flux is calculated. The expected signal-to-noise ratio for a set of stars of different magnitudes was derived. Some of the first results obtained with ESpeRo are shortly described.

Radial velocity measurements, $BVR_C$ photometry, and high-resolution spectroscopy in the wavelength region from blue to near infrared are employed in order to clarify the evolutionary status of the carbon-enhanced metal-poor star HD112869 with unique ratio of carbon isotopes in the atmosphere. An LTE abundance analysis was carried out using the method of spectral synthesis and new self consistent 1D atmospheric models. The radial velocity monitoring confirmed semiregular variations with a peak-to-peak amplitude of about 10 km $s^{-1}$ and a dominating period of about 115 days. The light, color and radial velocity variations are typical of the evolved pulsating stars. The atmosphere of HD112869 appears to be less metal-poor than reported before, [Fe/H] = -2.3 $\pm$0.2 dex. Carbon to oxygen and carbon isotope ratios are found to be extremely high, C/O $\simeq$ 12.6 and $^{12}C/^{13}C \gtrsim$ 1500, respectively. The s-process elements yttrium and barium are not enhanced, but neodymium appears to be overabundant. The magnesium abundance seems to be lower than the average found for CEMP stars, [Mg/Fe] < +0.4 dex. HD112869 could be a single low mass halo star in the stage of asymptotic giant branch evolution

A time series of high-resolution spectra was observed in the optical wavelength region for the bright proto-planetary nebula IRAS22272+5435 (HD235858), along with a simultaneous monitoring of its radial velocity and $BVR_C$ magnitudes. The object is known to vary in light, color, and velocity due to pulsation with a period of 132 days. The light and color variations are accompanied by significant changes in spectral features, most of which are identified as lines of carbon-bearing molecules. According to the observations, the $C_2$ Swan system and CN Red system lines are stronger near the light minimum. A photospheric spectrum of the central star was calculated using new self-consistent atmospheric models. The observed intensity variations in the $C_2$ Swan system and CN Red system lines were found to be much larger than expected if due solely to the temperature variation in the atmosphere of the pulsating star. In addition, the molecular lines are blueshifted relative to the photospheric velocity. The site of formation of the strong molecular features appears to be a cool outflow triggered by the pulsation. The variability in atomic lines seems to be mostly due variations of the effective temperature during the pulsation cycle. The profiles of strong atomic lines are split, and some of them are variable in a time scale of a week or so, probably because of shock waves in the outer atmosphere.

The rotation curve of the Galaxy is generally thought to be flat. However, using radial velocities from interstellar molecular clouds, which is common in rotation curve determination, seems to be incorrect and may lead to incorrectly inferring that the rotation curve is flat indeed. Tests basing on photometric and spectral observations of bright stars may be misleading. The rotation tracers (OB stars) are affected by motions around local gravity centers and pulsation effects seen in such early type objects. To get rid of the latter a lot of observing work must be involved. We introduce a method of studying the kinematics of the thin disc of our Galaxy outside the solar orbit in a way that avoids these problems. We propose a test based on observations of interstellar CaII H and K lines that determines both radial velocities and distances. We implemented the test using stellar spectra of thin disc stars at galactic longitudes of 135{\degr} and 180{\degr}. Using this method, we constructed the rotation curve of the thin disc of the Galaxy. The test leads to the obvious conclusion that the rotation curve of the thin gaseous galactic disk, represented by the CaII lines, is Keplerian outside the solar orbit rather than flat.

Two observational campaigns were carried out during the eclipses of EE Cep in 2003 and 2008/9 to verify whether the eclipsing body in the system is indeed a dark disk and to understand the observed changes in the depth and durations of the eclipses. Multicolour photometric data and spectroscopic observations at both low and high resolution were collected. We numerically modelled the variations in brightness and colour during the eclipses. We tested models with different disk structure. We considered the possibility of disk precession. The complete set of observational data collected during the last three eclipses are made available to the astronomical community. Two blue maxima in the colour indices were detected during these two eclipses, one before and one after the photometric minimum. The first (stronger) blue maximum is simultaneous with a "bump" that is very clear in all the UBVRI light curves. Variations in the spectral line profiles seem to be recurrent during each cycle. NaI lines always show at least three absorption components during the eclipse minimum and strong absorption is superimposed on the H_alpha emission. These observations confirm that the eclipsing object in EE Cep system is indeed a dark, dusty disk around a low luminosity object. The primary appears to be a rapidly rotating Be star that is strongly darkened at the equator and brightened at the poles. Some of the conclusions of this work require verification in future studies: (i) a complex, possibly multi-ring structure of the disk in EE Cep; (ii) our explanation of the "bump" observed during the last two eclipses in terms of the different times of obscuration of the hot polar regions of the Be star by the disk; and (iii) our suggested period of the disk precession (~11-12 P_orb) and predicted depth of about 2 mag the forthcoming eclipse in 2014.

The star RZ Psc is one of the most enigmatic members of the UX Ori star family. It shows all properties that are typical for these stars (the light variability, high linear polarization in deep minima, the blueing effect) except for one: it lacks any signatures of youth. With the Li I line, as a rough estimate for the stellar age, we show that the "lithium" age of RZ Psc lies between the age of stars in the Pleiades (approximately 70 Myr) and the Orion (approximately 10 Myr) clusters. We also roughly estimated the age of RZ Psc based on the proper motion of the star using the Tycho-2 catalog. We found that the star has escaped from its assumed birthplace near to the Galactic plane about 30-40 Myr ago. We conclude that RZ Psc is a post-UXOr star, and its sporadic eclipses are caused by material from the debris disk.

In this paper, we present new data with interstellar C2 (Phillips bands A-X), from observations made with the Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph of the European Southern Observatory. We have determined the interstellar column densities and excitation temperatures of C2 for nine Galactic lines. For seven of these, C2 has never been observed before, so in this case the still small sample of interstellar clouds (26 lines of sight), where a detailed analysis of C2 excitation has been made, has increased significantly. This paper is a continuation of previous works where interstellar molecules (C2 and diffuse interstellar bands) have been analysed. Because the sample of interstellar clouds with C2 has increased, we can show that the width and shape of the profiles of some diffuse interstellar bands (6196 and 5797 A) apparently depend on the gas kinetic and rotational temperatures of C2; the profiles are broader because of the higher values of the gas kinetic and rotational temperatures of C2. There are also diffuse interstellar bands (4964 and 5850 A) for which this effect does not exist.

This paper addresses the question of why metal-deficient barium stars are not yellow symbiotic stars (YSyS). Samples of (suspected) metal-deficient barium (mdBa) stars and YSyS have been collected from the literature, and their properties reviewed. It appears in particular that the barium nature of the suspected mdBa stars needs to be ascertained by detailed abundance analyses. Abundances are therefore derived for two of them, HD 139409 and HD 148897, which reveal that HD 148897 should not be considered a barium star. HD 139409 is a mild barium star, with overabundances observed only for elements belonging to the first s-process peak (Y and Zr). The evidence for binarity among mdBa stars is then reviewed, using three different methods: (i) radial-velocity variations (from CORAVEL observations), (ii) Hipparcos astrometric data, and (iii) a method based on the comparison between the Hipparcos and Tycho-2 proper motions. A first-time orbit is obtained for HIP 55852, whereas evidence for the (so far unknown) binary nature of HIP 34795, HIP 76605, HIP 97874 and HIP 107478 is presented. Two stars with no evidence for binarity whatsoever (HIP 58596 and BD +3 2688) are candidates low-metallicity thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars, as inferred from their large luminosities. The reason why mdBa stars are not YSyS is suggested to lie in their different orbital period distributions: mdBa stars have on average longer orbital periods than YSyS, and hence their companion accretes matter at a lower rate, for a given mass loss rate of the giant star. The definite validation of this explanation should nevertheless await the determination of the orbital periods for the many mdBa stars still lacking periods, in order to make the comparison more significant.

The adopted atmospheric parameters correspond to an effective temperature \Tef=4475 K, a surface gravity \lgg=1.0, a microturbulent velocity \vmi=1.7 \kms, and a macroturbulent velocity \vma=4 \kms. The abundances of 43 chemical elements were determined with the method of spectrum synthesis. The large overabundances (by 1 dex relative to iron) of elements with Z$>38$ are shown to follow the same pattern as the solar r-abundances. The present HD221170 analysis confirms the non-universality of the r-process, or more exactly the observation that the astrophysical sites hosting the r-process do not always lead to a unique relative abundance distribution for the bulk Ba to Hg elements, the Pb-peak elements, and the actinides.

We present an overview of the spectral variability of the peculiar F-type hypergiant Rho Cas, obtained from our long-term monitoring campaigns over the past 8.5 years with four spectrographs in the northern hemisphere. Between 2000 June and September an exceptional variability phase occurred when the V-brightness dimmed by about a full magnitude. The star recovered from this deep minimum by 2001 April. It is the third outburst of Rho Cas on record in the last century. We observe TiO absorption bands in high-resolution near-IR spectra obtained with the Utrecht Echelle Spectrograph during the summer of 2000. TiO formation in the outer atmosphere occurred before the deep brightness minimum. Atmospheric models reveal that the effective temperature decreases by at least 3000 K, and the TiO shell is driven supersonically with Mdot ~= 5.4 10^{-2} Msun/yr. Strong episodic mass loss and TiO have also been observed during the outbursts of 1945-47 and 1985-86.
A detailed analysis of the exceptional outburst spectra is provided, by comparing with high-resolution optical spectra of the early M-type supergiants Mu Cep (Ia) and Betelgeuse (Iab). The outburst spectra indicate the formation of a low-temperature, optically thick circumstellar gas shell of 3 10^{-2} Msun during ~200 d, caused by dynamic instability of the upper atmosphere of this pulsating massive supergiant near the Eddington luminosity limit. We observe that the mass-loss rate during the outburst is of the same order of magnitude as has been proposed for the outbursts of Eta Carinae. We present calculations that correctly predict the outburst time-scale, whereby the shell ejection is driven by the release of hydrogen ionization-recombination energy.

Two approaches to abundance analysis were used, namely a ``manual'' (interactive) and a semi-automatic procedure for comparison of synthetic and observed spectra and equivalent widths. For some elements non-LTE (NLTE) calculations were carried out and the corresponding corrections have been applied. The abundance pattern of HD 32115 was found to be very close to the solar abundance pattern, and thus may be used as an abundance standard for chemical composition studies in middle and late A stars. Further, its H-alpha line profile shows no core-to-wing anomaly like that found for cool Ap stars and therefore also may be used as a standard in comparative studies of the atmospheric structures of cool, slowly rotating Ap stars. HD 37594 shows a metal deficiency at the level of -0.3 dex for most elements and triangle-like cores of spectral lines. This star most probably belongs to the Delta Scuti group.

Abstract:
We report spectral time series of the late O-type runaway supergiant HD 188209. Radial velocity variations of photospheric absorption lines with a possible quasi-period ~ 6.4 days have been detected in high-resolution echelle spectra. Night-to-night variations in the position and strength of the central emission reversal of the Ha profile occuring over ill-defined time-scales have been observed.…

We report spectral time series of the late O-type runaway supergiant HD 188209. Radial velocity variations of photospheric absorption lines with a possible quasi-period ~ 6.4 days have been detected in high-resolution echelle spectra. Night-to-night variations in the position and strength of the central emission reversal of the Ha profile occuring over ill-defined time-scales have been observed. The fundamental parameters of the star have been derived using state-of-the-art plane--parallel and unified non-LTE model atmospheres, these last including the mass-loss rate. The derived helium abundance is moderately enhanced with respect to solar, and the stellar masses are lower than those predicted by the evolutionary models. The binary nature of this star is not suggested either from Hipparcos photometry or from radial velocity curves.

The atmospheric parameters of the components were determined using all available photometric, spectrophotometric and spectral data. The abundances of 27 elements were found. The abundances of components are different. The B component, previously classified as an Hg-Mn star, does not show anomalies typical of this group such as deficit of He, Al and excess of P, Ga, but shows overabundances of heavy elements which amount up to 4-5 dex. The A component also shows moderate Mn and Ba excess. Lines of other heavy elements were not detected. Estimates of upper limits to their abundances do not permit to exclude completely the presence of fainter anomalies in the A component either.

Abstract:
A careful investigation of a CCD spectrum of the SB1 system kappa Cnc in the spectral region 3800 A - 8000 A resulted in the discovery of the lines of the secondary star. We then analyzed several short-wavelength range Reticon spectra obtained at different orbital phases to find additional radial velocities. The mass ratio is m_A/m_B = 2.2 +- 0.1 and, from binary spectrum-synthesis, the ratio of…
