We use localization to evaluate the functional integral of string field theory on AdS_2xS^2 background corresponding to the near horizon geometry of supersymmetric black holes in 4d compactifications with N=2 supersymmetry. In particular, for a theory containing n_v + 1 vector multiplets, we show that the functional integral localizes exactly onto an ordinary integral over a finite-dimensional submanifold in the field space labeling a continuous family of instanton solutions in which auxiliary fields in the vector multiplets are excited with nontrivial dependence on AdS_2 coordinates. These localizing solutions are universal in that they follow from the off-shell supersymmetry transformations and do not depend on the choice of the action. They are parametrized by n_v +1 real parameters C^I, ; I= 0,..., n_v that correspond to the values of the auxiliary fields at the center of AdS_2. In the Type-IIA frame, assuming D-terms evaluate to zero on the solutions for reasons of supersymmetry, the classical part of the integrand equals the absolute square of the partition function of the topological string as conjectured by Ooguri, Strominger, and Vafa; however evaluated at the off-shell values of scalar fields at the center of AdS_2. In addition, there are contributions from one-loop determinants, brane-instantons, and nonperturbative orbifolds that are in principle computable. These results thus provide a concrete method to compute exact quantum entropy of these black holes including all perturbative and nonperturbative corrections and can be used to establish a precise relation between the quantum degeneracies of black holes and the topological string.

All the compounds crystallize in double perovskite structure. The magnetization measurements indicate a complex magnetic ground state with strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. Resistivity of the compounds is in confirmation with hop** conduction behaviour though differences are noted especially for $x$ = 0.4 and 0.6. Most importantly, low field (50Oe) magnetization measurements display negative magnetization during the zero field cooled cycle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate presence of Co$^{2+}$/Co$^{3+}$ and Ru$^{4+}$/Ru$^{5+}$ redox couples in all compositions except $x$ = 0.5. Presence of magnetic ions like Ru$^{4+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ gives rise to additional ferromagnetic (Ru-rich) and antiferromagnetic sublattices and also explains the observed negative magnetization.

While the magnetization and conductivity increase in Co and Ru doped compounds, antiferromagnetism is seen to strengthen in the Cu doped samples. These results are explained on the basis of a competition between linear Co-O-Ru-O-Co and perpendicular Co-O-O-Co antiferromagnetic interactions and due to formation of Ru-O-Ru ferromagnetic networks.

For BPS black holes with at least four unbroken supercharges, we describe how the macroscopic entropy can be used to compute an appropriate index, which can be then compared with the same index computed in the microscopic description. We obtain exact results incorporating all higher order quantum corrections in the limit when only one of the charges, representing momentum along an internal direction, approaches infinity kee** all other charges fixed at arbitrary finite values. In this limit, we find that the microscopic index is controlled by certain anomaly coefficients whereas the macroscopic index is controlled by the coefficients of certain Chern-Simons terms in the effective action. The equality between the macroscopic and the microscopic index then follows as a consequence of anomaly inflow. In contrast, the absolute degeneracy does not have any such simple expression in terms of the anomaly coefficients or coefficients of Chern-Simons terms. We apply our analysis to several examples of spinning black holes in five dimensions and non-spinning black holes in four dimensions to compute the index exactly in the limit when only one of the charges becomes large, and find perfect agreement with the result of exact microscopic counting. Our analysis resolves a puzzle involving M5-branes wrapped on a 5-cycle in K3 x T^3.

This paper reports effect of thermally induced disorder on the magnetic properties of LaSrCoRuO6 double perovskite. While the ordered sample is antiferromagnetic, the disordered sample exhibits negative values of magnetization measured in low applied fields. Isothermal magnetization on this sample shows hysteresis due to presence of ferromagnetic interactions. Based on neutron diffraction and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) studies, these results have been interpreted to be due disorder in site occupancy of Co and Ru leading to octahedral distortions and formation of Ru-O-Ru ferromagnetic linkages. Below 150K these ferromagnetic Ru spins polarize the Co spins in a direction opposite to that of the applied field resulting in observed negative magnetization.

Cohn and C. Umans in 2003. This property TPP for a triple of group subsets, called a TPP triple, allows the group to "realize" matrix multiplication of dimensions the sizes of the subsets, with the subsets acting as indexing sets for input matrices which are embedded into the regular algebra of the group. We derive nine different disjointness casetypes for an arbitrary TPP triple, and classify these into four different disjointness classes based on an integer measure of the degree of pairwise disjointness among the subsets. Finally, we derive lower and upper bounds for the sum of sizes of the subsets forming a TPP triple, which is the additive equivalent of the multiplicative bounds originally derived by Cohn and Umans for the product of sizes of subsets forming a TPP triple.

We study exponentially suppressed contributions to the degeneracies of extremal black holes. Within Sen's quantum entropy function framework and focusing on extremal black holes with an intermediate AdS3 region, we identify an infinite family of semi-classical AdS2 geometries which can contribute effects of order exp(S_0/c), where S_0 is the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy and c is an integer greater than one. These solutions lift to the extremal limit of the SL(2,Z) family of BTZ black holes familiar from the "black hole Farey tail". We test this understanding in N=4 string vacua, where exact dyon degeneracies are known to be given by Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms. We relate the sum over poles in the Siegel upper half plane to the Farey tail expansion, and derive a "Farey tale" expansion for the dyon partition function. Mathematically, this provides a (formal) lift from Hilbert modular forms to Siegel modular forms with a pole at the diagonal divisor.

We explain why multi-centered black hole configurations where at least one of the centers is a large black hole do not contribute to the indexed degeneracies in theories with N=4 supersymmetry. This is a consequence of the fact that such configurations, although supersymmetric, belong to long supermultiplets. As a result, there is no entropy enigma in N=4 theories, unlike in N=2 theories.

We find an agreement with the macroscopic calculation of the Wald entropy in R^2 corrected supergravity theory. The two calculations have a overlap** regime of validity which is not the Cardy regime. We use this result to clarify the 4d-5d lift for black holes on Taub-NUT space. In particular, we compute sub-leading corrections to the formula S^{4d} = S^{5d}. In the microscopic analysis, this correction arises from excitations bound to the Taub-NUT space. In the macroscopic picture, the difference is accounted by a mechanism present in a higher derivative theory wherein the geometry of the Taub-NUT space absorbes some of the electric charge.

For dyons in heterotic string theory compactified on a six-torus, with electric charge vector Q and magnetic charge vector P, the positive integer I = g.c.d.(Q \wedge P) is an invariant of the U-duality group. We propose the microscopic theory for computing the spectrum of all dyons for all values of I, generalizing earlier results that exist only for the simplest case of I=1. Our derivation uses a combination of arguments from duality, 4d-5d lift, and a careful analysis of fermionic zero modes. The resulting degeneracy agrees with the black hole degeneracy for large charges and with the degeneracy of field-theory dyons for small charges. It naturally satisfies several physical requirements including integrality and duality invariance. As a byproduct, we also derive the microscopic (0,4) superconformal field theory relevant for computing the spectrum of five-dimensional Strominger-Vafa black holes in ALE backgrounds and count the resulting degeneracies.

The (asymptotic) complexity of matrix multiplication (over the complex field) is measured by a real parameter w > 0, called the exponent of matrix multiplication (over the complex field), which is defined to be the smallest real number w > 0 such that for an arbitrary degree of precision > 0, two n by n complex matrices can be multiplied using an algorithm using O(n^(w+ε)) number of non-division arithmetical operations. By the standard algorithm for multiplying two matrices, the trivial lower and upper bounds for the exponent w are 2 and 3 respectively.
W. Strassen in 1969 obtained the first important result that w < 2.81 using his result that 2 by 2 matrix multiplication could be performed using 7 multiplications, not 8, as in the standard algorithm. In 1984, V. Pan improved this to 2.67, using a variant of Strassen's approach. It has been conjectured that w = 2, but the best known result is that w < 2.38, due to D. Coppersmith and S. Winograd. In all these approaches, estimates for w depend on the number of main running steps in their algorithms.
In a recent series of papers in 2003 and 2005, H. Cohn and C. Umans put forward an entirely different approach using fairly elementary methods involving finite groups, group algebras and their representations. The author describes and proves their main results, and suggests possible ways of getting improved estimates for the exponent using their methods.

For toroidally compactified strings, the hologram has global symmetries of AdS_3 \times S^{d-1} \times T^{8-d}, (d =3,..,8), only some of which extend to local conformal symmetries. We construct the bulk string theory in detail for the particular case of d=3. The symmetries of the hologram are correctly reproduced from this exact worldsheet description in the bulk. Moreover, the central charge of the boundary Virasoro algebra obtained from the bulk agrees with the Wald entropy of the associated small black holes. This construction provides an exact CFT description of the near horizon region of small black holes both in Type-II and heterotic string theory arising from multiply wound fundamental superstrings.

The consequent instability on the open string worldsheet can be followed onto a stable non-supersymmetric configuration of D-branes which realize the metastable vacuum configuration in the field theory. The new brane configuration is shown to backreact onto the background such as to produce different boundary conditions for the string fields in the radial direction compared to the supersymmetric configuration. In the string theory, this is interpreted to mean that the supersymmetry breaking is explicit rather than spontaneous.

We describe certain special consequences of certain elementary methods from group theory for studying the algebraic complexity of matrix multiplication, as developed by H. Cohn, C. Umans et. al. in 2003 and 2005. The measure of complexity here is the exponent of matrix multiplication, a real parameter between 2 and 3, which has been conjectured to be 2. More specifically, a finite group may simultaneously "realize" several independent matrix multiplications via its regular algebra if it has a family of triples of "index" subsets which satisfy the so-called simultaneous triple product property (STPP), in which case the complexity of these several multiplications does not exceed the rank (complexity) of the algebra. This leads to bounds for the exponent in terms of the size of the group and the sizes of its STPP triples, as well as the dimensions of its distinct irreducible representations. Wreath products of Abelian with symmetric groups appear especially important, in this regard, and we give an example of such a group which shows that the exponent is less than 2.84, and could be possibly be as small as 2.02 depending on the number of simultaneous matrix multiplications it realizes.

Abstract:
We study open strings in the noncritical $c=1$ bosonic string theory compactified on a circle at self-dual radius. These strings live on D-branes that are extended along the Liouville direction ({\it FZZT} branes). We present explicit expressions for the disc two- and three-point functions of boundary operators in this theory, as well as the bulk-boundary two-point function. The expressions obta…

The expressions obtained are divergent because of resonant behaviour at self-dual radius. However, these can be regularised and renormalized in a precise way to get finite results. The boundary correlators are found to depend only on the differences of boundary cosmological constants, suggesting a fermionic behaviour. We initiate a study of the open-string field theory localised to the physical states, which leads to an interesting matrix model.

Abstract:
We present evidence that the supersymmetric matrix model of Marinari and Parisi represents the world-line theory of N unstable D-particles in type II superstring theory in two dimensions. This identification suggests that the matrix model gives a holographic description of superstrings in a two-dimensional black hole geometry.

We study non-critical superstrings propagating in $d \le 6$ dimensional Minkowski space or equivalently, superstrings propagating on the two-dimensional Euclidean black hole tensored with d-dimensional Minkowski space. We point out a subtlety in the construction of supersymmetric theories in these backgrounds, and explain how this does not allow a consistent geometric interpretation in terms of fields propagating on a cigar-like spacetime. We explain the global symmetries of the various theories by using their description as the near horizon geometry of wrapped NS5-brane configurations. In the six-dimensional theory, we present a CFT description of the four-dimensional moduli space and the global O(3) symmetry. The worldsheet action invariant under this symmetry contains both the N=2 sine-Liouville interaction and the cigar metric, thereby providing an example where the two interactions are naturally present in the same worldsheet lagrangian already at the non-dynamical level.

This article describes a new system for induction of oblique decision trees. This system, OC1, combines deterministic hill-climbing with two forms of randomization to find a good oblique split (in the form of a hyperplane) at each node of a decision tree. Oblique decision tree methods are tuned especially for domains in which the attributes are numeric, although they can be adapted to symbolic or mixed symbolic/numeric attributes. We present extensive empirical studies, using both real and artificial data, that analyze OC1's ability to construct oblique trees that are smaller and more accurate than their axis-parallel counterparts. We also examine the benefits of randomization for the construction of oblique decision trees.
