We study the mechanism of the exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet $\mathrm{Co}\mathrm{Nb}_3\mathrm{S}_6$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and magnetotransport measurements. From ARPES measurements of $\mathrm{Co}\mathrm{Nb}_3\mathrm{S}_6$ and its family compounds ($\mathrm{Fe}\mathrm{Nb}_3\mathrm{S}_6$ and $\mathrm{Ni}\mathrm{Nb}_3\mathrm{S}_6$), we find a band dispersion unique to the Co intercalation existing near the Fermi level. We further demonstrate that a slight deficiency of sulfur in $\mathrm{Co}\mathrm{Nb}_3\mathrm{S}_6$ eliminates the ferromagnetism and the AHE simultaneously while hardly changing the band structure, indicating that the weak ferromagnetism is responsible for the emergence of the large AHE. Based on our results, we propose Weyl points near the Fermi level to cause the large AHE.

There is tremendous scope for improving the energy efficiency of embedded vision systems by incorporating programmable region-of-interest (ROI) readout in the image sensor design. In this work, we study how ROI programmability can be leveraged for tracking applications by anticipating where the ROI will be located in future frames and switching pixels off outside of this region. We refer to this process of ROI prediction and corresponding sensor configuration as adaptive subsampling. Our adaptive subsampling algorithms comprise an object detector and an ROI predictor (Kalman filter) which operate in conjunction to optimize the energy efficiency of the vision pipeline with the end task being object tracking. To further facilitate the implementation of our adaptive algorithms in real life, we select a candidate algorithm and map it onto an FPGA. Leveraging Xilinx Vitis AI tools, we designed and accelerated a YOLO object detector-based adaptive subsampling algorithm. In order to further improve the algorithm post-deployment, we evaluated several competing baselines on the OTB100 and LaSOT datasets. We found that coupling the ECO tracker with the Kalman filter has a competitive AUC score of 0.4568 and 0.3471 on the OTB100 and LaSOT datasets respectively. Further, the power efficiency of this algorithm is on par with, and in a couple of instances superior to, the other baselines. The ECO-based algorithm incurs a power consumption of approximately 4 W averaged across both datasets while the YOLO-based approach requires power consumption of approximately 6 W (as per our power consumption model). In terms of accuracy-latency tradeoff, the ECO-based algorithm provides near-real-time performance (19.23 FPS) while managing to attain competitive tracking precision.

Insulator-to-metal transition in Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ has drawn keen attention because of its sensitivity to various stimulation and its potential controllability. Here, we report a direct observation of Fermi surface, which emerges upon introducing excess oxygen into an insulating Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Comparison between energy distribution curves shows that the Mott insulating gap is closed by eV-scale spectral-weight transfer with excess oxygen. Momentum-space map** exhibits two square-shaped sheets of the Fermi surface. One is a hole-like $α$ sheet around the corner of a tetragonal Brillouin zone, and the other is an electron-like $β$ sheet around the $Γ$ point. The electron occupancies of the $α$ and $β$ bands are determined to be $n_α=1.6$ and $n_β=0.6$, respectively. Our result indicates that the insulator-to-metal transition occurs selectively in $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ bands and not yet in $d_{xy}$ band. This orbital selectivity is most likely explained in terms of the energy level of $d_{xy}$, which is deeper for Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4+δ}$ than for Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_{4}$. Consequently, we found substantial differences from the Fermi surface of other ruthenates, shedding light on a unique role of excess oxygen among the metallization methods of Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$.

We investigate near-Fermi-energy (EF) element-specific electronic and spin states of ferromagnetic van der Waals (vdW) metal Fe5GeTe2. The soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) measurement provides spectroscopic evidence of localized Fe 3d band. We also find prominent hybridization between the localized Fe 3d band and the delocalized Ge/Te p bands. This picture is strongly supported from direct observation of the remarkable spin polarization of the ligand p bands near EF, using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements. The strength of XMCD signal from ligand element Te shows the highest value, as far as we recognize, among literature reporting finite XMCD signal for none-magnetic element in any systems. Combining SX-ARPES and elemental selective XMCD measurements, we collectively point an important role of giant spin polarization of the delocalized ligand Te states for realizing itinerant long-range ferromagnetism in Fe5GeTe2. Our finding provides a fundamental elemental selective view-point for understanding mechanism of itinerant ferromagnetism in low dimensional compounds, which also leads insight for designing exotic magnetic states by interfacial band engineering in heterostructures.

Using a well-focused soft X-ray synchrotron radiation beam, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was applied to a full-Heusler-type Co$_2$MnGe alloy to elucidate its bulk band structure. A large parabolic band at the Brillouin zone center and several bands that cross the Fermi level near the Brillouin zone boundary were identified in line with the results from first-principles calculations. These Fermi level crossings are ascribed to majority spin bands that are responsible for electron transport with extremely high spin polarization especially along the direction being perpendicular to the interface of magneto-resistive devices. The spectroscopy confirms there is no contribution of the minority spin bands to the Fermi surface, signifying half-metallicity for the alloy. Furthermore, two topological Weyl cones with band crossing points were identified around the $X$ point, yielding the conclusion that Co$_2$MnGe could exhibit topologically meaningful behavior such as large anomalous Hall and Nernst effects driven by the Berry flux in its half-metallic band structure.

To understand the underlying mechanism for this, we investigate the electronic structure of $\textrm{Fe}_3\textrm{Sn}_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In particular, we use both vacuum ultraviolet light (VUV) and soft x ray (SX), which allow surface-sensitive and relatively bulk-sensitive measurements, respectively, and distinguish bulk states from surface states, which should be unlikely related to the AHE. While VUV-ARPES observes two-dimensional bands mostly due to surface states, SX-ARPES reveals three-dimensional band dispersions with a periodicity of the rhombohedral unit cell in the bulk. Our data show a good consistency with a theoretical calculation based on density functional theory, suggesting a possibility that $\textrm{Fe}_3\textrm{Sn}_2$ is a magnetic Weyl semimetal.

Unconventional features of relativistic Dirac/Weyl quasi-particles in topological materials are most evidently manifested in the 2D quantum Hall effect (QHE), whose variety is further enriched by their spin and/or valley polarization. Although its extension to three dimensions has been long-sought and inspired theoretical proposals, material candidates have been lacking. Here we have discovered valley-contrasting spin-polarized Dirac fermions in a multilayer form in bulk antiferromagnet BaMnSb$_2$, where the out-of-plane Zeeman-type spin splitting is induced by the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the distorted Sb square net. Furthermore, we have observed well-defined quantized Hall plateaus together with vanishing interlayer conductivity at low temperatures as a hallmark of the half-integer QHE in a bulk form. The Hall conductance of each layer is found to be nearly quantized to $2(N+1/2)e^2/h$ with $N$ being the Landau index, which is consistent with two spin-polarized Dirac valleys protected by the strong spin-valley coupling.

Recent discovery of both gapped and gapless topological phases in weakly correlated electron systems has introduced various relativistic particles and a number of exotic phenomena in condensed matter physics. The Weyl fermion is a prominent example of three dimensional (3D), gapless topological excitation, which has been experimentally identified in inversion symmetry breaking semimetals. However, their realization in spontaneously time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking magnetically ordered states of correlated materials has so far remained hypothetical. Here, we report a set of experimental evidence for elusive magnetic Weyl fermions in Mn$_3$Sn, a non-collinear antiferromagnet that exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect even at room temperature. Detailed comparison between our angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals significant bandwidth renormalization and dam** effects due to the strong correlation among Mn 3$d$ electrons. Moreover, our transport measurements have unveiled strong evidence for the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions, namely, the emergence of positive magnetoconductance only in the presence of parallel electric and magnetic fields. The magnetic Weyl fermions of Mn$_3$Sn have a significant technological potential, since a weak field ($\sim$ 10 mT) is adequate for controlling the distribution of Weyl points and the large fictitious field ($\sim$ a few 100 T) in the momentum space. Our discovery thus lays the foundation for a new field of science and technology involving the magnetic Weyl excitations of strongly correlated electron systems.

By exploiting a paradigmatic study of the band structures as a function of their spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we draw the topological phase diagram of CeX and unambiguously reveal the topological phase transition from a trivial to a nontrivial regime in going from CeP to CeBi induced by the band inversion. The underlying mechanism of the topological phase transition is elucidated in terms of SOC in concert with their semimetallic band structures. We report a precise experimental study on the shot noise of a quantum point contact (QPC) fabricated in a GaAs/AlGaAs based high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The combination of unprecedented cleanliness and very high measurement accuracy has enabled us to discuss the Fano factor to characterize the shot noise with a precision of 1 %. We observed that the shot noise at zero magnetic field exhibits a slight enhancement exceeding the single particle theoretical prediction, and that it gradually decreases as a perpendicular magnetic field is applied. We also confirmed that this additional noise completely vanishes in the quantum Hall regime. These phenomena can be explained by the electron heating effect near the QPC, which is suppressed with increasing magnetic field.

Diamond has outstanding physical properties: the hardest known material, a wide band gap, the highest thermal conductivity, and a very high Debye temperature. In 2004, Ekimov et al. discovered that heavily boron-doped (B-doped) diamond becomes a superconductor around 4 K. Our group successfully controlled the boron concentration and synthesized homoepitaxially grown superconducting diamond films by a CVD method. By CVD method, we found that superconductivity appears when the boron concentration (nB) exceeds a metal-insulator transition concentration of 3.0x10^20 cm^-3 and its Tczero increases up to 7.4 K with increasing nB. We additionally elucidated that the holes formed at the valence band are responsible for the metallic states leading to superconductivity. The calculations predicted that the hole do** into the valence band induces strong attractive interaction and a rapid increase in Tc with increasing boron concentration. According to the calculations, if substitutional doped boron could be arranged periodically or the degree of disorder is reduced, a Tc of approximately 100 K could be achieved via minimal percent do**. In this work, we have successfully observed zero resistivity above 10 K and an onset of resistivity reduction at 25.2 K in heavily B-doped diamond film. However, the effective carrier concentration is similar to that of superconducting diamond with a lower Tc. We found that the carrier has a longer mean free path and lifetime than previously reported, indicating that this highest Tc diamond has better crystallinity compared to that of other superconducting diamond films. In addition, the susceptibility shows a small transition above 20 K in the high quality diamond, suggesting a signature of superconductivity above 20 K. These results strongly suggest that heavier carrier doped defect-free crystalline diamond could give rise to high Tc diamond.

We use core level and valence band soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SXPES) to investigate electronic structure of new BiS$_{2}$ layered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$. Core level spectra of doped samples show a new spectral feature at the lower binding energy side of the Bi 4${f}$ main peak, which may be explained by core-hole screening with metallic states near the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$). Experimental electronic structure and its ${x}$ dependence (higher binding energy shift of the valence band as well as appearance of new states near $E_{\rm F}$ having dominant Bi 6${p}$ character) were found to be consistent with the predictions of band structure calculations in general. Noticeable deviation of the spectral shape of the states near $E_{\rm F}$ from that of calculations might give insight into the interesting physical properties. These results provide first experimental electronic structure of the new BiS$_{2}$ layered superconductors.

The extremely-low-energy bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy reveals "bad metallic" states in the paramagnetic phase of the iridates, suggesting strongly renormalized metallic states above the Neel temperature as predicted by the LDA+DMFT.

We present a study of the evolution of magnetism from the quantum critical system YbRh2Si2 to the stable trivalent Yb system YbCo2Si2. Single crystals of Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 were grown for 0 < x < 1 and studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements, as well as photoemission spectroscopy. The results evidence a complex magnetic phase diagram, with a non-monotonic evolution of T_N and two successive transitions for some compositions resulting in two tricritical points. The strong similarity with the phase diagram of YbRh2Si2 under pressure indicates that Co substitution basically corresponds to the application of positive chemical pressure. Analysis of the data proves a strong reduction of the Kondo temperature T_K with increasing Co content, T_K becoming smaller than T_N for x ~ 0.5, implying a strong localization of the 4f electrons. Furthermore, low-temperature susceptibility data confirm a competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange. The series Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 provides an excellent experimental opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the magnetism at the quantum critical point in the vicinity of YbRh2Si2 where the antiferromagnetic phase disappears (T_N=>0).

The valence band spectrum of pristine picene consists of three main features with no state at the Fermi level (EF), while that of K-doped picene has three structures similar to those of pristine picene with new states near EF, consistent with the semiconductor-metal transition. The K-induced change cannot be explained with a simple rigid-band model of pristine picene, but can be interpreted by molecular orbital calculations considering electron-intramolecular-vibration interaction. Excellent agreement of the K-doped spectrum with the calculations points to importance of electron-intramolecular-vibration interaction in K-doped picene.

We have investigated the electronic structures of recently discovered superconductor FeSe by soft-x-ray and hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with high bulk sensitivity. The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF), which is demonstrated to be a coherent quasi-particle peak. Compared with the results of the band structure calculation with local-density approximation, Fe 3d band narrowing and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting an importance of the electron correlation effect in FeSe. The self energy correction provides the larger mass enhancement value (Z^-1=3.6) than in Fe-As superconductors and enables us to separate a incoherent part from the spectrum. These features are quite consistent with the results of recent dynamical mean-field calculations, in which the incoherent part is attributed to the lower Hubbard band.

Compared with results of band structure calculations, narrowing the Fe 3d band width and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting a mass enhancement due to the weak electron correlation effect. Meanwhile, Fe 2p core-level PES reveals a strong itinerant character of Fe 3d electrons. These features are very similar to those in other Fe-based high-Tc superconductors.

The assignment of valence band features using the calculated partial density of states determined that Pt 5d and B 2p contribute to the density of states at the Fermi level. The effect of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling on the band structure might have been probed, and the analysis on the effect of Pt incorporation into the system indicates the smooth evolution of electronic structures. We presented the measurements of core levels (Pd 3d, Pt 4f, and B 1s) and discussed the chemical bonding states and electronic structures from them.

Earlier comparable low-energy studies of La$_{1.4-x}$Nd$_{0.6}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ ($x = 0.10, 0.12, 0.15$) have shown strongly suppressed photoemission intensity, or absence thereof, in large parts of the Brillouin zone. Contrary to these findings we observe spectral weight at all points along the entire Fermi surface contour at low and high photon energies. No signs of strong charge modulations are found. At high photon energy, the Fermi surface shows obvious differences in shape as compared to the low-energy results presented here and in similar studies. The observed difference in shape and the high bulk-sensitivity at this photon energy suggest intrinsic electronic structure differences between the surface and bulk regions.

The measurements have been performed by means of hn-depndent bulk-sensitive soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission technique. Our experimental data evinces the bulk Fermi surface topology at kz~0 to be qualitatively different from the one observed by surface-sensitive low-energy ARPES. Furthermore, stronger kz dispersion of the circle-like gamma Fermi surface sheet is observed compared with Sr2RuO4. Thus in the paramagnetic metal phase, Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 compound is found to have rather three-dimensional electronic structure.

Soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has been performed for one of the heavy fermion system CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and a $4f$-localized ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase. The three-dimensional band structures and Fermi surface (FS) shapes of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ have been determined by soft X-ray $hν$-dependent angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The differences in the Fermi surface topology and the non-$4f$ electronic structures between CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ are qualitatively explained by the band-structure calculation for both $4f$ itinerant and localized models, respectively. The Ce valences in CeRu$_2X_2$ ($X$ = Si, Ge) at 20 K are quantitatively estimated by the single impurity Anderson model calculation, where the Ce 3d hard X-ray core-level PES and Ce 3d X-ray absorption spectra have shown stronger hybridization and signature for the partial $4f$ contribution to the conduction electrons in CeRu$_2$Si$_2$.

In the PM phase, we observe a prominent quasiparticle peak in general agreement with theory, which combines dynamical mean-field theory with the local density approximation (LDA+DMFT). The quasiparticle peak shows a significantly larger peak width and weight than in the theory. For both the PI and AFI phases, the vanadium 3d parts of the valence spectra are not simple one peak structures. For the PI phase, there is not yet a good theoretical understanding of these structures. The size of the electron removal gap increases, and spectral weight accumulates in the energy range closer to the chemical potential, when the PI to AFI transition occurs. Spectra taken in the same phases with different compositions show interesting monotonic changes as the dopant concentration increases, regardless of the dopant species. With increased Cr-do**, the AFI phase gap decreases and the PI phase gap increases.

Due to the enhanced probing depth and the use of different surface preparations we are able to distinguish surface and volume effects in the spectra. The pseudogap behavior of the intrinsic spectra and its temperature dependence give evidence for the existence of strongly bound small polarons consistent with both dc and optical conductivity. Together with other recent structural and theoretical results our findings support a picture in which the Verwey transition contains elements of a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect, stabilized by local Coulomb interaction.

The bulk-sensitive Ce 4$f$ spectral weights of various Ce compounds including CeFe$_2$, CeNi$_2$, and CeSi$_2$ were obtained with the resonant photoemission technique at the Ce 3d-edge. We found the lineshapes change significantly with the small change of the incident photon energy. Detailed analysis showed that this phenomenon results primarily from the Auger transition between different multiplet states of the Ce $\underline{3d_{5/2}}4f^2$ (bar denotes a hole) electronic configuration in the intermediate state of the resonant process. This tells us that extra care should be taken for the choice of the resonant photon energy when extracting Ce 4$f$ spectral weights from the Ce 3$d$-edge resonant photoemission spectra. The absorption energy corresponding to the lowest multiplet structure of the Ce $\underline{3d_{5/2}}4f^2$ configuration seems to be the logical choice.

The experimental peak width and weight are significantly larger than in the theory.

Abstract:
Electronic structures of very dilute Cr- or Ru-doped Nd_{1/2}A_{1/2}MnO_{3} (NAMO; A=Ca, Sr) manganites have been investigated using the Mn and Cr 2p -> 3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). All the Cr- and Ru-doped NAMO systems exhibit the clear metallic Fermi edges in the Mn e_g spectra near E_F, consistent with their metallic ground states. All the Cr- and Ru-doped NAMO systems exhibit the clear metallic Fermi edges in the Mn e_g spectra near E_F, consistent with their metallic ground states. The Cr 3d states with t^3_{2g} configuration are at ~ 1.3 eV below E_F, and the Cr e_{g} states do not participate in the formation of the band near E_F. Cr- and Ru-induced ferromagnetism and insulator-to-metal transitions can be understood with their measured electronic structures.

Abstract:
Electronic structures of Sr_2FeMoO_6 (SFMO) and Ba_2FeMoO_6 (BFMO) double perovskites have been investigated using the Fe 2p->3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and the Cooper minimum in the Mo 4d photoionization cross section. The states close to the Fermi level are found to have strongly mixed Mo-Fe t_{2g} character, suggesting that the Fe valence is far from pure 3+. The Fe 2p_{3/2}…

The states close to the Fermi level are found to have strongly mixed Mo-Fe t_{2g} character, suggesting that the Fe valence is far from pure 3+. The Fe 2p_{3/2} XAS spectra indicate the mixed-valent Fe^{3+}-Fe^{2+} configurations, and the larger Fe^{2+} component for BFMO than for SFMO, suggesting a kind of double exchange interaction. The valence-band PES spectra reveal good agreement with the LSDA+U calculation.

Abstract:
Bulk-sensitive high-resolution Ce 4f spectra have been obtained from 3d $\to$ 4f resonance photoemission measurements on La$_{1-x}$Ce$_x$Al$_2$ and La$_{1-x}$Ce$_x$Ru$_2$ for $x = 0.0, 0.04, 1.0$. The 4f spectra of low-Kondo-temperature ($T_{K}$) (La,Ce)Al$_2$ are essentially identical except for a slight increase of the Kondo peak with $x$, which is consistent with a known increase of $T_{K}$ with $x$. In contrast, the 4f spectra of high-$T_{K}$ (La,Ce)Ru$_2$ show a Kondo-like peak and also a 0.5 eV structure which increases strongly with $x$. The resonance photon-energy dependences of the two contributions are different and the origin of the 0.5 eV structure is still uncertain.

Abstract:
Raman shift dependence of charge transfer is studied in the two fulleride families of AxBa3C60 (x=0,3; A=K,Rb) and KxSm2.75C60 (x=0,3.25). It is found that the Raman spectra are essentially identical to each other for all ternary fullerides, The results show a crossover point at the boundary of t1u and t1g bands for the Raman shift dependence of charge transfer. For the t1u fullerides, the Ag(2) pinch mode follows the characteristic shift of ~6.3cm-1 per elementary charge widely observed in KxC60. The two Ag modes in t1g fullerides show a complicated behavior. An anomalous Raman shift is observed in the t1g fullerides. This anomalous Raman shift of the two Ag modes could not be explained only by charge transfer.
