The level structure of the transitional nucleus $\mathrm{^{217}Ra}$ has been extended with the addition of around 20 new transitions. The discrepancies between the placements of several transitions reported in the earlier studies are resolved. The newly-established negative-parity sequence at low excitation energies hints at the expected parity-doublet structures in this nucleus. The properties of the observed simplex bands are compared with that of similar bands in neighboring nuclei. Since the presence of parity-doublet structures reflect octupole correlations, theoretical calculations using reflection-asymmetric triaxial particle rotor model (RAT-PRM) have been performed. A comparison of the observed features of the simplex bands with the predictions of the RAT-PRM calculations suggests that $\mathrm{^{217}Ra}$ exhibits an intermediate the behavior between the extremes of spherical and octupole-deformed nuclei. The termination of the simplex bands at intermediate energies and the structures lying above reflect the dominance of the single-particle excitations at higher excitation energies.

The half-life of the 25/2$^{+}$ isomer is revisited and a value of $T_{1/2}$ = 107.5(9) ns is deduced. Evidence of a hitherto unobserved 29/2$^{+}$ isomer in $^{207}$At is presented. A systematic study of $B(E3)$ values for the transitions de-exciting the 29/2$^{+}$ isomer in the neighboring odd-$A$ At isotopes suggests a half-life in the 2$-$4.5 $μ$s range for this state in $^{207}$At. The experimental results are compared with large-scale shell-model calculations performed using the KHM3Y effective interaction in the $Z$ = 50$-$126, $N$ = 82$-$184 model space and an overall good agreement is noted between the theory and the experiment. A qualitative comparison of the excited states and the isomers with analogous states in neighboring nuclei provides further insight into the structure of $^{207}$At.

Standard techniques of $γ$-ray spectroscopy have been applied towards establishing the level structure of the nucleus. Twenty new $γ$-ray transitions have been identified therein, through $γ-γ$ coincidence measurements, and spin-parity assignments of several states have been determined or confirmed, following the angular correlation and linear polarization measurements on the observed $γ$-rays. The excited states have been interpreted in the framework of large basis shell model calculations, while comparing their calculated and experimental energies. They have been principally ascribed to proton population in the $h_{9/2}$ and $i_{13/2}$ orbitals outside the $Z = 82$ closure and neutron occupation of the $f_{5/2}$, $p_{3/2}$ and $i_{13/2}$ orbitals in the $N = 126$ shell.

A dipole sequence has been observed and investigated in the 143 Sm nucleus populated through the heavy-ion induced fusion-evaporation reaction and studied using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) as the detection system. The sequence has been established as a Magnetic Rotation (MR) band primarily from lifetime measurements of the band members using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM). A configuration based on nine quasiparticles, with highly asymmetric angular momentum blades, has been assigned to the shears band in the light of the theoretical calculations within the framework of Shears mechanism with the Principal Axis Cranking (SPAC) model. This is hitherto the maximum number of quasiparticles along with the highest asymmetricity associated with a MR band. Further, as it has followed from the SPAC calculations, the contribution of the core rotation to the angular momentum of this shears band is substantial and greater than in any other similar sequence, at least in the neighbouring nuclei. This band can thus be perceived as a unique phenomenon of shears mechanism in operation at the limits of quasiparticle excitations, as manifested in MR band-like phenomena, evolving into collectivity.

Dipole sequences in the 143 Sm nucleus have been investigated via the 124 Sn ( 24 Mg, 5n) reaction at E lab = 107 MeV using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA). The spin-parity of the associated levels have been firmly established from the spectroscopic measurement. Level lifetimes of several levels in the dipole bands have been measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. The decreasing trend of the measured B(M1) and B(E2) transition strengths in one of the sequence (DB I) spells out its origin as Magnetic Rotation (MR). The trends of B(M1) and B(E2) in DB I are reproduced well in the theoretical calculations using the Shears mechanism with the Principal Axis Cranking (SPAC) model. However, the calculations fail to reproduce the sharp rise in the B(M1)/B(E2) ratio at the highest spins in DB I and the same has been interpreted from the decreasing of the core rotation along the sequence. The experimental observations along with the the theoretical calculations for the second dipole band (DB II), indicate that the core rotation, rather than the shears mechanism, is being favored for angular momentum generation. This represents a unique observation of forking of the shears band DB I from an abrupt phase change of the core from spherical into the deformed one.

The energies of observed positive and negative parity bands agree with the predictions of the TPSM by considering triaxial deformation for the observed excited band structures. High-spin states in the doubly-odd $^{198}$Bi nucleus have been studied by using the $^{185,187}$Re($^{16}$O, xn) reactions at the beam energy of 112.5 MeV. $γ-γ$ coincidence were measured by using the INGA array with 15 Compton suppressed clover HPGe detectors. The observed levels have been assigned definite spin-parity. The high spin structure is grouped into three bands (B1, B2 and B3), of which two (B1 and B2) exhibit the properties of magnetic rotation (MR). Tilted axis cranking calculations were carried out to explain the MR bands having large multi-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated results explain the bands B1 and B2 very nicely, confirming the shears mechanism and suggest a crossing of two MR bands in both the cases. The crossing is from 6-qp to 8-qp in band B1 and from 4-qp to 6-qp in band B2, a very rare finding. A semiclassical model has also been used to obtain the particle-hole interaction strengths for the bands B1 and B2, below the band crossing.

Linearly polarized γ - rays emitted from oriented states were measured using a Compton polarimeter consisting of an array of 8 Compton-suppressed Clover detectors. Unambiguous assignments of the spin and parity have been made for most of the observed levels and changes made in the previously reported spin-parity assignments for a few levels. Shell model calculations performed with judicious truncation over the π(gdsh) valence space interpret the structure of only the low-lying levels up to Jπ = 19+ and 9-. N = 82 neutron-core breaking is found to be essential for high spin states with excitation energies Ex > 7 MeV.

The lifetime of the 3163 keV, 7/2$^-$ isomeric state in $^{35}Cl$ that decays by a stretched M2 transition to the $3/2^+$ ground state, has been re-measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, by gating on the 1185 keV transition which directly feeds this state. This eliminates the uncertainties in the measurement arising from the direct feedings from the continuum. A mean life of 0.6$^{+0.5}_{-0.2}$ ps has been obtained from the present work. This is considerably smaller than the adopted value 45.3(6) ps. Implication of this major reduction in the lifetime has been pointed out.
