Employing \emph{VI} images of NGC 2419 acquired over 17 years, light curves for most of the known variables in the field of the cluster are produced. A cluster membership analysis for about 3100 stars in the cluster field with proper motions from $Gaia$-DR3, revealed the presence of member stars as far as 140 pc from the cluster center and enabled the construction of a cleaner CMD free of field stars. It was found that RRab and RRc stars share the inter-order region in the instability strip, which is unusual for OoII clusters. Theoretical considerations confirm that Pop II cepheids are descendants of extreme ZAHB blue tail stars with very thin envelopes of about 10\% of the total mass. Member RR Lyrae stars were employed to calculate independent estimates of the mean cluster metallicity and distance; we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UV}= -1.90 \pm 0.27$ and $D=86.3 \pm 5.0$ kpc from the RRab and [Fe/H]$_{\rm UV}= -1.88 \pm 0.30$ and $D=83.1 \pm 8.1$ kpc from the RRc light curves.

In our previous study (Bhattacharyya et al., 2022), HD~54786, the optical counterpart of the MAXI J0709-159 system, was identified to be an evolved star, departing from the main sequence, based on comparisons with non-X-ray binary systems. In this paper, using color-magnitude diagram (CMD) analysis for High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) and statistical t-tests, we found evidence supporting HD 54786's potential membership in both Be/X-ray binaries (BeXRBs) and supergaint X-ray binaries (SgXBs) populations of HMXBs. Hence, our study points towards dual optical characteristics of HD~54786, as an X-ray binary star and also belonging to a distinct evolutionary phase from BeXRB towards SgXB. Our further analysis suggests that MAXI J0709-159, associated with HD 54786, exhibits low-level activity during the current epoch and possesses a limited amount of circumstellar material. Although similarities with the previously studied BeXRB system LSI +61$^{\circ}$ 235 (Coe et al., 1994) are noted, continued monitoring and data collection are essential to fully comprehend the complexities of MAXI J0709-159 and its evolutionary trajectory within the realm of HMXBs.

We present a detailed multi-wavelength study of star formation in the dwarf galaxy NGC 4395 which hosts an active galactic nucleus (AGN). From our observations with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope, we have compiled a catalogue of 284 star forming (SF) regions, out of which we could detect 120 SF regions in H$α$ observations. Across the entire galaxy, we found the extinction corrected star formation rate (SFR) in the far ultra-violet (FUV) to range from 2.0 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ to 1.5 $\times$ 10$^{-2}$ M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ with a median of 3.0 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ and age to lie in the range of $\sim$ 1 to 98 Myr with a median of 14 Myr. In H$α$ we found the SFR to range from 7.2 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ to 2.7 $\times$ 10$^{-2}$ M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ with a median of 1.7 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ and age to lie between 3 to 6 Myr with a median of 5 Myr. The stellar ages derived from H$α$ show a gradual decline with galactocentric distance. We found three SF regions close to the center of NGC~4395 with high SFR both from H$α$ and UV which could be attributed to feedback effects from the AGN. We also found six other SF regions in one of the spiral arms having higher SFR. These are very close to supernovae remnants which could have enhanced the SFR locally. We obtained a specific SFR (SFR per unit mass) for the whole galaxy 4.64 $\times$ 10$^{-10}$ yr$^{-1}$.

A five year CCD photometric \emph{VI} time-series of NGC 7006 is employed to perform a detailed analysis of the known population of variable stars. In the process we have corrected inconsistent classifications, sky coordinates and found ten new cluster member variables. An independent reddening estimate with a value $E(B-V)=0.08\pm0.05$ is made. Using Fourier decompositions of RR Lyrae light curves and well established calibrations, the cluster mean metallicity and distance [Fe/H]$_{\rm ZW}= -1.53\pm0.15$ and $41.2\pm1.4$ kpc are estimated based on an extended sample of cluster member RRab stars. Using the $Gaia$-DR3 data we performed an extensive membership analysis which leads to a clean Colour-Magnitude diagram, and hence to the identification of variables that are likely field stars, and to considerations on the variables distribution in the Horizontal Branch (HB). A double mode RR Lyrae and three CW star are discussed. The origin of CW stars from precursors in the blue tail of the HB with very thin ($\sim 0.06 \pm 0.01 M_{\odot}$) envelopes is argued. Our models indicate that the Main Sequence predecessor of RR Lyrae stars had a mass of 0.82-0.85 $M_{\odot}$ and lost about 25-35\% of its mass during the red giant branch events before settling in the HB some 12-13.5 Gyrs later.

The X-ray luminosity during the flare was around 10^(37) erg/s (MAXI), which got reduced to 10^(32) erg/s (NuSTAR) after the flare. We took low-resolution spectra of HD 54786 from HCT and VBT facilities in India, on 2022 February 1 and 2. In addition to H-alpha emission, we found emission lines of He I in the optical spectrum of this star. By comparing our spectrum of the object with those from literature we found that He I lines show variability. Using photometric study we estimate that the star is having effective temperature of 20000 K. Although HD 54786 is reported as a supergiant in previous studies, our analysis favours it to be evolving off the main sequence in the Color-Magnitude Diagram. We could not detect any infrared excess, ruling out the possibility of IR emission from a dusty circumstellar disc. Our present study suggests that HD 54786 is a Be/X-ray binary system with a compact object companion, possibly a neutron star.

This involves R-band monitoring observations of a sample of 18 blazars, that includes five flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and thirteen BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) covering the redshift range z = 0.085$-$1.184. Our observations, carried out using the 1.3 m J.C. Bhattacharya Telescope cover a total of 40 nights ($\sim$200 hrs) between the period 2016 December and 2020 March. We characterized variability using the power enhanced $F-$test. We found a duty cycle (DC) of the variability of about 11\% for FSRQs and 12\% for BL Lacs. Dividing the sample into different sub-classes based on the position of the synchrotron peak in their broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), we found DC of $\sim$16\%, $\sim$10\% and $\sim$7\% for low-synchrotron peaked (LSP), intermediate synchrotron peaked (ISP) and high synchrotron peaked (HSP) blazars. Such high DC of variability in LSP blazars could be understood in the context of the R-band tracing the falling part (contributed by high energy electrons) of the synchrotron component of the broadband SED. Also, the R-band tracing the rising synchrotron part (produced by low energy electrons) in the case of ISP and HSP blazars, could cause lesser variability in them. Thus, the observed high DC of variability in LSP blazars relative to ISP and HSP blazars is in accordance with the leptonic model of emission from blazar jets.

We present a CCD $VI$ photometric study of the globular cluster M14. Particular attention is given to the variable stars. This allowed new classifications and cluster membership considerations. New variables are reported; 3 RRc, 18 SR and 1 SX Phe. The Fourier decomposition of RR Lyrae light curves lead to the mean cluster metallicity of [Fe/H]$_{\rm ZW}= -1.3 \pm 0.2$. Several independent methods yield a mean distance of $9.36 \pm 0.16$ kpc. A Colour-Magnitude diagram outlined by the cluster members enabled a matching with theoretical predictions of isochrones and zero-age horizontal branches, whose fitting to the observations is in good agreement with the above distance and metallicity. The Oosterhoff type of M14 is confirmed as Oo-int, and the pulsating mode distribution of RR Lyrae stars on the HB shows that the bimodal region of the instability strip is shared by RRab and RRc stars. By modelling the mass loss at the RGB after the He flash events, we were able to represent the blue tail of the HB, using a core mass of 0.48 $M_{\odot}$ and total masses of 0.52-0.55 $M_{\odot}$. A progenitor star on the MS of 0.84 $M_{\odot}$ reaches the HB in about 12.5 Gyrs, consonant with previous age determinations of the cluster. Type II Cepheids of M14 may be interpreted as products of post-HB evolution, driven by the complex processes involving the burning of the very thin low mass hydrogen and helium shells of these stars and their minuscule envelopes. No evidences were found in favor of M14 being of extragalactic origin.

We report results of the dust reverberation map** (DRM) on the Seyfert 1 galaxy Z229-15 at z = 0.0273. Quasi-simultaneous photometric observations for a total of 48 epochs were acquired during the period 2017 July to 2018 December in B, V, J, H and Ks bands. The calculated spectral index (α) between B and V bands for each epoch was used to correct for the accretion disk (AD) component present in the infrared light curves. The observed α ranges between -0.99 and 1.03. Using cross correlation function analysis we found significant time delays between the optical V and the AD corrected J, H and Ks light curves. The lags in the rest frame of the source are 12.52 (+10.00/-9.55) days (between V and J), 15.63 (+5.05/-5.11) days (between V and H) and 20.36 (+5.82/-5.68) days (between V and Ks). Given the large error bars, these lags are consistent with each other. However, considering the lag between V and Ks bands to represent the inner edge of the dust torus, the torus in Z229-15 lies at a distance of 0.017 pc from the central ionizing continuum. This is smaller than that expected from the radius luminosity (R-L) relationship known from DRM. Using a constant α = 0.1 to account for the AD component, as is normally done in DRM, the deduced radius (0.025 pc) lies close to the expected R-L relation. However, usage of constant α in DRM is disfavoured as the α of the ionizing continuum changes with the flux of the source.

Time-series VI CCD photometry of the globular cluster M10 (NGC 6254) is employed to perform a detailed identification, inspection of their light curves, their classification and their cluster membership, of all the known variables reported up to 2018. The membership analysis is based on the Gaia-DR2 positions and proper motions. The metallicity of the cluster is estimated based on the sole RRc star known in the cluster. The Fourier decomposition of its light curve leads to [Fe/H]ZW=-1:59 $\pm$ 0:23 dex. The mean cluster distance, estimated by several independent methods is 5.0 $\pm$ 0.3 kpc. A multi-approach search in a region of about 10x10 arcmin2 around the cluster revealed three new variables, one SX Phe (V35) and two sinusoidal variables on the red giant branch of unclear classification (V36,V37). Modelling the HB stars is very sensitive to the stellar hydrogen shell mass, which surrounds the 0.50 M$_\odot$ helium core. To match the full stretch of the HB population, a range of total mass of 0.56 to 0.62 M$_\odot$ is required. These models support a distance of 5.35 kpc and an age of about 13 Gyrs, and hints to some individual variation of the mass loss on the uppper RGB, perhaps caused by the presence of closed magnetic field in red giants.

The Br$γ$ line in emission is detected in seven objects indicating the onset of photo-ionization in these objects. Four objects show the presence of He i line. We detect H2 emission line in the spectra of IRAS 06556+1623, IRAS 22023+5249, IRAS 18062+2410 and IRAS 20462+3416. H2 emission line ratio 1-0 S(1)/2-1 S(1) indicate that H2 is radiatively excited due to the UV radiation of hot post-AGB central stars. When compared with the recent observations by other investigators, the Br$γ$ and H2 emission fluxes varied in some of the objects. The hot post-AGB stars IRAS 22495+5134, IRAS 22023+5249, IRAS 18062+2410 and IRAS 20462+3416 seem to be evolving rapidly to young low excitation planetary nebula phase. The spectra of the objects presented in this paper may be useful for future observers as some of these stars show spectral variation and since the post-AGB evolution of some of these stars is relatively rapid.

Abundances are found to be solar, except for a low Si abundance in IRAS 19336-0400 and a mild CNO pattern in LSE 163, that rotates at an unusual large rotational velocity for its spectral classification. Combining the stellar parameters information with Gaia DR2 data we are able to derive absolute magnitudes, radii and luminosities and clarify the possible post-AGB nature of the objects. IRAS 17460-3114 and IRAS 18131-3008 are found to be massive OB stars, whereas IRAS 19336-0400 is found to be a post-AGB star, already showing nebular lines in the spectrum. However, we could not confirm the nature of LSE 45 and LSE 163 as post-AGB stars, although their parameters are much more inconsistent with those of massive stars. In both cases, we find a discrepancy between the spectroscopic mass and that derived from the predictions of post-AGB evolutionary tracks. In addition, LSE 45 lacks nebular lines, that are present in IRAS 19336-0400 at a similar temperature. In the case of LSE 163 the rotational velocity (259+/-15 km/s) would be extremely large for a star evolving to CSPN. The combination of this rotational velocity, the high Galactic latitude, slightly large radial velocity and mild CNO enhancement suggests a history of binary interaction.

We present an analysis of $\emph{VI}$ CCD time series photometry of globular cluster NGC 6712. Our main goal is to study the variable star population as indicators of the cluster mean physical parameters. We employed the Fourier decomposition of RR Lyrae light curves to confirm that $[\rm Fe/H]_{UVES} = -1.0 \pm 0.05$ is a solid estimate. We estimated the reddening to the cluster as $E(B-V)$ = 0.35 $\pm$ 0.04 from the RRab stars colour curves. The distance to the cluster was estimated using three independent methods which yielded a weighted mean distance $\big < d \big>$ = 8.1 $\pm$ 0.2 kpc. The distribution of RRab and RRc stars on the HB shows a clear segregation around the first overtone red edge of the instability strip, which seems to be a common feature in OoI-type cluster with a very red horizontal branch. We carried out a membership analysis of 60,447 stars in our FoV using the data from $Gaia$-DR2 and found 1529 likely members; we possess the light curves of 1100 among the member stars. This allowed us to produce a clean colour-magnitude diagram, consistent with an age of 12 Gyrs, and enabled us to discover close unresolved contaminants for several variable stars. From the proper motion analysis we found evidence of non-member stars in the FoV of the cluster being tidally affected by the gravitational pull of the bulge of the Galaxy. We found that the RRab variable V6, shows a previously undetected Blazhko effect. Finally, we report sixteen new variables of the EW-type (9) and SR-type (7).

High-resolution optical spectra were obtained in 2017-2019 with The Southern African Large Telescope of fifteen stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. Interstellar Ca ii H and K and Na i D lines are discussed in this paper. In particular, the line profiles are compared with profiles at a comparable spectral resolution obtained in 1993-1996 by Cha & Sembach. Ten of the lines of sight show changes to one or more of the components in that line of sight. Changes include small changes (1-2 km/s) in radial velocity and/or increases/decreases in equivalent width over the two decades between the periods of observation. Changes are more obvious in the Ca K line than in the Na D lines. These changes are attributed to gas disturbed by interactions between the supernova ejecta and the surrounding interstellar medium. A representative timescale may be 20-50 years. Small-scale variations in line profiles across the face of the remnant suggest, as previously remarked, that a linear scale for interactions is a small fraction of the 40 pc size of the present remnant.

We present the results from $VI$ CCD time-series photometry of the globular cluster M13 (NGC 6205). From the Fourier decomposition of the light curves of RRab and RRc stars we found an average metallicity of [Fe/H]zw = -1.58 $\pm$ 0.09. The distance to the cluster was estimated as 7.1 $\pm$ 0.1 kpc from independent methods related to the variable star families RR Lyrae, SX Phe and W Virginis, from the luminosity of the theoretical ZAHB and from the orbit solution of a newly discovered contact binary star. The RR Lyrae pulsation modes are segregated by the red edge of the first overtone instability strip in this OoII type cluster. A membership analysis of 52,800 stars in the field of the cluster is presented based on \textit{Gaia}-DR2 proper motions which enabled the recognition of 23,070 likely cluster members, for 7,630 of which we possess $VI$ photometry. The identification of member stars allowed the construction of a clean CMD and a proper ZAHB and isochrone fitting, consistent with a reddening, age and distance of 0.02 mag, 12.6 Gyrs and 7.1 kpc respectively. We report seven new variables; one RRc, two SX Phe stars, three SR and one contact binary. V31 presents double-mode nature and we confirm V36 as RRd. Fifteen variable star candidates are also reported. The analysis of eighteen stars in the field of the cluster, reported as RR Lyrae from the $Gaia$-DR2 data base reveals that at least seven are not variable. We noted the presence of a high velocity star in the field of the cluster.

A $V/(V-I)$ colour-magnitude diagram, built exclusively with likely star members, shows consistency with the above parameters and an age of 12 Gyrs. A search of variable stars in the field of view of our images revealed the variability of a red giant cluster member and of three probably non-member stars; two RRab stars and one W Virginis star or CW. The GAIA proper motions of member stars in Pal 13 show a significant scatter, consistent with the scenario of the cluster being tidally stripped.

We present an analysis of VI CCD time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 6171. The main goal is to determine individual physical parameters for single-mode RR Lyrae stars present in the field of view of our images, by means of light curve Fourier decomposition and well-established calibrations and zero-points. This leads to the estimation of the mean values of the metallicity and distance for the parental cluster. From the RRab stars we find [Fe/H]ZW = -1.33 +- 0.12 and a distance d = 5.3 +- 0.3 kpc and from the RRc stars we find [Fe/H]ZW = -1.02 +- 0.19 and a distance d = 5.3 +- 0.2 kpc. Independent methods, such as the P-L relations for RRab and SX Phe stars enable the estimation of a weighted average distance to the cluster of 5.4 +- 0.1 kpc. We confirm the amplitude modulations of the Blazhko type of five RRab and the non-membership of V21 to the cluster. The colour-magnitude diagram is consistent with an age of 11 Gyrs. The distribution of RRab and RRc stars seems well segregated around the first overtone red edge of the instability strip. This positions NGC 6171 among OoI type clusters where the pulsating modes are neatly separated in the HB. We report two new irregular variables of the Lb type.

Resistivity of metastable amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) measured at device level show an exponential decline with temperature matching with the steady-state thin-film resistivity measured at 858 K (melting temperature). This suggests that the free carrier activation mechanisms form a continuum in a large temperature scale (300 K - 858 K) and the metastable amorphous phase can be treated as a super-cooled liquid. The effective activation energy calculated using the resistivity versus temperature data follow a parabolic behavior, with a room temperature value of 333 meV, peaking to ~377 meV at ~465 K and reaching zero at ~930 K, using a reference activation energy of 111 meV (3kBT/2) at melt. Amorphous GST is expected to behave as a p-type semiconductor at Tmelt ~ 858 K and transitions from the semiconducting-liquid phase to the metallic-liquid phase at ~ 930 K at equilibrium. The simultaneous Seebeck (S) and resistivity versus temperature measurements of amorphous-fcc mixed-phase GST thin-films show linear S-T trends that meet S = 0 at 0 K, consistent with degenerate semiconductors, and the dS/dT and room temperature activation energy show a linear correlation. The single-crystal fcc is calculated to have dS/dT = 0.153 μV/K for an activation energy of zero and a Fermi level 0.16 eV below the valance band edge.

The mean metallicity and distance estimated using the RRc stars are [Fe/H]$_{ZW}=-1.72\pm0.15$ and $19.05\pm0.46$ kpc respectively. The star V18, whose variability has been previously in dispute, is confirmed to be a variable of the SR type with a period of about 24.8d, and it has been used to get and independent distance estimate of the cluster. It is observed that the RRab and RRc stars do not share the inter-mode region in the horizontal branch. The cluster can be classified as of intermediate Oosterhoff type. Its horizontal branch structure and metallicity make a good case for extragalactic origin. It follows the distribution of Oo~I type globular clusters in the $M_V-$[Fe/H] plane, as depicted from the RRc stars.

We have investigated the role of a few prominent excitation mechanisms viz. collisional excitation, recombination, continuum fluorescence and Lyman beta fluorescence on the OI line spectra in Herbig Ae/Be stars. The aim is to understand which of them is the central mechanism that explains the observed OI line strengths. The study is based on an analysis of the observed optical spectra of 62 Herbig Ae/Be stars and near-infrared spectra of 17 Herbig Ae/Be stars. The strong correlation observed between the line fluxes of OI $λ$8446 and OI $λ$11287, as well as a high positive correlation between the line strengths of OI $λ$8446 and H$α$ suggest that Lyman beta fluorescence is the dominant excitation mechanism for the formation of OI emission lines in Herbig Ae/Be stars. Further, from an analysis of the emission line fluxes of OI $λλ$7774, 8446, and comparing the line ratios with those predicted by theoretical models, we assessed the contribution of collisional excitation in the formation of OI emission lines.

Based on photometric data obtained between 1935 and 2017, $O-C$ diagrams were built for 22 RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster NGC 6171, leading to the discovery of secular period changes in 4 variables for which we have calculated their period change rates $β$. In contrast we find that $82\%$ of the sample stars have stable periods over the last 82 years. For the stable period stars, the whole data base has been employed to refine their periods. Among the period changing stars, three (V10, V12 and V16) have decreasing periods larger than expected from stellar evolution. Despite these individual cases of significant period change rate, the golbal average of the measured period changes in the cluster is basically zero, in consonance with theoretical predictions for clusters with redder horizontal branches. The hitherto unpublished observations, now brought into public domain, are employed to calculate a set of times of maximum light which are used in the present analysis.

We found 12 new variables: 4 RRab, 3 SX Phe, 2 W Virginis (CW)and 3 semi-regular (SR). The inter-mode or "either-or" region in the instability strip is shared by the RRab and RRc stars. This characteristic, observed only in some OoI clusters and never seen in an OoII, is discussed in terms of mass distribution in the ZAHB.

Physical Obfuscated Keys (POKs) allow tamper-resistant storage of random keys based on physical disorder. The output bits of current POK designs need to be first corrected due to measurement noise and next de-correlated since the original output bits may not be i.i.d. (independent and identically distributed) and also public helper information for error correction necessarily correlates the corrected output bits. For this reason, current designs include an interface for error correction and/or output reinforcement, and privacy amplification for compressing the corrected output to a uniform random bit string. We propose two intrinsically reliable POK designs with only XOR circuitry for privacy amplification (without need for reliability enhancement) by exploiting variability of lithographic process and variability of granularity in phase change memory (PCM) materials. The two designs are demonstrated through experiments and simulations.

We present results of our study of PDS 11 binary system, which belongs to a rare class of isolated, high galactic latitude T Tauri stars. Our spectroscopic analysis reveals that PDS 11 is a M2-M2 binary system with both components showing similar H-alpha emission strength. Both the components appear to be accreting, and are classical T Tauri stars. The lithium doublet Li I 6708 Angstrom, a signature of youth, is present in the spectrum of PDS 11A, but not in PDS 11B. From the application of lithium depletion boundary age-dating method and a comparison with the Li I 6708 equivalent width distribution of moving groups, we estimated an age of 10-15 Myr for PDS 11A. Comparison with pre-main sequence evolutionary models indicates that PDS 11A is a 0.4 solar mass T Tauri star at a distance of 114-131 pc. PDS 11 system does not appear to be associated with any known star forming regions or moving groups. PDS 11 is a new addition, after TWA 30 and LDS 5606, to the interesting class of old, dusty, wide binary classical T Tauri systems in which both components are actively accreting.

Three stars - HD 63578, HD 68217 and HD 76161 showed large decrease in strength over the 1993-2012 interval. HD 68217 and HD 76161 are associated with the Vela SNR whereas HD 63578 is associated with $γ^2$ Velorum wind bubble. Here, we present high spectral resolution observations of Ca II K lines obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) towards these three stars along with simultaneous observations of Na I D lines. These new spectra confirm that the Na D interstellar absorption weakened drastically between 1993-1994 and 2011-2012 but show for the first time that the Ca II K line is unchanged between 1993-1994 and 2015. This remarkable contrast between the behaviour of Na D and Ca II K line absorption lines is a puzzle concerning gas presumably affected by the outflow from the SNR and the wind from $γ^2$ Velorum.

Coinciding with this high brightness state, we observed this source for photometry on 40 nights in R-band and for polarimetry on 9 epochs in UBVRI bands. During the period of our observations, the source brightness varied between $13.20 \pm 0.04$ to $14.98 \pm 0.04$ mag and the degree of polarization (P ) fluctuated between $6.0 \pm 0.3$% and $28.3 \pm 0.8$% in R-band. Focusing on intra-night optical variability (INOV), we find a duty cycle of about 71% using $χ^2$-statistics, similar to that known for blazars. From INOV data, the shortest variability time scale is estimated to be $142 \pm 38$ min yielding a lower limit of the observed Doppler factor $δ_0 = 1.17$, the magnetic field strength $B \le 3.8$ G and the size of the emitting region Rs < $2.28 \times 10^{14}$ cm. On inter-night timescales, a significant anti-correlation between R-band flux and P is found. The observed P at U-band is generally larger than that observed at longer wavelength bands suggesting a wavelength dependent polarization. Using V -band photometric and polarimetric data from Steward Observatory obtained during our monitoring period we find a varied correlation between P and V-band brightness. While an anticorrelation is seen between P and V -band mag at sometimes, no correlation is seen at other times, thereby, suggesting the presence of more than one short-lived shock components in the jet of OJ 287.

We report the distance and [Fe/H] value for the globular cluster NGC 5904 (M5) derived from the Fourier decomposition of the light curves of selected RRab and RRc stars. The aim in doing this was to bring these parameters into the homogeneous scales established by our previous work on numerous other globular clusters, allowing a direct comparison of the horizontal branch luminosity in clusters with a wide range of metallicities. Our CCD photometry of the large variable star population of this cluster is used to discuss light curve peculiarities, like Blazhko modulations, on an individual basis. New Blazhko variables are reported.
From the RRab stars we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UVES} = -1.335 \pm 0.003{\rm(statistical)} \pm 0.110{\rm(systematic)}$, and a distance of $7.6\pm 0.2$ kpc, and from the RRc stars we found [Fe/H]$_{\rm UVES}$ = $-1.39 \pm 0.03{\rm(statistical)} \pm 0.12{\rm(systematic)}$ and a distance of $7.5 \pm 0.3$ kpc. The results for RRab and RRc stars should be considered independent since they come from different calibrations and zero points. Absolute magnitudes, radii and masses are also reported for individual RR Lyrae stars. The distance to the cluster was calculated by alternative methods like the P-L relation of SX Phe and the luminosity of the stars at the tip of the red giant branch; we obtained $7.7 \pm 0.4$ and $7.2-7.5$ kpc respectively.
The distribution of RR Lyrae stars in the instability strip is discussed and compared with other clusters in connection with the Oosterhoff and horizontal branch type. The Oosterhoff type II clusters systematically show a RRab-RRc segregation about the instability strip first-overtone red edge, while the Oosterhoff type I clusters may or may not display this feature. A group of RR Lyrae stars is identified in an advanced evolutionary stage, and two of them are likely binaries with unseen companions.

Dramatic disappearance of strong absorption components at low radial velocity is seen towards three stars - HD 63578, HD 68217, HD 76161 - over 15-18 years; HD 68217 and HD 76161 are associated with the Vela SNR but HD 63578 is likely associated with the wind bubble of g2 Velorum. A new astronomical photo-polarimeter that can measure linear polarization of point sources simultaneously in three spectral bands was designed and built in Indian Institute of Astrophysics. The polarimeter has a Calcite beam-displacement prism as the analyzer. The ordinary and extra-ordinary emerging beams in each spectral band are quasi-simultaneously detected by the same photomultiplier by using a high speed rotating chopper. The effective chop** frequency can be set to as high as 200 Hz. A rotating superachromatic Pancharatnam halfwave plate is used to modulate the light incident on the analyzer. The spectral bands are isolated using appropriate dichroic and glass filters. A detailed analysis shows that the reduction of 50% in the efficiency of the polarimeter because of the fact that the intensities of the two beams are measured alternately is partly compensated by the reduced time to be spent on the observation of the sky background. The position angle of polarization produced by the Glan-Taylor prism in the light path is found to be slightly wavelength dependent, indicating that the fixed super-achromatic halfwave plate in the beam does not fully compensate for the variation in the position angle of the effective optical axis of the rotating plate. However, the total amplitude of variation in the U-I spectral region is only 0.92 degree. The polarization efficiency is also found to be wavelength-dependent with a total amplitude of 0.271% in the U-I region; its mean value is 99.211%. The instrumental polarization is found to be very low. It is nearly constant in the V-I spectral region (~0.04%), and apparently, it increases slightly towards the ultraviolet. The observations of polarized stars show that the agreement between the measured polarization values and those available in the literature to be excellent.

A rotating superachromatic Pancharatnam halfwave plate is used to modulate the light incident on the analyzer. The spectral bands are isolated using appropriate dichroic and glass filters. We show that the reduction of 50% in the efficiency of the polarimeter because of the fact that the intensities of the two beams are measured alternately is partly compensated by the reduced time to be spent on the observation of the sky background. The use of a beam-displacement prism as the analyzer completely removes the polarization of background skylight, which is a major source of error during moonlit nights, especially, in the case of faint stars. The field trials that were carried out by observing several polarized and unpolarized stars show the performance of the polarimeter to be satisfactory.

We report twelve variables not previously detected in the globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904); one SX Phe and eleven semi-regular variables (SR). Their identifications, equatorial coordinates, ephemerides, and light curves are given. Furthermore, we have explored the light curves of a group of stars whose variability has not been confirmed and that are marked as probable non- variables in the CVSGC. Finally, we offer detailed identifications for some of the known variables in crowded regions that were misidentified in previous studies. We shall also address the cases of the cataclysmic variable or U Gem type V101 and of the variable blue straggler V159.

We have done a detailed abundance analysis of four unexplored candidate post- Asymptotic Giant Branch(AGB) stars IRAS 13110 - 6629, IRAS 17579 - 3121, IRAS 18321 - 1401 and IRAS 18489 - 0629 using high resolution spectra. We have constructed Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) for these objects using the existing photometric data combined with infrared (IR) fluxes. For all sample stars, the SEDs exhibit double peaked energy distribution with well separated IR peaks showing the presence of dusty circumstellar material. The CNO abundances indicate the production of N via CN cycling, but observed [C/Fe] indicates the mixing of carbon produced by He burning by third dredge up although C/O ratio remains less that 1. A moderate DG effect is clearly seen for IRAS 18489 - 0629 and IRAS 17579 - 3121 while a large scatter observed in depletion plots for IRAS 18321 - 1401 and IRAS 13110 - 6629 indicate the presence of other processes affecting the observed abundance pattern.

Identification of metal-poor stars among field stars is extremely useful for studying the structure and evolution of the Galaxy and of external galaxies. We search for metal-poor stars using the artificial neural network (ANN) and extend its usage to determine absolute magnitudes. We have constructed a library of 167 medium-resolution stellar spectra (R ~ 1200) covering the stellar temperature range of 4200 to 8000 K, log g range of 0.5 to 5.0, and [Fe/H] range of -3.0 to +0.3 dex. This empirical spectral library was used to train ANNs, yielding an accuracy of 0.3 dex in [Fe/H], 200 K in temperature, and 0.3 dex in log g. We found that the independent calibrations of near-solar metallicity stars and metal-poor stars decreases the errors in T_eff and log g by nearly a factor of two. We calculated T_eff, log g, and [Fe/H] on a consistent scale for a large number of field stars and candidate metal-poor stars. We extended the application of this method to the calibration of absolute magnitudes using nearby stars with well-estimated parallaxes. A better calibration accuracy for M_V could be obtained by training separate ANNs for cool, warm, and metal-poor stars. The current accuracy of M_V calibration is (+-)0.3 mag. A list of newly identified metal-poor stars is presented. The M_V calibration procedure developed here is reddening-independent and hence may serve as a powerful tool in studying galactic structure.

We present optical spectra of 45 intermediate mass Herbig Ae/Be stars. Together with the multi-epoch spectroscopic and photometric data compiled for a large sample of these stars and ages estimated for individual stars by using pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks, we have studied the evolution of emission line activity in them. We find that, on average, the H_alpha emission line strength decreases with increasing stellar age in HAeBe stars, indicating that the accretion activity gradually declines during the PMS phase. This would hint at a relatively long-lived (a few Myr) process being responsible for the cessation of accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars. We also find that the accretion activity in these stars drops substantially by ~ 3 Myr. This is comparable to the timescale in which most intermediate mass stars are thought to lose their inner disks, suggesting that inner disks in intermediate mass stars are dissipated rapidly after the accretion activity has fallen below a certain level. We, further find a relatively tight correlation between strength of the emission line and near-infrared excess due to inner disks in HAeBe stars, indicating that the disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars cannot be entirely passive. We suggest that this correlation can be understood within the frame work of the puffed-up inner rim disk models if the radiation from the accretion shock is also responsible for the disk heating.

We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the type IIP supernova SN 2004et that occurred in the nearby galaxy NGC 6946. The observations span a time range of 8 days to 541 days after explosion. The late time bolometric luminosity and the H$α$ luminosity in the nebular phase indicate that $0.06\pm0.02{M_\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni was synthesised during the explosion. The plateau luminosity, its duration and the expansion velocity of the supernova at the middle of the plateau indicate an explosion energy of $E_{\rm{exp}}= 1.20^{+0.38}_{-0.30} \times 10^{51}$ ergs. The late time light curve and the evolution of the [OI] and H$α$ emission line profiles indicate the possibility of an early dust formation in the supernova ejecta.
The luminosity of [OI] 6300, 6364 Ådoublet, before the dust formation phase, is found to be comparable to that of SN 1987A at similar epochs, impling an oxygen mass in the range $1.5 - 2{M_\odot}$, and a main sequence mass of $20{M_\odot}$ for the progenitor.
