We propose a new continuous phase frequency shift keying that is particularly suited for multi-antenna communications when the link budget is critical and beam alignment is problematic. It combines the constant envelope of frequency modulation with low-rate repetition coding in order to compensate for the absence of transmit beamforming. Although it is a frequency modulation, its transmit signal shows close to rectangular spectral shape. Similar to GSM's Gaussian minimum shift keying, it can be well approximated by linear modulation, when combined with differential precoding. This allows for easy coherent demodulation by means of a windowed fast Fourier transform.

We propose Multi-Antenna (MA) Towards Inband Shift Keying (TISK): a new multi-carrier radio concept to cope with critical link budgets. In contrast to common proposals that rely on analog beamforming at both transmitter and receiver, MA-TISK does not require beam alignment. The transmitted signals have all constant envelope in continuous time, which allows for efficient, low-cost power amplification and up-conversion. The concept is compatible with any linear PSK-modulation as well as pulse position modulation. Each sub-carrier is sent over a separate antenna that is equipped with a voltage-controlled oscillator. The phases of these oscillators are controlled by digital baseband. Temporal signal combining makes up for the lack of beamforming gain at the transmitter. A common message may be broadcast to many receivers, simultaneously. Demodulation can be efficiently implemented by means of fast Fourier transform.
MA-TISK does not suffer from spectral re-growth issues plaguing other constant envelope modulations like GMSK. Almost rectangular signal spectra similar to those for linear modulation with root-raised-cosine pulse sha** are possible.
For the 100 MHz-wide spectral mask of 5G downlink, QPSK-modulation allows for 160 MBit/s with 5.74 MHz subcarrier spacing when using 16 transmit antennas. The wide carrier spacing makes the signals insensitive to Doppler effects. There is no loss in link budget gain compared to spatial beamforming at the transmitter.

This paper advances over the state-of-the art, that is based on a discrete matching pursuit (DMP) algorithm, by a step-wise optimal search. Offering significant performance gains over DMP, it is however computationally infeasible for large matrices and high accuracy. Therefore, a reduced-state algorithm is introduced that offers performance superior to DMP, while still being computationally feasible even for large matrices. Depending on the matrix size, the performance gain over DMP is on the order of at least 10%.

The base station (BS) applies receive antenna selection to connect a subset of its antennas to the available radio frequency chains. For this setting, the BS switching network, uplink precoders, and RIS phase-shifts are jointly designed, such that the uplink sum-rate is maximized. The principle design problem reduces to an NP-hard mixed-integer optimization. We hence invoke the weighted minimum mean squared error technique and the penalty dual decomposition method to develop a tractable iterative algorithm that approximates the optimal design effectively. This work proposes a novel joint receive antenna selection and precoding scheme for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output uplink transmission that relies only on the long-term statistics of the CSI. The proposed scheme designs the switching network and the uplink precoders, such that the expected throughput of the system in the long term is maximized. Invoking results from the random matrix theory, we derive a closed-form expression for the expected throughput of the system. We then develop a tractable iterative algorithm to tackle the throughput maximization problem, capitalizing on the alternating optimization and majorization-maximization (MM) techniques. Since the introduction of massive MIMO (mMIMO), the design of a transceiver with feasible complexity has been a challenging problem. Initially, it was believed that the main issue in this respect is the overall RF-cost. However, as mMIMO is becoming more and more a key technology for future wireless networks, it is realized, that the RF-cost is only one of many implementational challenges and design trade-offs. In this paper, we present, analyze and compare various novel mMIMO architectures, considering recent emerging technologies such as intelligent surface-assisted and Rotman lens based architectures. These are compared to the conventional fully digital (FD) and hybrid analog-digital beamforming (HADB) approaches. To enable a fair comparison, we account for various hardware imperfections and losses and utilize a novel, universal algorithm for signal precoding. Based on our thorough investigations, we draw a generic efficiency to quality trade-off for various mMIMO architectures. We find that in a typical cellular communication setting the reflect/transmit array based architectures sketch the best overall trade-off. Further, we show that in a qualitative ranking the power efficiency of the considered architectures is independent of the frequency range.

This manuscript goes through the fundamental connections between statistical mechanics and estimation theory by focusing on the particular problem of compressive sensing. We first show that the asymptotic analysis of a sparse recovery algorithm is mathematically equivalent to the problem of calculating the free energy of a spin glass in the thermodynamic limit. We then use the replica method from statistical mechanics to evaluate the performance in the asymptotic regime. The asymptotic results have several applications in communications and signal processing. We briefly go through two instances of these applications: Characterization of joint sparse recovery algorithms used in distributed compressive sensing, and tuning of receivers employed for detection of spatially modulated signals.

For fading links between a multi-antenna transmitter and a single-antenna receiver, we derive an accurate approximation for the distribution of the input-output mutual information when the number of reflecting elements grows large. The asymptotic results demonstrate that by increasing the number of elements on the IRS, the end-to-end channel hardens as long as the physical dimensions of the IRS grow as well. The growth rate however need not to be of a specific order and can be significantly sub-linear. The validity of the analytical result is confirmed by numerical experiments.

Inverse probability problems whose generative models are given by strictly nonlinear Gaussian random fields show the all-or-nothing behavior: There exists a critical rate at which Bayesian inference exhibits a phase transition. Below this rate, the optimal Bayesian estimator recovers the data perfectly, and above it the recovered data becomes uncorrelated. This study uses the replica method from the theory of spin glasses to show that this critical rate is the channel capacity. This interesting finding has a particular application to the problem of secure transmission: A strictly nonlinear Gaussian random field along with random binning can be used to securely encode a confidential message in a wiretap channel. Our large-system characterization demonstrates that this secure coding scheme asymptotically achieves the secrecy capacity of the Gaussian wiretap channel.

Unlike active array antennas, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are efficiently implemented at large dimensions. This allows for traceable realizations of large-scale IRS-aided MIMO systems in which not necessarily the array antennas, but the passive IRSs are large. It is widely believed that large IRS-aided MIMO settings maintain the fundamental features of massive MIMO systems, and hence they are the implementationally feasible technology for establishing the performance of large-scale MIMO settings. This work gives a rigorous proof to this belief. We show that using a large passive IRS, the end-to-end MIMO channel between the transmitter and the receiver always hardens, even if the IRS elements are strongly correlated.
For the fading direct and reflection links between the transmitter and the receiver, our derivations demonstrate that as the number of IRS elements grows large, the capacity of end-to-end channel converges in distribution to a real-valued Gaussian random variable whose variance goes to zero. The order of this drop depends on how the physical dimensions of the IRS grow. We derive this order explicitly. Numerical experiments depict that the analytical asymptotic distribution almost perfectly matches the histogram of the capacity, even in practical scenarios.
As a sample application of the results, we use the asymptotic characterization to study the dimensional trade-off between the transmitter and the IRS. The result is intuitive: For a given target performance, the larger the IRS is, the less transmit antennas are required to achieve the target. For an arbitrary ergodic and outage performance, we characterize this trade-off analytically. Our investigations demonstrate that using a practical IRS size, the target performance can be achieved with significantly small end-to-end MIMO dimensions.

Unlike the classical linear model, nonlinear generative models have been addressed sparsely in the literature of statistical learning. This work aims to bringing attention to these models and their secrecy potential. To this end, we invoke the replica method to derive the asymptotic normalized cross entropy in an inverse probability problem whose generative model is described by a Gaussian random field with a generic covariance function. Our derivations further demonstrate the asymptotic statistical decoupling of the Bayesian estimator and specify the decoupled setting for a given nonlinear model.
The replica solution depicts that strictly nonlinear models establish an all-or-nothing phase transition: There exists a critical load at which the optimal Bayesian inference changes from perfect to an uncorrelated learning. Based on this finding, we design a new secure coding scheme which achieves the secrecy capacity of the wiretap channel. This interesting result implies that strictly nonlinear generative models are perfectly secured without any secure coding. We justify this latter statement through the analysis of an illustrative model for perfectly secure and reliable inference.

The EMI is first investigated for single-stream transmission considering both cases with and without the channel state information at the transmitter. Then, the derived results are extended to the scenario of multi-stream transmission. Asymptotic analyses are performed in the regime of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The high-SNR EMI is shown to converge to a constant with its rate of convergence determined by the diversity order. On this basis, the influence of the keyhole effect on the EMI is discussed. Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) enable multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitters to modify the communication channels between the transmitters and receivers. In the presence of eavesdrop** terminals, this degree of freedom can be used to effectively suppress the information leakage towards such malicious terminals. This leads to significant potential secrecy gains in IRS-aided MIMO systems. This work exploits these gains via a tractable joint design of downlink beamformers and IRS phase-shifts. In this respect, we consider a generic IRS-aided MIMO wiretap setting and invoke fractional programming and alternating optimization techniques to iteratively find the beamformers and phase-shifts that maximize the achievable weighted secrecy sum-rate. Our design concludes two low-complexity algorithms for joint beamforming and phase-shift tuning. Performance of the proposed algorithms are numerically evaluated and compared to the benchmark. The results reveal that integrating IRSs into MIMO systems not only boosts the secrecy performance of the system, but also improves the robustness against passive eavesdrop**.

Oversampled adaptive sensing (OAS) is a Bayesian framework recently proposed for effective sensing of structured signals in a time-limited setting. In contrast to the conventional blind oversampling, OAS uses the prior information on the signal to construct posterior beliefs sequentially. These beliefs help in constructive oversampling which iteratively evolves through a sequence of time sub-frames.
The initial studies of OAS consider the idealistic assumption of full control on sensing coefficients which is not feasible in many applications. In this work, we extend the initial investigations on OAS to more realistic settings in which the sensing coefficients are selected from a predefined set of possible choices, referred to as the codebook. We extend the OAS framework to these settings and compare its performance with classical non-adaptive approaches.

This paper presents a method to calculate the exact average block error probability of some random code ensembles under maximum-likelihood decoding. The proposed method is applicable to various channels and ensembles. The focus is on both spherical and Gaussian random codes on the additive white Gaussian noise channel as well as binary random codes on both the binary symmetric channel and the binary erasure channel.
While for the uniform spherical ensemble Shannon, in 1959, argued with solid angles in $N$-dimensional space, the presented approach projects the problem into two dimensions and applies standard trigonometry. This simplifies the derivation and also allows for the analysis of the independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian ensemble which turns out to perform better for short blocklengths and high rates. Moreover, a new lower bound on the average block error probability of the uniform spherical ensemble is found. For codes with more than three codewords, it is tighter than the sphere packing bound, but requires exactly the same computing effort. Furthermore, tight approximations are proposed to simplify the computation of both the exact average error probability and the two bounds.
For the binary symmetric channel and the binary erasure channel, bounds on the average block error probability for i.i.d.\ random coding are derived and compared to the exact calculations.

We present an algorithm to reduce the computational effort for the multiplication of a given matrix with an unknown column vector. The algorithm decomposes the given matrix into a product of matrices whose entries are either zero or integer powers of two utilizing the principles of sparse recovery. While classical low resolution quantization achieves an accuracy of 6 dB per bit, our method can achieve many times more than that for large matrices. Numerical evidence suggests that the improvement actually grows unboundedly with matrix size. Due to sparsity, the algorithm even allows for quantization levels below 1 bit per matrix entry while achieving highly accurate approximations for large matrices. Applications include, but are not limited to, neural networks, as well as fully digital beam-forming for massive MIMO and millimeter wave applications.

Invoking large transmit antenna arrays, massive MIMO wiretap settings are capable of suppressing passive eavesdroppers via narrow beamforming towards legitimate terminals. This implies that secrecy is obtained almost for free in these settings. We show that this property holds not only for fully digital MIMO architectures, but also in massive MIMO settings whose transmitters employ architectures with reduced complexity. The investigations consider two dominant approaches for complexity reduction, namely antenna selection and hybrid analog-digital precoding. We show that using either approach, the information leakage normalized by the achievable sum-rate vanishes as the transmit array size grows large. For both approaches, the decaying speed is determined. The results demonstrate that, as the transmit array size grows large, the normalized leakages obtained by antenna selection and hybrid analog-digital precoding converge to zero double-logarithmically and logarithmically, respectively. These analytic derivations are confirmed for various benchmark architectures through numerical investigations.

Conventional hybrid analog-digital architectures for millimeter-wave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems suffer from poor scalability and high implementational costs. The former is caused by the high power loss in the analog network, and the latter is due to the fact that classic MIMO transmission techniques require power amplifiers with high back-offs.
This paper proposes a novel hybrid analog-digital architecture which addresses both of these challenges. This architecture implements the analog front-end via a passive reflect- or transmit-array to resolve the scalability issue. To keep the system cost-efficient, a digital precoder is designed whose peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) on each active antenna is tunable. Using the approximate message passing algorithm, this precoder is implemented with tractable computational complexity. The proposed architecture allows for the use of power amplifiers with low back-offs which reduces the overall radio frequency cost of the system. Numerical results demonstrate that for low PAPRs, significant performance enhancements are achieved compared to the state of the art.

Compressed sensing (CS) deals with the problem of reconstructing a sparse vector from an under-determined set of observations. Approximate message passing (AMP) is a technique used in CS based on iterative thresholding and inspired by belief propagation in graphical models. Due to the high transmission rate and a high molecular absorption, spreading loss and reflection loss, the discrete-time channel impulse response (CIR) of a typical indoor THz channel is very long and exhibits an approximately sparse characteristic. In this paper, we develop AMP based channel estimation algorithms for indoor THz communications. The performance of these algorithms is compared to the state of the art. We apply AMP with soft- and hard-thresholding. Unlike the common applications in which AMP with hard-thresholding diverges, the properties of the THz channel favor this approach. It is shown that THz channel estimation via hard-thresholding AMP outperforms all previously proposed methods and approaches the oracle based performance closely.

This paper proposes a distortion aware precoding scheme for realistic scenarios in which RF chains have nonlinear characteristics. The proposed scheme utilizes the method of regularized least-squares (RLS) to jointly compensate the channel impacts and the distortion imposed by the RF chains.
To construct the designed transmit waveform with low computational complexity, an iterative algorithm based on approximate message passing is developed. This algorithm is shown to track the achievable average signal distortion of the proposed scheme tightly, even for practical system dimensions. Most detection algorithms in spatial modulation (SM) are formulated as linear regression via the regularized least-squares (RLS) method. In this method, the transmit signal is estimated by minimizing the residual sum of squares penalized with some regularization. This paper studies the asymptotic performance of a generic RLS-based detection algorithm employed for recovery of SM signals. We derive analytically the asymptotic average mean squared error and the error rate for the class of bi-unitarily invariant channel matrices.
The analytic results are employed to study the performance of SM detection via the box-LASSO. The analysis demonstrates that the performance characterization for i.i.d. Gaussian channel matrices is valid for matrices with non-Gaussian entries, as well. This justifies the partially approved conjecture given in [1]. The derivations further extend the former studies to scenarios with non-i.i.d. channel matrices. Numerical investigations validate the analysis, even for practical system dimensions.

Both antenna selection and spatial modulation allow for low-complexity MIMO transmitters when the number of RF chains is much lower than the number of transmit antennas. In this manuscript, we present a quantitative performance comparison between these two approaches by taking into account implementational restrictions, such as antenna switching. We consider a band-limitedMIMO system, for which the pulse shape is designed, such that the outband emission satisfies a desired spectral mask. The bit error rate is determined for this system, considering antenna selection and spatial modulation. The results depict that for any array size at the transmit and receive sides, antenna selection outperforms spatial modulation, as long as the power efficiency is smaller than a certain threshold level. By passing this threshold, spatial modulation starts to perform superior. Our investigations show that the threshold takes smaller values, as the number of receive antennas grows large. This indicates that spatial modulation is an effective technique for uplink transmission in massive MIMO systems.

Oversampled adaptive sensing (OAS) is a recently proposed Bayesian framework which sequentially adapts the sensing basis. In OAS, estimation quality is, in each step, measured by conditional mean squared errors (MSEs), and the basis for the next sensing step is adapted accordingly. For given average sensing time, OAS reduces the MSE compared to non-adaptive schemes, when the signal is sparse. This paper studies the asymptotic performance of Bayesian OAS, for unitarily invariant random projections. For sparse signals, it is shown that OAS with Bayesian recovery and hard adaptation significantly outperforms the minimum MSE bound for non-adaptive sensing. To address implementational aspects, two computationally tractable algorithms are proposed, and their performances are compared against the state-of-the-art non-adaptive algorithms via numerical simulations. Investigations depict that these low-complexity OAS algorithms, despite their suboptimality, outperform well-known non-adaptive schemes for sparse recovery, such as LASSO, with rather small oversampling factors. This gain grows, as the compression rate increases.

In massive MIMO wiretap settings, the base station can significantly suppress eavesdroppers by narrow beamforming toward legitimate terminals. Numerical investigations show that by this approach, secrecy is obtained at no significant cost. We call this property of massive MIMO systems `secrecy for free' and show that it not only holds when all the transmit antennas at the base station are employed, but also when only a single antenna is set active. Using linear precoding, the information leakage to the eavesdroppers can be sufficiently diminished, when the total number of available transmit antennas at the base station grows large, even when only a fixed number of them are selected. This result indicates that passive eavesdrop** has no significant impact on massive MIMO systems, regardless of the number of active transmit antennas.

This paper proposes the class of Generalized Least-Square-Error (GLSE) precoders for multiuser massive MIMO systems. For a generic transmit constellation, GLSE precoders minimize the interference at user terminals assuring that given constraints on the transmit signals are satisfied. The general form of these precoders enables us to impose multiple restrictions at the transmit signal such as limited peak power and restricted number of active transmit antennas. Invoking the replica method from statistical mechanics, we study the performance of GLSE precoders in the large-system limit. We show that the output symbols of these precoders are identically distributed and their statistics are described with an equivalent scalar GLSE precoder. Using the asymptotic results, we further address some applications of the GLSE precoders; namely forming transmit signals over a restricted alphabet and transmit antenna selection. Our investigations demonstrate that a computationally efficient GLSE precoder requires $41\%$ fewer active transmit antennas than conventional selection protocols in order to achieve a desired level of input-output distortion.

The typical approach for recovery of spatially correlated signals is regularized least squares with a coupled regularization term. In the Bayesian framework, this algorithm is seen as a maximum-a-posterior estimator whose postulated prior is proportional to the regularization term. In this paper, we study distributed sensing networks in which a set of spatially correlated signals are measured individually at separate terminals, but recovered jointly via a generic maximum-a-posterior estimator. Using the replica method, it is shown that the setting exhibits the decoupling property. For the case with jointly sparse signals, we invoke Bayesian inference and propose the "multi-dimensional soft thresholding" algorithm which is posed as a linear programming. Our investigations depict that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional $\ell_{2,1}$-norm regularized least squares scheme while enjoying a feasible computational complexity.

In this paper, we study the impacts of transmit antenna selection on the secrecy performance of massive MIMO systems. We consider a wiretap setting in which a fixed number of transmit antennas are selected and then confidential messages are transmitted over them to a multi-antenna legitimate receiver while being overheard by a multi-antenna eavesdropper. For this setup, we derive an accurate approximation of the instantaneous secrecy rate. Using this approximation, it is shown that in some wiretap settings under antenna selection the growth in the number of active antennas enhances the secrecy performance of the system up to some optimal number and degrades it when this optimal number is surpassed. This observation demonstrates that antenna selection in some massive MIMO settings not only reduces the RF-complexity, but also enhances the secrecy performance. We then consider various scenarios and derive the optimal number of active antennas analytically using our large-system approximation. Optimal antenna selection is however computationally infeasible in these systems. In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm to optimize the transmit power and the subset of selected antennas subject to non-monotonous performance measures in massive multiuser MIMO settings. Numerical results are given for energy efficiency and demonstrate that for several settings the optimal number of selected antennas reported by the proposed algorithm is significantly smaller than the total number of transmit antennas. This fact indicates that antenna selection in several massive MIMO scenarios not only reduces the hardware complexity and RF-costs, but also enhances the energy efficiency of the system.

We develop a Bayesian framework for sensing which adapts the sensing time and/or basis functions to the instantaneous sensing quality measured in terms of the expected posterior mean-squared error. For sparse Gaussian sources a significant reduction in average sensing time and/or mean-squared error is achieved in comparison to non-adaptive sensing. For compression ratio 3, a sparse 10% Gaussian source and equal average sensing times, the proposed method gains about 2 dB over the performance bound of optimum compressive sensing, about 3 dB over non-adaptive 3-fold oversampled orthogonal sensing and about 6 to 7 dB to LASSO-based recovery schemes while enjoying polynomial time complexity.
We utilize that in the presence of Gaussian noise the mean-squared error conditioned on the current observation is proportional to the derivative of the conditional mean estimate with respect to this observation.

We consider a scenario in which a multi-antenna transmitter selects a subset of transmit antennas with the strongest channel gains. Confidential messages are then transmitted to a multi-antenna legitimate receiver while the channel is being overheard by a multi-antenna eavesdropper. For this setup, we approximate the distribution of the instantaneous secrecy rate in the large-system limit. The approximation enables us to investigate the optimal number of selected antennas which maximizes the asymptotic secrecy throughput of the system. We show that increasing the number of selected antennas enhances the secrecy performance of the system up to some optimal value, and that further growth in the number of selected antennas has a destructive effect. Using the large-system approximation, we obtain the optimal number of selected antennas analytically for various scenarios. User pairing in Non-Orthogonal Multiple-Access (NOMA) uplink based on channel state information is investigated considering some predefined power allocation schemes. The base station divides the set of users into disjunct pairs and assigns the available resources to these pairs. The combinatorial problem of user pairing to achieve the maximum sum rate is analyzed in the large system limit for various scenarios, and some optimum and sub-optimum algorithms with a polynomial-time complexity are proposed. In the first scenario, $2M$ users and the base station have a single-antenna and communicate over $M$ subcarriers. The performance of optimum pairing is derived for $M\rightarrow \infty$ and shown to be superior to random pairing and orthogonal multiple access techniques. In the second setting, a novel NOMA scheme for a multi-antenna base station and single carrier communication is proposed. In this case, the users need not be aware of the pairing strategy. Furthermore, the proposed NOMA scheme is generalized to multi-antenna users. It is shown that random and optimum user pairing perform similarly in the large system limit, but optimum pairing is significantly better in finite dimensions. It is shown that the proposed NOMA scheme outperforms a previously proposed NOMA scheme with signal alignment.

This paper studies the large-system performance of Least Square Error (LSE) precoders which~minimize~the~input-output distortion over an arbitrary support subject to a general penalty function. The asymptotics are determined via the replica method in a general form which encloses the Replica Symmetric (RS) and Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) ansätze. As a result, the "marginal decoupling property" of LSE precoders for $b$-steps of RSB is derived. The generality of the studied setup enables us to address special cases in which the number of active transmit antennas are constrained. Our numerical investigations depict that the computationally efficient forms of LSE precoders based on "$\ell_1$-norm" minimization perform close to the cases with "zero-norm" penalty function which have a considerable improvements compared to the random antenna selection. For the case with BPSK signals and restricted number of active antennas, the results show that RS fails to predict the performance while the RSB ansatz is consistent with theoretical bounds.

For this setup, we study the distribution of the input-output mutual information when $N_\mathrm{t}$ grows large. We show that, for any $N_\mathrm{r}$ and $L_\mathrm{t}$, the distribution of the input-output mutual information is accurately approximated by a Gaussian distribution whose mean grows large and whose variance converges to zero. Our analysis depicts that, in the large limit, the gap between the expectation of the mutual information and its corresponding upper bound, derived by applying Jensen's inequality, converges to a constant which only depends on $N_\mathrm{r}$ and $L_\mathrm{t}$. The result extends the scope of channel hardening to the general case of antenna selection with multiple receive and selected transmit antennas. A single cell downlink channel with $N$ transmit antennas at the base station and $K$ single-antenna users is considered. The data symbols are assumed to be iid Gaussian and the precoded symbols on each transmit antenna are restricted to be chosen from a predefined set $\mathbb{X}$. The set $\mathbb{X}$ encloses several well-known constraints in wireless communications including signals with peak power, constant envelope signals and finite constellations such as Phase Shift Keying (PSK). We determine the asymptotic distortion of the LSE precoder under both the Replica Symmetry (RS) and the one step Replica Symmetry Breaking (1-RSB) assumptions. For the case of peak power constraint on each transmit antenna, our analyses under the RS assumption show that the LSE precoder can reduce the peak to average power ratio to 3dB without any significant performance loss. For PSK constellations, as $N/K$ grows, the RS assumption fails to predict the performance accurately and therefore, investigations under the 1-RSB assumption are further considered. The results show that the 1-RSB assumption is more accurate.

A spatially reconfigurable antenna arrays consists of an antenna array of finite length and fixed geometry which is displaced within a given area. Using these reconfigurable components, the performance of MIMO systems is remarkably improved by effectively positioning the array in its displacement area. This paper studies the large-system performance of MIMO setups with spatially reconfigurable antenna arrays when the displacement area is large. Considering fading channels, the distribution of the input-output mutual information is derived, and the asymptotic hardening property is demonstrated to hold. As the size of the displacement area grows large, the mutual information is shown to converge in distribution to a type-one Gumbel random variable whose mean grows large proportional to the displacement size, and whose variance tends to zero. Our numerical investigations depict that the type-one Gumbel approximation closely tracks the empirical distribution even for a finite displacement size.

We introduce a class of nonlinear least square error precoders with a general penalty function for multiuser massive MIMO systems. The generality of the penalty function allows us to consider several hardware limitations including transmitters with a predefined constellation and restricted number of active antennas. The large-system performance is then investigated via the replica method under the assumption of replica symmetry. It is shown that the least square precoders exhibit the "marginal decoupling property" meaning that the marginal distributions of all precoded symbols converge to a deterministic distribution. As a result, the asymptotic performance of the precoders is described by an equivalent single-user system. To address some applications of the results, we further study the asymptotic performance of the precoders when both the peak-to-average power ratio and number of active transmit antennas are constrained. Our numerical investigations show that for a desired distortion at the receiver side, proposed forms of the least square precoders need to employ around %35\%$ fewer number of active antennas compared to cases with random transmit antenna selection.

The large-system performance of MAP estimation is studied considering a general distortion function when the observation vector is received through a linear system with additive white Gaussian noise. The analysis considers the system matrix to be chosen from the large class of rotationally invariant random matrices. We take a statistical mechanical approach by introducing a spin glass corresponding to the estimator, and employing the replica method for the large-system analysis. In contrast to earlier replica based studies, our analysis evaluates the general replica ansatz of the corresponding spin glass and determines the asymptotic distortion of the estimator for any structure of the replica correlation matrix. Consequently, the replica symmetric as well as the Replica Symmetry (RS) breaking ansatz with $b$ steps of breaking is deduced from the given general replica ansatz. The generality of our distortion function lets us derive a more general form of the MAP decoupling principle. Based on the general replica ansatz, we show that for any structure of the replica correlation matrix, the vector-valued system decouples into a bank of equivalent decoupled linear systems followed by MAP estimators. The structure of the decoupled linear system is further studied under both the RS and the Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) assumptions. For $b$ steps of RSB, the decoupled system is found to be an additive system with a noise term given as the sum of an independent Gaussian random variable with $b$ correlated impairment terms. As an application of our study, we investigate large compressive sensing systems by considering the $\ell_p$ minimization recovery schemes. Our numerical investigations show that the replica symmetric ansatz for $\ell_0$ norm recovery fails to give an accurate approximation of the mean square error as the compression rate grows, and therefore, the RSB ansätze are needed.
