In this work we analyze the electronic structure at the junction between a SrTiO3 (001) single crystal and a thin tetragonal CuO layer, grown by off-axis RF-sputtering. A detailed characterization of the film growth, based on atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron diffraction measurements, demonstrates the epitaxial growth. We report several markers of a thickness-dependent modification of the film gap, found on both Cu 2p and valence band spectra; through spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis, we provide a direct proof of a band gap increase of the tetragonal CuO layer (1.57 eV) with respect to the thicker monoclinic CuO layer (1.35 eV). This phenomenon is further discussed in the light of cluster calculations and DFT+U simulations. Finally, we report the full experimental band junction diagram, showing a staggered configuration suitable to charge-separation applications, such as photovoltaics and photocatalisys; this configuration is observed up to very low (<3 nm) film thickness due to the gap broadening effect.

The electronic properties of the Mn:GaSe interface, produced by evaporating Mn at room temperature on an epsilon-GaSe(0001) single crystal surface, have been studied by soft X-ray spectroscopies. Substitutional effects of Mn replacing Ga cations and Mn-Se hybridization effects are found both in core level and valence band photoemission spectra. The Mn cation valence state is probed by XAS measurements at the Mn L-edge, which indicate that Mn diffuses into the lattice as a Mn2+ cation with negligible crystal field effects. The Mn spectral weight in the valence band is probed by resonant photoemission spectroscopy at the Mn L-edge, which also allowed an estimation of the charge transfer and Mott-Hubbard energies on the basis of impurity-cluster configuration-interaction model of the photoemission process. The charge transfer energy is found to scale with the energy gap of the system. Competing effects of Mn segregation on the surface have been identified, and the transition from the Mn diffusion through the surface to the segregation of metallic layers on the surface has been tracked by core-level photoemission.

The magnetic properties and the spin dynamics of two molecular magnets have been investigated by magnetization and d.c. susceptibility measurements, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) over a wide range of temperature (1.6-300K) at applied magnetic fields, H=0.5 and 1.5 Tesla. The two molecular magnets consist of CuII(saldmen)(H2O)}6{FeIII(CN)6}](ClO4)38H2O in short Cu6Fe and the analog compound with cobalt, Cu6Co. It is found that in Cu6Fe whose magnetic core is constituted by six Cu2+ ions and one Fe3+ ion all with s=1/2, a weak ferromagnetic interaction between Cu2+ moments through the central Fe3+ ion with J = 0.14 K is present, while in Cu6Co the Co3+ ion is diamagnetic and the weak interaction is antiferromagnetic with J = -1.12 K. The NMR spectra show the presence of non equivalent groups of protons with a measurable contact hyperfine interaction consistent with a small admixture of s-wave function with the d-function of the magnetic ion. The NMR relaxation results are explained in terms of a single ion (Cu2+, Fe3+, Co3+) uncorrelated spin dynamics with an almost temperature independent correlation time due to the weak magnetic exchange interaction. We conclude that the two molecular magnets studied here behave as single molecule paramagnets with a very weak intramolecular interaction, almost of the order of the dipolar intermolecular interaction. Thus they represent a new class of molecular magnets which differ from the single molecule magnets investigated up to now, where the intramolecular interaction is much larger than the intermolecular one.

Nuclear magnetic resonance, electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetization measurements show that bulk Li$_x$ZnPc are strongly correlated one-dimensional metals. The temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and of the static uniform susceptibility $χ_S$ on approaching room temperature are characteristic of a Fermi liquid. Moreover, while for $x\simeq 2$ the electrons are delocalized down to low temperature, for $x\to 4$ a tendency towards localization is noticed upon cooling, yielding an increase both in $1/T_1$ and $χ_s$. The $x$-dependence of the effective density of states at the Fermi level $D(E_F)$ displays a sharp enhancement for $x\simeq 2$, at the half filling of the ZnPc lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. This suggests that Li$_x$ZnPc is on the edge of a metal-insulator transition where enhanced superconducting fluctuations could develop.

We have measured the variation of oxygen content as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure by means of thermogravimetry coupled to chemical titration analysis. On selected samples of accurately known oxygen content we have undertaken a systematic investigation of their structural, thermal and magnetic properties by means of x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and magnetometry. The overall results gained by this study confirm the central role of oxygen content on the properties of these materials suggesting that, for the Ho composition, even very slight variation of the order of delta=0.01 has a dramatic influence on the magnetic and transport properties of the samples. In addition, we have presented results showing the strategy to check the quality of samples prepared at selected oxygen contents by annealing procedures.

This study presents correlations between the structural and transport properties of pure and doped neodymium cobaltate, a compound of great interest for its foreseen applications as catalyst, sensor and thermoelectric material. Neutron and x-ray powder diffraction data have been combined to carefully determine lattice constants and atomic positions and four probe direct current conductivity and thermoelectric power measurements allowed us to follow the thermal evolution of the transport properties of these compounds. The dramatic improvement of the room temperature conductivity of Nd0.8Ca0.2CoO3 with respect to the pure and the Na-doped compound is explained in terms of a different spin-state for the Co ions within this structure. The higher conductivity and the absence of anomalies in the thermal expansion makes the Ca-doped compound more attractive than the pure NdCoO3 in view of possible applications. The experimental data and the Co environment analysis here discussed, in particular bond lengths distortion and bending angles, are fully consistent with a spin state (low to intermediate) transition in NdCoO3

The deposited films are all completely oriented and epitaxial and characterized by a nanocrystalline morphology. As-deposited films have an average roughness around 1 nm while after the thermal treatment this increases up to 20 nm while preserving the nanocrystalline morphology. All the films deposited on SrTiO3 have shown to be under a certain degree of tensile strain while those on the LaAlO3 experience a compressive strain thus suggesting that at about 50 nm the films are not fully relaxed, even after the thermal treatment. For the x=0.2 composition three different thickness have been investigated revealing an increased strain for the thinner films.

In this work we studied, by means of high-resolution neutron diffraction as a function of temperature, the La1.4Sr0.8Ca0.8Mn2O7 bilayered manganite for two different annealing treatments. Out data allowed us to shown, for the first time, the absence of long-range magnetic order in this optimally doped bilayered manganite where the A-site of the structure is doped with equal proportions of different isovalent cations (Ca and Sr). The system, however, presents defined IM transitions which suggest that the transport properties are not linked to the evolution of long-range order and that two dimensional spin ordering in the layers of the perovskite blocks may be sufficient to 'assist' the hole hop**. Possible reason for the suppression of magnetic order induced by the Ca do** is a size effect coupled to the cation size mismatch between the Sr and Ca ions.

The results of the synthesis and characterization of the optimally doped (La)1.4(Sr1-yCay)1.6Mn2O7 solid solution with y=0, 0.25 and 0.5 are reported. By progressively replacing the Sr with the smaller Ca, while kee** fixed the hole-concentration due to the divalent dopant, the 'size effect' of the cation itself on the structural, transport and magnetic properties of the bilayered manganite has been analysed. Two different annealing treatments of the solid solution, in pure oxygen and in pure argon, allowed also to study the effect of the oxygen content variation. Structure and electronic properties of the samples have been investigated by means of X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. Magnetoresistivity and static magnetization measurements have been carried out to complete the samples characterization. Oxygen annealing of the solid solution, that showed a limit for about y=0.5, induces an increase of the Mn average valence state and a transition of the crystal structure from tetragonal to orthorhombic while the argon annealing induces an oxygen under-stoichiometry and, in turn, a reduction of the Mn average valence state. Along with the Ca substitution, the Jahn-Teller distortion of the MnO6 octahedra is reduced. This has been directly connected to a general enhancement of the transport properties induced by the Ca-do**. For the same cation composition, oxygen over-stoichiometry leads to higher metal-insulator transition temperatures and lower resistivity values. Curie temperatures (TC) reduce by increasing the Ca-do**. The lower TC for all the annealed samples with respect to the 'as prepared' ones are connected to the strong influence on the magnetic interaction of the point defects due to the oxygen content variation.

Our investigation has shown that highly oriented single phase thin films of NCO and NSCO can be successfully deposited by means of rf-sputtering if the substrates is heated at high temperatures (700C); lower substrate temperature has shown to lead to multi-phase materials with a low crystallinity degree . LAO substrate showed to give origin to a prefect match of the out-of-plane lattice constant of the NSCO target material.

La1-xCaxMnO3+delta and La1-xNaxMnO3+delta samples with well defined cation molecularity and oxygen contents are analyzed with XRPD, electrical conductivity, electron paramagnetic resonance and static magnetization measurements. Point defects are introduced in the structure by: i) aliovalent cation do** (substitutional defects), ii) oxygen over-stoichiometry (cation vacancies) and iii) oxygen under-stoichiometry (oxygen vacancies). The cation do** mainly influences the material by affecting the tolerance factor and the oxidation of the Mn ions; the cation vacancies affect the magnetic properties by interrupting the interaction paths between Mn4+-Mn3+ ions whereas the oxygen vacancies have a stronger influence on the structural and electrical properties and act on the magnetic properties by the overall decrease on the Mn4+ amount and by the creation of sample regions with different magnetic features. We can state that the basic magnetic and electrical behaviors of the Ca- and Na-doped lanthanum manganite compounds are driven from the Mn4+-Mn3+ ratio and all the peculiar behaviors are indeed caused by defects, concentration gradient and, more generally, by lattice disorder.

While the EPR signal arises from Co$^{4+}$ magnetic moments ordering at $T_c\simeq 26$ K, $^{59}$Co NMR signal originates from cobalt nuclei in metallic regions with no long range magnetic order and characterized by a generalized susceptibility typical of strongly correlated metallic systems. This phase separation in metallic and magnetic insulating regions is argued to occur below $T^*(x)$ ($220 - 270$ K). Above $T^*$ an anomalous decrease in the intensity of the EPR signal is observed and associated with the delocalization of the electrons which for $T<T^*$ were localized on Co$^{4+}$ $d_{z^2}$ orbitals. It is pointed out that the in-plane antiferromagnetic coupling $J\ll T^*$ cannot be the driving force for the phase separation.

Abstract:
In this paper we present the results of the synthesis and characterisation of nanocrystalline La1-xNaxMnO3+delta samples. Two synthetic routes were employed: polyacrylamide-based sol-gel and propellant synthesis. Pure, single phase materials were obtained with grain size around 35 nm for the sol-gel samples and around 55 nm for the propellant ones, which moreover present a more broaden grain siz…

In this paper we present the results of the synthesis and characterisation of nanocrystalline La1-xNaxMnO3+delta samples. Two synthetic routes were employed: polyacrylamide-based sol-gel and propellant synthesis. Pure, single phase materials were obtained with grain size around 35 nm for the sol-gel samples and around 55 nm for the propellant ones, which moreover present a more broaden grain size distribution. For both series a superparamagnetic behaviour was evidenced by means of magnetisation and EPR measurements with peculiar features ascribable to the different grain sizes and morphology. Preliminary magnetoresistivity measurements show enhanced low-field (< 1 T) magnetoresistance values which suggest an interesting applicative use of these manganites.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnetization measurements and electronic structure calculations in VOMoO4 are presented. It is found that VOMoO4 is a frustrated two-dimensional antiferromagnet on a square lattice with competing exchange interactions along the side J1 and the diagonal J2 of the square. From magnetization measurements J1+J2 is estimated around 155 K, in satisfactory agreement with the values derived from electronic structure calculations. Around 100 K a structural distortion, possibly driven by the frustration, is evidenced. This distortion induces significant modifications in the NMR and EPR spectra which can be accounted for by valence fluctuations. The analysis of the spectra suggests that the size of the domains where the lattice is distorted progressively grows as the temperature approaches the transition to the magnetic ground state at Tc=42 K.
