Luminescence thermometry has been extensively exploited in the last decades both from the fundamental and applied point of views. The application of photoluminescent nanoparticles on the microscopic level based on rare-earth doped (RED) nanostructures is yet a challenge. Distinct underlying physical mechanisms in the RED nanomaterials have been exploited, such as intensity ratio between radiative transitions associated with thermally coupled energy levels, energy peak and lifetime of an excited state variations with the temperature. The drawbacks of such systems are the relatively low thermal sensitivity (Sr), and the large temperature uncertainty. To overcome that, several research groups have been seeking new functionalized materials. The majority of the efforts have been directed towards increasing Sr with record around 10 %°C-1, which is, however, considered unsatisfactory. We propose the use of an automated machine learning tool to retrieve an ideal pipeline improving the response of photoluminescence thermometers. As a proof-of-concept, we used Nd3+-doped YAG nanoparticles, excited at 760 nm, and the photoluminescence spectra in the range from 860 nm to 960 nm as input parameters. In addition to the improvement in the accuracy (> 5.5x over traditional methods), the implementation is very simple, without the requirement of any deconvolution procedure or knowledge of any underlying physical mechanism. Our findings demonstrate that this approach is resilient to natural variances across various spectral acquisitions, which may otherwise lead to an inaccurate estimation of temperature, opening the door for real-time applications. Our open-source code is designed to be accessible to individuals without programming experience.

In the anti-Stokes excitation of trivalent rare-earth ions (RE3+), the excitation photons energy is smaller than that of a given absorption transition, and the energy mismatch can be compensated by phonons annihilation from the host lattice. Since the phonon occupation number increases with temperature, heating the system generally increases the efficiency of anti-Stokes excitation. Here, we exploited the intrinsic heating associated with light-to-heat conversion in the interaction of excitation laser light with metallic nanoparticles (Ag or Au) on the surface of submicrometric particles of NdxY1.00-xAl3(BO3)4 (x = 0.10, 0.20, and 1.00) in order to enhance the efficiency of the anti-Stokes excitation at 1064 nm. Several upconversion emissions are observed from 600 nm to 880 nm, the most intense being at 750 nm due to the Nd3+ transition {4F7/2, 4S3/2} - 4I9/2. Giant enhancements are demonstrated, when compared to undecorated NdxY1.00-xAl3(BO3)4 particles. The present results can be expanded to other luminescent materials as well as excitation wavelengths.

We investigate the role of the Nd3+ content on the PA characteristics in NdxY1.00-xAl3(BO3)4 particles with x ranging from 0.05 to 1.00. It is known that the replacement of Y3 by Nd3+ into the YAl3(BO3)4 crystalline structure can introduce strong modifications of the lattice properties as well as in the photoluminescence characteristics, such as luminescence concentration quenching and broadening of spectral lines. Despite that, we observe, for low x (<= 0.20) an energy-loo** preceding the PA-like that ensues for x >= 0.40. It is associated to the proximity among the Nd3+ ions, fundamental to the electric dipole-electric dipole interaction responsible for the Nd3+ energy transfer [4F3/2, 4I9/2] - [4I15/2, 4I15/2]. We discuss the present results focusing on emerging technologies with development of ultra-sensitive thermal sensors, and super-resolution imaging thanks to the giant nonlinearities in the input-output power dependences.

We compute analytically the radiative quantum corrections, up to next-to-leading loop order, to the universal critical exponents for both massless and massive O($N$) $λφ^{4}$ scalar squeezed field theories for probing the universality hypothesis. For that, we employ six distinct and independent methods. The outcomes for the universal squeezed critical exponents obtained through these methods are identical among them and reduce to the conventional ones where squeezing is absent. Although the squeezing mechanism modifies the internal properties of the field, the squeezed critical indices are not affected by the squeezing effect, thus implying the validity of the universality hypothesis, at least at the loop level considered. At the end, we present the corresponding physical interpretation for the results in terms of the geometric symmetry properties of the squeezed field.

We report efficient non-resonant ground state excitation at 1064 nm of trivalent neodymium (Nd$^{3+}$) ions in stoichiometric neodymium aluminum borate NdAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ nanoparticles, which are crystalline and, besides the large content of Nd$^{3+}$ ions, present excellent photoluminescence properties. Up-conversions (UCs) were observed and the energy pathways identified, as starting by multi-phonon assisted ground state absorption ($^4$I$_{9/2}$-$^4$F$_{3/2}$) and excited state absorption ($^4$I$_{11/2}$-$^4$F$_{3/2}$) with the population of the $^4$I$_{11/2}$ level by thermal coupling with the ground state. The excited state $^4$I$_{11/2}$ is also populated by relaxations of the Nd$^{3+}$ ions increasing the population of the $^4$F$_{3/2}$ level. Cross-relaxation among two Nd$^{3+}$ ions ($^4$F$_{3/2}$,$^4$I$_{9/2}$)-($^4$I$_{15/2}$,$^4$I$_{15/2}$) with subsequent phonon emission leads to two ions at the $^4$I$_{11/2}$ level every iteration triggering a photon avalanche mechanism which greatly enhances the efficiency of the UCs. Ladder thermal excitation $^4$F$_{3/2}$-[$^4$F$_{5/2}$,$^2$H$_{9/2}$]-[$^4$F$_{7/2}$,$^4$S$_{3/2}$]-$^4$F$_{9/2}$ was achieved, and the ground state relaxation from these levels provided emission at 880 nm, 810 nm, 750 nm, and 690 nm, respectively. Energy transfer UCs (Auger) between Nd$^{3+}$ ions at the $^4$F$_{3/2}$ level allowed the population of the [$^2$G$_{3/2}$,$^4$G$_{7/2}$] from which relaxations to the $^4$I$_{9/2}$, $^4$I$_{11/2}$, and $^4$I$_{13/2}$ states provided emissions around 536 nm, 600 nm, and 660 nm, respectively. Associated with the nonradiative relaxations, we observed the heating of the nanoparticles (22 °C to 240 °C) with subsequent thermal enhancement of the frequency UCs due to the redistribution of population among coupled energy levels of the Nd$^{3+}$ ions.

The orbital angular momentum conservation of light reveals different diffraction patterns univocally dependent on the topological charge of the incident light beam when passing through a triangular aperture. It is demonstrated that these patterns, which are accessed by observing the far field measurement of the diffracted light, can also be obtained using few photon sources. In order to explain the observed patterns, we introduce an analogy of this optical phenomenon with the study of diffraction for the characterization of the crystal structure of solids. We demonstrate that the finite pattern can be associated to the reciprocal lattice obtained from the direct lattice generated by the primitive vectors composing any two of the sides of the equilateral triangular slit responsible for the diffraction. Using the relation that exists between the direct and reciprocal lattices, we provide a conclusive explanation of why the diffraction pattern of the main maxima is finite. This can shed a new light on the investigation of crystallographic systems.

Lévy flights for light have been demonstrated in disordered systems with and without optical gain, and remained unobserved in ordered ones. In the present letter, we investigate, numerically and experimentally, Lévy flights for light in ordered systems due to an ordered (conventional) laser. The statistical analysis was performed on the intensity fluctuations of the output spectra upon repeated identical experimental realizations. We found out that the optical gain and the mirrors reflectivity are critical parameters governing the fluctuation statistics. We identified Lévy regimes for gain around the laser threshold, and Gaussian-Lévy-Gaussian crossovers were unveiling when increasing the gain from below to above the threshold. The experimental results were corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations, and the fluctuations were associated to a Langevin noise source that takes into account the randomness of the spontaneous emission, which seeds the laser emission and can cause large fluctuations of the output spectra from shot-to-shot under identical experimental realizations.

Direct holographic recording in undoped Bi$_{12}$TiO$_{20}$ crystal at 1064 nm is investigated aiming the characterization of diffraction efficiency under action of applied dc electric field ($E_0$). An enhancement of 12-fold in the diffraction efficiency was revealed when $E_0$ increased from 0.0 to 4.2 kV/cm. The theoretical dependence of the diffraction efficiency upon $E_0$ was investigated using the standard model for photorefractivity and the results showed a good experimental data fitting, allowing the computation of the effective trap concentration $(N_D$$)_{eff}$ $\approx$ $5.3\times 10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$ which is responsible by the recording mechanism into the BTO crystal sample. The type of charge carrier involved in the recording mechanism in the nearinfrared region is also discussed.

The recent reports of the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) phenomenon in photonic experiments [1-5] boosted the understanding of the role of disorder in multimode lasers, as well as helped to settle enlightening connections [6-13] with the statistical physics of complex systems. RSB manifests when identically-prepared system replicas reach distinct states, yielding different measures of observable quantities [14]. Here we demonstrate the RSB in the spontaneous mode-locking regime of a conventional multimode Nd:YAG laser in a closed cavity. The underlying mechanism is quite distinct from that of the RSB s**lass phase in cavityless random lasers with incoherently-oscillating modes. Here, a specific nonuniform distribution of the gain takes place in each pulse, and frustration is induced since the coherent oscillation of a given subset of longitudinal modes dominates and simultaneously inhibits the others. Nevertheless, when high losses are introduced only the replica-symmetric amplified stimulation emission is observed. We therefore suggest that the RSB transition can be used as an identifier of the threshold in standard multimode lasers, as recently proposed and demonstrated for random lasers [1,2].

The analogue of the paramagnetic to spin-glass phase transition in disordered magnetic systems, leading to the phenomenon of replica symmetry breaking, has been recently demonstrated in a two-dimensional random laser consisting of an organic-based amorphous solid-state thin film. We report here the first demonstration of replica symmetry breaking in a one-dimensional photonic system consisting of an erbium-doped random fiber laser operating in the continuous-wave regime based on a unique random fiber grating system, which plays the role of the random scatterers and operates in the Anderson localization regime. The clear transition from a photonic paramagnetic to a photonic spin glass phase, characterized by the probability distribution function of the Parisi overlap, was verified and characterized. In this unique system, the radiation field interacts only with the gain medium, and the fiber grating, which provides the disordered feedback mechanism, does not interfere with the pump.

Random lasers have been recently approached as a photonic platform for disordered complex systems, such as spin glasses. In this work, using a Nd$^{3+}$:YBO$_3$ random laser system operating in the nonresonant (diffusive) feedback regime, we measured the distinct statistics of intensity fluctuations and show the physical origin of the complex interplay between the Lévy regime and the replica-symmetry-breaking transition to the photonic spin-glass phase. A novel result is reported: the unsaturated spin-glass behavior for high excitation pulse energies, not observed for systems with coherent feedback. Our experimental findings are corroborated by the present theoretical analysis. The results herein presented universalize the recent observation consistent with replica symmetry breaking in random lasers with coherent feedback, and also advance on the characterization of the fluctuation statistics of the photonic spin-glass phase, supported by recent theoretical works on the nonlinear optics of complex photonic systems.
