It has recently been pointed out that one can construct invertible conformal transformations with a parity-violating conformal factor, which can be employed to generate a novel class of parity-violating ghost-free metric theories from general relativity. We obtain exact solutions for rotating black holes in such theories by performing the conformal transformation on the Kerr solution in general relativity, which we dub conformal Kerr solutions. We explore the geodesic motion of a test particle in the conformal Kerr spacetime. While null geodesics remain the same as those in the Kerr spacetime, timelike geodesics exhibit interesting differences due to an effective external force caused by the parity-violating conformal factor.

Extraction of multiple quasinormal modes from ringdown gravitational waves emitted from a binary black hole coalescence is a touchstone to test whether a remnant black hole is described by the Kerr spacetime in general relativity. However, it is not straightforward to check the consistency between the ringdown signal and the quasinormal mode frequencies predicted by the linear perturbation theory. While the longest-lived mode can be extracted in a stable manner, the higher overtones damp more quickly and hence the fitting of overtones tends to end up with the overfit. To improve the extraction of overtones, we propose an iterative procedure consisting of fitting and subtraction of the longest-lived mode of the ringdown waveform in the time domain. Through the analyses of the mock waveform and numerical relativity waveform, we clarify that the iterative procedure allows us to extract the overtones in a more stable manner.

We study odd-parity perturbations about static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with a linearly time-dependent scalar field in higher-order scalar-tensor theories. In particular, we consider stealth Schwarzschild and stealth Schwarzschild-de Sitter solutions, where the deviation from the general relativity case is controlled by a single parameter. We find that complex frequencies of quasinormal modes (QNMs) are given by a simple scaling of those in general relativity. We also show that there is a degeneracy between the parameter characterizing the modification from general relativity and the black hole mass. We then consider a physically sensible initial value problem by taking into account the fact that the effective metric for the odd-parity perturbations is in general different from the background metric. We confirm that damped oscillations appearing at late times are indeed dominated by the QNMs. Our analysis includes the case where the perturbations are superluminal, and we demonstrate in this case that the perturbations can escape from the region inside the horizon for the background metric.

In canonical single-field inflation, the production of primordial black holes (PBH) requires a transient violation of the slow-roll condition. The transient ultra slow-roll inflation is an example of such scenarios, and more generally, one can consider the transient constant-roll inflation. We investigate the squeezed bispectrum in the transient constant-roll inflation and find that Maldacena's consistency relation holds for a sufficiently long-wavelength mode, whereas it is violated for modes around the peak scale for the non-attractor case. We also demonstrate how the one-loop corrections are modified compared to the case of the transient ultra slow-roll inflation, focusing on representative one-loop terms originating from a time derivative of the second slow-roll parameter in the cubic action. We find that the perturbativity requirement on those terms does not rule out the production of PBH from the transient constant-roll inflation. Therefore, it is a simple counterexample of the recently claimed no-go theorem of PBH production from single-field inflation.

Matter coupling in modified gravity theories is a nontrivial issue when the gravitational Lagrangian possesses a degeneracy structure to avoid the problem of the Ostrogradsky ghost. Recently, this issue was addressed for bosonic matter fields in the generalized disformal Horndeski class, which is so far the most general class of ghost-free scalar-tensor theories obtained by performing a higher-derivative generalization of invertible disformal transformations on Horndeski theories. In this paper, we clarify the consistency of fermionic matter coupling in the generalized disformal Horndeski theories. We develop the transformation law for the tetrad associated with the generalized disformal transformation to see how it affects the fermionic matter coupling. We find that the consistency of the fermionic matter coupling requires an additional condition on top of the one required for the bosonic case. As a result, we identify a subclass of the generalized disformal Horndeski class which allows for consistent coupling of ordinary matter fields, including the standard model particles.

It predicts the existence of gravitational waves (GWs) that stretch and compress spacetime and were detected recently by state-of-the-art interferometer observations. Yet, for those who are not familiar with general relativity, it may be difficult to understand how the GWs actually stretch and compress spacetime. In this paper, after reviewing the fact that the effects of GWs can be understood as a force in Newtonian mechanics, we consider extreme and readily perceivable situations where large-amplitude GWs pass through the human body and the Earth, and demonstrate that GWs cause phenomena that commonly occur in daily life by back-of-the-envelope calculations. We also point out the existence of purely imaginary modes. Further, we develop a method to extract in/outgoing waves near the AdS boundary, which enables us to define the greybody factor for a wide range of parameter space complementary to previous works. We study the scattering of gravitational waves by a Schwarzschild black hole and its perturbed siblings to investigate influences of proposed spectral instability of quasinormal modes on the ringdown signal. Our results indicate that information of dominant ringdown signals, which are ascribed to the fundamental (i.e., least dam**) quasinormal mode of unperturbed Schwarzschild black holes, is imprinted in the phase shift defined from the transmission amplitude (1/A_{in} in our notation). This approximately parallels the fact that the resonance of quantum systems is imprinted in the phase shift of the S-matrix. The phase shift around the oscillation frequency of the fundamental mode is modified only perturbatively even if the quasinormal-mode spectrum is destabilized by a perturbative bump at a distant location, signifying the stability of the ringdown signal. At the same time, the phase shift at low frequencies is modulated substantially reflecting the late-time excitation of echo signals associated with the quasinormal-mode spectrum after destabilization.

We compute the graybody factor and evaporation rate of a rotating black hole in the presence of a hypothetical reflective surface slightly outside the outer horizon radius, assuming that it spontaneously emits thermal radiation due to quantum-gravitational effects such as firewalls or stretched horizons. As a result of a resonance caused by a cavity between the reflective surface and angular momentum barrier, the graybody factor is subject to a modulation in the frequency space. By taking into account this effect for multiangular modes of neutrinos, photons, and gravitons, we numerically compute the time development of the mass and angular momentum of the black hole, and show that the excited reflective surface shortens the lifetime of quantum black holes.

We propose a physically sensible formulation of initial value problem for black hole perturbations in higher-order scalar-tensor theories. As a first application, we study monopole perturbations around stealth Schwarzschild solutions in a shift- and reflection-symmetric subclass of degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. In particular, we investigate the time evolution of the monopole perturbations by solving a two-dimensional wave equation and analyze the Vishveshwara's classical scattering experiment, i.e., the time evolution of a Gaussian wave packet. As a result, we confirm that stealth Schwarzschild solutions in the DHOST theory are dynamically stable against the monopole perturbations with the wavelength comparable or shorter than the size of the black hole horizon. We also find that the damped oscillations at the late time do not show up unlike the ringdown phase in the standard case of general relativity. Moreover, we investigate the characteristic curves of the monopole perturbations as well as a static spherically symmetric solution with monopole hair.

A stealth de Sitter solution in scalar-tensor theories has an exact de Sitter background metric and a nontrivial scalar field profile. Recently, in the context of Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor (DHOST) theories it was shown that stealth de Sitter solutions suffer from either infinite strong coupling or gradient instability for scalar field perturbations. The sound speed squared is either vanishing or negative. In the first case, the strong coupling scale is zero and thus lower than the energy scale of any physical phenomena. From the viewpoint of effective field theory, this issue is naturally resolved by introducing a controlled detuning of the degeneracy condition dubbed scordatura, recovering a version of ghost condensation. In this paper we construct a viable dark energy model in the scordatura DHOST theory based on a stealth cosmological solution, in which the metric is the same as in the standard $Λ$CDM model and the scalar field profile is linearly time-dependent. We show that the scordatura mechanism resolves the strong coupling and gradient instability. Further, we find that the scordatura is also necessary to make the quasi-static limit well-defined, which implies that the subhorizon observables are inevitably affected by the scordatura. We derive the effective gravitational coupling and the correction to the friction term for the subhorizon evolution of the linear dark matter energy density contrast as well as the Weyl potential and the gravitational slip parameter. In the absence of the scordatura, the quasi-static approximation would break down at all scales around stealth cosmological solutions even if the issue of the infinite strong coupling is unjustly disregarded. Therefore previous estimations of the subhorizon evolution of matter density contrast in modified gravity in the literature need to be revisited by taking into account the scordatura effect.

Using the disformal solution-generating method, we construct new axisymmetric solutions in Degenerate Higher Order Scalar Tensor (DHOST) theories. The method consists in first considering a "seed" known solution in DHOST theories and then performing a disformal transformation of the metric to obtain a new solution. In vacuum, the two solutions are equivalent but they become physically inequivalent when one considers coupling to matter. In that way, we "disform" the stealth Kerr black hole solution and we obtain a first analytic rotating non-stealth solution in DHOST theories, while the associated scalar field is time-dependent with a constant kinetic density. The new solution is characterized by three parameters: the mass, the spin and the disformal parameter which encodes the deviation with respect to the Kerr geometry. We explore some geometrical properties of the novel disformed Kerr geometry which is no more Ricci flat, has the same singularity as the Kerr metric, admits an ergoregion, and is asymptotically flat. Moreover, the hidden symmetry of the Kerr solution is broken, providing an example of a non-circular geometry in a higher order theory of gravity. We also discuss geodesic motions and compute its (disformed) null directions which are interesting tools to understand the causal structure of the geometry. In addition, to illustrate again the potentiality of the disformal solution-generating method, we present another axisymmetric solution for DHOST theories obtained from a disformal transformation of the generalized Kerr solution of Einstein-Scalar gravity.

We extend the effective field theory of inflation to a general Lagrangian constructed from Arnowitt-Deser-Misner variables that encompasses the most general interactions with up to second derivatives of the scalar field whose background breaks temporal diffeomorphism invariance. Degeneracy conditions, corresponding to 8 distinct types -- only one of which corresponds to known degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor models -- provide necessary conditions for eliminating the Ostrogradsky ghost in a covariant theory at the level of the quadratic action in unitary gauge. Novel implications of the degenerate higher-order system for the Cauchy problem are illustrated with the phase space portrait of an explicit inflationary example: not all field configurations lead to physical solutions for the metric even for positive potentials; solutions are unique for a given configuration only up to a branch choice; solutions on one branch can apparently end at nonsingular points of the metric and their continuation on alternate branches lead to nonsingular bouncing solutions; unitary gauge perturbations can go unstable even when degenerate terms in the Lagrangian are infinitesimal. The attractor solution leads to an inflationary scenario where slow-roll parameters vary and running of the tilt can be large even with no explicit features in the potential far from the end of inflation, requiring the optimized slow-roll approach for predicting observables.

Ostrogradsky theorem states that Hamiltonian is unbounded when Euler-Lagrange equations are higher than second-order differential equations under the nondegeneracy assumption. Since higher-order nondegenerate Lagrangian can be always recast into an equivalent system with at most first-order derivatives by introducing auxiliary variables and constraints, it is conceivable that the link between ghost and higher derivatives may be reinterpreted as a link between ghost and constraints and/or auxiliary variables. We find that the latter point of view actually provides more general perspective than the former, by exploring the un/boundedness of the Hamiltonian for general theories containing auxiliary variables, for which Euler-Lagrange equations can be essentially second order or lower than that. For Lagrangians including auxiliary variables nonlinearly, we derive the degeneracy condition to evade the Ostrogradsky ghost that can apply even if auxiliary variables can be solved only locally. For theories with constraints with Lagrange multipliers, we establish criteria for inclusion of nonholonomic (velocity-dependent) constraints leading to the absence of local minimum of Hamiltonian. Our criteria include the Ostrogradsky theorem as a special case, and can detect not only ghost associated with higher-order derivatives, but also ghost coming from lower-order derivatives in system with constraints. We discuss how to evade such a ghost. We also provide various specific examples to highlight application and limitation of our general arguments.

We study the dynamics of a spectator Higgs field which stochastically evolves during inflation onto near-critical trajectories on the edge of a runaway instability. We show that its fluctuations do not produce primordial black holes (PBHs) in sufficient abundance to be the dark matter, nor do they produce significant second-order gravitational waves. First we show that the Higgs produces larger fluctuations on CMB scales than on PBH scales, itself a no-go for a viable PBH scenario. Then we track the superhorizon perturbations nonlinearly through reheating using the delta N formalism to show that they are not converted to large curvature fluctuations. Our conclusions hold regardless of any fine-tuning of the Higgs field for both the Standard Model Higgs and for Higgs potentials modified to prevent unbounded runaway.

In scalar-tensor theories we revisit the issue of strong coupling of perturbations around stealth solutions, i.e.\ backgrounds with the same forms of the metric as in General Relativity but with non-trivial configurations of the scalar field. The simplest among them is a stealth Minkowski (or de Sitter) solution with a constant, timelike derivative of the scalar field, i.e.\ ghost condensation. In the decoupling limit the effective field theory (EFT) describing perturbations around the stealth Minkowski (or de Sitter) solution shows the universal dispersion relation of the form $ω^2 = αk^4/M^2$, where $M$ is a mass scale characterizing the background scalar field and $α$ is a dimensionless constant. Provided that $α$ is positive and of order unity, a simple scaling argument shows that the EFT is weakly coupled all the way up to $M$. On the other hand, if the structure of the underlining theory forces the perturbations to follow second-order equations of motion then $α=0$ and the dispersion relation loses dependence on the spatial momentum. This not only explains the origin of the strong coupling problem that was recently pointed out in a class of degenerate theories but also provides a hint for a possible solution of the problem. We then argue that a controlled detuning of the degeneracy condition, which we call scordatura, renders the perturbations weakly coupled without changing the properties of the stealth solutions of degenerate theories at astrophysical scales.

The constant-roll inflation with small positive value of the constant-roll parameter $β\equiv \frac{\ddotφ}{H\dotφ}={\rm const.}$ has been known to produce a slightly red-tilted curvature power spectrum compatible with the current observational constraints. In this work, we shed light on the constant-roll inflation with negative $β$ and investigate how a stage of constant-roll inflation may realize the growth in the primordial curvature power spectrum necessary to produce a peaked spectrum of primordial black hole abundance. We first review the behavior of constant-roll models in the range of parameters $-\frac32<β<0$, which allows for a constant-roll attractor stage generating a blue-tilted curvature power spectrum without superhorizon growth. As a concrete realization, we consider a potential with two slow-roll stages, separated by the constant-roll stage, in a way that satisfies the current constraints on the power spectrum and the primordial black hole abundance. The model can produce primordial black holes as all dark matter, LIGO-Virgo events, or OGLE microlensing events. Due to the range of different scalar tilts allowed by the constant-roll potential, this construction is particularly robust and testable by future observations.

We generalize the notion of constant-roll inflation earlier introduced in General Relativity (GR) and $f(R)$ gravity to inflationary models in more general scalar-tensor gravity. A number of novel exact analytic solutions for a FLRW spatially flat cosmological background is found for this case. All forms of the scalar field potential and its coupling to gravity producing the exact de Sitter solution, while the scalar field is varying, are presented. In the particular cases of induced gravity and GR with a non-minimally coupled scalar field, all constant-roll inflationary solutions are found. In the former case they represent power-law inflation, while in the latter case the solution is novel and more complicated. Comparison of scalar perturbations generated during such inflation in induced gravity with observational data shows that the constant-roll parameter should be small, similar to constant-roll inflation in GR and $f(R)$ gravity. Then the solution reduces to the standard slow-roll one with small corrections.

We study static spherically symmetric black hole solutions with a linearly time-dependent scalar field and discuss their linear stability in the shift- and reflection-symmetric subclass of quadratic degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. We present the explicit forms of the reduced system of background field equations for a generic theory within this subclass. Using the reduced equations of motion, we show that in several cases the solution is forced to be of the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter form. We consider odd-parity perturbations around general static spherically symmetric black hole solutions, and derive the concise criteria for the black holes to be stable. Our analysis also covers the case with a static or constant profile of the scalar field.

Primordial black holes (PBHs) cannot be produced abundantly enough to be the dark matter in canonical single-field inflation under slow roll. This conclusion is robust to local non-Gaussian correlations between long- and short-wavelength curvature modes, which we show have no effect in slow roll on local primordial black hole abundances. For the prototypical model which evades this no go, ultra-slow roll (USR), these squeezed non-Gaussian correlations have at most an order unity effect on the variance of PBH-producing curvature fluctuations for models that would otherwise fail to form sufficient PBHs. Moreover, the transition out of USR, which is necessary for a successful model, suppresses even this small enhancement unless it causes a large increase in the inflaton kinetic energy in a fraction of an e-fold, which we call a large and fast transition. Along the way we apply the in-in formalism, the delta N formalism, and gauge transformations to compute non-Gaussianities and illuminate different aspects of the physical origin of these results. Local non-Gaussianity in the squeezed limit does not weaken the Gaussian conclusion that PBHs as dark matter in canonical single-field inflation require a complicated and fine-tuned potential shape with an epoch where slow roll is transiently violated.

We thus perform the linear stability analysis of the scalar field about general relativity solutions and highlight a crucial difference between a spherically symmetric profile and a planar symmetric profile. We clarify that the critical value for the instability is sensitive to the morphology and that the spontaneous scalarization occurs much more easily with the planar symmetric shape than with the spherically symmetric shape.

We find stealth Schwarzschild solutions with a nontrivial profile of the scalar field regular on the horizon in the Einstein gravity coupled to the scalar field with the k-essence and/or generalized cubic galileon terms, which is a subclass of the Horndeski theory breaking the shift symmetry, where the propagation speed of gravitational waves coincides with the speed of light. After deriving sufficient conditions for the shift symmetry breaking theory to allow a general Ricci-flat metric solution with a nontrivial scalar field profile, we focus on the stealth Schwarzschild solution with the scalar field with or without time dependence. For the profile $φ=φ_0(r)$, we explicitly obtain two types of stealth Schwarzschild solutions, one of which is regular on the event horizon. The linear perturbation analysis clarifies that the kinetic term of the scalar mode identically vanishes, indicating that the scalar mode is strongly coupled. The absence of the kinetic term of the scalar mode in the quadratic action would inevitably arise for the stealth Schwarzschild solutions in the theory with a general scalar field profile depending only on the spatial coordinates. On the other hand, for the time-dependent scalar field profile, we clarify that there does not exist a stealth Schwarzschild solution in the shift symmetry breaking theories.

We construct no-ghost theories of analytic mechanics involving arbitrary higher-order derivatives in Lagrangian. It has been known that for theories involving at most second-order time derivatives in the Lagrangian, eliminating linear dependence of canonical momenta in the Hamiltonian is necessary and sufficient condition to eliminate Ostrogradsky ghost. In the previous work we showed for the specific quadratic model involving third-order derivatives that the condition is necessary but not sufficient, and linear dependence of canonical coordinates corresponding to higher time-derivatives also need to be removed appropriately. In this paper, we generalize the previous analysis and establish how to eliminate all the ghost degrees of freedom for general theories involving arbitrary higher-order derivatives in the Lagrangian. We clarify a set of degeneracy conditions to eliminate all the ghost degrees of freedom, under which we also show that the Euler-Lagrange equations are reducible to a second-order system.

Recent gravitational wave observations of binary black hole mergers and a binary neutron star merger by LIGO and Virgo Collaborations associated with its optical counterpart constrain deviation from General Relativity (GR) both on strong-field regime and cosmological scales with high accuracy, and further strong constraints are expected by near-future observations. Thus, it is important to identify theories of modified gravity that intrinsically possess the same solutions as in GR among a huge number of theories. We clarify the three conditions for theories of modified gravity to allow GR solutions, i.e., solutions with the metric satisfying the Einstein equations in GR and the constant profile of the scalar fields. Our analysis is quite general, as it applies a wide class of single-/multi-field scalar-tensor theories of modified gravity in the presence of matter component, and any spacetime geometry including cosmological background as well as spacetime around black hole and neutron star, for the latter of which these conditions provide a necessary condition for no-hair theorem. The three conditions will be useful for further constraints on modified gravity theories as they classify general theories of modified gravity into three classes, each of which possesses i) unique GR solutions (i.e., no-hair cases), ii) only hairy solutions (except the cases that GR solutions are realized by cancellation between singular coupling functions in the Euler-Lagrange equations), and iii) both GR and hairy solutions, for the last of which one of the two solutions may be selected dynamically.

The simple $m^2φ^2$ potential as an inflationary model is coming under increasing tension with limits on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and measurements of the scalar spectral index $n_s$. Cubic Galileon interactions in the context of the Horndeski action can potentially reconcile the observables. However, we show that this cannot be achieved with only a constant Galileon mass scale because the interactions turn off too slowly, leading also to gradient instabilities after inflation ends. Allowing for a more rapid transition can reconcile the observables but moderately breaks the slow-roll approximation leading to a relatively large and negative running of the tilt $α_s$ that can be of order $n_s-1$. We show that the observables on CMB and large scale structure scales can be predicted accurately using the optimized slow-roll approach instead of the traditional slow-roll expansion. Upper limits on $|α_s|$ place a lower bound of $r\gtrsim 0.005$ and conversely a given $r$ places a lower bound on $|α_s|$, both of which are potentially observable with next generation CMB and large scale structure surveys.

For primordial black holes (PBH) to be the dark matter in single-field inflation, the slow-roll approximation must be violated by at least ${\cal O}(1)$ in order to enhance the curvature power spectrum within the required number of efolds between CMB scales and PBH mass scales. Power spectrum predictions which rely on the inflaton remaining on the slow-roll attractor can fail dramatically leading to qualitatively incorrect conclusions in models like an inflection potential and misestimate the mass scale in a running mass model. We show that an optimized temporal evaluation of the Hubble slow-roll parameters to second order remains a good description for a wide range of PBH formation models where up to a $10^7$ amplification of power occurs in $10$ efolds or more.

We provide a compact and unified treatment of power spectrum observables for the effective field theory (EFT) of inflation with the complete set of operators that lead to second-order equations of motion in metric perturbations in both space and time derivatives, including Horndeski and GLPV theories. We relate the EFT operators in ADM form to the four additional free functions of time in the scalar and tensor equations. Using the generalized slow roll formalism, we show that each power spectrum can be described by an integral over a single source that is a function of its respective sound horizon. With this correspondence, existing model independent constraints on the source function can be simply reinterpreted in the more general inflationary context. By expanding these sources around an optimized freeze-out epoch, we also provide characterizations of these spectra in terms of five slow-roll hierarchies whose leading order forms are compact and accurate as long as EFT coefficients vary only on timescales greater than an efold. We also clarify the relationship between the unitary gauge observables employed in the EFT and the comoving gauge observables of the post-inflationary universe.

We address this issue from the Lagrangian point of view, and prove the following theorem on the relation between gauge fixing and Euler-Lagrange equations: In any gauge theory, if a gauge fixing is complete, i.e., the gauge functions are determined uniquely by the gauge conditions, the Euler-Lagrange equations derived from the gauge-fixed action are equivalent to those derived from the original action supplemented with the gauge conditions. Otherwise, it is not appropriate to impose the gauge conditions before deriving Euler-Lagrange equations as it may in general lead to inconsistent results. The criterion to check whether a gauge fixing is complete or not is further investigated. We also provide applications of the theorem to scalar-tensor theories and make comments on recent relevant papers on theories of modified gravity, in which there are confusions on gauge fixing and counting physical degrees of freedom.

For $n=1$, assuming that the $q^i$'s form a nondegenerate subsystem, we confirm that the degeneracy of the kinetic matrix eliminates the Ostrogradsky instability. The degeneracy implies, in the Hamiltonian formulation of the theory, the existence of a primary constraint, which generates a secondary constraint, thus eliminating the Ostrogradsky ghost. For $n>1$, we show that, in addition to the degeneracy of the kinetic matrix, one needs to impose extra conditions to ensure the presence of a sufficient number of secondary constraints that can eliminate all the Ostrogradsky ghosts. When these conditions that ensure the disappearance of the Ostrogradsky instability are satisfied, we show that the Euler-Lagrange equations, which involve a priori higher order derivatives, can be reduced to a second order system.

Self-accelerating backgrounds in massive gravity provide an arena to explore the Cauchy problem for derivatively coupled fields that obey complex constraints which reduce the phase space degrees of freedom. We present here an algorithm based on the Kronecker form of a matrix pencil that finds all hidden constraints, for example those associated with derivatives of the equations of motion, and characteristic curves for any 1+1 dimensional system of linear partial differential equations. With the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli decomposition of metric perturbations into angular momentum and parity states, this technique applies to fully 3+1 dimensional perturbations of massive gravity around any isotropic self-accelerating background. Five spin modes of the massive graviton propagate once the constraints are imposed: two spin-2 modes with luminal characteristics present in the massless theory as well as two spin-1 modes and one spin-0 mode. Although the new modes all possess the same - typically spacelike - characteristic curves, the spin-1 modes are parabolic while the spin-0 modes are hyperbolic. The joint system, which remains coupled by non-derivative terms, cannot be solved as a simple Cauchy problem from a single non-characteristic surface. We also illustrate the generality of the algorithm with other cases where derivative constraints reduce the number of propagating degrees of freedom or order of the equations.

We develop methods to calculate the curvature power spectrum in models where features in the inflaton potential nonlinearly excite modes and generate high frequency features in the spectrum. The first nontrivial effect of excitations generating further excitations arises at third order in deviations from slow roll. If these further excitations are contemporaneous, the series can be resummed, showing the exponential sensitivity of the curvature spectrum to potential features. More generally, this exponential approximation provides a power spectrum template which nonlinearly obeys relations between excitation coefficients and whose parameters may be appropriately adjusted. For a large sharp step in the potential, it greatly improves the analytic power spectrum template and its dependence on potential parameters. For axionic oscillations in the potential, it corrects the map** between the potential and the amplitude, phase and zero point of the curvature oscillations, which might otherwise cause erroneous inferences in for example the tensor-scalar ratio, formally even when that amplitude is $10^3$ times larger than the slow roll power spectrum. It also estimates when terms that produce double frequency oscillations that are usually omitted when analyzing data should be included. These techniques should allow future studies of high frequency features in the CMB and large scale structure to extend to higher amplitude and/or higher precision.

Self-accelerating solutions in massive gravity provide explicit, calculable examples that exhibit the general interplay between superluminality, the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, and strong coupling. For three particular classes of vacuum solutions, one of which is new to this work, we construct the conformal diagram for the characteristic surfaces on which isotropic stress-energy perturbations propagate. With one exception, all solutions necessarily possess spacelike characteristics, indicating perturbative superluminality. Foliating the spacetime with these surfaces gives a pathological frame where kinetic terms of the perturbations vanish, confusing the Hamiltonian counting of degrees of freedom. This frame dependence distinguishes the vanishing of kinetic terms from strong coupling of perturbations or an ill-posed Cauchy problem. We give examples where spacelike characteristics do and do not originate from a point where perturbation theory breaks down and where spacelike surfaces do or do not intersect all characteristics in the past light cone of a given observer. The global structure of spacetime also reveals issues that are unique to theories with two metrics: in all three classes of solutions, the Minkowski fiducial space fails to cover the entire de Sitter spacetime allowing worldlines of observers to end in finite proper time at determinant singularities. Characteristics run tangent to these surfaces requiring {\it ad hoc} rules to establish continuity across singularities.

We show that under a general disformal transformation the linear comoving curvature perturbation is not identically invariant, but is invariant on superhorizon scales for any theory that is disformally related to Horndeski's theory. The difference between disformally related curvature perturbations is found to be given in terms of the comoving density perturbation associated with a single canonical scalar field. In General Relativity it is well-known that this quantity vanishes on superhorizon scales through the Poisson equation that is obtained on combining the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints, and we confirm that a similar result holds for any theory that is disformally related to Horndeski's scalar-tensor theory so long as the invertibility condition for the disformal transformation is satisfied. We also consider the curvature perturbation at full nonlinear order in the unitary gauge, and find that it is invariant under a general disformal transformation if we assume that an attractor regime has been reached. Finally, we also discuss the counting of degrees of freedom in theories disformally related to Horndeski's.

Running from Features: Optimized Evaluation of Inflationary Power Spectra

In models like axion monodromy, temporal features during inflation which are not associated with its ending can produce scalar, and to a lesser extent, tensor power spectra where deviations from scale-free power law spectra can be as large as the deviations from scale invariance itself. Here the standard slow-roll approach breaks down since its parameters evolve on an efolding scale $ΔN$ much smaller than the efolds to the end of inflation. Using the generalized slow-roll approach, we show that the expansion of observables in a hierarchy of potential or Hubble evolution parameters comes from a Taylor expansion of the features around an evaluation point that can be optimized. Optimization of the leading-order expression provides a sufficiently accurate approximation for current data as long as the power spectrum can be described over the well-observed few efolds by the local tilt and running. Standard second-order approaches, often used in the literature, ironically are worse than leading-order approaches due to inconsistent evaluation of observables. We develop a new optimized next-order approach which predicts observables to $10^{-3}$ even for $ΔN\sim 1$ where all parameters in the infinite hierarchy are of comparable magnitude. For models with $ΔN \ll 1$, the generalized slow-roll approach provides integral expressions that are accurate to second order in the deviation from scale invariance. Their evaluation in the monodromy model provides highly accurate explicit relations between the running oscillation amplitude, frequency and phase in the curvature spectrum and parameters of the potential.

We consider an inflationary scenario where the rate of inflaton roll defined by $\ddotφ/H\dot φ$ remains constant. The rate of roll is small for slow-roll inflation, while a generic rate of roll leads to the interesting case of `constant-roll' inflation. We find a general exact solution for the inflaton potential required for such inflaton behaviour. In this model, due to non-slow evolution of background, the would-be decaying mode of linear scalar (curvature) perturbations may not be neglected. It can even grow for some values of the model parameter, while the other mode always remains constant. However, this always occurs for unstable solutions which are not attractors for the given potential. The most interesting particular cases of constant-roll inflation remaining viable with the most recent observational data are quadratic hilltop inflation (with cutoff) and natural inflation (with an additional negative cosmological constant). In these cases even-order slow-roll parameters approach non-negligible constants while the odd ones are asymptotically vanishing in the quasi-de Sitter regime.
