In this paper the vacuum energy density and generation of topological mass are investigated for a system of a real and complex scalar fields interacting with each other. In addition to that, it is also included the quartic self-interaction for each one of the fields. The condition imposed on the real field is the periodic condition, while the complex field obey a quasi-periodic condition. The system is placed in a scenario where the CPT-even aether-type Lorentz symmetry violation takes place. We allow that the Lorentz violation affects the fields with different intensities. The vacuum energy density, its loop correction, and the topological mass are evaluated analytically. It is also discussed the possibility of different vacuum states and their corresponding stability requirements, which depends on the conditions imposed on the fields, the interaction coupling constants and also the Lorentz violation parameters. The formalism used here to perform this investigation is the effective potential one, which is written as a loop expansion via path integral in quantum field theory.

This work investigates the thermal Casimir effect associated with a massive spinor field defined on a four-dimensional flat space with a circularly compactified spatial dimension whose periodicity is oriented along a vector in $xy$-plane. We employ the generalized zeta function method to establish a finite definition for the vacuum free energy density. This definition conveniently separates into the zero-temperature Casimir energy density and additional terms accounting for temperature corrections. The structure of existing divergences is analyzed from the asymptotic behavior of the spinor heat kernel function and removed in the renormalization by subtracting scheme. The only non-null heat coefficient is the one associated with the Euclidean divergence. We also address the need for a finite renormalization to treat the ambiguity in the zeta function regularization prescription \text{associated} with this Euclidean heat kernel coefficient and ensure that the renormalization procedure is unique. The high- and low-temperature asymptotic limits are also explored. In particular, we explicitly show that free energy density lacks a classical limit at high temperatures, and the entropy density agrees with the Nernst heat theorem at low temperatures.

In this study, we consider the four-dimensional Maxwell electrodynamics extended with CPT-even Myers-Pospelov Lorentz-violating dimension-six operators to investigate the associated two-dimensional properties in the context of quantum vacuum fluctuation effects, namely, the Casimir effect. Upon projecting out the 4D theory down to a 2D theory we obtain analogs of these operators leading to a modified dispersion relation in a Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) scalar model equivalent to the electromagnetic theory. By making use of the modified dispersion relation, we derive exact analytic expressions for the Casimir energy and force induced by imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions on the scalar field. In the regime where the LIV parameter becomes very small, we recover known results for the Casimir energy and force plus correction terms due to the LIV.

In this work we consider lightcone fluctuation effects in a five-dimensional spacetime arising as a consequence of the compactification of the extra dimension via a quasiperiodic condition, characterized by a phase angle $2πα$. By considering light propagating in a non-compactified direction we are able to compute both the renormalized graviton two-point function and the flight time of a photon caused by the fluctuations. We show that the resulting expressions depend on the quasiperiodic parameter, the compactification length and also on the distance traveled by the photon. Based on the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) sensitivity built on the James Webb Space Telescope, we discuss the possibility of making estimations on the size of the extra dimension if one assumes that the mean deviation on the flight time of photons can be observed through the NIRSpec. We also analyze the differences between the estimations in the periodic $α=0$, antiperiodic $α=1/2$ and other condition cases for $α$.

In this study, we explore the impact of an additional dimension, as proposed in Kaluza-Klein's theory, on the Casimir effect within the context of Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which is represented by the ``aether field''. We demonstrate that the Casimir energy is directly influenced by the presence of the fifth dimension, as well as by the aether parameter. Consequently, the force between the plates is also subject to variations of these parameters. Furthermore, we examine constraints on both the size of the extra dimension and the aether field parameter based on experimental data. The LIV parameter can provide insights into addressing the size-related challenges in Kaluza-Klein's theory and offers a mean to establish an upper limit on the size of the extra dimension. This helps to rationalize the difficulties associated with its detection in current experiments.

In this work we make use of the generalized zeta function technique to investigate the vacuum energy, temperature corrections and heat kernel coefficients associated with a scalar field under a quasiperiodic condition in a $(D+1)$-dimensional conical spacetime. In this scenario we find that the renormalized vacuum energy, as well as the temperature corrections, are both zero. The nonzero heat kernel coefficients are the ones related to the usual Euclidean divergence, and also to the nontrivial aspects of the quaisperiodically identified conical spacetime topology. An interesting result that arises in this configuration is that for some values of the quasiperiodic parameter, the heat kernel coefficient associated with the nontrivial topology vanishes. In addition, we also consider the scalar field in a $(D+1)$-dimensional spacetime formed by the combination of a conical and screw dislocation topological defects. In this case, we obtain a nonzero renormalized vacuum energy density and its corresponding temperature corrections. Again, the nonzero heat kernel coefficients found are the ones related to the Euclidean and nontrivial topology divergences. For $D=3$ we explicitly show, in the massless scalar field case, the limits of low and high temperatures for the free energy. In the latter, we show that the free energy presents a classical contribution.

The Brownian motion of a point particle induced by quantum vacuum fluctuations of a massless real scalar field in Einstein's universe is studied. By assuming the small displacement condition, the dispersion in the momentum and position of a point particle coupled to the massless scalar field are obtained. As a consequence of the homogeneity and isotropy properties of the Einstein's Universe, we find that all components of these physical observables are identical. We also examine divergent behaviors associated to the physical momentum and position dispersions, which we attribute to the $R^1\times S^3$ compact topology of the spacetime. Finally, based on the small displacement condition assumed, we analyze the limit of validity of our investigation.

In this paper we investigate the bosonic Casimir effect in a Lorentz-violating symmetry scenario. The theoretical model adopted consists of a real massive scalar quantum field confined in a region between two large parallel plates, having its dynamics governed by a modified Klein-Gordon equation that presents a Lorentz symmetry breaking term. In this context we admit that the quantum field obeys specific boundary conditions on the plates. The Lorentz-violating symmetry is implemented by the presence of an arbitrary constant space-like vector in a CPT-even aether-like approach, considering a direct coupling between this vector with the derivative of the field in higher order. The modification on the Klein-Gordon equation produces important corrections on the Casimir energy and pressure. Thus, we show that these corrections strongly depend on the order of the higher derivative term and the specific direction of the constant vector, as well as the boundary conditions considered.

In this paper the Casimir energy density, loop corrections, and generation of topological mass are investigated for a system consisting of two interacting real and complex scalar fields. The interaction considered is the quartic interaction in the form of a product of the modulus square of the complex field and the square of the real field. In addition, it is also considered the self-interaction associated with each field. In this theory, the scalar field is constrained to always obey periodic condition while the complex field obeys in one case a quasiperiodic condition and in other case mixed boundary conditions. The Casimir energy density, loop corrections, and topological mass are evaluated analytically for the massive and massless scalar fields considered. An analysis of possible different stable vacuum states and the corresponding stability condition is also provided. In order to better understand our investigation, some graphs are also presented. The formalism we use here to perform such investigation is the effective potential, which is written as loop expansions via path integral in quantum field theory.

Useful expressions for the Wightman function have been obtained, which allow us to calculate analytical expressions for the velocity dispersion in all condition cases considered. We also obtain expressions for the velocity dispersion in the short and late time regimes. Finally, we exhibit some graphs in order to show the behavior of the velocity dispersions, discussing important divergencies that are present in our results.

In the present paper we investigate thermal fluctuation corrections to the vacuum energy at zero temperature of a conformally coupled massless scalar field whose modes propagate in the Einstein universe with a spherical boundary, characterized by both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Thus, we generalize the results found in literature in this scenario, which has considered only the vacuum energy at zero temperature. To do this, we use the generalized zeta function method plus Abel-Plana formula and calculate the renormalized Casimir free energy as well as other thermodynamics quantities, namely, internal energy and entropy. For each one of them we also investigate the limits of high and low temperatures. At high temperatures we found that the renormalized Casimir free energy presents classical contributions, along with a logarithmic term. Also in this limit, the internal energy presents a classical contribution and the entropy a logarithmic term in addition to a classical contribution as well. Conversely, at low temperatures, it is shown that both the renormalized Casimir free energy and internal energy are dominated by the vacuum energy at zero temperature. It is also shown that the entropy obeys the third law of thermodynamics.

In this paper we study the quantum brownian motion of a scalar point particle in the analog Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetime in the presence of a disclination, in a condensed matter system. The analog spacetime is obtained as an effective description of a Bose-Einstein condensate in terms of quantum excitations of sound waves, named phonons. The dynamics of the phonons is described by a massless real scalar field whose modes are also subjected to a quasi-periodic condition. In this sense, we find exact solutions for the real scalar field in this scenario and calculate the two-point function which makes possible to analyze the mean squared velocity dispersion of the particle in all directions. We, thus, analyze some interesting particular cases and show some graphs where it is possible to see the consistency of our results.

In this paper, we analyze the fermionic condensate (FC) and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor associated with an isospin-$1/2$ charged massive fermionic field induced by the presence of a $SU(2)$ vortex, taking into account the effect of the conical geometry produced by this object. We consider the vortex as an idealized topological defect, i.e., very thin, straight and carrying a magnetic flux running along its core. Besides the direct coupling of the fermionic field with the iso-vector gauge field, we also admit the coupling with the scalar sector of the non-Abelian vortex system, expressed as a vector in the three-dimensional isospace. Due to this interaction, the FC is expressed as the sum of two contributions associated with the two different effective masses for the $\pm 1/2$ fermionic components of the isospin operator, $τ^3/2$. The VEV of the energy-tensor also presents a similar structure. The vacuum energy density is equal to the radial and axial stresses. As to the azimuthal one, it is expressed in terms of the radial derivative of energy-density. Regarding to the magnetic flux, both, the FC and the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, can be positive or negative. Another interesting consequence of the interaction with the bosonic sector, the FC and VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, present different intensity for different values of the ratio between the scalar coupling constant and the mass of the fermionic field. This is a new feature that the system presents.

In particular, for the massless scalar field case, we also calculate the thermodynamics quantities internal energy density and entropy density, with their corresponding high- and low-temperature limits. We show that the temperature correction term in the free energy density must suffer a finite renormalization, by subtracting the scalar thermal blackbody radiation contribution, in order to provide the correct classical limit at high temperatures. We check that, at low temperature, the entropy density vanishes as the temperature goes to zero, in accordance with the third law of thermodynamics. We also point out that, at low temperatures, the dominant term in the free energy and internal energy densities is the vacuum energy density at zero temperature. Finally, we also show that the pressure obeys an equation of state.

In addition, we also assume that the coordinate along the string's axis is compactified to a circle and presents an extra magnetic flux running along its center. This compactification is implemented by imposing a quasiperiodic condition on the field with an arbitrary phase $β$. The calculation of the VEV of the EMT and field squared, are developed by using the positive-energy Wightman function. The latter is constructed by the mode sum of the complete set of normalized bosonic wave-functions. Due to the compactification, two distinct contributions take place. The first one corresponds to the VEV in a cosmic string spacetime without compactification considering the magnetic interaction. So, this term presents a contribution due to the non-trivial topology of the conical space, and an additional contribution due to the interaction between the scalar field with the magnetic flux. The latter is a periodic function of the magnetic flux with period equal to the quantum flux, $Φ_0=2π/e$, and corresponds to a Aharanov-Bhom type contribution. The second contribution is induced by the compactification itself and depends on the magnetic flux along the string's core. It is also an even function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the string axis. Some asymptotic expressions for the VEVs of the energy-momentum tensor and field squared are provided for specific limiting cases of the physical parameter of the model.

The calculation of the VEVs of the field squared and the energy-moment tensor, are developed by using positive-energy Wightman function. The latter is construct by the mode sum over the complete set of normalized bosonic wavefunctions. Due to the compactification, the Wightman function is presented as the sum of two distinct contributions. The first one corresponding to the idealized cosmic string, and the second is induced by the compactification. The latter goes to zero for an infinite length of the compactification. As a consequence of the general structure of the Wightman function, both VEVs present also this decomposition. Moreover, due to the Aharanov-Bohm type of interaction between the field with the magnetic fluxes, the VEVs depend on the fractional part of the ration between the total flux and the quantum one.

In this paper we investigate the quantum Brownian motion of a massive scalar point particle induced by the FRW spacetime in the presence of a linear topological defect named cosmic string. In addition, we also consider a flat boundary orthogonal to the defect to analyse its effect on the particle's motion. For both cases we found exact expressions for the renormalized mean square deviation of the particle velocity, the quantity that measures the induced Brownian motion, and obtain asymptotic expressions when the point particle is near and far away from the cosmic string and the boundary. Furthermore, in both cases, there appears divergencies in the mean square deviation of the particle velocity coming from a time interval that correspond to a round trip of the massive point particle between its position and the cosmic string/flat boundary. The number of divergencies depends upon the radial position of the particle and the parameter associated with the cosmic string in the case without boundary, and upon this parameter and the radial and $z$ positions of the particle in the case with boundary.

In this paper we analyze the energy levels of a charged scalar particle placed in the static cosmic string spacetime, under the action of a uniform magnetic field parallel to the string, in the context of the semi-classical approach of the rainbow gravity. Firstly, we focus on the non-relativistic regime by solving the corresponding Schrödinger equation, following by a complete relativistic treatment of the problem in which we considered the Klein-Gordon equation. In both cases we find exact expressions for the Landau levels in terms of the rainbow functions, used to characterize a rainbow gravity model. In order to achieve the results of this paper we considered three different rainbow gravity models mostly used in the literature and compare the resulting modifications in the Landau levels with the standard case, namely without rainbow gravity.

In order to develop this analysis we calculate the complete set of normalized bosonic wave-functions obeying a quasiperiodicity condition, with arbitrary phase $β$, along the compactified extra dimension. In this context, only azimuthal and axial currents densities take place. As to the azimuthal current, two contributions appear.
The first one corresponds to the standard azimuthal current in high-dimensional AdS spacetime with a cosmic string without compactification while the second contribution is a new one, induced by the compactification itself. The latter is an even function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the compactified axis and is an odd function of the magnetic flux along its core with period equal to quantum flux, $Φ_0=2π/e$. On the other hand, the nonzero axial current density is an even function of the magnetic flux along the core of the string and an odd function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the compactified axis. We also find that the axial current density vanishes for untwisted and twisted bosonic fields in the absence of the magnetic flux enclosed by the compactified axis. Some asymptotic expressions for the current density are provided for specific limiting cases of the physical parameter of the model.

In this paper we study the effects of quantum scalar field vacuum fluctuations on scalar test particles in an analog model for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spatially flat geometry. In this scenario, the cases with one and two perfectly reflecting plane boundaries are considered as well the case without boundary. We find that the particles can undergo Brownian motion with a nonzero mean squared velocity induced by the quantum vacuum fluctuations due to the time dependent background and the presence of the boundaries. Typical singularities which appears due to the presence of the boundaries in flat spacetime can be naturally regularized for an asymptotically bounded expanding scale function. Thus, shifts in the velocity could be, at least in principle, detectable experimentally. The possibility to implement this observation in an analog cosmological model by the use of a Bose-Einstein condensate is also discussed.

In this paper we consider light-cone fluctuations arising as a consequence of the nontrivial topology of the locally flat cosmic string spacetime. By setting the light-cone along the z-direction we are able to develop a full analysis to calculate the renormalized graviton two-point function, as well as the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function and the time delay (or advance) in the propagation of a light-pulse. We found that all these expressions depend upon the parameter characterizing the conical topology of the cosmic string spacetime and vanish in the absence of it. We also point out that at large distances from the cosmic string the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function is extremely small while in the opposite limit it logarithmically increases, improving the signal and thus, making possible the detection of such quantity.

We consider constraints on cosmic strings from their emission of Higgs particles, in the case that the strings have a Higgs condensate with amplitude of order the string mass scale, assuming that a fraction of the energy of condensate can be turned into radiation near cusps. The injection of energy by the decaying Higgs particles affects the light element abundances predicted by standard Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), and also contributes to the Diffuse Gamma-Ray Background (DGRB) in the universe today. We examine the two main string scenarios (Nambu-Goto and field theory), and find that the primordial Helium abundance strongly constrains the string tension and the efficiency of the emission process in the NG scenario, while the strongest BBN constraint in the FT scenario comes from the Deuterium abundance. The Fermi-LAT measurement of the DGRB constrains the field theory scenario even more strongly than previously estimated from EGRET data, requiring that the product of the string tension μ and Newton's constant G is bounded by Gμ < 2.7x10^{-11}β_{ft}^{-2}, where β_{ft}^2 is the fraction of the strings' energy going into Higgs particles.

We calculate the renormalized vacuum energy density for a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates formed by ideal uncharged conductors, placed very close to the surface of a rotating spherical gravitational source with mass $M$, radius $R$ and momentum angular $J$, at the equatorial region. We consider that the source rotates slowly and that the gravitational field is weak. Corrections to the Casimir energy density induced by the gravitational field generated by this source are calculated up to $M/R^2$ order. The obtained results show us that there is an important modification in the Casimir energy only in this order of approximation, which depends on the surface gravity as well as on the rotation of the source. Thermal corrections to the Casimir energy found also are calculated in all these orders.

The general case of the anisotropic polarizability tensor for the microparticle is considered. The corresponding force is a function of the wall-microparticle and cosmic string-microparticle distances. Depending on the orientation of the polarizability tensor principal axes the force can be either attractive or repulsive. The asymptotic behavior of the Casimir-Polder potential is investigated at large and small separations compared to the wavelength of the dominant atomic transitions. We calculate the total internal energy, total energy density and pressure, and the free energy for the neutrino and electromagnetic fields in Einstein and closed Friedmann cosmological models. The Casimir contributions to all these quantities are separated. The asymptotic expressions for both the total internal energy and free energy, and for the Casimir contributions to them are found in the limiting cases of low and high temperatures. It is shown that the neutrino field does not possess a classical limit at high temperature. As for the electromagnetic field, we demonstrate that the total internal energy has the classical contribution and the Casimir internal energy goes to the classical limit at high temperature. The respective Casimir free energy contains both linear and logarithmic terms with respect to the temperature. The total and Casimir entropies for the neutrino and electromagnetic fields at low temperature are also calculated and shown to be in agreement with the Nernst heat theorem.
