The critical current $I_c$ of single crystals of the iron pnictide superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, has been studied through measurements of magnetic hysteresis cycles. We show that the introduction of surface irregularities in the $μ$m scale significantly increase $I_c$, primarily near the irreversibility magnetic field $H_{irr}$, where the surface currents are the main contribution to $I_c$. Such an increase is consistent with a theoretical estimate for the maximum non-dissipative current that a rough surface can sustain, based on Mathieu-Simon continuum theory for the vortex state.

The confrontation between percolation processes and superconducting fluctuations to account for the observed enhanced in-plane electrical conductivity above but near $T_c$ in cuprates is revisited. The cuprates studied here, La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, and Tl$_2$Ba$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10}$, have a different number of superconducting CuO$_2$ layers per unit-cell length and different Josephson coupling between them, and are optimally-doped to minimize $T_c$-inhomogeneities. The excellent chemical and structural quality of these samples also contribute to minimize the effect of extrinsic $T_c$-inhomogeneities, a crucial aspect when analyzing the possible presence of intrinsic percolative processes. Our analyses also cover the so-called high reduced-temperature region, up to the resistivity rounding onset $\varepsilon_{onset}$. By using the simplest form of the effective-medium theory, we show that possible emergent percolation processes alone cannot account for the measured enhanced conductivity. In contrast, these measurements can be quantitatively explained using the Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach for the effect of superconducting fluctuations in layered superconductors, extended to $\varepsilon_{onset}$ by including a total energy cutoff, which takes into account the limits imposed by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to the shrinkage of the superconducting wavefunction. Our analysis confirms the adequacy of this cutoff, and that the effective periodicity length is controlled by the relative Josephson coupling between superconducting layers. These conclusions are reinforced by analyzing one of the recent works that allegedly discards the superconducting fluctuations scenario while supporting a percolative scenario for the enhanced conductivity above $T_c$ in cuprates.

The confrontation between the superconducting fluctuations and percolation effects as the origin of the in-plane paraconductivity in cuprate superconductors was earlier addressed at a quantitative level in the case of the optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) compound. Using in-plane resistivity data from a high-quality YBCO thin film, we will extend these analyses to high reduced temperatures, in the case of the Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach for the conventional superconducting fluctuations, by considering the total energy cutoff. These data will also be analysed in terms of the mean field-approach of the effective-medium theory, to probe if emergent percolative effects may account for the resistivity rounding above $T_c$. Our analyses confirm earlier conclusions: the measured paraconductivity cannot be explained in terms of emergent percolation processes, but it may be accounted for in terms of the GGL approach. These results also call into question alternative scenarios, including a recent proposal derived from emergent percolative effects.

In the isothermal $M(H)$, a well defined second magnetization peak (SMP) feature is observed in the entire temperature range below $T_c$ for measurements with $H$ $\parallel$ $c$-axis. However, for $H$ $\parallel$ $ab$-planes, the SMP feature is suppressed at low temperatures, which might be due to 2D Josephson vortices forming at low temperatures and high magnetic fields in such an anisotropic system. A rigorous analysis considering the magnetic relaxation data for $H$ $\parallel$ $c$-axis suggests an elastic to plastic pinning crossover across $H_p$, which also seems accompanied with a possible phase transition in vortex lattice near $H_p$. Moreover, point disorder and surface defects are likely to be the dominant sources of pinning, which contribute to the $δl$-type of pinning in the sample. A high $J_c$, in access of 10$^5$ A/cm$^2$ observed could potentially make this material technologically important.

Detailed measurements of the in-plane resistivity were performed in a high-quality Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x=0.065$) single crystal, in magnetic fields up to 9 T and with different orientations $θ$ relative to the crystal $c$ axis. A significant $ρ(T)_{H,θ}$ rounding is observed just above the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ due to Cooper pairs created by superconducting fluctuations. These data are analyzed in terms of a generalization of the Aslamazov-Larkin approach, that extends its applicability to high reduced-temperatures and magnetic fields. This method allows us to carry out a criterion-independent determination of the angular dependence of the upper critical field, $H_{c2}(θ)$. In spite of the relatively small anisotropy of this compound, it is found that $H_{c2}(θ)$ presents a significant deviation from the single-band 3D anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (3D-aGL) approach, particularly for large $θ$ (typically above $\sim60^o$). These results are interpreted in terms of the multiband nature of these materials, in contrast with other proposals for similar $H_{c2}(θ)$ anomalies. Our results are also consistent with an effective anisotropy factor almost temperature independent near $T_c$, a result that differs from the ones obtained by using a single-band model.

B 83, 144508 (2011)), here we will first argue that a 16 T magnetic field is not enough to quench all superconducting fluctuations above Tc in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. We then conclude that through their measurements of microwave absorption these authors actually determine the ac-fluctuation magnetoconductivity at 16 T, instead of the zero-field ac paraconductivity as they pretend. So, the temperature proposed by Grbić et al. for the onset of the superconducting fluctuations, T', will correspond to the one at which the finite-field effects at 16 T become measurable in their experiments, and the actual fluctuations onset will be located well above T'. These conclusions, which also concern influential recent publications on that issue, are then confirmed by analyzing some of the Grbić et al., data on the grounds of the Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach for the finite-field (or Prange) fluctuation regime.

The electrical conductivity induced near the superconducting transition by thermal fluctuations was measured in different granular aluminum films. The seemingly anomalous behavior at high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields is explained by taking into account a total-energy cutoff in the superconducting fluctuation spectrum in both the direct (Aslamazov-Larkin) and the indirect (anomalous Maki-Thompson) contributions to the fluctuation effects. The analysis allowed a reliable determination of the coherence length amplitudes, which resulted to be much larger (20-48 nm) than the grains size (5-10 nm). This suggests that the grains are strongly Josephson-coupled, while the Tc value is still as high as twice the bulk value. These results could contribute to identify the mechanisms enhancing Tc in these materials.

Then, it is presented a comparison of these experimental data with the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approach that takes into account the unavoidable contribution of the fluctuating pairs, the only theoretical scenario allowing at present to analyze these roundings at the quantitative level. These analyses demonstrate that the measured rounding effects around $T_c$ may be explained quantitative and consistently in terms of the GL scenario, even up to the rounding onset temperatures if the quantum localization, associated with the shrinkage of the superconducting wavefunction, is taken into account. The implications of our results on the pseudogap physics of optimally-doped cuprates are also discussed.

The second magnetization peak (SMP) for each isothermal $M(H)$ was observed in a wide temperature range from $T_c$ to the lowest temperature of measurement (2 K). Magnetic field dependence of relaxation rate $R(H)$, shows a peak (H$_{spt}$) between H$_{on}$ (onset of SMP in $M(H)$) and H$_p$ (peak field of SMP in $M(H)$), which is likely to be related with a vortex-lattice structural phase transition, as suggested in literature for similar sample. In addition, the magnetic relaxation measured for magnetic fields near H$_{spt}$ show some noise which might be the signature of the structural phase transition of the vortex lattice. Analysis of the magnetic relaxation data using Maley's criterion and the collective pinning theory suggests that the second magnetization peak (SMP) in the sample is due to the collective (elastic) to plastic creep crossover, which is also accompanied with a rhombic to square vortex lattice phase transition. Analysis of the pinning force density suggests single dominating pinning mechanism in the sample and is not showing the usual $δ$l and $δT_c$ nature of pinning. The critical current density ($J_c$) estimated using the Bean's critical state model is found to be 5 $\times$ 10$^5$ A/cm$^2$ at 2 K in the zero magnetic field limit. Surprisingly, the maximum in the pinning force density is not responsible for the maximum value of the critical current density in the sample.

The nature of superconducting fluctuation effects in the isovalently-substituted iron pnictide BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ (x=0.35) is probed through measurements of the magnetization and magnetoconductivity around the superconducting transition. The results, obtained with magnetic fields up to 9 T applied in the two main crystal directions, are consistent with anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approaches for finite applied magnetic fields. The analysis allowed to determine with accuracy the out-of-plane, $ξ_c(0)$, and in-plane, $ξ_{ab}(0)$, GL coherence lengths. Significant differences are found between the $ξ_c(0)$ values resulting from electrical transport and magnetization data. According to recent theoretical approaches, these differences could be interpreted in terms of the multiband nature of this material. The analysis of data in the low field region around the transition temperature also suggests that phase fluctuations, although possibly relevant in other Fe-based superconductors, may play a negligible role in this compound.

The interplay between fluctuating Cooper pairs and magnetic impurities in conventional BCS low-Tc superconductors has been studied through measurements of the magnetic field dependence of the fluctuation diamagnetism (FD) above Tc in lanthanum with praseodymium impurities. These measurements provide a crucial confirmation of our previous observation [Europhys. Lett. 73, 587 (2006)] that in the dilute impurity regime the FD increases almost linearly with the concentration of magnetic impurities. This striking effect is attributed to a variation due to the presence of the fluctuating Cooper pairs of the coupling between magnetic impurities. To describe these results at a phenomenological level, we propose a Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau model for the FD which includes an indirect contribution proportional to both the impurities concentration and the Cooper pairs density. Our approach is able to explain simultaneously the FD increase due to magnetic impurities and its decrease with the application of large magnetic fields.

We measure magnetization as a function of temperature, magnetic field and time in a BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.68}$P$_{0.32}$)$_2$ single crystal with $T_c$ = 27.6 K. The fish-tail observed on many $M$($H$) curves are used to construct isofield $M$($T$) curves which show an anomalous peak at some temperature $Tt$ suggesting a possible phase transition in the irreversible regime. A vortex dynamics study performed along the peaks evidences a minimum in the relaxation rate occurring at the same position $Tt$ of the minimum value of $M$ in these peaks. A vortex dynamics study performed on $M$($H$) curves show two distinct minimum in the relaxation rate: a first minimum ($H1$) for a lower field correlating with $Tt$ and a second ($H2$) correlating with the peak in the fish-tail. A phase diagram is constructed and the line corresponding to $Tt$ and $H1$ points obey an expression developed in the literature for a structural rhombic to square lattice phase transition, further supporting this view.

In the commented work (PRL 109, 187005 (2012)), Rullier-Albenque et al. present measurements of transverse magnetoresistivity above the transition temperature Tc in clean LiFeAs. By analyzing their data, these authors conclude that the conductivity induced by fluctuations follows a two-dimensional (2D) behavior even close to Tc, in spite that for LiFeAs the transverse coherence length ($ξ_c$(0)=1.6 nm) is larger than the Fe-layers spacing (s=0.636 nm), which would rather suggest a three-dimensional (3D) behavior. This striking proposal would have deep implications in the theoretical understanding of the multiband structure of iron pnictides, but it also contrasts with the 3D behavior observed near Tc in the same compound and in other iron pnictides with even smaller $ξ_c$(0)/s ratios. Here we show that the proposal of Rullier et al. could be just an artifact associated to an inadequate subtraction of the normal-state contribution.

The temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals is determined directly from the shielding magnetic susceptibility, measured in the Meissner region with the field parallel to the ab layers. The do** levels studied cover the underdoped, optimally-doped and overdoped regimes. At temperatures below 0.5Tc a well-defined power-law behavior $λ_{ab}(T)-λ_{ab}(0)=AT^n$ (with n approximately 2.5) is observed. At lower temperatures (T<0.3Tc) the data are still consistent with n=2 and $A\propto T_c^{-3}$, as predicted by the strong pair-breaking scenario proposed by Gordon et al., Phys. Rev. We study fluctuation conductivity in a single crystal of BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ superconductor ($T_c$ = 20 K) as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. Magneto-conductivity curves, $Δσ$ vs. $T$, were analyzed in terms of -1/(dln($Δσ$)/d$T$) vs. $T$ plots, which allow to study different fluctuations regimes and to estimate exponent values and temperature widths of each regime. The analysis of magneto-conductivity curves evidence the existence of only two fluctuations regimes, a possible critical one (of glass-like type) going from the irreversible temperature to above $T_c(H)$ followed by Aslamazov-Larkin fluctuations in the Gaussian regime.

In a recent work [J. Mosqueira et al., Phys. Rev. Here we extend these measurements to the fluctuation region above Tc, in order to check whether the above mentioned effect is also present.

The adequacy of the mean-field Ginzburg-Landau descriptions is further confirmed when analyzing in terms of the GL scaling in the lowest-Landau-level (GL-LLL) approximation the magnetization data reported below Tc by L. We report on magnetization measurements performed on a single crystal of Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CuO{6+δ} with Tc\sim7 K for H||c-axis. The isofield M(T) curves show a large reversible region, with a pronounced rounding effect as M approaches zero which prevents the determination of Tc(H). Deviations from the linear behavior of magnetisation near Tc(H) are studied through the asymptotic behavior of $\sqrt{-M(T)}\sim(T-Ta)^m$, where m is an exponent and Ta an apparent temperature transition. Values of m deviates from the expected mean field value, 1/2, suggesting the importance of phase fluctuations. Resulting values of Ta, interpreted as the onset of phase correlations, decrease as field increases showing an upward curvature. Values of Tc(H) are obtained through a two-dimensional critical scaling analysis obeyed by many M(T) curves. The resulting phase diagram do not show upward curvature and lies below the Ta(H) line. The value of H{c2}(0) estimated from the initial slope $H_{c2}/dT is twice the value suggested by the phase diagram. Amplitude fluctuations above Ta(H) are explained in terms of a Ginzburg-Landau approach extended to high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields by the introduction of a total-energy cutoff in the fluctuation spectrum.

[Nature Physics 7, 455 (2011)] have addressed the long standing but still open issue of the interplay between pseudogap and superconducting fluctuations in cuprates. Unfortunately, these authors have analyzed their interesting measurements without taking into account the unavoidable inhomogeneities of the zero-field critical temperature Tc0 associated with the random distribution of the Sr ions, in spite of the different works on this issue in the same compounds. Here we will show that such a shortcoming invalidates most of the conclusions of Rourke et al.

The interplay between superconducting fluctuations and inhomogeneities presents a renewed interest due to recent works supporting an anomalous [beyond the conventional Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) scenario] diamagnetism above Tc in underdoped cuprates. This conclusion, mainly based in the observation of new anomalies in the low-field isothermal magnetization curves, is in contradiction with our earlier results in the underdoped La(1.9)Sr(0.1)CuO(4) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 3157 (2000)]. These seemingly intrinsic anomalies are being presented in various influential works as a 'thermodynamic evidence' for phase incoherent superconductivity in the pseudogap regime, this last being at present a central and debated issue of the cuprate superconductors' physics. Here we have extended our magnetization measurements in La(1.9)Sr(0.1)CuO(4) to two samples with different chemical disorder, in one of them close to the one associated with the random distribution of Sr ions. For this sample, the corresponding Tc-distribution may be approximated as symmetric around the average Tc, while in the most disordered sample is strongly asymmetric. The comparison between the magnetization measured in both samples provides a crucial check of the chemical disorder origin of the observed diamagnetism anomalies, which are similar to those claimed as due to phase fluctuations by other authors. This conclusion applies also to the sample affected only by the intrinsic-like chemical disorder, providing then a further check that the intrinsic diamagnetism above the superconducting transition of underdoped cuprates is not affected by the opening of a pseudogap in the normal state. It is also shown here that once these disorder effects are overcome, the remaining precursor diamagnetism may be accounted at a quantitative level in terms of the GGL approach under a total energy cutoff.

The magnetization vector \vec M was measured in the reversible region of the mixed state of a high quality Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 single crystal as a function of temperature and for different magnetic field amplitudes and orientations. These measurements allowed to study the \vec M components perpendicular and parallel to the CuO2 layers (Mperp and Mpara, respectively) under arbitrary values for the corresponding components of the applied magnetic field, Hperp and Hpara. For temperatures close to Tc (in the critical fluctuation region) we observed Mperp(Hperp,Hpara) Mperp(Hperp,0) and Mpara(Hperp,Hpara)~0, as expected for an extremely anisotropic material. However, deviations from this behavior are observed at lower temperatures in the London region. In particular, the Mperp amplitude under a constant Hperp decreases on increasing Hpara. In turn, in spite of the experimental uncertainties affecting Mpara (mainly associated with the rotating sample holder), its amplitude under a constant Hpara becomes observable on increasing Hperp. Both effects lead to an angular slippage of the magnetization vector \vec M from the c crystallographic axis when the applied magnetic field is tilted from that axis. The Mperp behavior is phenomenologically explained in the framework of Lawrence-Doniach approaches for single layered superconductors by just assuming a slight angular dependence of the so-called vortex structure constant. However, the observed Mpara is orders of magnitude larger than expected, a fact which is related to the multilayered nature of the compound studied. Our present results also directly affect the interpretation of recent measurements of the magnetic torque in other extremely anisotropic high-Tc cuprates.

For temperatures close to the critical temperature, T_c, the quantity \sqrt{-M} is proportional to the order parameter amplitude |ψ|. Curves of \sqrt{-M} vs. T allowed to study the asymptotic behavior of the form (T_a-T)^m of |ψ| near T_c, as a function of field. Results for the studied samples produced values of T_a(H) lying above T_c, suggesting that the magnetic field gradually allows to probe a region of temperatures where phase correlations persist above T_c. The study performed here in YBaCuO samples allowed to study how phase correlations evolve with do** in the pseudo-gap region of YBaCuO. \sqrt{-M} vs. T curves for all samples show a rather large amplitude fluctuation with no phase correlation extending well above T_a(H) which is interpreted in terms of a Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau approach with a {total-energy} cutoff in the fluctuation spectrum. Resulting values for the exponent m found for all samples, 0.5 < m < 0.7, are interpreted as due to phase fluctuations of the d-wave pairing symmetry of the order parameter in the ab- planes.

We propose that a crude phenomenological description of the observed effects may be obtained if the quantum limits associated with the uncertainty principle are introduced in the Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau description of the fluctuation-induced magnetization.

Abstract:
The magnetic field dependence of the magnetization was measured above the superconducting transition in a high-Tc underdoped cuprate La1.9Sr0.1CuO4 and in a low-Tc alloy (Pb55In45). Near the superconducting transition [typically for (T-Tc)/Tc<0.05] and under low applied magnetic field amplitudes [typically for H/Hc2(0)<0.01, where Hc2(0) is the corresponding upper critical field extrapolated to…

The magnetic field dependence of the magnetization was measured above the superconducting transition in a high-Tc underdoped cuprate La1.9Sr0.1CuO4 and in a low-Tc alloy (Pb55In45). Near the superconducting transition [typically for (T-Tc)/Tc<0.05] and under low applied magnetic field amplitudes [typically for H/Hc2(0)<0.01, where Hc2(0) is the corresponding upper critical field extrapolated to T=0 K] the magnetization of both samples presents a diamagnetic contribution much larger than the one predicted by the Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach for superconducting fluctuations. These anomalies have been already observed in cuprate compounds by various groups and attributed to intrinsic effects associated with the own nature of these high-Tc superconductors. However, we will see here that our results in both high and low-Tc superconductors may be explained quantitatively, and consistently with the GGL behavior observed at higher fields, by just taking into account the presence in the samples of an uniform distribution of Tc inhomogeneities. These Tc inhomogeneities, which may be in turn associated with stoichiometric inhomogeneities, were estimated from independent measurements of the temperature dependence of the field-cooled magnetic susceptibility under low applied magnetic fields.

Abstract:
The fluctuation-induced diamagnetism (FD), associated with the presence of precursor Cooper pairs in the normal state, has been measured in lanthanum with dilute magnetic (Pr) and nonmagnetic (Lu) impurities. It is found that while for pure La and La-Lu alloys the FD agrees, as expected, with the theoretical predictions, it is much larger for La-Pr alloys (around a factor 5 for La-2at.%Pr). Thes…

It is found that while for pure La and La-Lu alloys the FD agrees, as expected, with the theoretical predictions, it is much larger for La-Pr alloys (around a factor 5 for La-2at.%Pr). These results suggest the existence of an indirect contribution to the FD arising from the interaction between fluctuating Cooper pairs and magnetic impurities.

Abstract:
In this work we present measurements of the electrical conductivity and of the magnetization of La and of La-Pr and La-Lu dilute (up to 2 atomic percent) alloys, from which we determine, very in particular, the influence of dilute magnetic impurities on the upper critical magnetic field amplitude [and then on the superconducting coherence length amplitude and on the Ginzburg-Landau parameter].

We review some aspects of the interplay between inhomogeneities at long length scales and the intrinsic fluctuations of Cooper pairs above Tc in HTSC. These inhomogeneities do not directly affect the thermal fluctuations, but they may affect the measured behaviour of any observable around Tc. The emphasis is centered on the role played by the presence of Tc-inhomogeneities on the in-plane transport properties. For completeness, we will also summarize some results on this interplay when various types of inhomogeneities (i.e., structural and stoichiometric, uniformly and non-uniformly distributed) are simultaneously present.

The effects induced on the magnetization by coherent fluctuating Cooper pairs in the normal state have been measured in Pb_{1-x}In_x alloys up to high magnetic fields, of amplitudes above Hc2(0), the upper critical field extrapolated to T=0K. Our results show that in dirty alloys these superconducting fluctuation effects are, in the entire H-T phase diagram above Hc2(T), independent of the amount of impurities and that they vanish when H~1.1Hc2(0). These striking results are consistent with a phenomenological estimate that takes into account the limits imposed by the uncertainty principle to the shrinkage, when H increases, of the superconducting wave function.

We first argue that the collective behaviour of the Cooper pairs created by thermal fluctuations well above the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, is dominated by the uncertainty principle which, in particular, leads to a well-defined temperature, T^C, above which the superconducting coherence vanishes. On the grounds of the BCS approach, the corresponding reduced-temperature, ln(T^C/Tc), is estimated to be around 0.55, i.e., above T^C \approx 1.7Tc coherent Cooper pairs cannot exist. The implications of these proposals on the superfluid density are then examined using the Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau approximation. Then we present new measurements of the thermal fluctuation effects on the electrical conductivity and on the magnetization in different low- and high-Tc superconductors with different do**s which are in excellent agreement with these proposals and that demonstrate the universality of ln(T^C/Tc).
