The properties of these materials are related to the instability of their highly symmetric Jahn-Teller "progenitors" with the ground orbital E-state to charge transfer with anti-Jahn-Teller disproportionation and the formation of a system of effective local composite spin-singlet or spin-triplet, electronic or hole bosons moving in a non-magnetic or magnetic lattice. These unusual systems are characterized by an extremely rich variety of phase states from non-magnetic and magnetic insulators to unusual metallic and superconducting states.

Spin reorientation is an important phenomenon of rare-earth perovskites, orthoferrites and orthochromites. In this study, we consider a simple but realistic microscopic theory of the spontaneous spin-reorientation transitions induced by the 4f-3d interaction, more specifically, the interaction of the main Kramers doublet or non-Kramers quasi-doublet of the 4f ion with an effective magnetic field induced by the 3d sublattice. The obtained results indicate that the cause of both the temperature and the character of the spin-reorientation transition is a competition between the second and fourth order spin anisotropy of the 3d sublattice, the crystal field for 4f ions, and the 4f-3d interaction.

We introduce a minimal model to describe the charge degree of freedom in cuprates with the on-site Hilbert space reduced to only the three valence states CuO$_4^{7-,6-,5-}$ (nominally Cu$^{1+,2+,3+}$) and make use of the S=1 pseudospin formalism. The formalism constitutes a powerful method to study complex phenomena in interacting quantum systems characterized by the coexistence and competition of various ordered states. Overall, such a framework provides a simple and systematic methodology to predict and discover new kinds of orders. In particular, the pseudospin formalism provides the most effective way to describe different topological structures, in particular, due to a possibility of a geometrical two-vector description of the on-site states. We introduce and analyze effective pseudospin Hamiltonian with on-site and inter-site charge correlations, two types of a correlated one-particle transfer and two-particle, or the composite boson transfer. The 2D S=1 pseudospin system is prone to a creation of different topological structures, which form topologically protected inhomogeneous distributions of the eight local S=1 pseudospin order parameters. We present a short overview of localized topological structures, typical for S=1 (pseudo)spin systems, focusing on unexpected antiphase domain walls in parent cuprates and so-called quadrupole skyrmion, which are believed to be candidates for a topological charge excitation in parent or underdoped cuprates. Puzzlingly, these unconventional structures can be characterized by an uniform distribution of the mean on-site charge, that makes these invisible for X-rays. Quasiclassical approximation and computer simulation are applied to analyze localized topological defects and evolution of the domain structures in "negative-$U$" model under charge order-superfluid phase transition.

We develop a minimal non-BCS model for the CuO$_2$ planes with the on-site Hilbert space reduced to only three effective valence centers CuO$_4$ with different charge, conventional spin, and orbital symmetry, combined in a charge triplet. Using the S=1 pseudospin algebra we introduce an effective spin-pseudospin Hamiltonian. To illustrate the possibilities of the molecular field approximation we start with the analysis of the atomic and the "large negative-$U$" limits of the model in comparison with the Bethe cluster approximation, classical and quantum Monte Carlo methods. Both limiting systems exhibit the phase separation effect typical of systems with competing order parameters. The $T$\,-\,$n$ phase diagrams of the complete spin-pseudospin model were reproduced by means of a site-dependent variational approach within effective field approximation typical for spin-magnetic systems. Limiting ourselves to two-sublattice approximation and $nn$-couplings we arrived at several Néel-like phases in CuO$_2$ planes for parent and doped systems with a single nonzero local order parameter: antiferromagnetic insulator, charge order, glueless $d$-wave Bose superfluid phase, and unusual metallic phase. However, the global minimum of free energy is realized for phase separated states which are bounded by the third-order phase transition line $T^{\star}(n)$, which is believed to be responsible for the onset of the pseudogap phenomenon. With a certain choice of the Hamiltonian parameters the model phase diagrams can quite reasonably reproduce the main features of experimental phase diagrams for T- and T$^{\prime}$-cuprates and novel nickelates. The superconducting phase of cuprates/nickelates is determined by the on-site composite boson transport, it is not a consequence of pairing of doped holes/electrons, but represents one of the possible phase states of parent systems.

We argue that antiferromagnetic insulating, charge ordered, superconducting, and Fermi-liquid phases are possible phase states of a model parent cuprate, while typical phase state of a doped cuprate, in particular mysterious pseudogap phase, is a result of a phase separation. Superconductivity of cuprates is not a consequence of pairing of doped holes, but the result of quantum transport of on-site composite hole bosons, whereas main peculiarities of normal state can be related to an electron-hole interplay for unusual Fermi-liquid phase and features of the phase separation. Puzzlingly, but it is the electron-lattice interaction, which in the BCS model determines $s$-wave pairing, in the model of local composite bosons gives $d_{x^2-y^2}$-symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, thus showing once again a substantial involvement of the lattice in the cuprate's HTSC.

The short-range correlations are considered for a two-dimensional hard-core boson model on square lattice within Bethe approximation for the clusters consisting of two and four sites. Explicit equations are derived for the critical temperatures of charge and superfluid ordering and their solutions are considered for various ratios of the charge-charge correlation parameter to the transfer integral. It is shown that taking into account short-range correlations for the temperatures of charge ordering results in the appearance of the critical concentration of bosons, which restricts the existence domain of the solutions of charge ordering type. In the case of superfluid ordering with the assumption of short-range correlations, the critical temperature is reduced up to zero values at half-filling. A phase diagram of the hard-core boson model is constructed with the assumption of phase separation within Maxwell's construction and it is shown that taking into account short-range correlations within Bethe approximation quantitatively approximates the form of phase diagram to the results of the quantum Monte Carlo method.

Most attention in the paper centers around the derivation of the Dzyaloshinskii vector, its value, orientation, and sense (sign) under different types of the (super)exchange interaction and crystal field. Microscopically derived expression for the dependence of the Dzyaloshinskii vector on the superexchange geometry allows one to find all the overt and hidden canting angles in orthoferrites RFeO$_3$ as well as corresponding contribution to magnetic anisotropy. Being based on the theoretical predictions regarding the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii vector we have predicted and study in detail a novel magnetic phenomenon, {\it weak ferrimagnetism} in mixed weak ferromagnets with competing signs of the Dzyaloshinskii vectors. The ligand NMR measurements in weak ferromagnets are shown to be an effective tool to inspect the effects of DM coupling in an external magnetic field. Along with orthoferrites RFeO$_3$ and weak ferrimagnets RFe$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_3$, although to a lesser extent, we address such typical weak ferromagnets as $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, FeBO$_3$, and FeF$_3$.

We report a detailed study of the ground state helical magnetic structure in monophosphide FeP by means of ${}^{31}$P NMR spectroscopy. We show that the zero-field NMR spectrum of the polycrystalline sample provides strong evidence of an anisotropic distribution of local magnetic fields at the P site with substantially lower anharmonicity than that found at the Fe site by Mössbauer spectroscopy. From field-sweep ${}^{31}$P NMR spectra we conclude that a continuous spin-reorientation transition occurs in an external magnetic field range of 4 - 7 T, which is also confirmed by specific-heat measurements. We observe two pairs of magnetically inequivalent phosphorus positions resulting in a pronounced four-peak structure of the single crystal ${}^{31}$P NMR spectra characteristic of an incommensurate helimagnetic ground state. We revealed a spatial redistribution of local fields at the P sites caused by Fe spin-reorientation transition in high fields and developed an effective approach to account for it. We demonstrate that all observed ${}^{31}$P spectra can be treated within a model of an isotropic helix of Fe magnetic moments in the ($ab$)-plane with a phase shift of 36$^{\circ}$ and 176$^{\circ}$ between Fe1-Fe3 (Fe2-Fe4) and Fe1-Fe2 (Fe3-Fe4) sites, respectively, in accordance with the neutron scattering data.

Most attention in the paper centers around the derivation of the Dzyaloshinskii vector, its value, orientation, and sense (sign) under different types of the (super)exchange interaction and crystal field. We consider both the Moriya mechanism of the antisymmetric interaction and novel contributions, in particular, that of spin-orbital coupling on the intermediate ligand ions. We have predicted a novel magnetic phenomenon, {\it weak ferrimagnetism} in mixed weak ferromagnets with competing signs of the Dzyaloshinskii vectors.
We revisit a problem of the DM coupling for a single bond in cuprates specifying the local spin-orbital contributions to Dzyaloshinskii vector focusing on the oxygen term. We predict a novel puzzling effect of the on-site staggered spin polarization to be a result of the on-site spin-orbital coupling and the the cation-ligand spin density transfer. The intermediate ligand NMR measurements are shown to be an effective tool to inspect the effects of the DM coupling in an external magnetic field. We predict the effect of a $strong$ oxygen weak antiferromagnetism in edge-shared CuO$_2$ chains due to uncompensated oxygen Dzyaloshinskii vectors. We revisit the effects of symmetric spin anisotropy directly induced by the DM coupling. A critical analysis will be given of different approaches to exchange-relativistic coupling based on the cluster and the DFT based calculations. Theoretical results are applied to different classes of 3d compounds from conventional weak ferromagnets ($α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, FeBO$_3$, FeF$_3$, RFeO$_3$, RCrO$_3$,.. ) to unconventional systems such as weak ferrimagnets (e.g., RFe$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_3$), helimagnets (e.g., CsCuCl$_3$), and parent cuprates (La$_2$CuO$_4$,...).

We consider the competition of magnetic and charge ordering in high-Tc cuprates within the framework of the simplified static 2D spin-pseudospin model. This model is equivalent to the 2D dilute antiferromagnetic (AFM) Ising model with charged impurities. We present the mean-field results for the system under study and make a brief comparison with classical Monte Carlo (MC) calculations. Numerical simulations show that the cases of strong exchange and strong charge correlation differ qualitatively. For a strong exchange, the AFM phase is unstable with respect to the phase separation (PS) into the charge and spin subsystems, which behave like immiscible quantum liquids. An analytical expression was obtained for the PS temperature.

We report new results of a 57Fe Mössbauer study of multiferroic 3R-AgFeO2 powder samples performed in a wide temperature range, including two points, TN1 ~ 14 K and TN2 ~ 9 K, of magnetic phase transitions. At the intermediate temperature range, TN2 < T < TN1, the 57Fe Mössbauer spectra can be described in terms of collinear spin-density-waves (SDW) with the inclusion of many high-order harmonics, indicating that the real magnetic structure of this ferrite appears to be more complicated than a pure sinusoidally modulated SDW. The spectra at low temperatures, T < TN2, consist of a Zeeman pattern with line broadenings and sizeable spectral asymmetry. It has been shown that the observed spectral shape is consistent with a transition to the elliptical cycloidal magnetic structure. An analysis of the experimental spectra was carried out under the assumption that the electric hyperfine interactions are modulated when the Fe3+ magnetic moment rotates with respect to the principal axis of the EFG tensor and emergence of the strong anisotropy of the magnetic hyperfine field Hhf at the 57Fe nuclei. The large and temperature-independent anharmonicity parameter, m ~ 0.78, of the cycloidal spin structure obtained from the experimental spectra results from easy-axis anisotropy in the plane of rotation of the iron spin. Analysis of different mechanisms of spin and hyperfine interactions in 3R-AgFeO2 and its structural analogue CuFeO2 points to a specific role played by the topology of the exchange coupling and the oxygen polarization in the delafossite structures.

Starting with the on-site Hilbert space reduced to only three effective valence centers, nominally Cu$^{1+,2+,3+}$, we present an unified approach to the description of the local intra-unit-cell (IUC) order parameters in cuprates. Central point of the model implies the occurrence of unconventional on-site quantum superpositions of the three valent states characterized by different hole occupation, $n_h$=0,1,2, conventional spin s=1/2 for Cu$^{2+}$ and s=0 for Cu$^{1+,3+}$ centers, and different orbital symmetry:$B_{1g}$ for the ground states of the Cu$^{2+}$ center and $A_{1g}$ for the Cu$^{1+,3+}$ centers, respectively. The latter does result in a spontaneous orbital symmetry breaking with emergence of the IUC orbital nematic order parameter of the $B_{1g}\propto d_{x2-y2}$ symmetry. To describe the quantum local charge order we develop an S=1 pseudospin model. Conventional spin density $ρ_s$ for mixed valence superpositions can vary inbetween 0 and 1 in accordance with the weight of the Cu$^{2+}$ center in the superposition. We show that the superconductivity and spin magnetism are nonsymbiotic phenomena with competing order parameters. Furthermore we argue that instead of a well-isolated Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet $^1A_{1g}$ the ground state of the hole Cu$^{3+}$ center in cuprates should be described by a complex $^1A_{1g}$-$^{1,3}B_{2g}$-$^{1,3}E_u$ multiplet, formed by a competition of conventional hybrid Cu 3d-O 2p $b_{1g}(σ)\propto d_{x^2 -y^2}$ state and {\it purely oxygen nonbonding} O 2p$π$ states with $a_{2g}(π)$ and $e_{ux,y}(π)$ symmetry. In contrast with inactive ZR singlet we arrive at several novel competing IUC orbital and spin-orbital order parameters, e.g., electric dipole and quadrupole moments, Ising-like net orbital magnetic moment, orbital toroidal moment, intra-plaquette's staggered order of Ising-like oxygen orbital magnetic moments.

We introduce a minimal model for 2D cuprates with the on-site Hilbert space reduced to only three effective valence centers CuO$_4^{7-,6-,5-}$ (nominally Cu$^{1+,2+,3+}$) and make use of the S=1 pseudospin formalism. Despite its seeming simplicity the model is believed to capture the salient features both of the hole- and electron-doped cuprates. The pseudospin formalism elucidates an unique fermion-boson duality of the doped cuprates, does provide an unified standpoint for classification of the "myriad"\, of electronic phases in cuprates and the evolution of the CuO$_2$ planes under a nonisovalent do**, introduces the on-site mixed valence quantum superpositions and order parameters to be novel features of the cuprate physics, does provide a comprehensive description of the correlated one- and two-particle transport, coexistence of $p$- and $n$-type carriers, electron-hole asymmetry, anticorrelation of conventional spin and superconducting order parameters. Concept of the electron and hole centers, differing by a composite local boson, and electron-hole pairing are shown to explain central points of the cuprate puzzles, in particular, the HTSC itself, pseudogap, and Fermi surface reconstruction.

We have focused in the paper on the most prominent and intensively studied S=1 pseudospin formalism for extended bosonic Hubbard model (EHBM) with truncation of the on-site Hilbert space to the three lowest occupation states n = 0, 1, 2. The EHBM Hamiltonian is a paradigmatic model for the highly topical field of ultracold gases in optical lattices. Generalized non-Heisenberg effective pseudospin Hamiltonian does provide a deep link with boson system and physically clear description of "the myriad of phases" from uniform Mott insulating phases and density waves to two types of superfluids and supersolids. We argue that the 2D pseudospin system is prone to a topological phase separation and focus on several types of unconventional skyrmion-like topological structures in 2D boson systems, which have not been analysed till now. The structures are characterized by a complicated interplay of insulating and the two superfluid phases with a single boson and two-boson condensation, respectively.

Disproportionation in 3d compounds can give rise to an unconventional electron-hole Bose liquid with a very rich phase diagram from a Bose metal, charge ordering insulator to an inhomogeneous Bose superfluid. Optimal conditions for the disproportionation driven high-T_c superconductivity are shown to realize only for several Jahn-Teller d^n configurations that permit the formation of well defined local composite bosons. These are the high-spin d^4, low-spin d^7, and d^9 configurations given the octahedral crystal field, and the d^1, high-spin d^6 configurations given the tetrahedral crystal field. The disproportionation reaction has a peculiar anti-Jahn- Teller character lifting the bare orbital degeneracy. Superconductivity in the d^4 and d^6 systems at variance with d^1, d^7, and d^9 systems implies an unavoidable coexistence of the spin-triplet composite bosons and a magnetic lattice. We argue that unconventional high-T_c superconductivity observed in quasi-2D cuprates with tetragonally distorted CuO_6 octahedra and iron-based layered pnictides/chalcogenides with tetrahedrally coordinated Fe^2+ ions can be a key argument supporting the disproportionation scenario is at work in these compounds.

Luminescence spectra of NiO have been investigated under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and soft X-ray (XUV) excitation. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra show broad emission bands centered at about 2.3 and 3.2 eV. The PL excitation (PLE) spectral evolution and lifetime measurements reveal that two mechanisms with short and long decay times, attributed to the d($e_g$)-d($e_g$) and p($π$)-d charge transfer (CT) transitions in the range 4-6\,eV, respectively, are responsible for the observed emissions, while the most intensive p($σ$)-d CT transition at 7\,eV appears to be a weak if any PL excitation mechanism. The PLE spectra recorded in the 4-7\,eV range agree with the RIXS and reflectance data. Making use of the XUV excitation allows us to avoid the predominant role of the surface effects in luminescence and reveal bulk luminescence with puzzling well isolated doublet of very narrow lines with close energies near 3.3\,eV characteristic for recombination transitions in self-trapped \emph{d}-\emph{d} CT excitons formed by coupled Jahn-Teller Ni$^+$ and Ni$^{3+}$ centers. This conclusion is supported both by a comparative analysis of the luminescence spectra for NiO and solid solutions Ni$_{x}$Zn$_{1-x}$O, and by a comprehensive cluster model assignement of different \emph{p}-\emph{d} and \emph{d}-\emph{d} CT transitions, their relaxation channels. To the best of our knowledge it is the first observation of the self-trap** for \emph{d}-\emph{d} CT excitons. Our paper shows the time resolved luminescence measurements provide an instructive tool for elucidation of the \emph{p}-\emph{d} and \emph{d}-\emph{d} CT excitations and their relaxation in 3d oxides.

Our conjecture does provide an unified standpoint on the main experimental findings for parent cuprates including linear and nonlinear optical, Raman, photoemission, photoabsorption, and transport properties anyhow related with the CT excitations. We have performed both theoretical and experimental study of optical response of parent perovskite manganites RMnO_3 with a main goal to elucidate nature of clearly visible optical features. Starting with a simple cluster model approach we addressed the both one-center (p-d) and two-center (d-d) charge transfer (CT) transitions, their polarization properties, the role played by structural parameters, orbital mixing, and spin degree of freedom. Optical complex dielectric function of single crystalline samples of RMnO_3 (R=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) was measured by ellipsometric technique at room temperature in the spectral range from 1.0 to 5.0 eV for two light polarizations: E \parallel c and E \perp c. The comparative analysis of the spectral behavior of \varepsilon _1 and \varepsilon _2 is believed to provide a more reliable assignment of spectral features. We have found an overall agreement between experimental spectra and theoretical predictions based on the theory of one-center p-d CT transitions and inter-site d-d CT transitions. Our experimental data and theoretical analysis evidence a dual nature of the dielectric gap in nominally stoichiometric matrix of perovskite manganites RMnO_3, it is formed by a superposition of forbidden or weak dipole allowed p-d CT transitions and inter-site d-d CT transitions. In fact, the parent perovskite manganites RMnO_3 should rather be sorted neither into the CT insulator nor the Mott-Hubbard insulator in the Zaanen, Sawatzky, Allen scheme.

Nominally pure undoped parent manganite LaMnO_3 exhibits a puzzling behavior inconsistent with a simple picture of an A-type antiferromagnetic insulator (A-AFI) with a cooperative Jahn-Teller ordering. We do assign its anomalous properties to charge transfer instabilities and competition between insulating A-AFI phase and metallic-like dynamically disproportionated phase formally separated by a first-order phase transition at T_{disp}=T_{JT}\approx 750 K. The unconventional high-temperature phase is addressed to be a specific electron-hole Bose liquid (EHBL) rather than a simple "chemically" disproportionated R(Mn^{2+}Mn^{4+})O_3 phase. New phase does nucleate as a result of the charge transfer (CT) instability and evolves from the self-trapped CT excitons, or specific EH-dimers, which seem to be a precursor of both insulating and metallic-like ferromagnetic phases observed in manganites. We arrive at highly frustrated system of triplet (e_g^2)^3A_{2g} bosons moving in a lattice formed by hole Mn^{4+} centers. Starting with different experimental data we have reproduced a typical temperature dependence of the volume fraction of high-temperature mixed-valent EHBL phase. We argue that a slight nonisovalent substitution, photo-irradiation, external pressure or magnetic field gives rise to an electronic phase separation with a nucleation or an overgrowth of EH-droplets. Such a scenario provides a comprehensive explanation of numerous puzzling properties observed in parent and nonisovalently doped manganite LaMnO_3 including an intriguing manifestation of superconducting fluctuations.

We report a new peculiar effect of the interaction between a sublattice of frustrated quantum spin-1/2 chains and a sublattice of pseudospin-1/2 centers (quantum electric dipoles) uniquely co-existing in the complex oxide Li2ZrCuO4. 7Li nuclear magnetic-, Cu2+ electron spin resonance and a complex dielectric constant data reveal that the sublattice of Li+-derived electric dipoles orders glass like at Tg ~ 70 K yielding a spin site nonequivalency in the CuO2 chains. We suggest that such a remarkable interplay between electrical and spin degrees of freedom might strongly influence the properties of the spiral spin state in Li2ZrCuO4 that is close to a quantum ferromagnetic critical point. In particular that strong quantum fluctuations and/or the glassy behavior of electric dipoles might renormalize the exchange integrals affecting this way the pitch angle of the spiral as well as be responsible for the missing multiferroicity present in other helicoidal magnets.

We address a systematic microscopic theory of spin-dependent electric polarization in 3d oxides starting with a generic three-site two-hole cluster. A perturbation scheme realistic for 3d oxides is applied which implies the quenching of orbital moments by low-symmetry crystal field, strong intra-atomic correlations, the dp-transfer effects, and rather small spin-orbital coupling. An effective spin operator of the electric dipole moment is deduced incorporating both nonrelativistic and relativistic terms. The nonrelativistic electronic polarization mechanism related with the effects of the redistribution of the local on-site charge density due to $pd$ covalency and exchange coupling is believed to govern the multiferroic behaviour in 3d oxides. The relativistic exchange-dipole moment is mainly stems from the nonrelativistic one due to the perturbation effect of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling and is estimated to be a weak contributor to the electric polarization observed in the most of 3d multiferroics.

Field induced antiferromagnetism and anisotropic antiferromagnetic contribution to $^{17}$K explain the anomalies observed in $^{17}$O NMR in La$_2$CuO$_4$. The experimental observation of antiferromagnetic contribution to the $^{17}$O Knight shift provides probably the only way to find out the problem of the sense of Dzyaloshinsky vector in cuprates.

The intermediate oxygen $^{17}$O Knight shift is shown to be an effective tool to inspect the effects of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling in an external magnetic field. We predict the effect of $strong$ oxygen weak antiferromagnetism in edge-shared CuO$_2$ chains due to uncompensated oxygen Dzyaloshinsky vectors. Finally, we revisit the effects of symmetric spin anisotropy, in particular, those directly induced by Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling.

A semi-quantitative cluster approach is developed to describe the charge transfer (CT) electron-hole excitations in insulating cuprates in a rather wide energy range up to 10- 15 eV. It generalizes the Zhang-Ng (ZN) model of CT excitons by considering the complete set of Cu3d and O2p orbitals within the CuO4 embedded molecular cluster method and by introducing one-center (intra-center) Frenkel-like and two-center (inter-center) excitons. Special attention is paid to the transition matrix element effects both in optical and electron energy loss spectra (EELS). In the latter case we obtain the momentum dependence of matrix elements both for intra-center and inter-center transitions. We are able to give a semi-quantitative description of the optical and EELS spectra for a large number of 0D (like CuB2O4), 1D (Sr2CuO3) and 2D (like Sr2CuO2Cl2) insulating cuprates in a unifying manner. By comparing our analysis with the experimental data we find that the CT gap in insulating cuprates is determined by nearly degenerate intra-center localized excitations and inter-center CT excitons. The corresponding EELS intensity is found to be strongly k-dependent: even for isolated exciton it sharply decreases by approaching the Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary. It is shown that the interaction of two-center excitons can result in destructive interference effects with an intensity compensation point.

We develop a model approach to describe charge fluctuations and different charge phases in strongly correlated 3d oxides. As a generic model system one considers that of centers each with three possible valence states described in frames of pseudo-spin (isospin) formalism by an effective anisotropic non-Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Simple uniform mean-field phases include an insulating monovalent phase, mixed-valence binary disproportionated phase, and mixed-valence ternary under-disproportionated phase. We consider two first phases in more details focusing on the problem of electron/hole states and different types of excitons in monovalent phase and formation of electron-hole Bose liquid in disproportionated phase. Pseudo-spin formalism provides a useful framework for revealing and describing different topological charge fluctuations, in particular, like domain walls or bubble domains in antiferromagnets. All the insulating systems such as monovalent phase may be subdivided to two classes: stable and unstable ones with regard to the formation of self-trapped charge transfer (CT) excitons. The latter systems appear to be unstable with regard to the formation of CT exciton clusters, or droplets of the electron-hole Bose liquid. The model approach suggested is believed to be applied to describe a physics of strongly correlated oxides with charge transfer excitonic instability and a mixed valence. We shortly discuss an unconventional scenario of the essential physics of cuprates and manganites that implies their instability with regard to the self-trap** of charge transfer excitons and the formation of electron-hole Bose liquid.

Nonbonding oxygen holes and spinless scenario of magnetic response in doped cuprates

Abstract:
Both theoretical considerations and experimental data point to a more complicated nature of the valence hole states in doped cuprates than it is predicted by Zhang-Rice model. Actually, we deal with a competition of conventional hybrid Cu 3d-O 2p $b_{1g}\propto d_{x^2 -y^2}$ state and purely oxygen nonbonding state with $e_{u}x,y \propto p_{x,y}$ symmetry. Actually, we deal with a competition of conventional hybrid Cu 3d-O 2p $b_{1g}\propto d_{x^2 -y^2}$ state and purely oxygen nonbonding state with $e_{u}x,y \propto p_{x,y}$ symmetry. The latter reveals a non-quenched Ising-like orbital moment that gives rise to a novel spinless purely oxygen scenario of the magnetic response in doped cuprates with the oxygen localized orbital magnetic moments of the order of tenths of Bohr magneton. We consider the mechanism of ${}^{63,65}$Cu-O 2p transferred orbital hyperfine interactions due to the mixing of the oxygen O 2p orbitals with Cu 3p semicore orbitals. Quantitative estimates point to a large magnitude of the respective contributions both to local field and electric field gradient, and their correlated character.

Starting from the classical model we predict the properties of the respective quantum system. The long-wavelength behavior of the system is believed to remind that of granular superconductors, CDW materials, Wigner crystals, and multi-skyrmion system akin in a quantum Hall ferromagnetic state of a 2D electron gas. To elucidate the role played by quantum effects and that of the lattice discreteness we have addressed the simplest nanoscopic counterpart of the bubble domain in a checkerboard CO phase of 2D hc-BH square lattice. It is shown that the relative magnitude and symmetry of multi-component order parameter are mainly determined by the sign of the $nn$ and $nnn$ transfer integrals. In general, the topologically inhomogeneous phase of the hc-BH system away from the half-filling can exhibit the signatures both of $s,d$, and $p$ symmetry of the off-diagonal order.

We report on {6,7}Li nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of the spin-chain compound LiCu2O2 in the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered states. Below T about 24 K the NMR lineshape presents a clear signature of incommensurate (IC) static modulation of the local magnetic field consistent with an IC spiral modulation of the magnetic moments. {7}Li NMR reveals strong phason-like dynamical fluctuations extending well below 24 K. We hypothesize that a series of phase transitions at 24.2, 22.5, and 9 K reflects a "Devil's staircase" type behavior generic for IC systems. LDA based calculations of exchange integrals reveal a large in-chain frustration leading to a magnetical spiral.
